Putting The Patient Back In Patient Care: Health Decision-Making From The Patient’S Perspective, Bill R. Garris, Amy J. Weber Feb 2018

Putting The Patient Back In Patient Care: Health Decision-Making From The Patient’S Perspective, Bill R. Garris, Amy J. Weber

The Qualitative Report

This research explored health decision-making processes among people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Our analysis suggested that diagnosis with type 2 was followed by a period of intense emotional and cognitive disequilibrium. Subsequently, the informants were observed to proceed to health decision-making which was affected by three separate and interrelated factors: knowledge, self-efficacy, and purpose. Knowledge included cognitive or factual components and emotional elements. Knowledge influenced the degree of upset or disequilibrium the patient experienced, and affected a second category, agency: the informants’ confidence in their ability to enact lifestyle changes. The third factor, purpose, summarized the personal and …

Prioritising Doctoral Students’ Wellbeing In Qualitative Research, Stefania Velardo, Sam Elliott Feb 2018

Prioritising Doctoral Students’ Wellbeing In Qualitative Research, Stefania Velardo, Sam Elliott

The Qualitative Report

As novice researchers, doctoral students undertaking qualitative research become well-versed in strategies that should be adopted to minimise risk to participants. But what happens when a researcher is confronted with the complex, emotional account of a participant? Despite the consistent emphasis on participant safety, many doctoral students are not explicitly prompted to consider how they will negotiate their own emotional wellbeing throughout the research process. This is particularly important when conducting qualitative research with vulnerable populations. In these situations, sensitive and difficult topics are often discussed, with numerous risks to participants and researchers alike. However, concern for researcher wellbeing is …

A Comprehensive Review Of Seven Steps To A Comprehensive Literature Review, Jan Kirksey Williams 8272621 Feb 2018

A Comprehensive Review Of Seven Steps To A Comprehensive Literature Review, Jan Kirksey Williams 8272621

The Qualitative Report

Onwuegbuzie and Frels (2015) provide the framework for evaluating current research and present seven steps for developing a Comprehensive Literature Review. Today a significant dilemma of research involves the sparse number of rigorous, empirical research studies to guide development of best practices of writing. The authors describe the purpose of their book as “a tool and guide for master’s-level students, doctoral-level students, and new and experienced researchers” to approach writing a CLR in a through and investigative way. The thrust and challenge is for researchers to concentrate on improving their methods and practices when reviewing topics with strong potential for …

An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Climate Challenge, Nicholas Barnes, Leslie Cook, Brandon Sharpton Feb 2018

An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Climate Challenge, Nicholas Barnes, Leslie Cook, Brandon Sharpton

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The temperature in our atmosphere is steadily rising; therefore, we need a method of communicating climate risk that educates and motivates people faster than the rising sea level. Our presentation analyzes the communicative effectiveness of Climate Challenge, a game created for this purpose. We will also analyze and utilize prior research of climate change games and serious games. We gathered participants for our research using convenience and snowball sampling. We conducted a pre-test survey and post-test interview, along with a screencast-recorded playthrough of Climate Challenge. After the research session we used grounded theory and inductive thematic analysis to …

Assessing The Benefits Of College Climbing Programs: Applying The Perceived Health Outcomes Of Recreation Scale, Peter Ahl, Eddie Hill, Cienna Gabriele, Edwin Gomez, Amy Direnzo Feb 2018

Assessing The Benefits Of College Climbing Programs: Applying The Perceived Health Outcomes Of Recreation Scale, Peter Ahl, Eddie Hill, Cienna Gabriele, Edwin Gomez, Amy Direnzo

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Rock climbing is a sport that requires a participant to lift the body against gravity to climb on a rock face using the irregularities of the rock. On a highly rated climb, the rock face is “virtually perpendicular and the irregularities are very small” (Li, Margetts, & Fowler, 2001; Slanger & Rudestam, 1997, p. 359). Although some researchers have maintained that rock climbing involves both sensation seeking and risk taking as the key elements to one’s motivation for participation (Palmer, 2002), others have researched the possibility of characteristics that are unique to rock climbers, which set the rock climbing community …

Evaluating The Process Of View And Tanf Case Managers In Prince William County's Department Of Social Services, Morgan Lawson

