Coolidge Against The World: Peace, Prosperity, And Foreign Policy In The 1920s, Joel Webster
Coolidge Against The World: Peace, Prosperity, And Foreign Policy In The 1920s, Joel Webster
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The common narrative of the 1920s is either to largely ignore the nation during this time and the men who presided over it or to simply dismiss the decade as a time of isolationism and Republican failure and the three presidents as corrupt, lazy, silent, or incompetent. The problems of the more typical narratives are most starkly shown in the realm of foreign policy. A more thorough examination of the role of President Calvin Coolidge and the American nation in that area reveals something very different. Because, if we approach those years as a “historical way station on the road …
Teaching Hate In The Name Of Good, Constance A. Dorn
Teaching Hate In The Name Of Good, Constance A. Dorn
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Hate groups are often portrayed as the province of men. Yet wives have not only supported their husbands in these groups, they have had their own organizations. These groups proclaim that their goal is not the propagation of hate, but some higher purpose, such as protecting America from that which is un-American. The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) sought to preserve the memory of the Confederacy, through memorials, parades, and the teaching of catechisms to the children ensuring that the right history was conveyed. Among many things, the children were taught to hate Northerners. Later during the 1920s, many …

Anti-Predator Behavior And Discriminative Abilities: Playback Experiments With Free-Ranging Equatorial Saki Monkeys (Pithecia Aequatorialis) In The Peruvian Amazon, Candace Stenzel
Graduate Theses
Anti-predator behaviors of free-ranging groups of equatorial saki monkeys (Pithecia aequatorialis) were recorded in the Área de Conservación Regional Comunal Tamshiyacu Tahuayo in the Peruvian Amazon to determine whether individuals responded in predator-specific ways to calls of aerial and terrestrial predators. Previous studies have shown that several species of Old World monkeys possess these discriminative abilities, but few have explored this question in New World monkeys. The ability to recognize predators and to respond appropriately is important for survival. Thus, we predicted that equatorial saki monkeys should respond in predator-specific ways, both vocally and behaviorally, to aerial and terrestrial predators. …

#Zika #Olympics: The Use Of Dialogue In Tweets Regarding The Zika Virus And The 2016 Rio Olympics, Daniel W. Vieth
#Zika #Olympics: The Use Of Dialogue In Tweets Regarding The Zika Virus And The 2016 Rio Olympics, Daniel W. Vieth
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Previous research has observed the use of social media by health organizations; however, few studies have addressed how health organizations use these media to build relationships with publics. This thesis addresses this gap by applying Kent and Taylor’s (2002) dialogic tenets to Twitter messages regarding the 2015-2016 Zika virus epidemic and the 2016 Rio Olympics. First a pilot study used a quantitative survey to find that individuals were using online media to seek information about Zika, and that the public generally had high threat salience toward the virus. Next, social network analyzer Netlytic was used to collect Tweets that mentioned …
No Stigma, No Shame: Reducing The Stigma Of Mental Illness In College Freshmen Dorms, Ashley R. Reynolds
No Stigma, No Shame: Reducing The Stigma Of Mental Illness In College Freshmen Dorms, Ashley R. Reynolds
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
With a rise in college students who report symptoms of mental illness and the high number of college students who do not seek professional help because of the stigma of mental illness, it is evident that the stigma of mental illness on college campuses needs to be addressed. A health campaign that seeks to reduce the stigma of mental illness on campus was designed, implemented, evaluated. The Model of Stigma Communication, which explains how stigma is developed and reinforced, is a sound framework for exploring the stigma of mental illness and was used to guide the campaign. First, a survey …
Argument Education In Higher Education: A Validation Study, Paul E. Mabrey Iii
Argument Education In Higher Education: A Validation Study, Paul E. Mabrey Iii
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Argument education can play an important role in higher education for leadership development and responding to increasing calls for post-secondary accountability. But to do so, argumentation teachers, scholars, and practitioners need to develop a clearer definition and research agenda for the purposes of teaching and assessing argumentation. The research conducted here contributes to this project by first establishing a definitional construct and observable behaviors associated with learning and practicing argumentation. Second, an argument education assessment instrument was created based off of the literature-supported definition of argumentation. Third, debate and argument education subject matter experts reviewed the definition, behaviors, and assessment …
Clicks, Likes, And Shares: Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Self-Efficacy, And Impression Management To Predict Digital Activism Activities, Aaron Noland
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Social media has evolved as a space for connection, advocacy, and commerce in recent years. Nonprofit organizations have been called to engage stakeholders on the Internet generally, and social media specifically as the pervasiveness of online presence has increased. In addition, nonprofit organizations have struggled to sustain engagement with the millennial population over the same time. Millennials have been termed digital natives and use social media proficiently. The convergence of these two mandates for nonprofit organizations – to engage via social media and to engage millennials – represents the importance of this study. To begin to help nonprofit organizations develop …

