A Spatial Analysis Of Ceramics In Northwestern Alaska: Studying Pre-Contact Gendered Use Of Space, Katelyn Elizabeth Braymer-Hayes Mar 2018

A Spatial Analysis Of Ceramics In Northwestern Alaska: Studying Pre-Contact Gendered Use Of Space, Katelyn Elizabeth Braymer-Hayes

Dissertations and Theses

Activities and production among ethnographic Arctic peoples were primarily divided by gender. This gendered division of labor also extended to a spatial segregated pattern of the household in some Arctic cultures. Other cultures had a more gender-integrated spatial pattern of the household. There have been very few archaeological studies of gender in the Arctic, and even fewer studies of gendered use of space.

In this thesis, I evaluated the existence of this gendered use of space in pre-contact Northwest Alaska. I also evaluated the existence of discrete activity spaces. I drew from both ethnoarchaeology and gender/feminist archaeology to both construct …

Benevolent Sexism And Racial Stereotypes: Targets, Functions, And Consequences, Jean Marie Mcmahon Mar 2018

Benevolent Sexism And Racial Stereotypes: Targets, Functions, And Consequences, Jean Marie Mcmahon

Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I present three manuscripts in which I integrate race into an ambivalent sexism framework using experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional methods. The first paper tests whether a female's race acts as a subtype to differentially elicit benevolent sexism (BS). Two experiments demonstrated that BS is more strongly associated with White women than Black women. The second paper explores the relationship between protective paternalism (a subcomponent of BS), anti-minority attitudes, and threat. Threat was associated with stronger endorsement of protective paternalism and a corresponding increase in anti-minority attitudes, particularly for White men, implicating BS in the maintenance of racial …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

The attitude of some of the library and information science instructors (LISIs) to continue to teach students with pedagogies not aligned with the changing trend in today’s information environment has been identified as one of the reasons why there is low job performance among librarians in their workplaces in Nigeria. This study is aimed to find out the most preferred pedagogy adopted by LISIs in the University based library and information science school programme in South East, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was designed and distributed to 138 librarians with the help of research assistants by face to face contact. …

Examining The Impact Of Fantasy And Cosplay On Work-Life Balance, Savannah Jo Stevens Mar 2018

Examining The Impact Of Fantasy And Cosplay On Work-Life Balance, Savannah Jo Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

The popularity concerning science-fiction and fantasy has risen exponentially. This increase in acceptance means that the impact of engaging in fantasy and cosplay has on an individual’s worklife balance requires examination. Relationships among fantasy engagement, para-social interactions, work-life balance, and identity were analyzed. Responses from 124 participants revealed a primary pattern concerning these constructs. Findings indicated some strains were experienced by occupying work and fantasy-related roles, but the gains achieved were far more significant. Findings also revealed this pattern when the connection between parasocial interactions and work-life balance was examined. Additionally, the relationship between fantasy engagement and para-social interactions, as …

Multiplatform Software Tool To Disaggregate And Adjust Value-Added Learning Scores, Ben O. Smith

Economics Faculty Publications

In 2016, Walstad and Wagner released an article that suggested practitioners should disaggregate value-added learning scores into four categories: positive, negative, retained, and zero learning. Positive learning is said to occur when a student answers a question incorrectly on the pre-test and correctly on the post-test. Negative learning is said to occur when the student correctly answers the question on the pre-test but incorrectly on the post-test. Retained learning is said to occur when the student answers the question correctly on both exams and zero learning is said to occur when the student answers the question incorrectly on both exams. …

Performance Evaluation Of Choice Set Generation Algorithms For Modeling Truck Route Choice: Insights From Large Streams Of Truck-Gps Data, Divyakant Tahlyan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis evaluates truck route choice set generation algorithms and derives guidance on using the algorithms for effective generation of choice sets for modeling truck route choice. Specifically, route choice sets generated from a breadth first search link elimination (BFS-LE) algorithm are evaluated against observed truck routes derived from large streams of GPS traces of a sizeable truck fleet in the Tampa Bay region of Florida. A systematic evaluation approach is presented to arrive at an appropriate combination of spatial aggregation and minimum number of trips to be observed between each origin-destination (OD) location for evaluating algorithm-generated choice sets. The …
