Dog Therapy Day At Nwccc, Jennifer Lang Oct 2017

Dog Therapy Day At Nwccc, Jennifer Lang

Honors Projects

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) provides great beneficial opportunities for individuals within the prison population. Many research studies display the effectiveness of AAT programs in prison settings through their results. The results showed improved moods, decreased stress levels, and increased sense of self-worth. I studied this topic for about a year, and in depth for a semester. This honors project was designed to implement what I had learned from previous research studies into a local correctional facility: Northwest Community Corrections Center. I designed an intervention where residents from the correctional facility spent quality time with the dogs of the Wood County Dog …

Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Through Body Adornment, Linore Huss

Honors Projects

I conducted a series of interviews with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder survivors or their family members and completed an interactive body of work in body adornment and jewelry that reflects their stories. Last year I decided to focus on the people behind the trauma rather than the trauma itself, which I feel connects the survivor and the viewer more deeply than presenting a general image. Each piece draws from a survivor's personal story, the titles pulling from interview quotes, and the interaction with the viewer representative of each personal struggle.

Public Broadcasting Reform In The Transitional Society: The Case Of Indonesia, Masduki Masduki Oct 2017

Public Broadcasting Reform In The Transitional Society: The Case Of Indonesia, Masduki Masduki

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

The formal adoption of public service-oriented broadcasting (PSB) in countries undergoing political transition in Asia is increasing. However, this initiative is not protected by strong regulations. For instance, Indonesian PSB, which is represented by RRI (Radio of the Republicof Indonesia) and TVRI (Television of the Republic of Indonesia), remains difficult to realize. The arrival of universal ideas to establish PSB since two decades ago in the country lacks public engagement. Under a weak regulation, namely Broadcasting Law No. 32/2002, the PSB is far away from detailed preparations to serve as a truly public oriented broadcaster. This paper examines the process …

Walking While Black: Racial Bias At The Crosswalk, Kimberly Barsamian Kahn Oct 2017

Walking While Black: Racial Bias At The Crosswalk, Kimberly Barsamian Kahn

TREC Project Briefs

This project, led by Kimberly Kahn of Portland State University, explores social identity factors (race and gender) that influence drivers’ behavior in interactions with pedestrians at crosswalks. One dangerous potential point of conflict for pedestrians within the transportation system is interactions with drivers at crosswalks. In 2010, there was one crash-related pedestrian death every two hours and an injury every eight minutes, and racial minorities are disproportionately represented in these pedestrian fatalities. In light of this disparity, this project examines whether racial discrimination occurs at crosswalks, which may lead to disparate crossing experiences and disproportionate safety outcomes.

TREC Final Reports

This project explores social identity factors (race and gender) that influence drivers’ behavior in interactions with pedestrians at crosswalks. One dangerous potential point of conflict for pedestrians within the transportation system is interactions with drivers at crosswalks (NHTSA, 2009). In 2010, there was one crash-related pedestrian death every two hours and an injury every eight minutes, and racial minorities are disproportionately represented in these pedestrian fatalities (CDC, 2013). In light of this disparity, this project examines whether racial discrimination occurs at crosswalks, which may lead to disparate crossing experiences and disproportionate safety outcomes. Does Compact Development Increase Or Reduce Traffic Congestion?, Reid Ewing, Guang Tian, Torrey Lyons Oct 2017

Does Compact Development Increase Or Reduce Traffic Congestion?, Reid Ewing, Guang Tian, Torrey Lyons

TREC Final Reports

From years of research, we know that compact development that is dense, diverse, well-designed, etc. produces fewer vehicle miles traveled (VMT) than sprawling development. But compact development also concentrates origins and destinations. No one has yet determined, using credible urban form metrics and credible congestion data, the net effect of these countervailing forces on area-wide congestion. Using compactness/sprawl metrics developed for the National Institutes of Health, and congestion data from the Texas Transportation Institute’s (TTI’s) Urban Mobility Scorecard Annual Report database, this study seeks to determine which opposing point of view of sprawl and congestion is correct. It does so …

From Fear To Fruition: Developing Student Research Day Videos, Brian Mcdonald, Gisela Butera, Alexandra Gomes

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

The George Washington University (GW) has held annual Research Days highlighting research done by students and residents. During spring 2017, GW’s Himmelfarb Library proposed a video series capturing students’ research experience and participating in GW’s Research Days.

The primary goal of the video series was to promote GW research achievements on both a school and individual level. The short video interviews provided participants with a new method to share their work, discuss their experiences and highlight the research conducted at their school.

Create And Teach An Elective? Me? Overcoming Fear Of New Roles, Alexandra Gomes, Laura Abate, Thomas Harrod

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

: Inquiries about new informatics instructional opportunities in the curriculum led to a suggestion that the librarians submit an elective proposal. Despite knowing nothing about the approval process or the responsibilities of being a course director, several librarians accepted the challenge as a learning experience. Developing the proposal included writing the proposal, formally presenting it to two curriculum committees for approval, and then creating the specific lesson plans, identifying associated readings, creating a grading rubric and syllabus, and teaching the specific elective sessions. Librarians developed the elective Introduction to Systematic Reviews and are in the process of developing a second …

Seismic Waves, Aubrey L. Kamppila

I was studying abroad in Florence, Italy on November 9, 2016, when I awoke to the news that Donald Trump had been elected President. To say it was a shock was an understatement, like many Americans, I had never dreamed the scenario possible. At that moment, I felt more powerless and disconnected from my country than ever before. For the next few weeks, I struggled to comprehend how I personally could combat the assault on my political views and values, what stand I could take, and what impact it might have. Finally, on one of many emotional phone calls with …

