A Coming Of Age For Mediation In Singapore? Mediation Act 2016, Dorcas Quek Anderson Mar 2017

A Coming Of Age For Mediation In Singapore? Mediation Act 2016, Dorcas Quek Anderson

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The Mediation Act 2016 was recently passed by the Singapore Parliament and is soon to come into operation. This legislative comment compares the Act’s key provisions to the common law principles concerning confidentiality and admissibility, enforcement of mediated settlement agreements and stay of proceedings pending mediation. It argues that the Act has refined the common law in certain areas, but has brought about greater uncertainty in other aspects. It also discusses how the major provisions are likely to be applied by the court in light of similar developments in other jurisdictions.

Voices Behind The Veil: Unravelling The Hijab Debate In Singapore Through The Lived Experiences Of Hijab-Wearing Malay-Muslim Women, George Wong, George Wong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article critically examines the hijab debate in Singapore by drawing upon the lived experiences of Singaporean Malay-Muslim women whose daily lives are fraught with a constant negotiation between their identities as veiled women and the institutionalized constraints that impede their social mobility and voices in the public arena. Drawing upon publicly accessible data and findings from in-depth interviews with Malay-Muslim nurses, the article explores the everyday lived struggles of women working in Singapore’s public healthcare sector organizations. These struggles illustrate a decade-old public debate on the hijab. We show how these women’s narratives reflect their intersectional subjectivities, which unravel …

Mental Imagery Boosts Music Compositional Creativity, Sarah Shi Hui Wong, Stephen Wee Hun Lim Mar 2017

Mental Imagery Boosts Music Compositional Creativity, Sarah Shi Hui Wong, Stephen Wee Hun Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We empirically investigated the effect of mental imagery on young children’s music compositional creativity. Children aged 5 to 8 years participated in two music composition sessions. In the control session, participants based their composition on a motif that they had created using a sequence of letter names. In the mental imagery session, participants were given a picture of an animal and instructed to imagine the animal’s sounds and movements, before incorporating what they had imagined into their composition. Six expert judges independently rated all music compositions on creativity based on subjective criteria (consensual assessment). Reliability analyses indicated that the expert …

The Paradox Of Power: Principal-Agent Problems And Fiscal Capacity In Absolutist Regimes, Debin Ma, Jared Rubin Mar 2017

The Paradox Of Power: Principal-Agent Problems And Fiscal Capacity In Absolutist Regimes, Debin Ma, Jared Rubin

ESI Working Papers

Tax extraction in Qing China was low relative to Western Europe. It is not obvious why: China was much more absolutist and had stronger rights over property and people. Why did the Chinese not convert their absolute power into revenue? We propose a model, supported by historical evidence, which suggests that i) the center could not ask its tax collecting agents to levy high taxes because it would incentivize agents to overtax the peasantry; ii) the center could not pay agents high wages in return for high taxes because the center had no mechanism to commit to refrain from confiscating …

Impacts Of Playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (Mmorpgs) On Individuals’ Subjective Sense Of Feeling Connected With Others, Dustin R. Weissman

PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Dissertations (Santa Barbara)

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) are a substantial part of the multibillion dollar gaming industry. Millions of people of all ages across the globe engage in game play. With the average gamer logging 26.6 hours a week online instead of engaging in real world activities and responsibilities, this genre has created an international epidemic. In the last ten years the literature on this topic has gained interest and momentum. Researchers continue to explore the innumerable reaches of MMORPGs and how the gamer and their community are affected. The aim of this study was to gain a more comprehensive understanding …

A Field Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Milorganite As A Repellent For Non-Venomous Rat Snakes (Elaphe Obsolete), George R. Gallagher, Mckenzie Weisser, Daryon Smith, Danielle Creamer

