Desconocido: Conversion To Islam In México, Ashley E. Dunn Jan 2017

Desconocido: Conversion To Islam In México, Ashley E. Dunn

International Studies Honors Projects

Unless proven otherwise, subaltern subjects are assumed to lack agency. Through an exploration of conversion to Islam in México in the southern state of Chiapas, in the north along las fronteras, and in Mexico City, this project intervenes in discourses that deny the subaltern agency. Through the analytical frameworks of coloniality, this project redefines the choices that converts make and their expressions of faith as acts of creation, as inherently authentic, and as articulations of their desires. Converts to Islam in México serve as a case study of modes of resistance against the epistemological powers of coloniality.

Novel Methods For Quantifying Spatio-Temporal Change In Glaciated And Subaqueous Environments, Jordan Mertes Jan 2017

Novel Methods For Quantifying Spatio-Temporal Change In Glaciated And Subaqueous Environments, Jordan Mertes

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In many scientific fields, it is important to actively develop new approaches to monitoring and quantifying changes within different systems. Often adapting existing tools or applying techniques from alternative fields can greatly improve our ability to monitor spatial and temporal changes. In this dissertation, I present four studies aimed at demonstrating new innovative ways at improving our ability to observe and quantify changes occurring on glaciers, submerged cultural resources (SCRs) and supraglacial lakes by using technology such as Structure from Motion + Multi-view stereo photogrammetry (SfM) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveying combined with facies analysis.

I have successfully reconstructed …

Revelations From A Resident Assistant Mentoring Study: Misalignment On Mentoring, Sherry Early Phd, Britt Frye, Jessica M. Hanna Edd

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

What do we really know about mentoring Resident Assistants (RAs)? Does mentoring affect RAs’ leadership efficacies? To address these two research questions we created a successful collaborative research project between Housing and Residence Life (HRL) and Leadership Studies faculty. We wanted to learn more about mentoring encounters/relationships and leadership efficacy (self-efficacy and leadership behaviors). Any successful assessment or research project requires communication and delegation of tasks.

Developing Student Leaders In Campus Outdoor Recreation Programs: An Appreciative Inquiry, Dan Sandberg, Bruce Martin, Andrew Szolosi, Sherry Early Phd

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

Campus outdoor recreation programs can play an integral role in developing student leaders. In this study, we sought a better understanding of the shared positive elements exemplary outdoor programs are using to develop their student leaders. The study was designed using a collective case study methodology and the theoretical lens of the Leadership Identity Development (LID) model. Representatives from five exemplary outdoor programs were interviewed with an appreciative inquiry approach. Five common themes emerged from the data: (a) Institutional Support, (b) Transformative Experiences, (c) Meaningful Culture, (d) Facilitative Structures, and (e) the Keys to the Castle: Authentic Leadership Opportunities. Asterix, Carnival, And The Wonder Of Everyday Life, Jeremy Barris Jan 2017

Asterix, Carnival, And The Wonder Of Everyday Life, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s Asterix novels present us with a charmingly silly world. Their shared premise is that, during the time of the Roman Empire, a tiny Gaulish village has a magic potion that makes its inhabitants extremely strong and fast, and this allows the village to keep the entire Roman Empire at a hopeless disadvantage. The main character is a wily little warrior named Asterix who, with his good, very large, and not very bright friend Obelix, has many absurd adventures as he travels in the Roman world and beyond. I shall explore Asterix at the Olympic Games, …

The Us Perspective On Nato Under Trump: Lessons Of The Past And Prospects For The Future, Joyce P. Kaufman Jan 2017

The Us Perspective On Nato Under Trump: Lessons Of The Past And Prospects For The Future, Joyce P. Kaufman

Political Science

As a new and unpredictable administration takes power in Washington, the relationship that the United States will have with its European allies remains unclear. There is understandably concern on both sides of the Atlantic about what this change will mean for the US relationship with NATO and the security guarantees that have been in place for almost 70 years. These concerns are not without foundation: just days before his inauguration, President-elect Trump once again described NATO as ‘obsolete’. Contradictory statements made by Trump and his candidates for Secretary of Defense and State raise further questions about the direction of US …

2 Theory For A Bioarchaeology Of Community: Potentials, Practices, And Pitfalls, Ann M. Kakaliouras Jan 2017

2 Theory For A Bioarchaeology Of Community: Potentials, Practices, And Pitfalls, Ann M. Kakaliouras

Anthropology

This chapter is an exploration of theory and practice that could be useful for the articulation of a “bioarchaeology of community.” “Community” is a more complex and vexing concept than meets the eye, and its meaning has changed significantly over the past few centuries. This chapter reviews the varied meanings of community in the recent past, evaluates archaeological understandings of community, and explores current uses of social theory in bioarchaeology. Lastly, I lay out a potential theoretical and ethical roadmap for bioarchaeologists who wish to investigate past communities.

Multidimensional Poverty Among The Native- And Foreign-Born In The United States: Evidence From The 2010-2014 American Community Surveys, Roger White, Stacy Yamasaki Jan 2017

Multidimensional Poverty Among The Native- And Foreign-Born In The United States: Evidence From The 2010-2014 American Community Surveys, Roger White, Stacy Yamasaki

Economics

We examine data from the 2010-2014 American Community Survey 5-year Public Use Microdata Sample files (U.S. Census, 2016) and employ the methodology of Alkire and Foster (2009) to measure multidimensional poverty in the United States. While our findings confirm the results of earlier studies, we also report considerable variation across native- and foreign-born residents of the U.S. and across immigrant home countries in terms of the incidence and intensity of deprivation and, thus, in Multidimensional Poverty Index values. Our econometric analysis identifies several factors that contribute to multidimensional poverty and, again, we examine variation in the determinants across both native- …

Visualizing Space, Your Depository As Place, Aimée C. Quinn Jan 2017

Visualizing Space, Your Depository As Place, Aimée C. Quinn

Library Scholarship

A decade ago, libraries began to reimagine their roles from traditional institutions of knowledge storehouses and repositories to social organisms of growth. With the advent of social media and an ever-increasing demand for information, today’s users request more flexible spaces for a variety of uses including the traditional library, but also for e-government services, information literacy education, social liaisons, gaming, safe and neutral spaces for all kinds of public discourse and a host of other societal projects for all ages. An outstanding study of the library as place was captured a decade ago by John Buschman and Gloria Leckie.[i] …

Title Change Characteristics Of Academic And Nonacademic Serials, Mavis B. Molto Jan 2017

Title Change Characteristics Of Academic And Nonacademic Serials, Mavis B. Molto

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

The study compared the characteristics of academic and nonacademic serials with title changes, from which it was determined that the two serial subpopulations were similar in the six broad reasons found for a title change but differed in the kinds and proportions of subject and function changes that occurred when a title changed. On the basis of the findings, two alternate RDA rule revision proposals are made (labeled Ideal versus Practical), the first requiring a new access point for a title change only when a significant subject or function change has occurred, and the second requiring a new access point …

Preschool Children’S Biophilia And Attitudes Toward Nature: The Effect Of Personal Experiences, Ruddy E. Yanez, Bronwyn S. Fees, Julia C. Torquati

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Regular engagement outside may promote healthy physical and psychological development as well as a respect and appreciation for nature. This exploratory study compared biophilia and attitudes toward nature between young children living in an urban area to those in a rural area. Urban and rural areas may offer different opportunities for exposure and engagement with elements such as water, plants, and animals. A comparison between young children in these settings may determine if experience in these different environments affects their attitudes and biophilia. Thirty-six children (urban n = 27; rural n = 9) participated in one-on-one structured interviews about their …