Playing With Others: The Community, Motivations, And Social Structures Of The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Concert Band, Sarah E. Wilson
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore motivations for participation, how social structures influence the adult non-professional members of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Concert Band (HRCB), and identify the characteristics of community present in the band. The following questions framed the investigation within an interpretative phenomenological approach:
- What motivates the band members to participate in the HRCB?
- How do the institutional social structures influence the sense of belonging, development of social capital, and socialization of band members?
- What characteristics of community are present within the HRCB?
Data was collected from long-term researcher observation and one-on-one semi-structured interviews with each participant. …

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
For more than 60 years, the sprawling Utah State Prison sat nestled at the base of the Wasatch Mountain range in Draper, Utah. The prison was home to such notorious inmates as serial killers Ted Bundy and Gary Gilmore, and serial pedophile and cult leader Warren Jeffs. Utah was the first state to reinstitute the death penalty after the Supreme Court’s moratorium ended in 1973, and the state has since executed 51 people. In 2015, the Utah legislature made the decision to relocate the prison to West Salt Lake City. In its place, Draper Mayor Troy Walker proposed to house …

Coordinated Pluralism As A Means To Facilitate Integrative Taxonomies Of Cognition, Jacqueline Anne Sullivan
Coordinated Pluralism As A Means To Facilitate Integrative Taxonomies Of Cognition, Jacqueline Anne Sullivan
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
© 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The past decade has witnessed a growing awareness of conceptual and methodological hurdles within psychology and neuroscience that must be addressed for taxonomic and explanatory progress in understanding psychological functions to be possible. In this paper, I evaluate several recent knowledge-building initiatives aimed at overcoming these obstacles. I argue that while each initiative offers important insights about how to facilitate taxonomic and explanatory progress in psychology and neuroscience, only a “coordinated pluralism” that incorporates positive aspects of each initiative will have the potential for success.

America's Best Idea? Identity Politics And Opposition To National Monuments, Christine E. Mackrell
America's Best Idea? Identity Politics And Opposition To National Monuments, Christine E. Mackrell
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This research focuses on identity as a source of opposition to national monuments. Whenever a new national monument or park is proposed, it faces almost constant opposition form local residents who often attribute their concerns to economic fears related to land use change, loss of industry, and threats to traditional practices like hunting or fishing. However, in most cases, national parks and monuments actually boost their local economies. Rather than taking an economic approach to analyzing community opposition to national monuments, this research uses identity as a lens to understand why communities continue to oppose new federal park land.