Psychosocial Functioning And The Cortisol Awakening Response: Meta-Analysis, P-Curve Analysis, And Evaluation Of The Evidential Value In Existing Studies, Ian Andres Boggero, Camelia E. Hostinar, Eric A. Haak, Michael L. M. Murphy, Suzanne C. Segerstrom Oct 2017

Psychosocial Functioning And The Cortisol Awakening Response: Meta-Analysis, P-Curve Analysis, And Evaluation Of The Evidential Value In Existing Studies, Ian Andres Boggero, Camelia E. Hostinar, Eric A. Haak, Michael L. M. Murphy, Suzanne C. Segerstrom

Psychology Faculty Publications

Cortisol levels rise immediately after awakening and peak approximately 30-45 minutes thereafter. Psychosocial functioning influences this cortisol awakening response (CAR), but there is considerable heterogeneity in the literature. The current study used p-curve and metaanalysis on 709 findings from 212 studies to test the evidential value and estimate effect sizes of four sets of findings: those associating worse psychosocial functioning with higher or lower cortisol increase relative to the waking period (CARi) and to the output of the waking period (AUCw). All four sets of findings demonstrated evidential value. Psychosocial predictors explained 1%-3.6% of variance in CARi and AUCw …

High Trait Shame Undermines The Protective Effects Of Prevalence Knowledge On State Shame Following Hpv/Cin Diagnosis In Women, Sarah Mcqueary Flynn, Tory A. Eisenlohr-Moul, Suzanne C. Segerstrom, Christen T. Logue, Jamie L. Studts Oct 2017

High Trait Shame Undermines The Protective Effects Of Prevalence Knowledge On State Shame Following Hpv/Cin Diagnosis In Women, Sarah Mcqueary Flynn, Tory A. Eisenlohr-Moul, Suzanne C. Segerstrom, Christen T. Logue, Jamie L. Studts

Psychology Faculty Publications

Human papillomavirus (HPV), and the related, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), are common yet poorly understood physical conditions. The diagnosis of HPV often elicits shame and guilt, which in turn may undermine psychological and physical health. The current study compared shame and guilt responses to diagnosis among two groups: women diagnosed with HPV/CIN and women diagnosed with Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV/IM). Eighty women recently diagnosed with HPV/CIN or EBV/IM completed measures of shame- and guilt-proneness, shame and guilt following diagnosis, and disease knowledge including prevalence estimates (HPV and EBV, respectively). HPV/CIN (vs. EBV/IM) predicted more diagnosis-related shame and guilt. Estimates of high …

Black Lives Matter: The Movement’S Relevance And Comparison To The 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Stacy Jenkins-Robinson Oct 2017

Black Lives Matter: The Movement’S Relevance And Comparison To The 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Stacy Jenkins-Robinson

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

The Black Lives Matter movement originated on social media after recent events that took place relating to the murders of unarmed Black men by civilian vigilantes or White policemen. This study examines the relevancy of the Black Lives Matter movement, while comparing it to the 1960s Civil Rights movement, specifically, concerning the differences in readily identifiable leadership. A Likert-scale survey was created to collect data from Old Dominion University students and affiliates who attended the event and students who were enrolled during the Spring 2016 semester, and distributed through the online survey platform Qualtrics.

Analysis of the survey responses showed …

A Social-Ecological Framework Of Theory, Assessment, And Prevention Of Suicide, Robert J. Cramer, Nester D, Kapusta Oct 2017

A Social-Ecological Framework Of Theory, Assessment, And Prevention Of Suicide, Robert J. Cramer, Nester D, Kapusta

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

The juxtaposition of increasing suicide rates with continued calls for suicide prevention efforts begs for new approaches. Grounded in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) framework for tackling health issues, this personal views work integrates relevant suicide risk/protective factor, assessment, and intervention/prevention literatures. Based on these components of suicide risk, we articulate a Social-Ecological Suicide Prevention Model (SESPM) which provides an integration of general and population-specific risk and protective factors. We also use this multi-level perspective to provide a structured approach to understanding current theories and intervention/prevention efforts concerning suicide. Following similar multi-level prevention efforts in interpersonal violence …

Devouring White Feminist Ideologies: Policing Of Latina Bodies Through A Transnational Perspective., Jocelyn Gómez Oct 2017

Devouring White Feminist Ideologies: Policing Of Latina Bodies Through A Transnational Perspective., Jocelyn Gómez

Research and Development Supported by El Centro

Spanish-language media productions in the United States has increasingly taken into consideration the growing and diverse population it caters to. Latin American audiences in the United States, are continuously growing and the Spanish-language media, such as Telemundo, has reformed their production to cater their diverse audiences. Within these productions, there is a danger of hegemonic ideologies being embedded to maintain social inequalities in the United States and throughout Latin America. In this analysis, I will interrogate the feminist ideologies that have expanded and influenced feminism abroad. Are white, middle class, feminist ideology being penetrated in the bodies of Latinas in …

An Examination Of Sms-Related Nonresponse Bias, Matthew Hastings Oct 2017

An Examination Of Sms-Related Nonresponse Bias, Matthew Hastings

Survey Research and Methodology Program: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

With the proliferation of mobile information and communications technologies, researchers face new opportunities for data collection and challenges to data quality. Short message service (SMS) or “text messaging” is a flexible mobile data service that can be incorporated into survey designs in a variety of ways. Given the many uses of SMS, I provide a framework for the use of SMS in the survey process which outlines the temporal location of three types of SMS-related nonresponse: SMS nonconsent, SMS nondelivery, and SMS noncooperation.

To better understand when SMS-related nonresponse might pose a risk of producing bias in survey estimates, I …
