Cops And Cells : Theorizing And Assessing The Implications Of Smartphone Surveillance For Policing, Sean Patrick Roche Jan 2017

Cops And Cells : Theorizing And Assessing The Implications Of Smartphone Surveillance For Policing, Sean Patrick Roche

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the United States, police officers are empowered to use force, and are often people’s first point of contact with the criminal justice system. Significantly, in the last decade, the majority of American citizens have acquired smartphone technology, which allows them to document and broadcast police behavior on a scale never before seen. Several high-profile police use of force incidents have been captured on video, and the resulting public outcries suggest that this technology now presents exceptional challenges to the maintenance of police legitimacy. Foucault (1977) argues that power in modern society is achieved by surveillance systems that work to …

Three Essays On Electricity Pricing, Congestion, And Market Efficiency, Yu Zou Jan 2017

Three Essays On Electricity Pricing, Congestion, And Market Efficiency, Yu Zou

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the first chapter, I analyze the price variations among zones in the electricity forward market of New York State, and how electricity forward prices react to the economic risks in the market. It applies a VAR model with monthly/holiday dummies and weather data to forecast the three components of electricity prices--energy price, marginal cost of congestion and losses. The GARCH estimates of the conditional variance of the VAR residuals are treated as risks. We find that participants will bid higher price in the forward market when they expect higher risks. Particularly, the risk of congestion has a larger effect …

Understanding Trait-Turnover Relationships : An Examination Of The Utility Of Holland's Congruence Theory And The Riasec Typology, Sarah Rebecca Strahan Jan 2017

Understanding Trait-Turnover Relationships : An Examination Of The Utility Of Holland's Congruence Theory And The Riasec Typology, Sarah Rebecca Strahan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The goal of the current study is to improve our understanding of the relationship between personality and employee turnover. Research is reviewed to demonstrate that after decades of research we still know very little about the role of personality in turnover. As a result, many researchers have called for new approaches to improve our understanding of the relationship between personality and turnover (Griffeth, Hom, & Gaertner, 2000; Hom & Griffeth, 1995; Russell, 2013). One approach that has received little attention is examining whether job context matters –that is, do the traits that predict employee turnover depend on the particular job. …

Determination And Analysis Of Dscovr-Eipc Satellite-Retrieved Radiance From Cloud Geometric And Optical Properties, Emily Christine Morgan Jan 2017

Determination And Analysis Of Dscovr-Eipc Satellite-Retrieved Radiance From Cloud Geometric And Optical Properties, Emily Christine Morgan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Using simulations and numerical fitting, this work sought to describe the satellite-retrieved radiance of clouds as a function of their thermodynamic and optical properties. Subsequently, this understanding can then be used in a look-up-table to determine the properties of clouds imaged by the EPIC sensor in the NASA DSCOVR satellite. In this study, background oxygen absorption was modeled in a radiative transfer model and convolved with EPIC filter functions for two absorption-reference pairs for Oxygen A- and B-band. This absorption profile was established as the primary vertical coordinate in this study, leveraging the similarity principle to allow for intercomparison of …

Does What You Think You Feel, Impact What You Actually Eat? : An Examination Of Alexithymia, Interoceptive Awareness, And Loss Of Control Eating In Young Women, Lisa Marie Anderson Jan 2017

Does What You Think You Feel, Impact What You Actually Eat? : An Examination Of Alexithymia, Interoceptive Awareness, And Loss Of Control Eating In Young Women, Lisa Marie Anderson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Affect regulation theories posit that loss of control (LOC) and binge eating are maintained via an emotion regulation process, through which eating relieves negative affect and aversive mood states. LOC has been identified as a key binge eating characteristic associated with psychopathology and poor psychological outcomes. As such, maladaptive emotion regulation has been identified as a central risk factor for binge eating, as theories posit that individuals binge eat in response to negative mood states. However, empirical studies testing the link between induced negative mood and subsequent food intake in people with LOC and binge eating have yielded inconsistent findings. …

