Institutional Regime Shift In Intellectual Property Rights And Innovation Strategies Of Firms In China, Kenneth Guang-Lih Huang, Xuesong Geng, Heli Wang Mar 2017

Institutional Regime Shift In Intellectual Property Rights And Innovation Strategies Of Firms In China, Kenneth Guang-Lih Huang, Xuesong Geng, Heli Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study develops a novel conceptual framework to understand the differential impact of formal institutional regime shift in intellectual property rights on the innovation and patenting strategies of Chinese and Western firms operating in China. We argue that to the extent that Chinese firms have been deeply embedded in China’s informal institutions, they are less responsive to formal institutional changes than Western firms operating in China. Using the major China patent law reform of 2001 as an exogenous event, we find results consistent with our key arguments: With the strengthening of the previously weak (utility model) patent protection, Chinese firms …

Search Strategy Development In A Flipped Library Classroom: A Student-Focused Assessment, Michael C. Goates, Gregory M. Nelson, Megan Frost Mar 2017

Search Strategy Development In A Flipped Library Classroom: A Student-Focused Assessment, Michael C. Goates, Gregory M. Nelson, Megan Frost

Faculty Publications

Librarians at Brigham Young University compared search statement development between traditional lecture and flipped instruction sessions. Students in lecture sessions scored significantly higher on developing search statements than those in flipped sessions. However, student evaluations show a strong preference for pedagogies that incorporate elements from both lecture and flipped methodologies. Reasons for lower flipped-session scores may include a lack of student accountability, strong preference for a live demonstration, and disconnections between online tutorial content and in-class collaborative activities. Librarians using a flipped classroom should consider ways to help students make meaningful connections between online tutorials and in-class activities.

Water Maze Strategies Used By Mice Exposed To Radiation And Pomegranate Juice, Pamela V. Lorenzo Mar 2017

Water Maze Strategies Used By Mice Exposed To Radiation And Pomegranate Juice, Pamela V. Lorenzo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Space radiation can be detrimental to the whole body and can produce oxidative stress in specific areas in the brain. Research has shown that radiation affects the hippocampus, which is responsible for relational/contextual types of learning and memory. Spatial learning and memory is one type of relational learning that is easy to study in animals. The water maze is a test that requires the animal to use spatial navigation skills to find a submerged (hidden) platform in a pool of water. Disease and injury that affect the hippocampus result in spatial learning deficits and altered search strategies in the water …

Is Video Enjoyment Deeper For Those With Adhd?, Daisy Kristina Milman Mar 2017

Is Video Enjoyment Deeper For Those With Adhd?, Daisy Kristina Milman

Theses and Dissertations

To find if video enjoyment was deeper for people with ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactive disorder) than for their non-ADHD peers, subjects with ADHD, and without, had their eye movement tracked during video exposure to determine average saccade rates. I interviewed subjects using pre-tested statements to establish periods of flow state (a measure of enjoyment). Results indicate that there is a deeper sense of enjoyment for people with ADHD, as subjects with ADHD passed a greater average time in flow state during video consumption (27% compared to 21%). Furthermore, the effects of flow state on the eye movement of those with ADHD …

Local And Global Sd-Strategy-Proofness Of Ordinal Mechanisms On Block-Connected Domains, Peng Liu Mar 2017

Local And Global Sd-Strategy-Proofness Of Ordinal Mechanisms On Block-Connected Domains, Peng Liu

Research Collection School Of Economics

The adjacency by Monjardet (2009) is weakened to a flip between two adjacently ranked blocks and called block-adjacency. The connectedness defined accordingly, blockconnectedness, covers some interesting unconnected domains. An ordinal mechanism on a block-connected domain is block-adjacent sd-strategy-proof if reporting the true preference always leads to a lottery that stochastically dominates the lottery delivered by reporting any preference block-adjacent to the sincere one.A condition on a block-connected domain called path-nestedness is proposed and shown sufficient for the equivalence between sd-strategy-proofness and block-adjacent sd-strategy-proofness. The sequentially dichotomous domain by Liu (2017) is an application. In addition, we systematically search for the …

Understanding Public Relations In The 'Sharing Economy', Anne Gregory, Gregor Halff Mar 2017