Undergraduate Research Symposium

This project goes through the process of conducting an evaluation on the VIEW and TANF caseworkers for Prince William County's Department of Social Services. This process goes from developing an evaluation question to designing an evaluation protocol, and then using that protocol to do the evaluation. The evaluation was centered around the question, “How effectively are PWC's TANF caseworkers being prepared to handle their cases in a way that helps the Department of Social Services fulfill their mission of enabling their clients to live self-reliant lives?”. Based on the nature of this question, the evaluation conducted was a process evaluation, …

A Systematic Review Of Universal, Teacher-Led Interventions Targeting Anxiety In U.S. Schools, Sonja F. Tutsch, Patrick Fowler, Gaurav Kumar, Adam Weaver, Brian Mckevitt, Denise Britigan, Christian I.J. Minter, Lorena Baccaglini

Posters and Presentations: College of Public Health

Implications of anxiety symptomatology experienced among children and adolescents in the US constitute a major public health crisis, calling for promising universal mental health interventions in K-12 schools. Schools represent an ideal setting for the implementation of population based, public health interventions, as children and adolescents spend a significant proportion of time in school. Discussions within the scientific community document several advantages to utilization of universal, Tier1 interventions. However, the efficacy of universal, school-based anxiety interventions in the US are not consistently documented. The purpose of this study is to systematically review the literature to identify the efficacy of universal …

Us Immigration Enforcement And The Making Of Unintended Returnees, Oscar F. Gil-Garcia Feb 2018

Us Immigration Enforcement And The Making Of Unintended Returnees, Oscar F. Gil-Garcia

Human Development Faculty Scholarship

US immigration enforcement has led to a rise in the number of deportations. Several studies identify deportees as more likely to attempt re-entry to reunify with family members in a variety of international settings. These demographic changes have prompted some scholars to theorize how deportation produces a unique mobility subject: the unintended returnee. The importance of studying unintended returnees is amplified when we examine the 3.1 million unauthorized migrants deported by the US between 2005-2013. Over 1.5 million children living in the US were impacted by these removals. Data from the US Department of Homeland Security, indicate that among those …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The use and continuous use of the website in the developed countries universities are predominant, and the developing countries universities are heightening their effort in the aspect of education technology. The reason why one university website is better than the other concerning quality and accessibility is the focus of this study and this prompt evaluation of 141 Universities in Nigeria across the Federal, State, and the Private ownership. We opted for a hybrid approach to cover the gap in the previous studies. WebQual and SITEQUAL as a framework is adopted based on the web analytical tools. The study contributes theoretically …

Mentalizing, Personal Prayer, The Presence Of God, And Evil, Laird Edman, Chris Sietstra, Molly Townsend, Corey Kundert, Hope Deruyter, Rebekah Muilenberg, Virginia Kjer, Riley Harder Feb 2018

Mentalizing, Personal Prayer, The Presence Of God, And Evil, Laird Edman, Chris Sietstra, Molly Townsend, Corey Kundert, Hope Deruyter, Rebekah Muilenberg, Virginia Kjer, Riley Harder

Northwestern Review

People who believe in a relational, personal deity, conceptualize god(s) as intentional agents with mental states. Hence it follows that mentalizing or theory of mind may be one of the cognitive foundations of religious belief and behavior. This study examined this relationship as it corresponds to reported prayer experiences, intimacy with god, and experience of agentic evil.

Engaging Democracy: The Trouble With Trump, Jeff Vanderwerff Feb 2018

Engaging Democracy: The Trouble With Trump, Jeff Vanderwerff

Northwestern Review

In its original version, this brief essay was delivered as a talk on the Northwestern College campus. The author reflects on Christian evangelical engagement in politics in “The Age of Trump”—as a believer, a political scientist, and a former candidate for state legislative office. Love, he argues—God’s love for us, and our love for God—is the key. As God’s love for each and all was made manifest in Christ on the cross, evangelicals should not lose sight of such love in engaging in public debate and policy-making. Insofar as uncritical evangelical support for Trump is the case, that is politics …

The Use Of Anecdotal Information In A Hypothetical Lung Cancer Treatment Decision, Preston Brown, Victor Kwan, Michael Vallerga, Hardeep Obhi, Erin Woodhead