Child Abuse In The Archaeological Context, Nicole Marie Popielarz Jan 2017

Child Abuse In The Archaeological Context, Nicole Marie Popielarz

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Children have been a widely ignored subject in archaeology so it follows that child abuse has not been studied in detail in the archaeological context. This paper combines both forensic anthropology studies and Bioarchaeological studies to see if child abuse is a modern phenomenon. Signs of both non-accidental trauma and neglect have been documented by authors in the archaeological record. The purpose of this paper will be to describe signs of both nonaccidental trauma and neglect. Then examples in archaeological studies will be reviewed. The future of the study of abuse in the archaeological context is also discussed at some …

Eating Pathology In Sexual Minority Men : Evaluating An Objectification Theory Framework And The Role Of Identity Acceptance Concerns, Joseph Michael Donahue Jan 2017

Eating Pathology In Sexual Minority Men : Evaluating An Objectification Theory Framework And The Role Of Identity Acceptance Concerns, Joseph Michael Donahue

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Research supports objectification theory as providing a framework for understanding how eating disturbances can develop in females. However, research among men—specifically sexual minority men who are disproportionally affected by such issues—is deficient. The current study sought to further assess whether the relations hypothesized by objectification theory were significant among sexual minority males. In addition, the current study explored the role of sexual orientation acceptance concerns as a moderating variable. To evaluate the current study’s aims, sexual minority males (N=208) were recruited online and asked to complete self-report measurements related to the objectification theory, eating pathology, and sexual orientation identity. Results …

Redefining Murder : A Qualitative Exploration Of Emotion And Identity Following Loss Of A Loved One To Homicide, Kristen Lee Hourigan Jan 2017

Redefining Murder : A Qualitative Exploration Of Emotion And Identity Following Loss Of A Loved One To Homicide, Kristen Lee Hourigan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation research project is a qualitative exploration of emotion and identity following loss of a loved one to homicide. It answers the questions, “How do individuals who have lost loved ones to homicide understand and experience forgiveness, and how does this vary by social distance from the offender and social position (race, gender, social class, age, religion, and education)?” and “How do forgiveness processes relate to identity?” It uses a symbolic interactionist framework and draws upon several diverse literatures including identity theory and affect control theory in sociology, research on forgiveness and empathy in psychology, and concepts from restorative …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The dictionary is the core reference object of a language. It is used to learn and understand the lexicon of languages. Speakers acquire and develop knowledge of the language through its lexicon. Ewe speakers are not an exception. Ewe dictionaries are their main reference works and it emerges from our research that more than a dozen dictionaries have been produced in Ewe. However, many of them have not survived and exist only in bibliographical references. Many others are quite rare. In general, Ewe dictionaries are difficult for the public to acquire or access.

Targeting The "Absence" In A Desistance Framework : Balancing Risk And Rehabilitation In Mandated Criminal Background Check Employment Decisions, Megan Denver Jan 2017

Targeting The "Absence" In A Desistance Framework : Balancing Risk And Rehabilitation In Mandated Criminal Background Check Employment Decisions, Megan Denver

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Recent research efforts have documented resistance from employers in hiring individuals with criminal records. In response, advocates and policymakers have implemented strategies ranging from grassroots movements that delay criminal record inquiries to federal guidance that directs decision makers to conduct “individualized assessments.” However, it is not clear precisely what information employers actually are (or should be) seeking when they conduct criminal background checks. Furthermore, there may be a catch-22: while employment might promote desistance, applicants may need to demonstrate that they do not pose an undue risk before being able to secure a job or license (Maruna 2009). Since desistance …

Supervisee Nondisclosure : Is It Predicted By The Supervisory Working Alliance, Collaborative Supervision, And Relational Behavior?, Andrew Scott Gibson Jan 2017

Supervisee Nondisclosure : Is It Predicted By The Supervisory Working Alliance, Collaborative Supervision, And Relational Behavior?, Andrew Scott Gibson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The effectiveness of clinical supervision depends in part on psychotherapy supervisees’ disclosures of clinically relevant information to their supervisors. Unfortunately, however, previous research indicated that supervisees tend to withhold important information related to their clients’ progress and their reactions to the supervisor. Factors associated with the occurrence of supervisee nondisclosure (SND) are not well established, and past research has yielded varying outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inverse relation of three variables to SND: the supervisory working alliance (SWA; Bordin, 1983), collaborative supervision (CS; Rousmaniere & Ellis, 2013), and relational behaviors in supervision (RB; Shaffer & …

