Like an elephant, while it may be difficult to describe, corruption is generally not difficult to recognize when observed (Tanzi, 1998, p. 564). Many countries have been, or are currently typified by both lethal conflict and massive corruption. Historically, post-conflict development programs have imposed policies of zero corruption, yet they routinely fail. The study of conflict resolution has ballooned in the last few decades, but the literature remains sparse regarding leaders’ perspectives of navigating conflict. Currently, researchers have not addressed the conflict experiences of Jamaican church leaders residing in South Florida. Using phenomenology and social construction theory, I explored the lived experiences of this population as they addressed conflict. Twenty-two church leaders from Rhema Word Ministries International and affiliated organizations answered interview questions for an average of 45 to 60 minutes each. This thesis attempts to provide a more sufficient understanding of post-reform China’s position in global political economic space than the understandings and conceptions that currently exist in geography and the broader critical social sciences and humanities. This thesis argues that post-reform China is best understood through the global class war framework. The global class war does not conceive post-reform China as “imperialist,” “neoliberal,” or even “capitalist.” Instead the framework understands post-reform China as a social formation that is simply attempting to arise within a global political economic system that is dominated by the global imperialist class camp. The United Kingdom Miners’ Strike began on 6 March 1984 as a response to the closure of five pits without adequate review, as well as Margaret Thatcher’s unwillingness to reach any compromise. The almost year long strike ended without victory and is known as one of the bitterest industrial disputes in UK history. Thatcher’s motives for closing the pits were to grow the economy by importing coal, oil, and gas, as well as cut back on inefficient pits within the United Kingdom. National assessments have shown that a significant number of students are writing at a level below proficiency (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012; Persky, Daane, & Jin, 2003). The primary purpose of this study was to increase our understanding of the role of writing self-efficacy in relation to elementary-aged students’ writing fluency outcomes when they are receiving a performance feedback intervention. The study used secondary data collected from two larger studies, resulting in a final sample of 138 third-grade students from two cohorts. Background: Childhood ADHD is an impairing neurodevelopmental disorder with associated long-term negative outcomes in a variety of domains. Despite this, there is a significant delay to treatment and a low rate of lifetime treatment contact for individuals with ADHD. Barriers to child treatment include parental poor symptom recognition, attitudinal barriers, evaluative barriers, fear of stigma, and structural barriers. This study focuses on the representation of “leftover women” in a Chinese television drama. “Leftover women” is a Chinese expression referring to unmarried women over 30 who have high education and income levels. Through a textual analysis of the “leftover women” images in the television drama We Get Married, this study explores how the femininity of “leftover women” is constructed and how these images reinforce or/and challenge hegemonic notions of femininity.

This thesis is interested in the ways that documentary photojournalism of economic hardship has changed in response to a neoliberal context. Analysis is centered on photographer Anthony Suau’s photo essay “Struggling Cleveland,” captured for TIME magazine in 2008. Suau’s photographs of economic hardship break from a tradition of photojournalism that focused on drama and emotion. I consider what appears and does not appear in the photographs, with particular attention to how the neoliberal context influences the content and mode of address of the photos. To date, there is a great deal of research supporting the correlation between experiences of shame and struggles with clinical anger. What has received less attention is the nature of this relationship. The current study sought to explore the nature of shame’s correlation to clinical anger by analyzing fears of compassion—the reluctance or inability to experience compassion for others, to accept compassion from others, and fear of directing compassion to the self. Several error correction models are estimated for analyzing the nominal exchange rate dynamics of Bangladesh between the taka and the United States dollar using annual data. The theoretical frameworks utilized include balance of payments and the monetary construct. The bilateral taka / dollar exchange rate model based on the balance of payments approach exhibits better econometric and statistical traits than the model based on the monetary construct. Out-of-sample simulation indicates, however, that the balance of payments ARDL model does not generate very accurate forecasts for this bilateral exchange rate.
