Background: Adolescent sexual risk taking and its consequences remain a global public health concern. Empirical evidence on the impact that social media has on sexual health behaviors among youth is sparse.
Objective: The study aimed to examine the relationship between social media and the change in sexual risk over time and whether parental monitoring moderates this relationship.
Methods: This study comprised a sample of 555 Latino youth aged 13-19 years from Maryland, United States completing baseline and follow-up surveys. Mixed-effects linear regression was used to examine the relationship between social media and the change in sexual risk over time and …
The European Immigration Crisis: An Analysis Of How Terror Attacks Have Affected Immigrant And Refugee Populations In Western Europe, Taylor M. Scimeca
The European Immigration Crisis: An Analysis Of How Terror Attacks Have Affected Immigrant And Refugee Populations In Western Europe, Taylor M. Scimeca
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The 2015 European Immigration Crisis brought an unprecedented number of immigrants to parts of Western Europe as millions of people fled war-torn and politically unstable countries. Similar to the increase in immigrants, Western European countries have also been combatting the rise of terror attacks throughout Europe. The increase in immigration coupled with an increase in terror attacks has caused anti-refugee sentiments among some Europeans and demands for stricter immigration policies. This paper examines how terrorism has impacted refugee and immigrant populations throughout Western Europe with a focus on Germany, France, and Belgium following the 2015 European Immigration Crisis.

"I Made A Choice": Exploring The Persuasion Tactics Used By Online Romance Scammers In Light Of Cialdini's Compliance Principles, Aaron K. Archer
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Online romance scams cause a disproportionately high amount of loss to victims when compared to other cybercrimes, and evidence suggests these scams may be more pervasive than official figures indicate. Unlike some other cybercrimes, an online romance scam is only successful to the extent that the scammer can persuade the victim to carry out requests. In his book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, psychologist Robert Cialdini has identified six psychological principles often exploited by those seeking to gain the compliance of others; these principles may provide a good framework for understanding the effectiveness of the tactics used by online romance …
A Current And Increasing Problem Of Anti-Social Behavior Via Anonymity Using Electronic Mediums Demanding Recognition As A Biophsychosocial Disorder That Perpetuates Criminal Behavior Online, Hannah Wood Despres
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Most people who commit crime fall into a classification of criminological, sociological or psychological disorders called biopsychosocial disorders. Cyber-crime is unique in the fact that, cyber criminals can commit crimes behind completely closed doors and they are virtually anonymous. This makes for a varied environment of theory on the causation of cyber-crimes. The proposed disorder theory, computer mediated anonymity asocial disordered theory, is based on the notion that the anonymous nature of electronic mediums in communication has significantly changed people’s interpersonal skills. The change in interpersonal development is therefore affecting social engagement behavior online and has allowed a lack of …

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This research examines the existing data in order to determine if there is sufficient criminological, sociological, and academic research done that can develop way
to reduce the demand of prostitution. Seeking to use different ways to reduce the demand for prostitution, it is found that legalization, strict enforcement of legal norms, and a number of public shaming ideas could very well be useful. Men between the ages of 25 to 40 are the highest solicitation age group, these men make up a majority of the statistics. Survey information from StatisticBrain (2016) and Roeben (2015) are utilized to demonstrate the attitudes …

Child Sex Tourism And The Lack Of Deterrence That Drives The Problem, Ian Voelkel
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Child sex tourism is a transnational issue that has grown over the past 30-years. The international community has taken numerous steps in the prevention of child sex tourism; however, there is a severe lack of statistics, research, and empirically driven data that could help deter the problem. This exploratory study will use random probability selection in an online survey to explore whether a certain level of deterrence can affect an individual’s rational choice in practicing child sex tourism. By utilizing a quantitative methodology this study will identify whether an individual’s knowledge of the legality of child sex tourism affects their …

Decomposition Of Sexual Orientation Wage Gap In Massachusetts And Alabama From 2001 To 2015, Shuhao Zhang Ms
Decomposition Of Sexual Orientation Wage Gap In Massachusetts And Alabama From 2001 To 2015, Shuhao Zhang Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Sexual orientation wage gap has been an emerging topic in economic analysis. In United States, most of the research is focused on national level. However, given the deeply divided political ideologies on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights issues such as same-sex marriage legislation among different states, one might wonder whether the wage gap would be also different. In this paper, we take the first step to present a systematical comparison of the sexual orientation wage gap from the past 15 years between Massachusetts and Alabama, who are opposite sides on almost every issue regarding LGBT rights. We employed …