Understanding Public Relations In The 'Sharing Economy', Anne Gregory, Gregor Halff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In spite of the macro-economic impact of the so-called ‘sharing economy’ there is a nearly complete dearth of contributions from the communication academy to its discourse. More attention is overdue, particularly for the conceptual pressure the ‘sharing economy’ is exerting on the public relations function. The authors propose a reconceptualization of public relations by identifying the constitutive aspects of the sharing economy and bringing together the explanatory concepts ‘circuits of commerce’ and ‘viable matches’ from economic sociology and communicative constitution of organizations theory to develop the notions of ‘deliberate disintermediation’ and ‘circuits of communication’ in public relations. The contention is …

Child's Gender, Parental Monetary Investments And Care Of Elderly Parents In China, Christine Ho Mar 2017

Child's Gender, Parental Monetary Investments And Care Of Elderly Parents In China, Christine Ho

Research Collection School Of Economics

Son biased investments are common in many Asian countries where sons are customarily responsible for providing old age support to parents. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, I find that parents invested nearly twice more in sons than in daughters in terms of college education spending and marriage gifts value. Conversely, parents received relatively higher marginal returns to investment from daughters than from sons in terms of living proximity, monetary and in-kind transfers, and help with instrumental activities of daily living. Family fixed effects models as well as an instrumental variable strategy are employed to control …

How To Describe Objects?, Liu Peng Mar 2017

How To Describe Objects?, Liu Peng

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper addresses the problem of randomly allocating n indivisible objects to n agents where each object can be evaluated according to a set of characteristics. The planner chooses a subset of characteristics and a ranking of them. Then she describes each object as a list of values according to the ranking of those chosen characteristics. Being informed of such a description, each agent figures out her preference that is lexicographically separable according to the characteristics chosen and ranked by the planner. Hence a description of the objects induces a collection of admissible preferences. We call a description good if …

Determinants Of Urban Land Supply In China: How Do Political Factors Matter?, Wen-Tai Hsu, Xiaolu Li, Yang Tang, Jing Wu Mar 2017

Determinants Of Urban Land Supply In China: How Do Political Factors Matter?, Wen-Tai Hsu, Xiaolu Li, Yang Tang, Jing Wu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper explores two political factors for their potential effects on urban land supply in China: corruption, and competition for promotion. We find that standard urban economic predictions hold in the sense that both population and income increases are strongly significant determinants for the increase in urban land supply. Conditional on these demand-side factors, we find that the usage of two-stage auctions (as a proxy for corruption) is highly correlated with the increase in land supply. The corruption effects are strongest for commercial land, followed by residential land and then industrial land. To shed light on the competition motives among …

Lag Length Selection In Panel Autoregression, Chirok Han, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul Mar 2017

Lag Length Selection In Panel Autoregression, Chirok Han, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul

Research Collection School Of Economics

Model selection by BIC is well known to be inconsistent in the presence of incidental parameters. This article shows that, somewhat surprisingly, even without fixed effects in dynamic panels BIC is inconsistent and overestimates the true lag length with considerable probability. The reason for the inconsistency is explained, and the probability of overestimation is found to be 50% asymptotically. Three alternative consistent lag selection methods are considered. Two of these modify BIC, and the third involves sequential testing. Simulations evaluate the performance of these alternative lag selection methods in finite samples.

Joint Spatial Time Series Epidemiological Analysis Of Malaria And Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Infection, O. A. Adegboye, M. Al-Saghir, Denis H. Y. Leung Mar 2017

Joint Spatial Time Series Epidemiological Analysis Of Malaria And Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Infection, O. A. Adegboye, M. Al-Saghir, Denis H. Y. Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

Malaria and leishmaniasis are among the two most important health problems of many developing countries especially in the Middle East and North Africa. It is common for vector-borne infectious diseases to have similar hotspots which may be attributed to the overlapping ecological distribution of the vector. Hotspot analyses were conducted to simultaneously detect the location of local hotspots and test their statistical significance. Spatial scan statistics were used to detect and test hotspots of malaria and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Afghanistan in 2009. A multivariate negative binomial model was used to simultaneously assess the effects of environmental variables on malaria …