Fighting Ignorance Of The Middle East And Islam: A Case Study Of Generation Global In A Virginia Classroom, Caitriona Nam Hee Cobb
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The current research on American public education about the Middle East and Islam shows that there are serious gaps and biases in the present teachings. This is extremely harmful in light of the current political climate, Islamophobia, and the importance of foreign policy decisions made about the Middle East. Informed citizens are vital in influencing how the US will engage with the rest of the world. This thesis endeavors to explore what improvements can be made in the teaching of this field through a case study of a unique program called Generation Global in a Comparative World Religions Class in …

Joining Hands: Constructing Childhood Agency In The Context Of Ageism, Brittnay Churchill
Joining Hands: Constructing Childhood Agency In The Context Of Ageism, Brittnay Churchill
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Childhood scholars argue that children’s perspectives are systematically underestimated and silenced (James & James, 2004). Sociocultural constructions of children as fragile beings in need of protection cause youth to have few opportunities to exercise their own agency. In Change 4 Good, a youth Participatory Action Research (yPAR) program, dominant narratives regarding the capabilities of young people were challenged. The purpose of the program was to create an empowering setting where youth and adults partnered to make change, as opposed to hierarchical mentorships. The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze relationships between adults and young people within this program. …
Tertiary Degrees And The Market: Cross-Country Statistical Evidence, Boontharika Meesuwan
Tertiary Degrees And The Market: Cross-Country Statistical Evidence, Boontharika Meesuwan
Theses and Dissertations
Substantial differences in stock market behavior exists across the world. Many determinants have been explored and empirically studied, yet the exact reasons for these differences remain unclear. The purpose of this paper is to contribute some insight into the question of why market behavior differs across countries and between social groups despite continuing globalization within financial markets. I hypothesize that there is a direct relationship between personality and trading behavior that directly affects market liquidity.

The Effect Of Mixed Land Use On Residential Home Values In Montgomery County, Victoria M. Sheil
The Effect Of Mixed Land Use On Residential Home Values In Montgomery County, Victoria M. Sheil
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Mixed land use is the combination of residential and commercial type properties within the same community. In suburban areas, zoning codes maintained separate residential and commercial areas, but recently mixed land use has become more popular. This paper examines the effect of mixed land use on the surrounding residential home values using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to estimate a housing demand function. The equation is estimated using data for all residential properties in Montgomery County, Maryland assessed for value in 2016. The results indicate that mixed land use may have a negative relationship with residential home value assessments.

