Thalamic abnormalities are considered part of the complex pathophysiology of schizophrenia, particularly the involvement of specific thalamic nuclei. The goals of this study were to: introduce a novel atlas-based parcellation scheme for defining various thalamic nuclei; compare their integrity in a schizophrenia sample against healthy individuals at baseline and follow-up time points, as well as rates of change over time; examine relationships between the nuclei and abnormalities in known connected cortical regions; and finally, to determine if schizophreniarelated thalamic nuclei changes relate to cognitive functioning and clinical symptoms. Subjects were from a larger longitudinal 2-year follow-up study, schizophrenia (n=20) and …

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the effects of source and crisis response strategy on crisis communication outcomes in the context of social media. A 3 (source: organization, CEO, or customer) × 2 (strategy: accommodative or defensive) × 2 (crisis type: airline crash or bank hacking) mixed experimental study was conducted with 391 participants. The organizational sources were more likely to be perceived as more credible than the non-organizational sources. In particular, the CEO appeared to be the most trustworthy and credible source in delivering crisis messages. The path analysis indicated that perceived source credibility mediated the effect of source on reputation and …

When Erm Met Alma: The Intricacies Of Content Management In A Shared Consortia Landscape, Siôn Romaine, Jian Wang

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

In 2013, after nearly two decades of operating in a distributed legacy Integrated Library System (ILS) environment on local servers, the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of public and private academic libraries in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, began a two-year-long process to migrate its 37 members to a shared implementation of Ex Libris's cloud-based Alma library management system (LMS) and Primo discovery interface. Although much has been written on electronic resource management (ERM) functionality at an institution level, little has been written on serials and ERM functionality and workflows within a shared consortial environment. This article discusses the challenges and …

Comparing Depression Screening Tools In Persons With Multiple Sclerosis (Ms), Joshua Hanna, Jonathan Santo, Mervin Blair, Kathy Smolewska, Erin Warriner, Sarah A. Marrow

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective: Depression is more common among persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) than the general population. Depression in MS is associated with reduced quality of life, transition to unemployment, and cognitive impairment. Two proposed screening measures for depression in MS populations are the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS). Our objective was to compared the associations of the BDI-FS and the HADS-D scores with history of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and functional outcomes to determine the differential clinical utility of these screening measures among persons with MS. Method: We reviewed charts of 133 persons with …

Mediating The Relation Of Socioeconomic Risk And Kindergarten Readiness With Self-Regulation: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Teacher-Child Relationships, Leah Cohen Marks Feb 2017

Mediating The Relation Of Socioeconomic Risk And Kindergarten Readiness With Self-Regulation: Investigating The Moderating Role Of Teacher-Child Relationships, Leah Cohen Marks

Theses and Dissertations

School readiness is important for children, families, teachers, and schools. School readiness is defined as children’s preparedness to be successful in the kindergarten setting. It can encompass academic, social-emotional, and behavioral skills, all of which predict future outcomes (Duncan et al., 2007). School readiness can be particularly important for children at risk for school failure due to poverty (Ryan, Fauth, & Brooks-Gunn, 2013). Considering which risk and resilience factors may be present for these children is important. Another important variable is self-regulation, which includes voluntary control approach and withdrawal behavior tendencies including the ability to inhibit a dominant response and …

Silence For Children In A Fast-Paced, Nature-Deprived, And Digital World, Erin Sheehan Feb 2017

Silence For Children In A Fast-Paced, Nature-Deprived, And Digital World, Erin Sheehan

Mindfulness Studies Theses

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential benefits of integrating mindfulness practice into family life based on the idea of the changing nature of modern childhood. This changing nature increases the need for mindfulness interventions and will be discussed based on three main themes: the increase in speed of life and subsequent stress, decrease in free-play and time spent in nature, and the inundation of digital influence and distraction. There will be a focus on the notion of silence as an important element of mindfulness practice. This paper will offer an initial understanding of these topics based …

Mindful Fathering: An Investigation And Curriculum, Andrew Dobson Feb 2017

Mindful Fathering: An Investigation And Curriculum, Andrew Dobson

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This two-part paper explores the current state of fathering in the United States of America, and aims at highlighting the importance of active fatherly engagement in the lives of children. Statistics from the United States Census (2010) show that 29.5 percent of children under the age of 18 in the United States of America live in fatherless homes. When a father is engaged in the life of a child, developmental outcomes increase (Roopnarine, 2015). This signals a need to investigate solutions to this problem. Mindfulness is offered as a remedy, and mindfulness programs like Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and …

Predicting Modification And Revocation Of Insanity Acquittees On Conditional Release Using The Short-Term Assessment Of Risk And Treatability, Heidi Oliver Feb 2017

Predicting Modification And Revocation Of Insanity Acquittees On Conditional Release Using The Short-Term Assessment Of Risk And Treatability, Heidi Oliver