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Milorganite® as a repellent for rat snakes. Milorganite® is the bio solids by-product left from the activated sludge process from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District. During 3, 7-day release periods, 5-6 mature rat snakes were placed within a 0.1ha plastic fence enclosure intended to impede escape. The enclosure contained natural and artificial hides and water. Snakes were fitted with an externally attached radio transmitter with location of each snake determined 3 times per day by radio telemetry and visual confirmation. During the first 2, 7-day period, with no Milorganite® …

Cage Efficacy Study Of Sodium Nitrite Formulations For Rodent Control, Gary Witmer, Rachael Moulton, Celeste Samura Feb 2017

Cage Efficacy Study Of Sodium Nitrite Formulations For Rodent Control, Gary Witmer, Rachael Moulton, Celeste Samura

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Rodents cause extensive damage to human and natural resources around the world. Rodenticides are heavily relied upon to reduce rodent populations and damage. However, some rodenticides are becoming less effective while others are becoming more restricted in their use. Additionally, there are growing concerns about the non-target effects of rodenticides and the humaneness of some rodenticides. In this study, we tested some formulations containing sodium nitrite, a salt that can be toxic in high enough concentrations. One of our previous studies indicated an LD50 of about 246 mg/kg for various rodent species. It was also determined that rodents could eat …

Cage Efficacy Study Of An Experimental Rodenticide Using Wild-Caught House Mice, Gary Witmer, Rachael Moulton, Celeste Samura Feb 2017

Cage Efficacy Study Of An Experimental Rodenticide Using Wild-Caught House Mice, Gary Witmer, Rachael Moulton, Celeste Samura

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

The availability and effectiveness of rodenticides in the US and elsewhere has been changing for various reasons. As a result, new rodenticide formulations and active ingredients are being investigated in the US and other countries. We conducted a cage efficacy study of a paste bait containing 4.4% alphachloralose. A commercial product of this nature is manufactured and used in parts of Europe. While the formulation we tested was effective (100%) in a no-choice trial with wild caught house mice, it was not effective in two-choice trials (≤ 35%). We surmise that palatability may be an issue as the mice consumed …

Novel Technique For Removing Beaver Dams Using A Portable Winch System, Jimmy D. Taylor, Mark Robb, William Hodges, Scott Baras Feb 2017

Novel Technique For Removing Beaver Dams Using A Portable Winch System, Jimmy D. Taylor, Mark Robb, William Hodges, Scott Baras

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Dams and associated impoundments created by American beaver (Castor canadensis) are viewed as positive or negative depending on stakeholder values, their levels of acceptance, and timing. When levels of flooding at beaver dams exceed acceptance levels, immediate actions are required to reduce damage and protect human safety. In Virginia, USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services (WS) often provides assistance to reduce flooding caused by beavers, especially where it affects transportation infrastructure. WS specialists choose from a variety of techniques to best address each unique situation. Until recently, moving damming material by hand or with binary explosives were the most common practices to provide immediate …

Applications Of Sensory Ecology For Wildlife Damage Management, Scott J. Werner, Shelagh T. Deliberto, Anna M. Mangan, Hailey E. Mclean

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Human-wildlife conflicts typically involve fundamental processes associated with the feeding behavior and/or the spatial behavior of wildlife. Thus, most human-wildlife conflicts arise from wildlife consuming products and/or wildlife occupying places valued by humans. For mammals, taste is the most important sensory cue for selecting nutrients and avoiding toxins. Most birds use both flavor (i.e. taste, odor, texture) and visual cues for their food selection process. We previously learned that an ultraviolet visual cue can enhance the repellency of an anthraquinone-based repellent for blackbirds, starlings, Canada geese and wild turkeys. Although the ultraviolet cue is not itself aversive, novel repellent formulations …

Rapid Sounder Removal: A Russell County, Alabama Wild Pig Control Project, Michael Foster, Rod Pinkston Feb 2017

Rapid Sounder Removal: A Russell County, Alabama Wild Pig Control Project, Michael Foster, Rod Pinkston

