LOS ANGELES LOVES A WINNER

In 2017, LA bleeds Dodger Blue. Although some might make a strong case that Los Angeles has been a blue city for decades, this is the first year of the LA Public Opinion Survey that Angelenos’ preference for the Dodgers has overtaken their love for the Lakers. For four years, StudyLA has asked Angelenos which professional team is their favorite out of those with “LA” in their name. For three straight years, the Lakers have come out on top. However, that percentage has dropped steadily as their inability to make the playoffs has taken a …

THE LOS ANGELES RIOTS SURVEYS

The 1992 LA Riots had a profound impact on nearly every aspect of Los Angeles, including government policy, community relations, quality of life, and demographics. Many wondered how these Riots would affect future quality of life, and believed race relations in LA could no longer be ignored. In observance of each of the 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 year anniversaries of the LA Riots, StudyLA sponsored cross-sectional phone surveys of Angelenos to study their attitudes toward Los Angeles in a longitudinal effort to learn more about the Riots’ impact. A total of 5,455 Angelenos …

MAJORITY OF L.A. COUNTY RESIDENTS AGREE WITH BLACK LIVES MATTER, LMU SURVEY FINDS

Two-thirds (67%) of Los Angeles County residents agree with the Black Lives Matter movement, according to a survey conducted by Loyola Marymount University’s Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles. “In Los Angeles, even wedge issues become non-controversial,” said Fernando Guerra, director and professor of political science and Chicana/o studies at LMU. “Such a high level of support for the nationally controversial issue is astounding even for liberal LA.” The question was part of a public opinion poll administered by StudyLA in January …

Moral Disengagement In Legal Judgments, Tess M. S. Neal, Robert J. Cramer Jan 2017

Moral Disengagement In Legal Judgments, Tess M. S. Neal, Robert J. Cramer

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

We investigated the role of moral disengagement in a legally-relevant judgment in this theoretically-driven empirical analysis. Moral disengagement is a social-cognitive phenomenon through which people reason their way toward harming others, presenting a useful framework for investigating legal judgments that often result in harming individuals for the good of society. We tested the role of moral disengagement in forensic psychologists' willingness to conduct the most ethically questionable clinical task in the criminal justice system: competence for execution evaluations. Our hypothesis that moral disengagement would function as mediator of participants' existing attitudes and their judgmentsa theoretical bridge between attitudes and judgmentswas …

Editorial, Jane L. Ireland, Robert J. Cramer

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

We commence this edition with an invited paper by David DeMatteo, Suraji Wagage, and Jaymes Fairfax-Columbo on cyberstalking. Their paper considers the role of law and public opinion in this rapidly evolving area of study. One of the most interesting findings represents the difference between public opinion and the legal concept of cyberstalking; public opinion does not support the (legal) suggestion that cyberstalking should be considered alongside more general stalking. This reflects a move in the literature more generally that considers cybercrime distinct in many ways from contact offending. Indeed, it parallels considerably with the cyberbullying literature, which some would …

Sex Offender Registry Acts: Deterrence Or Moral Panic?, Daniel J. Wood Jan 2017

Sex Offender Registry Acts: Deterrence Or Moral Panic?, Daniel J. Wood

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Sex offender registries were created as a means for law enforcement to track rapists and pedophiles to help quickly resolve sex cases. It evolved into a much larger system with many consequences. This evolution has been hastened by a moral panic based on bad facts and fueled by strong public opinion in favor of long prison sentences and even longer registration periods. Modern laws have little to do with monitoring and more to do with retribution. Proponents claim these penalties are a means to deter sex offenses, but very little research supports this contention. Instead, the registries and the media …

Demining Programme Office In The Falkland Islands - Exploitation 2017, Fenix -. Insight Ldt. Jan 2017

Demining Programme Office In The Falkland Islands - Exploitation 2017, Fenix -. Insight Ldt.