Female Athlete Body Project Intervention With Professional Ballet Dancers, Sasha Gorrell Jan 2017

Female Athlete Body Project Intervention With Professional Ballet Dancers, Sasha Gorrell

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Professional dancers have increased vulnerability for eating disorders (EDs), with three times higher risk than non-dancers. Among ballet dancers, generalized risk for EDs associated with internalization of female beauty ideals (i.e., the thin-ideal) in western culture is compounded by idealization of a ballet-specific body ideal, a combination that confers unique vulnerability for eating pathology. Empirical support has been established for a healthy weight intervention (HWI) that promotes body acceptance and reducing eating pathology; the current study adapted a HWI specifically tailored to female athletes for implementation among professional ballet dancers. Participants from two elite ballet companies were randomized to a …

Protection And Empowerment For Indonesian Female Migrant Domestic Workers, Rosita Tandos Jan 2017

Protection And Empowerment For Indonesian Female Migrant Domestic Workers, Rosita Tandos

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study explores the issue of transnational domestic work. There are three main points discussed: first, factors influencing the women’s decisions to work overseas; second, six stages of transnational domestic work including the recruitment process, training program, placement and signing the employment contract, working overseas, finishing the contract, and travelling back home); third, the women’s perspectives on solutions to the problems. Using a human capabilities approach, empowerment and feminist theoretical frameworks, the study examined whether being a migrant female domestic worker contributes positively to a woman’s and her family’s life.

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Since the Great Recession, employment and training (E&T) programs are of growing interest given the labor market policy response to high and long-term patterns of unemployment. For low-income workers with low educational attainment and limited job skills, E&T programs are expected to play a vital role in improving their employability and enhancing long-term economic security.

Explaining Presenteeism Through Social Exchange And Expectancy Theories, Christopher Russo Jan 2017

Explaining Presenteeism Through Social Exchange And Expectancy Theories, Christopher Russo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A growing interest in presenteeism, attending work despite being ill, has led to an increase in research on the construct across various disciplines. The objective of this research was to provide a cohesive definition from prior literature, measure presenteeism in a novel manner, and identify potential casual explanations to expand the presenteeism literature within Industrial-Organizational Psychology. In this study, presenteeism was operationalized as, “attending work and putting forth effort at work while ill,” and was measured using behavioral intentions (the intent to presentee). Potential motivation for presenteeism behavior was modeled using social exchange theory, organizational support theory (perceived organizational support), …

Factors Associated With Successful Completion Of A Transitional Living Program For Homeless And Former Foster Youth, Megan Brophy-Mclean Jan 2017

Factors Associated With Successful Completion Of A Transitional Living Program For Homeless And Former Foster Youth, Megan Brophy-Mclean

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Transitional and Independent Living programs exist to help prepare homeless, at-risk and foster youth to live independently in the community as adults at an age earlier than expected from more privileged youth. The challenges they face often result in poor outcomes such as ongoing homelessness, substance abuse problems, low levels of education, and high levels of unemployment. Because the stakes are so high for these youth, it is imperative that the programs designed to help them are able to meet their needs by having them remain in the program until they are competent to live independently. This study attempts to …

Mediating And Moderating Factors Of The Relationship Between Sexual Orientation And Eating Pathology And Body Satisfaction In Sexual Minority And Heterosexual Men, Andrea Denae Murray Jan 2017

Mediating And Moderating Factors Of The Relationship Between Sexual Orientation And Eating Pathology And Body Satisfaction In Sexual Minority And Heterosexual Men, Andrea Denae Murray

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Most research on body image and disordered eating has focused largely on women, as women are at higher risk than men for eating disorders. In recent years research has revealed that men are at increasing risk for these outcomes, especially as the ideal male body represented in media images and therefore frequently internalized among men is becoming so lean and muscular as to make it very difficult for most men to realistically achieve. Sexual minority men in particular have been found to be at increased risk for body dissatisfaction, body shame, and disordered eating than their heterosexual counterparts. The research …

A "Default Option" While Online Grocery Shopping To Enhance Nutrition Within A Food Insecure Population, Jaime Ashley Coffino Jan 2017