Faculty Publications

This mixed-methods study examined variables associated with use of experience-based (i.e., anecdotal) decisional strategies among 85 undergraduate students presented with 2 hypothetical lung cancer scenarios. Participants were asked to think aloud while they made their treatment choice. Eleven decisional strategies were identified and grouped into either data or experience-based strategies. Approximately, 25% of participants used experience-based strategies. Use of experience-based strategies was more likely if the participant reported involvement in the life of someone going through cancer treatment, and if they rated print-based media sources as less important. Use of experience-based strategies was associated with choosing surgery instead of radiation …

Evaluation Of Route Changes Utilizing High-Resolution Gps Bus Transit Data, Travis Bradley Glick Feb 2018

Evaluation Of Route Changes Utilizing High-Resolution Gps Bus Transit Data, Travis Bradley Glick

PSU Transportation Seminars

Congestion and travel delay on urban roadways can influence operating costs and service attractiveness. This research uses high resolution bus data to examine sources of delay on urban arterials. A set of tools was created to help visualize trends in bus behavior and movement; this allowed larger traffic trends to be visualized along urban corridors and urban streets. By using buses as probes and examining aggregated bus behavior, contoured speed plots can be used to understand the behavior of roadways outside the zone of influence of bus stops. Speed plots can be utilized to discover trends and travel patterns with …

Excerpts From The Novel, Bear War-Den, Vivian Demuth

The Goose

A woman park warden who works in Rocky Mountain National Park spends her time on such tasks as bear patrol, locating tourists who are lost or in other physical danger, and policing park rules. She has a particular affinity for grizzly bears, largely stemming from an experience she had in a Neolithic cave in Spain. During her work and her travels, she observes various ways in which bears are mistreated in parks, sometimes even by researchers with seemingly good intentions. While an out-of-control fire rages through the national park, the woman park warden, with two grizzly bear skulls in hand, …

Manuscript Preparation Rules And Guidelines, February 2018

Insecta Mundi

Insecta Mundi is an ongoing experiment in publishing. Our goal is to produce taxonomic publications that are free for authors (no page charges) and openly accessible for users (see Skelley and Thomas 2007). To accomplish this, we require the participation of authors in the publication process. Authors are required to make their manuscripts publishable by our standards prior to submission. Authors unwilling or unable to follow the guidelines should ask friends for help or consider paying to have their article published in journals which charge for the services.

The purposes for these rules and guidelines are to ensure consistency in …

Culture Shift: Facilitating Institutional Culture Change To Boost The Adoption, Use, And Sharing Of Oers, Stephanie Walker

Librarian Posters and Presentations

In 2015, the University of North Dakota (UND) had no institutional program to promote adoption, creation, or utilization of Open Educational Resources (OERs). That September, UND’s new Dean of Library & Information Resources was given a mandate to advocate for OERs. Initial campus climate was resistant; a respected senior faculty member gave a speech in opposition to OERs at the University Senate, claiming OERs infringed on academic freedom. In 2 years, we’ve achieved a major cultural shift. UND has become a state leader in OERs. We are on our 4th round of funding for faculty stipends, workshops, and support for …

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study assesses the reliability of Google Street View (GSV) in auditing environmental features that help create hotbeds of drug dealing in Belo Horizonte, one of Brazil’s largest cities. Based on concepts of “crime generators” and “crime enablers,” a set of 40 items were selected using arrest data related to drug activities for the period between 2007 and 2011. These items served to develop a GSV data collection instrument used to observe features of 135 street segments that were identified as drug dealing hot spots in downtown Belo Horizonte. The study employs an intra-class correlation (ICC) statistics as a measure …

A Cardiology Exhibit At A Science Museum, Viewed As Speech Acts In Sequence, David H. Lee

Publications and Research

An exhibit about cardiology at a science museum is an elaborate form of health communication, with messaging happening across text, pictures, models, and videos. This qualitative case study uses concepts of speech act sequencing and interpellation to explain a series of multimodal exhibits about cardiovascular health. Health exhibits are described as verbal and audiovisual arguments combining assertions of information; directives to change behavior, and designations of risk candidacy—or sequences of assertive, directive, and declarative speech acts. Visitors are targeted as heart disease candidates according to their risk factors, such as hypertension, overweight, and inactivity. Communication research focused on health exhibits …
