Volunteer Perceptions Of Upward And Downward Communication Facilitate Organizational Commitment, Kelly Prange
Volunteer Perceptions Of Upward And Downward Communication Facilitate Organizational Commitment, Kelly Prange
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Retaining productive volunteers is an essential issue nonprofit organizations face, as volunteers help extend the services of their target populations. The current study examined upward and downward communication and training as important volunteer management practices with respect to facilitating volunteer engagement and commitment. Using social exchange theory as a framework, the present study investigated the reasons why organizations should stress giving volunteers training and open communication and soliciting feedback from volunteers. Doing so may initiate a social exchange relationship in which volunteers receive training and communication from organizations and in turn become more engaged and committed to the organization. As …
Influence Of Meeting Humor Styles On Meeting Satisfaction, Michael Yoerger
Influence Of Meeting Humor Styles On Meeting Satisfaction, Michael Yoerger
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Drawing from theory on humor styles, impression management, and workplace meetings, we developed a video vignette followed by a survey to examine meeting satisfaction. We began by investigating whether there were differences in meeting satisfaction based on differences in the type of humor utilized. We then investigated how individual differences in impression management affects the perception of affiliative and aggressive humor. We found that there were a variety of statistically significant differences in t-test comparisons of humor conditions utilized. Differences in impression management were not associated with differences in meeting satisfaction in the affiliative or aggressive humor condition. One finding …

Enhancing The Citizen Scientist Experience Through Responsive Web Design, Sydney Lintner, Douglas Stahlnecker
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Citizen science is currently employed in a variety of fields and has been enabling the collection of large swaths of data that would otherwise go uncollected. The Nebraska Watershed Network (NWN) utilizes citizen scientists to perform water tests, and currently, the results are written on postcards and then mailed to the NWN. We believe that using the proper technological tools will enhance the citizen scientist experience and the data collection process. We have developed a database and web application for the NWN that will allow citizen scientists to use their smartphones to enter their results immediately upon completing the tests …
Aware Of What? The Structure And Meaning Of Gender Aware And Blind Ideologies Across Gender And Race, Abigail M. Folberg
Aware Of What? The Structure And Meaning Of Gender Aware And Blind Ideologies Across Gender And Race, Abigail M. Folberg
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Aware and blind ideologies concerning race (i.e., multiculturalism and colorblindness) have received considerable attention. However, few studies have assessed parallel ideologies about gender, gender awareness (GA) and gender blindness (GB). We examined the relationships of GA/GB to benevolent (BS) and hostile (HS) sexism and assessed the factor structure and measurement invariance of GA and GB across gender and race. Evaluation of the GA/GB measure indicated the presence of two factors (GA and GB) that were invariant across gender and race. Further analyses indicated that greater GA was associated with HS but not GB, whereas greater GB was positively associated with …
Why Arriving Late To Meetings May Harm Workplace Relationships, Joseph Mroz, Nicole B. Lanowski
Why Arriving Late To Meetings May Harm Workplace Relationships, Joseph Mroz, Nicole B. Lanowski
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Individuals often attend meetings at work to which at least one person arrives late. Building from attributional theories of interpersonal behavior, we conducted an experiment to determine the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of people’s reactions to meeting lateness. Participants read one of eight experimental vignettes that described someone arriving 5 or 15 mins late to an important or unimportant meeting, after which the person who arrived late offered either a controllable or an uncontrollable reason for being late. Participants reported greater anger and a willingness to punish the late arrival who gave a controllable excuse, whereas sympathy and pro-social …
Volunteer Attrition: Reducing Incivility Among Coworkers, Sheridan Trent
Volunteer Attrition: Reducing Incivility Among Coworkers, Sheridan Trent
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Although volunteers are vital to the success of many organizations, the rate of volunteerism in the US has been decreasing since 2002 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). One reason volunteers leave organizations is due to feeling burnt out from volunteer work (Chen & Yu, 2014; Winefield, Xanthopolou, & Metzer, 2012). Although multiple factors have been found to induce burnout in volunteers, studies examining relationships among volunteer coworkers as a potential stressor are sorely lacking. The current study sought to examine coworker incivility as a predictor of volunteer burnout and turnover intentions using Conservation of Resources (COR) theory. COR theory postulates …
Access, Achievement, And Academic Resilience: The Relationship Between Avid And Black Student Participation In Advanced Placement Courses, Jemimah Lea Young
Access, Achievement, And Academic Resilience: The Relationship Between Avid And Black Student Participation In Advanced Placement Courses, Jemimah Lea Young
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the AVID program and Black student Advanced Placement (AP) participation. Academic resilience was operationally defined in this study as the ability of a student to successfully complete advanced placement or international baccalaureate courses despite academic risk factors. This study hypothesized that a relationship exists between the participation of Black students in the AVID program and AP course completion. The participants were 9th grade Black students (N = 2,267) that participated in the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009/2012 (HSLS:09/12). To test the hypothesis of an association between AVID membership …

