Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

This study is a quantitative analysis of cirques in three regions of Iceland: Tröllaskagi, the East Fjords and Vestfirðir. Using Google Earth and the National Land Survey of Iceland Map Viewer, we identified 347 new cirques on Tröllaskagi and the East Fjords region, and combined these data with 100 cirques previously identified on Vestfirðir. We used ArcGIS to measure length, width, aspect, latitude and distance to coastline of each cirque. Palaeo‐equilibrium‐line altitudes (palaeo‐ELAs) of palaeo‐cirque glaciers were calculated using the altitude‐ratio method, cirque‐floor method and minimum‐point method. The mean palaeo‐ELA values in Tröllaskagi, the East Fjords and Vestfirðir are 788, …

Operationalizing The Pressure And Release Theoretical Framework Using Risk Ratio Analysis To Measure Vulnerability And Predict Risk From Natural Hazards In The Tampa, Fl Metropolitan Area, Jessica A. Wilder Mar 2018

Operationalizing The Pressure And Release Theoretical Framework Using Risk Ratio Analysis To Measure Vulnerability And Predict Risk From Natural Hazards In The Tampa, Fl Metropolitan Area, Jessica A. Wilder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Significant damage and loss is experienced every year due to natural hazards such as hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, floods, wildfires, volcanoes, and earthquakes. NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) reports that in 2016 the United States experienced more than a dozen climate disaster events with damages and loss in excess of a billion dollars (NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, 2017). Identifying vulnerabilities and risk associated with disaster threats is now a major focus of natural hazards research. Natural hazards research has yielded numerous theoretical frameworks over the last 25 years that have explained important elements of risk and vulnerability …

Development Of The Routines And Time Management Inventory For Young Adults, Morgan Ashwill Grinnell Mar 2018

Development Of The Routines And Time Management Inventory For Young Adults, Morgan Ashwill Grinnell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Routines are observable and repetitive behavior patterns that are context specific and help to automate aspects of daily life (Sytsma, Kelley, & Wymer, 2001; Zisberg, Young, Schepp, & Zysberg, 2007). The presence of routines in an individual’s life promotes overall functioning, and irregular routines have been associated with poorer physical and psychological health (Margraf, Lavallee, Zhang, & Schneider, 2016). Time management skills, such as those required to plan, prioritize, and execute tasks are crucial to cultivating stable routines. Although measures of routines exist for children, adolescents, families, and older adults, the routines of younger adults have been neglected.

The purpose …

Let's Get This Meeting Started: Meeting Lateness And Actual Meeting Outcomes, Joseph A. Allen, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Steven G. Rogelberg Mar 2018

Let's Get This Meeting Started: Meeting Lateness And Actual Meeting Outcomes, Joseph A. Allen, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Steven G. Rogelberg

Psychology Faculty Publications

Meeting lateness is pervasive and potentially highly consequential for individuals, groups, and organizations. In Study 1, we first examined base rates of lateness to meetings in an employee sample and found that meeting lateness is negatively related to both meeting satisfaction and effectiveness. We then conducted two lab studies to better understand the nature of this negative relationship between meeting lateness and meeting outcomes. In Study 2, we manipulated meeting lateness using a confederate and showed that participants' anticipated meeting satisfaction and effectiveness was significantly lower when meetings started late. In Study 3, participants holding actual group meetings were randomly …

Pathways Linking Family Stress To Youth Delinquency And Substance Use: Exploring The Mediating Roles Of Self-Efficacy And Future Orientation, Dexter R. Voisin Mar 2018

Pathways Linking Family Stress To Youth Delinquency And Substance Use: Exploring The Mediating Roles Of Self-Efficacy And Future Orientation, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

African American adolescents in poorer neighborhoods experience significant sanctions related to drug use and delinquency. Parental stress (i.e. substance use, mental distress, and incarceration) is associated with youth drug use and delinquency. We examined whether high self-esteem and positive future orientation mediated parental stress and youth substance use and delinquency. Demographic, family stress, future orientation, self-esteem, and drug use data were collected from 578 youths. Major findings indicated that self-esteem mediated the relationship between family stress and both drug use and delinquency. Future mediated the relationship between family stress and delinquency. Resiliency factors may promote positive development for low-income youth.

Left-Wing And Right-Wing Terrorism In The United States, Alex Rant, Paul Jones, Nathanael Robinson Mar 2018

Left-Wing And Right-Wing Terrorism In The United States, Alex Rant, Paul Jones, Nathanael Robinson

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

This paper assesses whether there is causality between Left-Wing and Right-Wing Terrorist attacks in the United States. A Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) Model is estimated for the two variables. A Granger Causality test and Impulse Response Functions are examined to understand the relationship between the two variables. Both terrorist attacks appear to Granger Cause each other, but an analysis of the Impulse Response Functions reveals that Right-Wing Terrorism yields a stronger response from Left-Wing groups than Left-Wing terrorism does from Right-Wing groups. Nonetheless, there are strong elements of causality and response between the two groups.

