What Usc Upstate Alumni Say About Information Literacy In The Workplace, Andrew Kearns Feb 2018

What Usc Upstate Alumni Say About Information Literacy In The Workplace, Andrew Kearns

The Southeastern Librarian

Librarians have rightly focused their efforts on helping students acquire the information literacy skills needed to complete academic research while in college, but what comes after? While the way we teach information literacy may be a good preparation for those students going on to graduate school, many of us teach in institutions where a majority of our students will be heading directly to the workplace after they graduate. What information literacy skills are most important in the workplace? What are the differences or similarities in the process of finding and using information? What can librarians do to help prepare these …

Valuing Bicycle Infrastructure In Portland, Oregon, Wei Shi Feb 2018

Valuing Bicycle Infrastructure In Portland, Oregon, Wei Shi

PSU Transportation Seminars

Investments into active transportation infrastructure are often promoted as a strategy for sustainable transportation, better public health, environmental quality, and economic development. Although empirical evidence generally points toward positive property value impacts of off-street greenways and trails, few focus on whether households might have different willingness-to-pay for different types and levels of bicycle infrastructure. This paper aims to fill research gaps in understanding consumer preferences for different types of bicycle facilities by examining property value impacts of four bicycle facility types: on-street advanced bike facilities and bike lanes; and off-street regional multi-use paths and local multi-use paths. Using Portland, Oregon …

Religion, Media, And Marginality In Modern Africa, Felicitas Becker, Joel Cabrita, Marie Rodet Feb 2018

Religion, Media, And Marginality In Modern Africa, Felicitas Becker, Joel Cabrita, Marie Rodet

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In recent years, anthropologists, historians, and others have been drawn to study the profuse and creative usages of digital media by religious movements. At the same time, scholars of Christian Africa have long been concerned with the history of textual culture, the politics of Bible translation, and the status of the vernacular in Christianity. Students of Islam in Africa have similarly examined politics of knowledge, the transmission of learning in written form, and the influence of new media. Until now, however, these arenas—Christianity and Islam, digital media and “old” media—have been studied separately.

Religion, Media, and Marginality in Modern Africa …

Assessing Judicial Empowerment, Thomas Keck Feb 2018

Assessing Judicial Empowerment, Thomas Keck

Political Science - All Scholarship

Drawing on an ongoing international data collection effort, this paper examines the free expression jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Canada and the European Court of Human Rights in an effort to assess the political beneficiaries of judicial empowerment. Free expression is a universally recognized fundamental right, and it is a right that is regularly invoked in court by a rich diversity of political actors. As such, free speech law provides an illuminating window onto how constitutional courts respond to similar claims from differently situated claimants. This paper compares the response by two influential constitutional courts to free expression claims …

The Value Of Green Certification In The Singapore Housing Market, Eric Fesselmeyer Feb 2018

The Value Of Green Certification In The Singapore Housing Market, Eric Fesselmeyer

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In Singapore, a real estate developer sells new apartments in the same high-rise development before and after obtaining green certification. This allows the use of within-development variation in prices over time to measure the effect of green certification on housing prices, controlling for differences across developments. I find that green certification increases prices by around 3%, suggesting that buyers value certification, possibly because it signals the presence of less-salient green features. Moreover, the effect of certification is biggest for developments that receive the lowest green rating, which likely have fewer green features and are thus less obviously green.

The “Quebec Values” Debate Of 2013: Minority Vs. Collective Rights, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Feb 2018

The “Quebec Values” Debate Of 2013: Minority Vs. Collective Rights, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the debate in the province of Quebec, Canada in 2013 over a Charter of Quebec Values introduced by the separatist ruling party, the Parti Quebecois. It relies in particular on government documents, debates in Quebec’s National Assembly, and editorials in the French press. It relates the Charter to the preceding Bouchard-Taylor Commission Report in 2008 on accommodation by public bodies of particular religious requests. The debates concerned the right to manifest one’s religion, the rights of (particularly Muslim) women, and the rights of the collectivity as opposed to the minority. Part of the debate was about Quebec’s …

A Lumberjack Sunflower, Blooming From Undergraduate Research, Robert J. Hurt, James Morris Feb 2018

A Lumberjack Sunflower, Blooming From Undergraduate Research, Robert J. Hurt, James Morris

Student Publications

It was one year ago in spring 2017 when I did not understand how to write research, let alone be confident in it. In the fall 2016 semester, I was part of a class project that worked to provide donations to families affected by flooding in Louisiana. In the following spring 2017 semester, I worked to present my own findings and practice from that project towards a research paper. From that paper I earned the opportunity to be part of an Undergraduate Research Conference. In the timespan of one year from that conference to spring 2018, I worked harder in …

Lighting The Beacon: Presidential Discourse, American Exceptionalism, And Public Diplomacy In Global Contexts, Jason A. Gilmore, Charles Rowling Feb 2018

Lighting The Beacon: Presidential Discourse, American Exceptionalism, And Public Diplomacy In Global Contexts, Jason A. Gilmore, Charles Rowling

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The idea of American exceptionalism has shaped American politics and captivated audiences for centuries. This study examines the global contexts in which U.S. presidents have invoked the idea of American exceptionalism when addressing foreign audiences since the end of World War II. Our results reveal: (a) differences in how U.S. presidents invoke American exceptionalism when speaking to a global audience (e.g., the United Nations) versus more localized, foreign audiences within individual states; (b) significant variation regarding which countries are more likely to be targets of American exceptionalism in U.S. presidential discourse; and (c) the profound impact that the end of …
