Background: A large number of highly impactful technologies originated from academic research, and the transfer of inventions from academic institutions to private industry is a major driver of economic growth, and a catalyst for further discovery. However, there are significant inefficiencies in academic technology transfer. In this work, we conducted a data-driven assessment of translational activity across United States (U.S.) institutions to better understand how effective universities are in facilitating the transfer of new technologies into the marketplace. From this analysis, we provide recommendations to guide technology transfer policy making at both the university and national level.
Methods: Using data …
Working Paper No. 08, A Non-Equilibrium Approach To Economics: Towards An Intellectual Biography Of Gunnar Myrdal, Leo Kendall
Working Paper No. 08, A Non-Equilibrium Approach To Economics: Towards An Intellectual Biography Of Gunnar Myrdal, Leo Kendall
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that Gunnar Myrdal provided a foundation for and also practiced a non-equilibrium approach to economics. Throughout his career, Gunnar Myrdal was tasked with researching and providing policy for some of the most pressing economic issues of the 20th century. This inquiry considers and examines what I have selected as the most important areas of research over the span of Myrdal’s career, while showing how and why a nonequilibrium was required. First, I start with racial inequality and how Myrdal’s research broke ground on the subject. Next, I consider his key contribution towards understanding regional inequality …
A Theory Of Focal Points In 2x2 Games, Jonathan W. Leland, Mark Schneider
A Theory Of Focal Points In 2x2 Games, Jonathan W. Leland, Mark Schneider
ESI Publications
Since the classic work of Schelling, the notion of a focal point has been widely applied to explain coordinated behavior. However, focal points remain largely outside the formal apparatus of game theory. This paper develops a model of play in 2 × 2 games where payoff differences determine what strategy players will perceive as “salient” and choose to play. The model uniquely predicts which outcome will emerge for virtually the entire class of 2 × 2 normal form games. For the subset of such games involving coordination and asymmetric payoffs, payoff differences identify focal outcomes and strategies in the same …

Assessing Psychological Inflexibility In University Students: Development And Validation Of The Acceptance And Action Questionnaire For University Students (Aaq-Us), Michael E. Levin, Jennifer Krafft, Jacqueline Pistorello, John R. Seeley
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study sought to develop and validate a domain-specific measure of psychological inflexibility for university students, the acceptance and action questionnaire for university students (AAQ-US). Generic versions of the AAQ tend to not be as sensitive to changes in campus-specific functioning —a key outcome of interest in this population. An online survey was conducted with 425 undergraduate students. Psychometric analyses led to the refinement of a 12-item, single factor scale with strong internal consistency. Evidence for convergent validity was found with moderate to large correlations between the AAQ-US and measures of academic outcomes, mental health, and psychological inflexibility. The AAQ-US …

Capturing Graduate Research: Creation Of The Graduate Online Symposium At Minnesota State University, Mankato, Heidi J. Southworth
Library Services Publications
In 2017, Library Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato, in collaboration with our College of Graduate Studies and Research, launched the first annual Graduate Online Symposium. This event was designed to showcase the research, scholarly and creative activities of our graduate students. Rather than presenting at an on-campus forum, we gave our graduate students (both on-campus and off-campus) an opportunity to be able to share their research in an open, online environment. The Graduate Online Symposium allowed our graduate students the chance to record brief 15-minute presentations about their research and creative activities. These digital presentations were then made available …

The Anchor, Volume 131.20: March 14, 2018, Hope College
The Anchor: 2018
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
The Othering Of Donald Trump And His Supporters, Stephen D. Cooper Ph.D.
The Othering Of Donald Trump And His Supporters, Stephen D. Cooper Ph.D.
Communications Faculty Research
The 2016 presidential election was extraordinary in many respects. One was the way in which the Republican candidate and his supporters were disparaged in the establishment press. Although it is a truism that politics can often be rough (as in the sayings, 'It ain't beanbag" and "It’s a contact sport') and any apparent civility in the rhetoric is often just a mask in front of bareknuckle tactics, many observers have noted that the 2016 election became especially rough.
Further, the attacks on candidate Donald Trump and his supporters came not only from political opponents- which would be expected-but also from …