Global CWD Repository

In January 2017, exploitation work was carried out by Fenix Insight Ltd on mines and other ordnance recovered by the Land Release Contractor (LRC).

Examination of grenades used in booby traps revealed that one, considered to be complex and dangerous, had been rendered safe by the ageing process. The other, though more familiar, was still fully functional and highly lethal. The findings highlight the continued danger from unexploded ordnance, and the need for threat assessment to be based on technical evidence rather than intuition.

Victim Assistance In Cambodia The Human Face Of Survivors And Their Needs For Assistance, Hi Jan 2017

Victim Assistance In Cambodia The Human Face Of Survivors And Their Needs For Assistance, Hi

Global CWD Repository

The initial intention of the research was to bring the lives of victims/survivors of landmines to the forefront. After discussions and some desk study, the research focus still remained on the lives of the victims and elaborated towards positioning these victims within the conditions that surround them. The Kingdom of Cambodia served as an ideal case study because of the heightened impact to lives of people in the country as a result of extensive of presence of landmines. Furthermore, the country’s confirmation as a host for the upcoming 11th State Party meeting on MBT provided an important moment to launch …

Apopo Annual Report 2017, Apopo

Global CWD Repository

APOPO is a global nonprofit organization that researches, develops, and implements scent-detection technology to combat global humanitarian issues. APOPO’s detection rats currently detect landmines or tuberculosis in 5 affected countries around the world.

The rats are trained through clicker/reward methods, receiving tasty food treats when they identify explosives or tuberculosis. They are never harmed, because they are too light to actually set off any landmines and are cared for under strict animal welfare guidelines.

APOPO has mine action programmes in Angola, Cambodia, and Mozambique and is preparing operations in Zimbabwe and Colombia. APOPO also detects tuberculosis in Tanzania and Mozambique, …

The Effects Of Rape Myth Acceptance, Benevolent Sexism, Characterological Self-Blame, And Behavioral Self-Blame On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity, Jacob Whitaker Camp Jan 2017

The Effects Of Rape Myth Acceptance, Benevolent Sexism, Characterological Self-Blame, And Behavioral Self-Blame On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity, Jacob Whitaker Camp

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Roughly 35 to 50 percent of victims of sexual assault begin to suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relatively early after the assault (Elklit, Due, & Christiansen, 2009). Many victims of sexual assault who are diagnosed with PTSD continue to experience symptoms long after the incident occurred (Peter-Hagene & Ullman, 2015). Rape has serious effects on the psychological health of the victims. Although no study had been done directly examining the relationship between rape myth acceptance and PTSD symptom severity, studies have shown that benevolent sexism affects rape myth acceptance and that rape myth acceptance affects how individuals attribute blame …

The Relationship Between The Gray Oral Reading Test, Fifth Edition (Gort-5) And Woodcock Johnson Test Of Achievement, Fourth Edition (Wj Iv Ach) For Referred Children, Megan Edwards

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Most children will learn to read when provided early literacy opportunities and reading instruction in early elementary school. However, approximately 20 percent of children will struggle to read and necessitate supplemental reading intervention. A smaller subset of struggling readers, moreover, will require sustained, intensive reading intervention, as well as accommodations provided through special education. Although universal screeners and progress monitoring instruments can be useful in guiding instructional strategies and gauging a student’s response to an evidenced-based reading intervention, norm-referenced screening tools can additionally be beneficial in identifying struggling readers who likely have specific learning disabilities. The purpose of the present …

Specialist Communities In China’S Aerospace Technology And Innovation System: The Cultural Dimension, Alanna Krolikowski Jan 2017

Specialist Communities In China’S Aerospace Technology And Innovation System: The Cultural Dimension, Alanna Krolikowski

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Only two decades ago, China was a marginal player in the global aerospace industry. Today, the pace of China’s space programs is unparalleled and it has joined the sector’s leading ranks. China is the only country after the Soviet Union/Russia and the United States to independently send humans into orbit and a rover to touch down on the Moon. A Chinese station will likely soon be only the only long-term human habitat circling the Earth alongside the International Space Station. Within a decade, China could become only the second country in history to land a person on the Moon’s surface. …