The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between the athletic trainer created motivational climate and rehabilitation adherence displayed by their athletes. Four certified athletic trainers from one National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I institution participated. The study implemented a convergent mixed methods design, using the Rehabilitation Adherence Measure for Athletic Training as a quantitative measure of adherence and a semi-structured interview to establish the strategies athletic trainers use to organize the rehabilitation process, provide feedback to athletes, and evaluate rehabilitation progress. The semi-structured interview also allowed for other emerging themes during analysis. Results indicated that high-adhering athletes …
The Impact Of Fertility Cues On Intrasexual Competition And Threat Perception, Grant Ostrander
The Impact Of Fertility Cues On Intrasexual Competition And Threat Perception, Grant Ostrander
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Humans are capable of detecting subtle fertility indicators that change across women’s menstrual cycle. One such indicator is the voice, which may change over the course of the menstrual cycle and provide fertility cues to listeners. Such cues provide an obvious advantage to men selecting mates, however research suggests that women can also detect these cues. Women may monitor the fertility of others to more effectively adjust their own mating strategies. By monitoring women’s skin conductance, cortisol, and testosterone responses to hearing high- and low-fertility female voices, the current study further investigated whether vocal cues of fertility may physiologically prime …
Examining The Type I Error And Power Of 18 Common Post-Hoc Comparison Tests, Derek Sauder
Examining The Type I Error And Power Of 18 Common Post-Hoc Comparison Tests, Derek Sauder
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Researchers utilizing either experimental or quasi-experimental research often want to compare group means. However, with more than two groups, comparing group means may result in an inflated Type I error rate, the probability of wrongly rejecting a null hypothesis. Researchers often employ analysis of variance (ANOVA) methodology to compare more than two group means. Post-hoc comparison procedures (PCPs) are utilized to indicate which group means differ following a significant ANOVA. SPSS provides 18 options for PCPs. The purpose of this study was to determine which PCP provides the best power while maintaining Type I error control when assumptions of ANOVA …
Inventory Of Legal Knowledge: An Examination Of Psychometric Properties In An Inpatient Psychiatric Setting, Kristen T. Campbell
Inventory Of Legal Knowledge: An Examination Of Psychometric Properties In An Inpatient Psychiatric Setting, Kristen T. Campbell
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
An estimated 60,000 forensic evaluations are conducted annually to determine if defendants meet the legal standard of competence to stand trial (CST); that is, if defendants have the ability to consult with their attorney, as well as if they have a rational and factual understanding of their charges. Estimated rates of feigning (i.e., faking or exaggerating of deficits or symptoms) in CST evaluations have ranged from 8% to 21%. Given this prevalence, it is necessary for forensic evaluators to have access to psychometrically sound instruments that can aid in the detection of feigning. Performance validity tests (PVTs) are designed to …
The Effect Of In Vivo Coaching On Therapist Behavior Management Skills, Leslie E. Brittain
The Effect Of In Vivo Coaching On Therapist Behavior Management Skills, Leslie E. Brittain
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Autism Spectrum Disorders impacts one in every 68 children, costing the United States between $11.5 billion to $60.9 billion per year. Among the multiple impairments that Autism causes, behavioral deficits are at the forefront of the disability and require intensive interventions such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) in order to manage. If a direct and intensive intervention is not put into place, problem behaviors can impact the individual both socially and academically. Behavior technicians, parents, and classroom assistants can all be trained as therapists and can provide services under supervision that provide significant gains in a client’s behavioral functioning. Therapists …
Retrospective Versus Prospective Measurement Of Examinee Motivation In Low-Stakes Testing Contexts: A Moderated Mediation Model, Aaron J. Myers
Retrospective Versus Prospective Measurement Of Examinee Motivation In Low-Stakes Testing Contexts: A Moderated Mediation Model, Aaron J. Myers
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Expectancy-value theory applied to examinee motivation suggests examinees’ perceived value of a test indirectly affects test performance via examinee effort. This empirically supported indirect effect, however, is often modeled using importance and effort scores measured after test completion, which does not align with their theoretically specified temporal order. Retrospectively measured importance and effort scores may be influenced by examinees’ test performance, impacting the estimate of the indirect effect. To investigate the effect of timing of measurement, first-year college students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions where (1) importance and effort were measured retrospectively; (2) importance was measured prospectively; …
Sleep Deprivation And Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Adult Rats, Charles M. Cowan Ii
Sleep Deprivation And Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Adult Rats, Charles M. Cowan Ii
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Alcohol is a psychoactive drug with a large userbase among adults across the globe. However, alcohol use also reduces the quality of sleep in the user. Historically, research has focused on the effects of alcohol on sleep architecture, but recent research has started to examine the effects of sleep deprivation on alcohol consumption. This research examines the effects of sleep deprivation on voluntary alcohol consumption in adult rats. Twelve Sprague Dawley rats were given ad libitum access to food, alcohol (7% solution), and water for the duration of this study. Subjects were then placed into non-moving forced exercise wheels to …
Feedback Delivery Timing & Behavior Skills Training: Training University Students To Perform Dtt, Matthew Taylor
Feedback Delivery Timing & Behavior Skills Training: Training University Students To Perform Dtt, Matthew Taylor
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Behavior Skills Training (BST) has been a common, efficient, and successful training strategy for teaching individuals to perform discrete trial teaching (DTT) although there is not much established information about the separate effects of its training components. Research on modeling and feedback alone as well as within BST, however, suggest that they may be the most significant contributors towards producing behavior change along with the regular recommendation that feedback is best delivered immediately after the occurrence of target behavior for reinforcement. Yet studies that have employed feedback before the occurrence of target behavior have observed no adverse or detrimental effects …