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Violence risk assessment has evolved significantly over the past 50 years. The newest generation of risk assessment tools is intended not only to assess risk but also to inform treatment. The Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability, i.e., the START, is an example of a 4thgeneration tool that identifies risk and protective factors, highlighting the dynamic variables that may decrease risk. As treatment for mentally ill offenders shifts from inpatient hospital environments to community-based treatment settings, a focus on dynamic risk factors is crucial for maintaining safety for patients and the community. This study aimed to identify the predictive validity …

The Relationship Between Gratitude And Health Behaviors, Jacob Lowen Feb 2017

The Relationship Between Gratitude And Health Behaviors, Jacob Lowen

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Gratitude interventions lead to significant increases in subjective, psychological, spiritual, and physical well-being. These benefits may be because grateful individuals are better able to form social bonds, better able to utilize coping skills to defer stress, better able to maintain positive affect, and are more creative in problem solving. It remains unclear what mechanism(s) are responsible for the positive benefits associated with gratitude and whether the link between gratitude and health enhancement is bidirectional. The current study seeks to explore the link between gratitude and health behaviors by measuring the increase or maintenance of gratitude over time in response to …

The Unique Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Resilience Of Korean Transracial Adoptees, Sue Han Feb 2017

The Unique Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Resilience Of Korean Transracial Adoptees, Sue Han

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Korean transracial adoptees (KTAs) participated in this quantitative research studying the roles of ethnic identity, self-esteem, acculturation, social support, and family cohesion in predicting resiliency for KTAs using self-report measures. KTAs also completed a demographics questionnaire in which they self-identified in terms of Korean, Korean-American, American, or other. The correlation between self-identification and level of acculturation and ethnic identity was also analyzed. Age and level of ethnic identity was assessed. Results showed that selfesteem is the only significant predictor of resilience. It was found that those who self-identified as Korean American had higher ethnic identity levels. No significant relationship was …

Norming The Young Schema Questionnaire In The U.S., Elizabeth Di Francisco

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Since publication in 2005, the Young Schema Questionnaire Short-‐version 3rd Edition (YSQ-‐S3) has increased in popularity over the years among psychologists in Europe and the U.S.; yet to date it has not been normed within a U.S. sample. A sample of 148 participants completed eight demographic questions, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder -‐7 (GAD-‐7), Patient Health Questionnaire -‐9 (PHQ-‐9), and YSQ-‐S3 via Survey Monkey. Participants were classified into clinical and non-‐clinical groups depending on responses to the GAD-‐7, PHQ-‐9, and demographic questions. YSQ-‐S3 results were analyzed via SPSS 23.0 to conduct descriptive statistics, one-‐way ANOVA, and exploratory analyses to test the …

Collective Multiagent Sequential Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau Feb 2017

Collective Multiagent Sequential Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Duc Thien Nguyen, Akshat Kumar, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multiagent sequential decision making has seen rapid progress with formal models such as decentralized MDPs and POMDPs. However, scalability to large multiagent systems and applicability to real world problems remain limited. To address these challenges, we study multiagent planning problems where the collective behavior of a population of agents affects the joint-reward and environment dynamics. Our work exploits recent advances in graphical models for modeling and inference with a population of individuals such as collective graphical models and the notion of finite partial exchangeability in lifted inference. We develop a collective decentralized MDP model where policies can be computed based …

The Effect Of Workplace Inspections On Worker Safety, Ling Li, Perry Singleton Feb 2017

The Effect Of Workplace Inspections On Worker Safety, Ling Li, Perry Singleton

Center for Policy Research

The Occupation Safety and Health Administration enforces safety regulations through workplace inspections. To identify the effect of inspections on worker safety, this study exploits quasi-experimental variation in inspections due to OSHA’s Site Specific Targeting plan. The SST plan used establishment-level data on accidents and injuries to target establishments for inspection. The primary inspection list consisted of establishments with case rates exceeding a cutoff. This cutoff generated a discontinuous increase in inspections, which is used to identify the effect of inspections on worker safety. Using the fuzzy regression discontinuity design and local linear regression, the estimated effect of an inspection on …

Policy Considerations Regarding The Integration Of Lusophone West African Immigrant Populations, Kezia Lartey, Brandon D. Lundy

Faculty Articles

On January 23, 2012, Resolution No. 3 enacted the National Immigration Strategy for the island nation of Cabo Verde, the first of its kind in the country. As a buffer nation to Western Europe with a rapidly developing economy and good governance indicators, Cabo Verde is transitioning from a sending and transit country to a receiving nation for African mainlanders, especially from Guinea-Bissau. How effective are these immigration policies at managing these changing mobility patterns? Are immigrants successfully integrating into host communities? How might integration be handled more effectively? This policy briefing reports integration successes and failures from ethnographic research …