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Rapid Sounder Removal™ is a time sensitive strategy where emphasis is placed on efficient removal of every sounder expanding at least 1,012 ha within 30 days of operation. The mission is to quickly and efficiently remove 100% of each individual sounder, on multiple properties, in the shortest time possible. Several Integrated Wild Pig Control strategies can be implemented in unison to eliminate wild pig escapes, education, and reproduction from large tracts of land at one time. This concept should be applied by all adjacent landowners to remove entire feral pig populations from a county, water conservation district, or wildlife management …

A Capacity Building Framework For Community-University Partnerships, Katherine S. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Tynan, Virginia J. Covill, Ryan P. Kilmer, James R. Cook

Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice

With a focus on organizational capacity building, community-university (CU) partnerships have the potential to yield valuable resources for community nonprofits, which increasingly have to accomplish more with fewer resources. Although a growing body of literature documents the success of such arrangements, both community agencies and universities often face challenges in managing such partnerships. With a focus on student involvement, this paper describes a framework for conceptualizing CU partnerships around capacity building, with efforts designed to address particular program needs as related to the organization’s capacity goals. These needs can be viewed as involving five levels of capacity building: 1) monitoring …

Corporate Investment And Stock Liquidity: Evidence On The Price Impact Of Trade, Moonsoo Kang, Wei Wang, Chanyoung Eom Feb 2017

Corporate Investment And Stock Liquidity: Evidence On The Price Impact Of Trade, Moonsoo Kang, Wei Wang, Chanyoung Eom

Business Faculty Publications

We document that corporate investment contributes to stock liquidity. This study demonstrates a positive relationship between abnormal corporate investment and stock liquidity in the cross-section.Moreover, stock liquidity
improves more apparently for firms with financial constraints. Our robustness check confirms that the
existing regularities cannot explain the current finding. This analysis suggests that corporate investment decreases
the risk of a firm and that a change in the risk affects the behavior of a market maker, leading to an increase
in stock liquidity.

Marine Mammals In Asian Societies; Trends In Consumption, Bait, And Traditional Use, Lindsay Porter, Hong Yu Lai Feb 2017

Marine Mammals In Asian Societies; Trends In Consumption, Bait, And Traditional Use, Lindsay Porter, Hong Yu Lai

Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection

In Asia many marine mammal species are consumed as food or for other purposes. The prevalence of this exploitation appears to increase from west to east. An escalating use of marine mammals and the emergence of commercialization of a trade in marine mammals is supported by:

  • Regular documentation of both open and covert trade;
  • A shift in focus in some diminishing traditional hunts to other marine mammal species;
  • A possible revival in some targeted hunts, which had previously ceased;
  • The recent implication of some cultures, which have little history of marine mammal consumption previously, in targeted hunts; and
  • The growing …

Keeping Love Alive: Communication Modes, Relational Satisfaction And Communication Satisfaction In Long-Distance Dating Relationships, Taylor Hillard

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Couples in long-distance dating relationships (LDDRs) must determine how to best communicate with one another to maintain their relationship without the advantage of being geographically close. Fortunately, with advances in technology, individuals in LDDRs have multiple options regarding how they choose to communicate with their relational partner. These individuals may utilize more traditional modes, such as letter writing or phone calls, or more modern modes, such as text messaging or social media. However, not all of these communication modes may allow for satisfying communication or communication that benefits the relationship. Therefore, this study investigates how the frequency of use of …

Communicative Behaviors Elicited By Leisure Activities In Memory Care Units, Tarynn Clune

Honors Projects

A wide variety of leisure activities used in reminiscence care have been studied for their merits in terms of preventing cognitive decline, and increasing quality of life; however, little is known about what different types have to offer in terms of communicative opportunities. Communication with peers is imperative for quality of life, and is crucial for maintenance of relationships between the person with dementia (PWD) and their loved ones. As a result of this importance, an exploration of communication elicited by different activities facilitated in a unit was conducted. The communication explored in this study was solely vocal, and included …