A "Default Option" While Online Grocery Shopping To Enhance Nutrition Within A Food Insecure Population, Jaime Ashley Coffino

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There is a need for sustainable interventions that improve diet-related health within the food insecure community. We examined if use of a “default” prefilled online grocery shopping cart, compared to nutrition education, would result in the purchase of healthier food items. Fifty participants (M age = 46.4 ± 12.46 years; M body mass index = 28.59 ± 6.48 kg/m2; 74.0% male) were randomized to: (1) read a brochure containing nutrition information (n = 23) or (2) be presented with a “default” prefilled online shopping cart containing groceries that meet nutritional guidelines to which they could freely make changes before completing …

Subjective Experiences Of Marijuana Edibles : Documenting Discomfort, Stacey L. Farmer Jan 2017

Subjective Experiences Of Marijuana Edibles : Documenting Discomfort, Stacey L. Farmer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Background: Marijuana remains the most frequently used illicit drug in the United States. As its legal status has changed in recent years, more people have turned to oral administration (edibles). These “edibles” show considerable range from straightforward pills (i.e. Dronabinol) to gourmet concoctions such as cookies, candies and cakes. The current study focused on an individual’s uncomfortable experience with marijuana edibles, highlighting the relations with dosage, other drug use, aversiveness, and medical and non-medical outcomes.

Queer Youth Activism : Generational Change In The Us Lgbtq Movement, Megan K. Murphy Jan 2017

Queer Youth Activism : Generational Change In The Us Lgbtq Movement, Megan K. Murphy

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The past several decades have witnessed rapid social and cultural change around LGBTQ individuals and sexual politics in the United States. As a result, LGBTQ youth are coming of age in a socio-historical context characterized by increasing normalization and visibility of LGBTQ people and less overt homophobia where LGBTQ individuals live their lives largely beyond the closet. In this dissertation, the unique characteristics of this post-closet movement generation are explored. I identify three core tensions faced by the post-closet generation: navigating restrictive at risk/victim frames, negotiating identities in the context of growing ambivalence about traditional gay/lesbian categories, and carving out …

Evolution Of Lemur Pelage Color Variation, Amanda Nicole Spriggs Jan 2017

Evolution Of Lemur Pelage Color Variation, Amanda Nicole Spriggs

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation investigates the selective pressures that may be driving variation in pelage color patterns in Eulemur, Varecia, and Propithecus. This is addressed by exploring the relationship between the lemur pelage colors and ecological variables, such as habitat type, predation pressures, visibility variables, and level of sympatry. The following model is presented here to describe the evolutionary mechanisms that are thought to be maintaining pelage coloration in lemurs: Pelage color and pattern are potentially used to (1) signal to conspecifics information such as mate quality, (2) signal to congenerics species identity, and (3) avoid signaling the individual’s presence to predators. …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study addresses gaps in the theoretical and policy literature by examining the relationship between associate degree program credit requirements and four student outcomes: associate degree attainment, time to degree, final associate degree grade point average, and persistence. Using student unit record data, a longitudinal quantitative study of a cohort of community college students was conducted for the observational period of fall semester 2011 through winter semester 2016, in order to determine if community college students enrolled in academic programs with higher minimum credit requirements have different outcomes than students in programs with lower minimum credit requirements.

The Effects Of Increasing Object Pronoun Input Frequency On The Aural Comprehension Of 3rd Person Object Pronouns Among Second Semester Classroom Learners Of French, Olivia Barone Jan 2017

The Effects Of Increasing Object Pronoun Input Frequency On The Aural Comprehension Of 3rd Person Object Pronouns Among Second Semester Classroom Learners Of French, Olivia Barone

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This semester-long study was designed to benefit developing Second Language Acquisition (SLA) instructional methods, specifically honing French language instruction, creating a foundation on which to explore the connection between input frequency during instruction and aural comprehension of difficultly acquired forms. Concurrently, five current French textbooks commonly used in universities across the United States are evaluated for object pronoun exposure. This evaluation uncovers a trend of avoidance of third person object pronoun forms prior to their being taught explicitly, and a general paucity of naturally occurring object pronouns in French language instruction textbooks. These instances of avoidance strategies lower the frequency …