Organizing Under Austerity: How Residents’ Concerns Became The Flint Water Crisis, Amy Krings, Dana Kornberg, Erin Lane
Organizing Under Austerity: How Residents’ Concerns Became The Flint Water Crisis, Amy Krings, Dana Kornberg, Erin Lane
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
What might it take for politically marginalized residents to challenge cuts in public spending that threaten to harm their health and wellbeing? Specifically, how did residents of Flint, Michigan contribute to the decision of an austerity regime, which was not accountable to them, to spend millions to switch to a safe water source? Relying on evidence from key interviews and newspaper accounts, we examine the influence and limitations of residents and grassroots groups during the 18-month period between April 2014 and October 2015 when the city drew its water from the Flint River. We find that citizen complaints alone were …

Early Intervention Aba For Toddlers With Asd: Effect Of Age And Amount, Peter Vietze, Leah Esther Lax
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability manifested early in life. About 26–40% of young children with ASD have intellectual disability (ID). Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of ASD and improving cognitive and language function. The purpose of this study was to examine the optimal age, number of treatment hours and domains, for which ABA was effective in a community based early intervention program. An ABA program was implemented with 106 toddlers under 40 months, many of whom were from immigrant families with limited English proficiency. Bayley Scales, VBMAPP and CARS-2 …

U. S. Fiscal Policy And Asset Prices: The Role Of Partisan Conflict, Rangan Gupta, Chi Keung Marco Lau, Stephen M. Miller, Mark E. Wohar
Molasky Family Department of Economics and Real Estate Faculty Research
Fiscal policy shocks exert wide-reaching effects, including movements in asset markets. US politics have been characterized historically by a high degree of partisan conflict. The combination of increasing polarization and divided government leads not only to significant Congressional gridlock, but also to spells of high fiscal policy uncertainty. This paper adds to the literature on the relationships between fiscal policy and asset prices in the US economy conditional on the degree of partisan conflict. We analyze whether a higher degree of partisan conflict (legislative gridlock) reduces the efficacy of the effect and response of fiscal policy on and to asset …

Narrative Leadership: Exploring The Concept Of Time In Leader Storytelling, Helen H. Chung Dr.
Narrative Leadership: Exploring The Concept Of Time In Leader Storytelling, Helen H. Chung Dr.
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
This dissertation explores leader storytelling and the use of temporality in leader enactment. Although narrative leadership is broadly described in previous theory as leading with storytelling, a formal theory of narrative leadership has not yet been developed. Recently, researchers have identified the narrator’s ability to locate a story within a meaningful time continuum of past, present, and future as potentially important. Using a grounded theory approach, the question that guided the research was: How does the use of time in narrative impact the enactment of leadership during a strategic change?
With the goal of developing a theory that emerges from …

Investigating The Effects Of Adult Insecure Attachment On Interpersonal Attraction, Fiona B. Kurtz Ms.
Investigating The Effects Of Adult Insecure Attachment On Interpersonal Attraction, Fiona B. Kurtz Ms.
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
The present study examined the relationship between variables of insecure attachment and feelings of initial attraction between young adults. Previous research has consistently supported the positive link between anxious attachment and hyperactivation of the attachment system in adults, resulting in preoccupied proximity seeking evaluations and behaviors. As such, emerging findings suggest that anxious attachment contributes to elevated levels of interpersonal attraction upon initial meetings with others, particularly those who may serve as future romantic partners. Despite a growing body of literature, little is known or understood about the impact of avoidant attachment in shaping early views of others, or how …

Jurnal Wacana Politik

A concern of all academic Interlibrary Loan Departments is having faculty/ staff & students request materials already owned by their home library. The Interlibrary Loan Department conducted a qualitative research study with IRB approval to explore this concern. In this session, the presenters will describe how data suggest a more streamlined approach to redirecting searches originating in the library for outside sources to assets already physically (or electronically) stored in the library. We will discuss our research process and how we partnered with other departments in the library. Our findings were useful to our Discovery Services managers and our instruction …