The Relationship Between College Study Abroad And Perceptions Of Self-Confidence And Confident Behavior, Taylor Hallock, Cindy Miller-Perrin

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Study abroad participation is growing more common among college students in the U.S. but research on its effect on personal growth constructs such as confidence is limited. This study focused on the relationship between students who studied abroad and their perceived self-confidence and confident behavior compared to students who did not have a study abroad experience. Participants included 81 undergraduates, 48 who did not participate in a study abroad program (No Study Abroad) and 33 who did participate in a study abroad program (Study Abroad). Participants were assessed on levels of perceived self-confidence and confident behavior with the Personal Evaluation …

Factors Associated With Academic Stimulant Misuse In A College Setting, Gabrielle N. Pfund, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Steve V. Rouse Mar 2018

Factors Associated With Academic Stimulant Misuse In A College Setting, Gabrielle N. Pfund, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Steve V. Rouse

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The purpose of this study was to further understand and explore the motivations behind college students’ misuse of stimulants in an academic setting, in order to develop means to combat its growing popularity. We hypothesized that students would be more likely to misuse stimulants if 1) they perceive SM to be safe, 2) they perceive SM to be ethical, 3) they are more extrinsically motivated in an academic setting, 4) they perceive their academic environments to be competitive, and 5) they perceive SM to be normative.

Participants (n = 172) were undergraduate students at a small, Christian, liberal arts university …

Marketing Analysis Of Scholarly Journals In A Social World, Hunter Watson Mar 2018

Marketing Analysis Of Scholarly Journals In A Social World, Hunter Watson

Discovery Day - Prescott

The next methodology to the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) Social Media metrics is to determine if scholarly platforms for future use can benefit the AQR. The AQR authored by Dr. Brent Bowen and Dr. Dean Headley introduced the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) in 1993 as an objective method for comparing and scoring airline performance in areas deemed to be important for consumers. The quantitative metrics from utilizing new marketing techniques have increased the audience members attracted to this report. With a digitalized driven society, social media has been the main benefactor in gaining new attention. Continuing on the process to …

Roundtable: Supporting Professional Masters' Programs In Social Science And Policy Fields, Elisabeth Shields Mar 2018

Roundtable: Supporting Professional Masters' Programs In Social Science And Policy Fields, Elisabeth Shields

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Professional masters programs in the social sciences and policy fields prepare participants for middle and senior positions in the private sector, government, non-profits, and international organizations. In addition to ensuring further disciplinary knowledge, programs often include components on managerial, organizational, communication, policy analysis, and similar skills. Institutions are adding programs in interdisciplinary and emerging areas to their existing professional programs in business, counseling psychology, social work, and public administration.

Librarians face distinctive challenges in supporting such programs. Faculty teaching in these programs may be adjuncts unfamiliar with their institution’s library offerings and services. Some students have just completed undergraduate programs, …

Creating Transformative Connections With Graduate Students Using A Social Capital Framework, Mary J. Markland, Hannah Gascho Rempel Mar 2018

Creating Transformative Connections With Graduate Students Using A Social Capital Framework, Mary J. Markland, Hannah Gascho Rempel

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Graduate school is a transformative time for many students. It is also a time when they are part of an elite community of learners. For some students, this is an exciting adventure that allows them to explore new ideas and more fully express themselves. However, many graduate students also experience feelings of anxiety, frustration, and exclusion because they don’t feel like they really belong to this academic community. Graduate students sometimes struggle with how to navigate the new social norms, hierarchies, and structures built on many years of accumulated, implicit knowledge. These socially-based struggles frequently lead to lower levels of …

Becoming A Competent Graduate Librarian, Wendy Doucette Mar 2018

Becoming A Competent Graduate Librarian, Wendy Doucette

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

As I enter my fourth year as a graduate librarian (and my 10th year of academic librarianship and my 29th year of teaching), I’m struck by how my approach to graduate students continues to shift. To my surprise, every academic year has brought a new revelation concerning what our students don’t know and do need, which necessitates a corresponding revision of service on my part. Although “competence” is a relative term, I feel strongly that the needs of our graduate students—and the skills necessary for us as providers to fulfill these requirements—are similar to those at other institutions …

Literature And Scholarship In Times Of Crisis, Radost A. Rangelova

2017 College Authors

When I was asked to talk about research, and about my own research, I thought it was important to recognize that much of my work I owe, first, to Research and Professional Development Grants that I have been fortunate to receive at Gettysburg, and also to the people, resources, and institutions that opened their doors to me during the time that I’ve spent doing research in Puerto Rico, including at the University of Puerto Rico and at the National Archives of Theater and Film. Today I would like to speak briefly not only about doing research in Puerto Rico, but …