Distribution, Diversity, And Den Locations Of Canidae And Hyaenidae Species Across Habitat Type At Enashiva Nature Refuge, Grace Bullington

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Due to the importance of top-trophic level predators have on their environment including regulating prey species and influencing ecosystem biodiversity, it is important to monitor top-trophic level predators to understand how they shape their ecosystem. While top-trophic level predators can benefit the ecosystem, they can also cause problems for surrounding human settlements like predation on livestock. Species in the Canidae and Hyaenidae families occupy the top-trophic level and can influence their ecosystem and cause human-wildlife conflict.

This study looked at the distribution, diversity, and den locations of Canidae and Hyaenidae species at Enashiva Nature Refuge over the course of 21 …

A Conversation Analysis Of Therapist-Client Interactional Patterns In Single Session Therapy: A Researcher's Interpretation, Nozomu Ozaki Jan 2017

A Conversation Analysis Of Therapist-Client Interactional Patterns In Single Session Therapy: A Researcher's Interpretation, Nozomu Ozaki

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

In response to the growing awareness of the issue of accessibility to mental health services (World Health Organization, 2013), single session therapy (SST) has been implemented in various settings throughout the world. (Hoyt &Talmon, 2014b; Miller, 2008; Miller & Slive, 2004; Talmon, 2014). Although there has been much advancement in the knowledge and application of SST, an understanding of therapist-client interactional patterns that enfold in SST is extremely scarce. In this study, I investigated how therapists collaboratively improved the talk in SST turn by turn in such a way that promoted therapeutic improvement. I utilized conversation analysis (Sacks et al., …

Exploring Men’S Motivations For Studying, And Not Studying, Abroad, Shane Miller Jan 2017

Exploring Men’S Motivations For Studying, And Not Studying, Abroad, Shane Miller

Academic Affairs Publications

A long-standing trend in collegiate study abroad experiences has been the continual underrepresentation of key student demographics. One of the most persistent of these disparities has been the lack of men studying abroad. Between the 1996 and 2007 academic years, men’s participation rate in study abroad experiences consistently hovered at 35%. Female students, in other words, participated in study abroad at a rate nearly twice that of their male peers.

This research project was designed around two hypotheses – that ethnocentrism influenced men’s decisions to study abroad; and that racial or ethnic prejudice influenced men’s decisions to study abroad. In …

The Negotiation Of Racial, Ethnic, And Religious Identification In American Heathenry, Thad Nathan Horrell Jan 2017

The Negotiation Of Racial, Ethnic, And Religious Identification In American Heathenry, Thad Nathan Horrell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigation of religious, ethnic, and racial identification in the social "field" of Heathenry. Heathenry is a reconstructionist religious movement attempting to reconnect with or revive the pre-Christian traditions of the Germanic tribes of northern Europe. Often articulated as an "ethnic religion," Heathenry has also been frequently tied to white supremacist violence and hate crimes. Applying Anthony Wallace's model of revitalization movements, I attempt to make sense of what it is contemporary Heathens are trying to accomplish in today's society: What is it Heathens are trying to revitalize?

As a field of contestation over common-sense meanings …

It Is Expensive To Be Poor: Equity In Financing Education In Turkey (2004–2012), Elene Murvanidze Jan 2017

It Is Expensive To Be Poor: Equity In Financing Education In Turkey (2004–2012), Elene Murvanidze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Turkish government, under the rule of Justice and Development Party (Turkish: Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP), (2002-2017) has conducted many educational reforms. Different researchers have evaluated effectiveness of those policies differently. Some claim that policies result in a more inclusive and diverse educational system, others argue that the reforms would rekindle child labor, increase child brides and condemn girls to illiteracy. In our research we measure the effects of educational reforms on equity in financing education (i.e., out-of-pocket expenditures).

