Abstract: "The United States lags behind many Asian countries in engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). An unexplored factor in these country-level differences may be U.S.–Asia gaps in perceptions of the goal opportunities provided by STEM. Across four studies, U.S. students perceived fewer communal opportunities (working with/helping/relationships with others) in STEM than Asian students; this differential perception contributed to U.S.–Asia gaps in STEM interest. Perceptions of communal opportunities in STEM did not follow from a general orientation to perceive that all careers provided communal opportunities but from communal engagement in STEM. Perceptions about communal opportunities in STEM predicted …

The fall semester flew by so quickly and now I’m finding myself serving on the Holley Intern Search Committee…..meaning that my internship is almost over.
With that in mind, I wanted to give a quick update on my thoughts from the fall semester, during which time I worked half-days in Technical Services and Research and Instruction. All in all, I was [pleasantly] surprised. When I first heard that I would be rotating through Technical Services and Research and Instruction at the same time, I thought my work in both departments would be unrelated. I mean, Technical Services sounds like it …

Heart Rate-Defined Sustained Attention In Infants At Risk For Autism, Bridgette L. Tonnsen, J. E. Richards, Jane E. Roberts
Faculty Publications
Background: Although aberrant visual attention has been identified in infants at high familial risk for autism, the developmental emergence of atypical attention remains unclear. Integrating biological measures of attention into prospective high-risk infant studies may inform more nuanced developmental trajectories, clarifying the onset and course of atypical attention and potentially advancing early screening or treatment protocols. Heart rate-defined sustained attention (HRDSA) is a well-validated biological measure of attentional engagement that, in non-clinical infant populations, provides incremental information about attentional engagement beyond looking behaviors alone. The present study aimed to examine the characteristics and clinical correlates of HRDSA in high-risk infants, …

Despite growing interest in Open Access (OA) to scholarly literature, there is an unmet need for large-scale, up-to-date, and reproducible studies assessing the prevalence and characteristics of OA. We address this need using oaDOI, an open online service that determines OA status for 67 million articles. We use three samples, each of 100,000 articles, to investigateOAin three populations: (1) all journal articles assigned a Crossref DOI, (2) recent journal articles indexed in Web of Science, and (3) articles viewed by users of Unpaywall, an open-source browser extension that lets users find OA articles using oaDOI. We estimate that at least …

Taking Child Development Accounts To Scale: Ten Key Policy Design Elements, Michael Sherraden, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly
Center for Social Development Research
The United States subsidizes asset accumulation for middle- and especially high-income families through the federal income tax system. Low-income families are much less likely than high-income families to benefit from these policies. The vision for Child Development Accounts (CDAs) has been for a universal and progressive policy aimed at long-term asset building for all. Bringing CDAs to scale nationwide in a sustainable manner will require a national policy structure, so that all children can build assets. This brief aims to advance universal and progressive CDAs by identifying 10 key design elements that can be implemented and sustained at scale.
The Relationship Between Social Media Advertising Engagement And Attitudes Toward Advertising On Social Media: Focusing On Facebook Users, Seungho Chung
Student Theses and Dissertations
People often engage with social media ads - such as ads on their Facebook news feed - by liking, commenting, or sharing the advertisements they see. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between such social media ad engagement and the effectiveness of social media ad messages using the context of Facebook, the dominant social media platform. More specifically, the study investigates the relationship between Facebook users’ ad engagement and attitudes toward Facebook ads. The study also investigates the potential moderating influence of immersion, motivation, and gender. Results from a survey of Facebook users (N= 218) showed Facebook ad engagement …

Utilization Of Long-Term Care By An Aging Population, Reagan Baughma, Jon Hurdelbrink
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Reagan Baughman and Jon Hurdelbrink examine the relationship between macroeconomic conditions, as measured by the national unemployment rate, and utilization of long-term care, as measured by respondents’ reports in the Health and Retirement Study of what type of care they received in the past month to help with daily activities. Long-term care for older adults can take the form of nursing home care, formal (paid) home care, or informal (unpaid) home care. Almost 1 in 5 individuals over the age of 65 gets some type of help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, …
Understanding The Effects Of Legalizing Undocumented Immigrants, Joan Monras, Javier Vázquez-Grenno, Ferran Elias
Understanding The Effects Of Legalizing Undocumented Immigrants, Joan Monras, Javier Vázquez-Grenno, Ferran Elias
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper investigates the consequences of the legalization of around 600,000 immigrants by the unexpectedly elected Spanish government of Zapatero following the terrorist attacks of March 2004 (Garcia-Montalvo, 2011). Using detailed data from payroll-tax revenues, we estimate that each newly legalized immigrant increased local payroll-tax revenues by 4,189 euros on average. This estimate is only 55 percent of what we would have expected from the size of the influx of newly documented immigrants, which suggests that newly legalized immigrants probably earned lower wages than other workers and maybe affected the labor-market outcomes of those other workers. We estimate that the …

Proneness To Guilt, Shame, And Pride In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Neurotypical Children, Denise Davidson, Elizabeth Hilvert, Ieva Misiunaite, Michael Giordano
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Self‐conscious emotions (e.g., guilt, shame, and pride) are complex emotions that require self‐reflection and self‐evaluation, and are thought to facilitate the maintenance of societal norms and personal standards. Despite the importance of self‐conscious emotions, most research has focused on basic emotion processing in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Therefore, in the present study, we used the Test of Self‐Conscious Affect for Children (TOSCA‐C) to assess proneness to, or propensity to experience, the self‐conscious emotions guilt, shame, and pride in children with ASD and neurotypical children. The TOSCA‐C is designed to capture a child's natural tendency to experience a given …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Immature Lucilia sericata (Meigen) raised on beef liver, beef heart, pork liver and pork heart at a mean temperature of 20.6°C took a minimum of 20 days to complete development. Minimum development time differences within stages were observed between the meat types (pork/beef), but not the organ types (liver/heart). Daily hyperspectral measurements were conducted and a functional regression was completed to examine the main effects of meat and organ type on daily spectral measurements. The model examined post feeding larval spectral measurements of insects raised on beef liver alone, the effect of those raised on pork compared with those raised …