Employment And Economic Wellbeing Of Single Female-Headed Households, Dwitiya Jawer Neethi Ms
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
This study focuses on the the employment and economic wellbeing of single female-headed households in the United States in the years 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013. This has been examined from two vantage points: a Heckman Selection Model shows that the reservation wage for the nonemployed single female heads is lower than the employed single female heads. This indicates a lack of suitable jobs for the nonemployed single female heads. The other mode of investigation involves an economic wellbeing analysis of single female heads using the Levy Institute Measure of Economic Wellbeing. The LIMEW analysis shows that while the gap …

NSAIDs are commonly used among athletes for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this research is to gain insight on Division III athletes’view and opinions of NSAIDs. A survey was developed incorporating the Theory of Planned Behavior and distributed to all winter and spring athletic teams of one Midwestern Dill University. By utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study found attitude toward behavior as the strongest predictor of behavioral intention (p < .001), while both Perceived Behavioral control (p < .001) and Intention (p < .001) were statistically significant predictors of behavior. Another finding from the study was that athletes perceived less than 25% of their teammates as taking NSAIDs. Displaying the importance of an athlete s own personal values and opinions of NSAID use was the strongest predictor of intentions. Further assessment should include more athletes to get a better representation of the athletic department.
Self-Compassion And Its Relation To Nonsuicidal Self-Injury, Justin M. Wiseman
Self-Compassion And Its Relation To Nonsuicidal Self-Injury, Justin M. Wiseman
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
There have been relatively few studies that have empirically explored the relationship between self-compassion and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Previous studies have found that engagement in self-injurious behaviors is closely related to being self-critical (Glassman, Weierich, Hooley, Deliberto, & Nock, 2007; Hooley, Ho, Slater, & Lockshin, 2010).Therefore, it has been suggested that higher levels of self-compassion may be associated with less engagement in NSSI. The current study explored the relationship between self-reported self-compassion and past self-reported occurrences of NSSI. This study used Neff's (2003a) 12 item Self-Compassion Scale- Short Form (SCS-SF) to measure one's level of self-compassion and a Client Information/Demographics …

Creating A More Accessible Environment For Our Users With Disabilities: Responding To An Office For Civil Rights Complaint, Donna E. Mccrea
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
In 2012, a University of Montana student advocacy organization filed a complaint with the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights stating that unequal access to the university’s electronic and information technologies (EIT) resulted in discrimination against students with disabilities. This article shares ways in which the University of Montana, including its archives and special collections, responded to the resulting mandate that “employees must create, obtain, and maintain all EIT in a manner that ensures it is accessible to individuals with disabilities.” The author argues that a professional and ethical commitment to diversity, access, and use compels archivists and …

The Relationship Between Perceived Gender Discrimination And Counterproductive Work Behaviors, Rachel Jaffe
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Counterproductive work behaviors are costly behaviors that individuals employ in retaliation to adverse stimuli in the workplace. This study specifically examined the relationship between perceived gender discrimination and counterproductive behaviors, using the variable of control as the mediator. This study also investigated the relationship between perceived gender discrimination and job turnover intentions as well as organizational commitment. Measures for perceived gender discrimination, control, counterproductive work behaviors, job turnover and organizational commitment were used to survey 97 participants on their workplace experiences and attitudes. It was found that perceived gender discrimination had a significant, positive correlation with counterproductive behaviors, as originally …

The specific examples are provided to demonstrate concrete ways in which a university without a renowned brand can adopt tactics which will increase its market for quality products which are in demand. The requirements are that the university renders its use of media advertising current in method and sufficient in amount. It may also be necessary to assume equilibrium and counter it by advertising in a manner for which the assumptions required for equilibrium are weak or not present. Finally, it is proposed that the exemplar graduate school program methods can be replicated, mutatis mutandis, in undergraduate programs and other …