Preference Conformism: An Experiment, Enrique Fatas, Shaun P. Hargreaves Heap, David Rojo Arjona Mar 2018

Preference Conformism: An Experiment, Enrique Fatas, Shaun P. Hargreaves Heap, David Rojo Arjona

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This paper reports on an experiment designed to test whether people’s preferences change to become more alike. Such preference conformism would be worrying for an economics that takes individual preferences as given (‘de gustibus es non disputandum’). So the test is important. But it is also difficult. People can behave alike for many reasons and the key to the design of our test, therefore, is the control of the other possible reasons for observing apparent peer effects. We find evidence of preference conformism in the aggregate and at the individual level (where there is heterogeneity). It appears also to be …

Do We See Eye To Eye? Moderators Of Correspondence Between Student And Faculty Evaluations Of Day-To-Day Teaching, Kathleen M. Cain, Benjamin M. Wilkowski, Christopher P. Barlett, Colleen D. Boyle, Brian P. Meier Mar 2018

Do We See Eye To Eye? Moderators Of Correspondence Between Student And Faculty Evaluations Of Day-To-Day Teaching, Kathleen M. Cain, Benjamin M. Wilkowski, Christopher P. Barlett, Colleen D. Boyle, Brian P. Meier

Psychology Faculty Publications

Students and instructors show moderate levels of agreement about the quality of day-to-day teaching. In the present study, we replicated and extended this finding by asking how correspondence between student and instructor ratings is moderated by time of semester and student demographic variables. Participants included 137 students and 5 instructors. On 10 separate days, students and instructors rated teaching effectiveness and challenge level of the material. Multilevel modeling indicated that student and instructor ratings of teaching effectiveness converged overall, but more advanced students and Caucasian students converged more closely with instructors. Student and instructor ratings of challenge converged early but …

Using In-Vivo Audio Feedback To Improve Cycling Performance, Andrew Lee Coet Mar 2018

Using In-Vivo Audio Feedback To Improve Cycling Performance, Andrew Lee Coet

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many behavioral interventions have attempted to increase sports performance. These interventions include: goal setting and feedback, behavioral coaching, and acoustical guidance. The use of technological devices in all areas of life continues to steadily increase. Therefore, behavioral interventions should also adapt to meet these changes in technology. One such intervention is in-vivo audio feedback in which participants receive live feedback about their current performance while practicing the skill. In-vivo audio feedback has not yet been rigorously evaluated as a means of improving sports performance. This study used a multiple baseline across participants design to evaluate the effects of in-vivo audio …

The Effects Of A Task Analysis And Self-Evaluation On The Acquisition Of Yoga Postures, Elizabeth Ortega Mar 2018

The Effects Of A Task Analysis And Self-Evaluation On The Acquisition Of Yoga Postures, Elizabeth Ortega

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing amount of research evaluating behavioral approaches for skill acquisition in sports. Few of these studies have focused on yoga and skill acquisition. There is a need for a low effort yet effective way to teach yoga postures to individuals who do not take private yoga classes and may practice at home. This study evaluated the effects of using a picture-based task analysis and self-evaluation on the skill acquisition of yoga postures. A multiple baseline across yoga postures was used. During the task analyses intervention, the participants received a task analysis, performed the posture, and scored the …

The Role Of Organizational Justice In Predicting Attitudes Toward Body-Worn Cameras In Police Officers, Nathaniel L. Lawshe Mar 2018

The Role Of Organizational Justice In Predicting Attitudes Toward Body-Worn Cameras In Police Officers, Nathaniel L. Lawshe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Body-worn cameras are a promising new development in policing. They have been linked to positive outcomes such as decreases in use of force and complaints against officers. However, this new technology has produced a number of issues that could thwart a successful body-worn camera program implementation. One issue is the extent in which officers possess positive attitudes toward using body-worn cameras. If officers do not view body-worn cameras positively, cameras may not be used to their full potential.

A promising factor that has emerged from past research in explaining attitudes toward body-worn cameras is organizational justice. Broadly, organizational justice is …

A Change Would Do You Good: Transforming Archives With Cross-Sector Perspectives, Kayla Harris Mar 2018

A Change Would Do You Good: Transforming Archives With Cross-Sector Perspectives, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

The various “sectors” of archives and related professions, whether functional or institutional, increasingly diverge from each other in priorities, strategies, and constituencies. For the archivist or records manager changing positions across sectors, however, an opportunity exists to bring skills and insights learned in previous field(s) to transform the work being done in these new places. Cross-sector experiences also give archivists and records managers an opportunity to reflect on how their transitions have transformed their outlook on the profession as a whole, and their role within it. In this lightning round session, eight archivists will share how prior experience in a …