Econometric Reviews Honors Esfandiar Maasoumi, Peter C. B. Phillips, Aman Ullah

Research Collection School Of Economics

This Special Issue of Econometric Reviews (ER) is a tribute to Esfandiar Maasoumi for his longstanding contributions to the econometrics profession as an outstanding researcher, a revered teacher and supervisor, and a journal editor of three decades, all of which manifests his extraordinary devotion to the discipline of econometrics and to its growing community of students and scholars. Essie, as he is universally known to his friends, colleagues, and the international community, took on the editorship of ER in 1987. At that point, as (very) senior members of the profession will remember, the journal had a paperback cover, no formal …

Reduced Forms And Weak Instrumentation, Peter C. B. Phillips Mar 2017

Reduced Forms And Weak Instrumentation, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops exact finite sample and asymptotic distributions for a class of reduced form estimators and predictors, allowing for the presence of unidentified or weakly identified structural equations. Weak instrument asymptotic theory is developed directly from finite sample results, unifying earlier findings and showing the usefulness of structural information in making predictions from reduced form systems in applications. Asymptotic results are reported for predictions from models with many weak instruments. Of particular interest is the finding that, in unidentified and weakly identified structural models, partially restricted reduced form predictors have considerably smaller forecast mean square errors than unrestricted reduced …

The Selection And Causal Effects Of Work Incentives On Labor Productivity: Evidence From A Two Stage Randomized Controlled Trial In Malawi, Hyuncheol Bryant Kim, Seonghoon Kim, Thomas T. Kim Mar 2017

The Selection And Causal Effects Of Work Incentives On Labor Productivity: Evidence From A Two Stage Randomized Controlled Trial In Malawi, Hyuncheol Bryant Kim, Seonghoon Kim, Thomas T. Kim

Research Collection School Of Economics

Incentives are essential to promote labor productivity. We implemented a two-stage field experiment to measure effects of career and wage incentives on productivity through self-selection and causal effect channels. First, workers were hired with either career or wage incentives. After employment, a random half of workers with career incentives received wage incentives and a random half of workers with wage incentives received career incentives. We find that career incentives attract higher-performing workers than wage incentives but do not increase productivity for existing workers. Instead, wage incentives increase productivity for existing workers. Observable characteristics are limited in explaining the selection effect.

Transportation Construction Work-Zone Safety Impact On Time-Related Incentive Contracting Projects, Jae-Ho Pyeon, Do Kim Mar 2017

Transportation Construction Work-Zone Safety Impact On Time-Related Incentive Contracting Projects, Jae-Ho Pyeon, Do Kim

Mineta Transportation Institute

Work-zone safety on highway projects continues to be a national concern, and project safety performance is one of the indicators of project success. Many contractors and State Transportation Agencies believe that expedited construction time under incentive contracting contributes to reducing the safety risk of road users traveling through work zones. However, the truth of this belief has never been measured or supported by any statistical evidence. Therefore, this research investigates the statistical relationship between time-related incentive road construction projects and frequency of vehicle crashes in California to understand the impact of time-related incentive provisions on project safety performance. The research …

Transit agencies are interested in assessing the short-, mid-, and long-term performance of infrastructure with the objective of enhancing resiliency and efficiency. This report addresses three distinct aspects of New Jersey’s Transit System: 1) resiliency of bridge infrastructure, 2) resiliency of public transit systems, and 3) efficiency of transit systems with an emphasis on paratransit service.

This project proposed a conceptual framework to assess the performance and resiliency for bridge structures in a transit network before and after disasters utilizing structural health monitoring (SHM), finite element (FE) modeling and remote sensing using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR). The public transit …

Health Effects Of Adverse Childhood Events: Identifying Promising Protective Factors At The Intersection Of Mental And Physical Well-Being, Victoria Banyard, Sherry L. Hamby, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Research documents how exposure to adversity in childhood leads to negative health outcomes across the lifespan. Less is known about protective factors – aspects of the individual, family, and community that promote good health despite exposure to adversity. Guided by the Resilience Portfolio Model, this study examined protective factors associated with physical health in a sample of adolescents and adults exposed to high levels of adversity including child abuse. A rural community sample of 2565 individuals with average age of 30 participated in surveys via computer assisted software. Participants completed self-report measures of physical health, adversity, and a range of …

Battling On The Home Front: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Conflict Behavior Among Military Couples, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, Catherine Caska-Walace, Timothy W. Smith, Keith Renshaw