A Review Of The Multiple-Sample Tests For The Continuous-Data Type, Dewi Rahardja
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
For continuous data, various statistical hypotheses testing methods have been extensively discussed in the literature. In this article a review is provided of the multiple-sample continuous-data testing methods. It includes traditional methods, such as the two-sample t-test, Welch ANOVA test, etc., as well as newly-developed ones, such as the various Multiple Comparison Procedure (MCP). A roadmap is provided in a figure or diagram format as to which methods are available in the literature. Additionally, the implementation of these methods in popular statistical software packages such as SAS is also presented. This review will be helpful to determine which continuous-data testing …
Factor Analysis By Limited Scales: Which Factors To Analyze?, Stan Lipovetsky
Factor Analysis By Limited Scales: Which Factors To Analyze?, Stan Lipovetsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Factor Analysis (FA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are well-known main tools of the multivariate statistics for data analysis, reduction, and visualization. Commonly, the analysis and interpretation of their solutions is performed for each of several main eigenvectors with variances explaining a big part of the total variability in data. The recommendation is to determine if all the main vectors are really needed in the analysis, or some of them should be skipped if they correspond to the absence of the analyzing features. A simple criterion for identifying redundant vectors of loadings is their negative correlation with the vector of …
Prediction Of Percent Change In Linear Regression By Correlated Variables, Stan Lipovetsky
Prediction Of Percent Change In Linear Regression By Correlated Variables, Stan Lipovetsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Multiple linear regression can be applied for predicting an individual value of dependent variable y by the given values of independent variables x. But it is not immediately clear how to estimate percent change in y due to changes in predictors, especially when those are correlated. This work considers several approaches to this problem, including its formulation via predictors adjusted by their correlation structure. Ordinary least squares regression is used, together with Shapley value regression and another model based on solving some system of differential equations. Numerical estimations performed for a real marketing research data demonstrate meaningful results. The considered …
The Evolution Of Football Rules, Veronica Glanville
The Evolution Of Football Rules, Veronica Glanville
2017 Symposium
Football, as we know it, has changed significantly since it's humble beginnings in 1892. In it's early beginnings, football was an all-out brawl. The first football game was played in 1869. It was an intercollegiate contest between Rutgers and Princeton universities, but the game was played according to soccer rules modified from the London Football Association. During the next seven years, rugby gained popularity over soccer and modern football was launched from Rugby. In 1876, the Intercollegiate Football Association (IFA) was formed by Columbia, Princeton, Yale, and Harvard universities. IFA was dedicated to playing football according to rugby rules. Walter …

Understanding How Social Entrepreneurs Fit Into The Tourism Discourse, Ziene Mottiar, Karla Boluk
Books / Book chapters
This chapter discusses how social entrepreneurs fit into the existing tourism discourse. It examines four areas of literature in particular, tourism entrepreneurs, sustainability, destination development and intrapreneurship, and analyzes how introducing the concept of social entrepreneurs into these discussions is useful, and contributes to our understanding. Furthermore the paper illustrates that as social entrepreneurs are relevant to a broad range of issues in the tourism literature this should prevent the development of research silos where social entrepreneurship scholars seek out their own vein of research. The nexus of common ground and interests, as displayed in this chapter, should enhance the …

Scaling Up The Self, Scaling Down The World: Self-Objectification And The Politics Of Carbon Offsets And Personalised Genomics, Joshua Reno
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
Two global initiatives, the Genographic Project and the Carbon Lottery, share an ambition to make abstract, global processes—human evolution and climate change—comprehensible and engaging to non-specialists. Despite their differences, they both do so by means of self-objectifications that scale up the selves of participants and scale down complex, spatio-temporal models of human-world relations. Based on the author’s auto-ethnographic experience as a participant in both initiatives, it is argued that carbon calculators and personalised genomics involves a pragmatics of scale that evaluates and compares users on the basis of their relative expression of, or deviation from, a standard. Furthermore, this is …

This field experiment examined the effects of a gratefulness intervention in the context of a Christian church congregation. Two Christian congregations with comparable demographic and socio-economic characteristics were enrolled and assigned to the experimental and comparison conditions. The gratitude intervention was developed collaboratively with church leaders. Though within-subject effects were found for psychological well-being, spiritual well-being, life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, daily spiritual experiences, and favorable views of psychology and interdisciplinary collaboration, the comparison group showed similar increases to the intervention group. Thus, the effects of the gratitude intervention were supported within but not across groups. No significant changes …

This paper examines the effectiveness of communication on Instagram, a type of visual social networking site, by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Results show that the TSA’s Instagram account elicited stronger emotional reactions than a private consumer product business Instagram account. More importantly, perceived usefulness of content, perceived persuasive intent of content, and negative emotions all affected attitudes toward the TSA. Additionally, perceived usefulness of content and negative emotions also influenced communicative action regarding the TSA account. Findings demonstrate the emotional impact of visual communication and the role of both cognitive and affective evaluations in changing attitudes and behavior …
