Social Media And Negative Aspects Of Well-Being: Does Fomo Play A Role?, Casey J. Mcandrew Jan 2018

Social Media And Negative Aspects Of Well-Being: Does Fomo Play A Role?, Casey J. Mcandrew

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Fear of missing out (FOMO) is a relatively new concept, however researchers have found that FOMO and social media use cause negative aspects of well-being, such as depression, anxiety, stress (Alabi, 2013; Alavi, 2011) and lack of academic motivation (Jacobsen and Forste, 2011). When using a correlational design, the current study examined the associations between social media engagement and negative aspects of well-being, while also examining the mediating role of FOMO between these variables. Participants (198 college students, M = 19 years old, 86 percent female, 74 percent Caucasian) completed online surveys, where participants reported on their levels of social …

2017-18 Student Success And Service-Learning Report, Lynn Pelco

Division of Community Engagement Resources

Institutional data across multiple academic years were used to assess the impact of undergraduate service-learning class participation on three critical student success metrics: Inclusive excellence, Degree completion, and Quality of learning. Results indicate that traditionally underrepresented student groups participated in VCU service-learning classes at expected rates given their proportion in the overall student population. Thirty-seven percent of undergraduate service-learning students were from underrepresented minority groups and 30% were Pell grant recipients. The average three-year retention rate across four matriculating cohorts of first-time, full-time undergraduate students was 84% for service-learning students compared to 70% for non-service-learning students. Seventy-two percent of undergraduate …

Moving Pictures: Context Of Use And Iconography Of Chariots In The New Kingdom, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.

Faculty Book Chapters

Chariots, the racing cars of the ancient world, first appeared in Egypt about 1600 BC, and quickly became not only the preferred mode of transport for royalty and the elite, but also revolutionised military tactics and warfare. Remains of chariots have been found in Egyptian tombs –Tutankhamun’s tomb contained six chariots, which tripled the number of ancient Egyptian chariots known before the discovery of his tomb. However, none of the chariots was complete, as all lacked their leather casings, which were only known from images on tomb and temple walls.

In 2008, the Ancient Egyptian Leatherwork Project (AELP) working in …

Perceptions Of Crime, Security, And School Resource Officers In High Schools, Nicholas Joseph Dillon Jan 2018

Perceptions Of Crime, Security, And School Resource Officers In High Schools, Nicholas Joseph Dillon

Justice Studies Theses

Perceptions and voices from high school students on crime, security, and school resource officers is essential information for criminal justice researchers; high school administrators and teachers; and law enforcement agencies that help keep high schools safe. A handful of national surveys have been done (e.g., Madfis, 2015; Coon, 2007) on school safety, security, and police officers in schools; however, limited information has been collected to hear student voices on school crime, security, and school resource officers. Since the post-Columbine era of American history, the topic of school safety has been a concern of administrators and parents. This exploratory research project …

A New Model Of Wheezing Severity In Young Children Using The Validated Isaac Wheezing Module: A Latent Variable Approach With Validation In Independent Cohorts., Steven M. Brunwasser Phd, Tebeb Gebretsadik, Diane R Gold, Kedir N Turi, Cosby A Stone, Soma Datta, James E Gern, Tina V Hartert

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) Wheezing Module is commonly used to characterize pediatric asthma in epidemiological studies, including nearly all airway cohorts participating in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) consortium. However, there is no consensus model for operationalizing wheezing severity with this instrument in explanatory research studies. Severity is typically measured using coarsely-defined categorical variables, reducing power and potentially underestimating etiological associations. More precise measurement approaches could improve testing of etiological theories of wheezing illness.

METHODS: We evaluated a continuous latent variable model of pediatric wheezing severity based on four ISAAC …

Modern Psychological Studies

In the literature, there have been many studies measuring homophobic attitudes of heterosexual people. However, there is limited research on behavioral aspects of homophobia. We attempted to develop a new scale measuring homophobic behaviors of heterosexual students toward gay and lesbian individuals on campus life. We developed BGLC (Behaviors toward Gays and Lesbians on Campus) Scale and validated the scale by comparing it with Age Universal I-E Scale, Homophobic Behaviors of Students Scale (HBSS) and Future Engagement in Activities Concerning Homosexual People (FEACHP) in order to study discriminant, convergent and criterion validity, respectively.

"We Didn't Move Here To Move To Aspen": Community Making And Community Development In An Emerging Rural Amenity Destination, Jessica Ulrich-Schad Jan 2018

"We Didn't Move Here To Move To Aspen": Community Making And Community Development In An Emerging Rural Amenity Destination, Jessica Ulrich-Schad

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Residents of high amenity rural areas in the U.S. are grappling with the community-level impacts of their small towns increasingly becoming destinations for in-migrants, seasonal residents, and tourists. This case study of an emerging destination uses alterity theory to examine how amenity migration affects residents' community making and subsequently their community development efforts. Residents tend to see their community as divided into two social groups based upon opposed stances towards development; one resistant to any form of change and the other open. The 'Keepers' are seen as stuck in their ways and closed to any form of development while the …

Mentoring International Teaching Assistants: A Case Study Of Improving Teaching Practices, Ekaterina Arshavskaya Jan 2018

Mentoring International Teaching Assistants: A Case Study Of Improving Teaching Practices, Ekaterina Arshavskaya

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

While there exists a considerable body of research focusing on international teaching assistants’ (ITAs’) linguistic, sociocultural, and instructional challenges, less is known about the successful developmental trajectories of this group of international educators of American students. This research aims to fulfill this research gap using a case study approach (Yin, 2003). The study involved ITAs from STEM majors in six collaborative mentoring sessions prior and upon video recording of three lessons taught by the ITAs to undergraduate students. The mentoring sessions were designed to facilitate ITAs’ reflections on their teaching with the use of structured protocols to help guide the …

Gordon Tullock's Critique Of The Common Law, William F. Shughart Ii

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Gordon Tullock, trained in the law at the University of Chicago, was an implacable critic of the common law, which originated in England centuries ago and was transplanted to the United States, Canada, Australia, and other English-speaking nations during colonial times.1 Tullock generally favored legal regimes based on civil law or "Roman civil law," the latter being the phrase used by John Henry Merryman and Rogelio Pérez-Perdomo ([1969] 2007) to solve a terminological problem in the comparative legal studies literature.2 Although applications of that regime differ from place to place and have evolved over time (as, of course, …