Big Data And The Future Of Travel Modeling, Greg Macfarlane
Big Data And The Future Of Travel Modeling, Greg Macfarlane
PSU Transportation Seminars
New technologies such as smart phones and web applications constantly collect data on individuals' trip-making and travel patterns. Efforts at using these "Big data" products, to date, have focused on using them to expand or inform traditional travel demand modeling frameworks; however, it is worth considering if a new framework built to maximize the strengths of big data would be more useful to policy makers and planners.
In this presentation Greg Macfarlane will present a discussion on elements of travel models that could quickly benefit from big data and concurrent machine learning techniques, and results from a preliminary application of …

Assessing Retirement Needs And Interest In Myra: Findings From The Refund To Savings Initiative, Stephen P. Roll, Jane E. Oliphant, Dana C. Perantie, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Genevieve Davison
Center for Social Development Research
As part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s ongoing effort to promote the myRA starter retirement account, we used the Refund to Savings Initiative’s Household Financial Survey to assess low- to moderate-income tax filers’ retirement needs, attitudes towards retirement, and interest in a myRA-type account. We also tested different messaging approaches for promoting myRA. The report found that 32% of survey respondents did not own a retirement account and that lack of money and lack of access to an employer-based account were major impediments to retirement account ownership. The report also found that only 10% to 15% of respondents …
Scape Goats, Silver Bullets, And Other Pitfalls In The Path To Sustainability, D. G. Webster
Scape Goats, Silver Bullets, And Other Pitfalls In The Path To Sustainability, D. G. Webster
Dartmouth Scholarship
This paper draws from The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula Le Guin to highlight some of the most likely pitfalls on the political road to a sustainable planet. Through the literary device of dreams that can change the world, Le Guin explores how the individual’s egoistic desire to save humanity can be twisted by the limitations of our psyche and our society, turning an already uncomfortable future Earth into a devastated planet. It is a stinging critique of answers handed down from above, and a call to action for those of us who just get by here below. Her story …

Throughout the history of Mexico, the country's gradual involvement with capitalism has given rise to different eras of profound economic change which have consequently generated a variety of influences implicating changes in Mexican sociocultural identity. This work investigates two specific eras of novel capitalist engagement to determine the relationship between these economic changes and the evolution of Mexican identity using the urban environment of Mexico City as the socio-spatial center. The sociocultural effects of Mexico's post-revolutionary era of economic development from the 1940s to the 1960s will first be explored, followed by an investigation of the post-NAFTA / WTO era …

It consisted largely of teach-ins designed to start conversations, and hopefully it will the first of many events that bring people together to think more carefully about how we should respond to things going on outside of our college and town. Where Are The Women? An Analysis Of Gender Mainstreaming In Introductory Political Science Textbooks, Amy Atchison
Where Are The Women? An Analysis Of Gender Mainstreaming In Introductory Political Science Textbooks, Amy Atchison
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Publications
Textbook content is a powerful indicator of what is and is not considered important in a given discipline. Textbooks shape both curriculum and students’ thinking about a subject. The extant literature indicates that gender is not well represented in American government textbooks, thus signaling to students that women and gender are not part of the mainstream in political science. I contribute to this literature by using quantitative and qualitative content analysis to examine gender mainstreaming in 10 introductory political science textbooks. I find that the quantity of gendered content is small, and the quality of that content varies considerably from …