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This study evaluated interpersonal behavior differences among male military service members with and without PTSD and their female partners. Couples (N = 64) completed a 17-minute videotaped conflict discussion, and their interaction behavior was coded using the circumplex-based Structural Analysis of Social Behavior model (SASB; Benjamin, 1979, 1987, 2000). Within couples, the behavior of partners was very similar. Compared to military couples without PTSD, couples with PTSD displayed more interpersonal hostility and control. Couples with PTSD also exhibited more sulking, blaming, and controlling behavior, and less affirming and connecting behavior, than couples without PTSD. Results advance our understanding of …

From An Emerging Market To A Multifaceted Urban Society: Urban China Studies, Shenjing He, Junxi Qian

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

China is undergoing an urban revolution. In 2011 more than half of the total population resided in cities and towns for the first time in history. Over the last two decades urban China scholars have actively engaged in dialogues with urbanists from different disciplines and different urban contexts. In consequence, urban China studies have embarked on a trail of rapid diversification and proliferation, moving beyond the topics of urbanisation and urban expansion to address a variety of issues echoing the latest developments in the Chinese city. Overall, urban China studies are witnessing a transition from a focus on economic development …

Governance As An Emergent Compromise: Modernization And Flexibility In The Pakistani Electrical Power Sector, Ijlal Naqvi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Developing countries are often characterized by a mix of bad governance and development initiatives seeking to accelerate modernization. When inevitable cracks in the modernization process appear, they create opportunities for informalities to seep in where the influence of power relations and culture can lead to new forms of predation or allow governance compromises to emerge. The article explores this at the national and local levels of the Pakistani electrical power sector, with each level conceptualized as a field of strategic action. The aim is to recognize the importance of emergent compromises for producing workable accommodations of competing interests, improving access …

Family Support For Older Persons In Thailand: Challenges And Opportunities, John Knodel, Bussarawan Puk Teerawichitchainan Mar 2017

Family Support For Older Persons In Thailand: Challenges And Opportunities, John Knodel, Bussarawan Puk Teerawichitchainan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Population aging and the wellbeing of older persons are major emerging challenges for families, communities, and government in Thailand as in much of Asia. Traditionally, support and care for the elderly are met within the family. Adult children are important providers of material support as well as other forms of assistance to their older-age parents. The state and communities typically provide limited care services for the older population. Currently, Thailand is facing demographic and socioeconomic changes that pose significant challenges for the roles that family members, especially adult children, play in providing support for the elderly. This paper empirically examines …

Mobile Cities, Modelling Policies: Importing/Exporting The Singapore ‘Model’ Of Development, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A recent focus of research has been the making, mobility and mutations of urban policy. The global circulation of urban models – or exemplars of best practices and values that are deemed to be desirable and achievable – has gained significant traction. Such models are those that are dislocated from their place of origin, and transplanted to an adopted site. This chapter draws on the case of Singapore: one of the most emblematic examples of an importable/exportable urban model – a prototype for growth-oriented urban development with its normative and technical plans for growth and management – to foreground problems …

Policy Design: From Tools To Patches, Michael Howlett, Ishani Mukherjee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Policy design involves the purposive attempt by governments to link pol-icy instruments or tools to the goals they would like to realize. The studyof policy design focuses on these tools, their advantages and disadvan-tages and better understanding the processes around their selectio n anddeployment in order to improve policy-making efforts and outcomes. The road map for the development of this approach to the policy sciencesstretches from early works in public policy studies around the identifica-tion of policy tools and the classification of instrument types in the 1960sand early 1970s (Design 1.0), to present-day studies that strive to effec-tively formulate effective and …

Veiled Lives? Muslim Women, Headscarves, And Manufacturing Islam, Aliya Hamid Rao Mar 2017

Veiled Lives? Muslim Women, Headscarves, And Manufacturing Islam, Aliya Hamid Rao

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The essentialist and dichotomizing battle over who is ideologically, morally, indeed humanly, more advanced (the West or the rest), has for centuries been fought over women’s bodies. A few hundred years ago the rationale for imperialism in the case of the British Raj included the idea of white men saving brown women from brown men. The post 9/11 invasion of Afghanistan was also partly justified as a war between good and evil, with the US representing all that is good in terms of democracy, human rights, and, significantly, women’s rights.