After estimating Gini, Concentration and Kakwani indices, and graphing Lorenz and Concentration curves, we find out that education financing in …

Shhhuicide Stories: A Crip Critical Analysis Of Attempt Survivors' Narrations Of Suicidality, Emily Krebs Jan 2017

Shhhuicide Stories: A Crip Critical Analysis Of Attempt Survivors' Narrations Of Suicidality, Emily Krebs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Estimations suggest that one person in the United States tries to take their own life every 38 seconds (Yeager & Roberts, 2015, p. 38), making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in the nation (AFSP, 2016). Despite the prevalence of this issue, communication surrounding suicidality remains scarce - as do concrete understandings of what causes the desire to die in the first place. Dominant understandings link suicidality to chemical/neurobiological issues in the brain (mental illnesses), but these claims have not yet been scientifically proven (Hjelmeland, Dieserud, Dyregrov, Knizek, & Leenaars, 2012) and, as this study suggests, biomedical aspects of …

Blown Saves: The Fate Of Baseball's Silent Cinema, Marshall G. Most Jan 2017

Blown Saves: The Fate Of Baseball's Silent Cinema, Marshall G. Most

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Over the past three decades, baseball films — motion pictures that take baseball and baseball players as their primary content — have served as the focus for a number of scholarly studies of the game and its place in American culture. Scholars including Gary Dickerson (1991), Howard Good (1997), Stephen Wood and David Pincus (2003), Marshall Most and Robert Rudd (2006), and others have found the intersection of the national pastime and Hollywood film a rich site for cultural analysis.1 The game of baseball is said to embody the most fundamental and significant values and virtues of the nation. …

Van Oster V. Kansas And The Unconstitutionality Of Civil Forfeiture, Thomas Senst Jan 2017

Van Oster V. Kansas And The Unconstitutionality Of Civil Forfeiture, Thomas Senst

Undergraduate Review

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the contradictory nature of civil forfeiture through a case analysis of Van Oster v. Kansas and compare the precedent established in this case to current civil forfeiture laws. This case has not received the proper attention that it deserves in civil forfeiture scholarly literature. Van Oster represents a case in which the Supreme Court upheld civil forfeiture, yet the internal logic of their justification suggests that civil forfeiture is unconstitutional. Additionally, this paper will conceptualize judicial dictions and opinions delivered by Justice Brandeis and Justice Holmes, who both served on the Supreme …

Examing The Effects Of Energy Deprivation On The Strength Model Of Self-Control: An Imposition Theory, Jiayin Qu Jan 2017

Examing The Effects Of Energy Deprivation On The Strength Model Of Self-Control: An Imposition Theory, Jiayin Qu

Psychology Honors Projects

The strength model of self control suggests exerting self-control consumes an energy resource that is depleted in subsequent tasks. Past research is equivocal whether such depletion happens and whether glucose can reverse it. We proposed an imposition theory to reconcile the contradiction: (1) energy deprivation is a prerequisite condition; (2) awareness of deprivation modulates the extent of depletion. The results suggested that rats showed more self-control depletion and performance across different conditions was more consistent when food deprived compared to when not. There was also a marginal effect of awareness of the deprivation.

The Nazi Fiscal Cliff: Unsustainable Financial Practices Before World War Ii, Parker Abt Jan 2017

The Nazi Fiscal Cliff: Unsustainable Financial Practices Before World War Ii, Parker Abt

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The Nazis inherited a weak economy, withered by the Great Depression and periods of hyperinflation, when they took power in 1933. Over the next six years, primarily through a military buildup, the Nazi economy grew like none other in the world. This paper traces the methods the Nazis used to finance this economic rebound. Through an analysis of secret government documents, Nuremburg witness statements, and the latest scholarly research, this paper posits that the methods used to finance the economy were unsustainable. Further, it finds that by September 1939, the economy was in a state of dangerous disarray.
