Do No Harm: The Challenge Of Protecting Civilians From The Ied Threat In South-Central Somalia, Abigail Jones
Do No Harm: The Challenge Of Protecting Civilians From The Ied Threat In South-Central Somalia, Abigail Jones
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
In many countries, improvised explosive devices (IED), including improvised landmines, now constitute more of a threat to civilians than factory-manufactured landmines and other conventional weapons. The Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor 2016 reported that the total number of casualties from victim-operated IEDs, which act in a similar manner to anti-personnel mines, increased from 1,075 in 2014 to 1,331 in 2015, the highest annual total of IED casualties recorded since 1999. In response to this, humanitarian mine action organizations are expanding their scope of activities to include IED awareness for civilians either as a stand-alone activity or by integrating messages on …
The Early Years Of Demining In Bosnia And Herzegovina: Transfer To National Ownership, Ian Mansfield
The Early Years Of Demining In Bosnia And Herzegovina: Transfer To National Ownership, Ian Mansfield
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
After the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords on 14 December 1995, the newly formed Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina requested that the United Nations set up and manage a mine clearance program. However, it soon became clear that the government should take responsibility and ownership of the program.
The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina took place between April 1992 and October 1995. While the causes of the war and what happened are extremely complicated, Bosnian Serbs encircled Sarajevo and imposed a blockade, while ‘ethnic cleansing’ operations were undertaken by all sides in towns and villages throughout …

World War Ii Coastal Minefields In The United Kingdom, Roly Evans
World War Ii Coastal Minefields In The United Kingdom, Roly Evans
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
While not widely appreciated today, there were once 1,997 minefields in the United Kingdom containing between 338,500–350,000 landmines. If you were to walk today on a beach suitable for amphibious landing on either the south or east coasts of the United Kingdom, chances are that you would be walking on a former 1940s minefield. This article briefly explores the story of the United Kingdom’s coastal minefields, from their hasty installation through their costly clearance. Many of the lessons from this period remain relevant today, as countries seek to apply land release principles to reduce the risk of explosive contamination to …
Developing A Hyperspectral Non-Technical Survey For Minefields Via Uav And Helicopter, Milan Bajic, Tamara Ivelja, Anna Brook
Developing A Hyperspectral Non-Technical Survey For Minefields Via Uav And Helicopter, Milan Bajic, Tamara Ivelja, Anna Brook
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The main topic discussed in this paper is the research, development, and implementation of hyperspectral remote sensing technology in humanitarian mine action (HMA), mainly for non-technical survey (NTS) from aerial platforms. NTS should be conducted to determine whether landmines or unexploded ordnance (UXO) exist in considered areas and whether clearance is needed and if so, in what scope. The availability of the hyperspectral sensors (2011–2012) that are suitable for use with multi-engine unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enabled the development of systems for HMA. While large and costly airborne hyperspectral systems have been available for over two decades, they had little …

The Roles Of Activism And Citizen Science In The Area Covered By The East Gippsland Regional Forest Agreement, Ian Corbet
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
For this Independent Study Project, I have examined the roles of activism and citizen science under the East Gippsland Regional Forestry Act. I conducted the study in the hopes of understanding better how activists have contributed to the overall conservation of the forests of East Gippsland. As the government has recently extended the twenty year agreement for another year, I wanted to determine if the real stakeholders of the conservation movement were taken into account. I sought the perspectives of people involved in the either the administration, implementation or opposition to the RFA. This ended up being eight people in …
An Analysis Of Positive Coping Mechanisms Utilized To Overcome Trauma In Post-Genocidal Rwanda, Danielle Marvin
An Analysis Of Positive Coping Mechanisms Utilized To Overcome Trauma In Post-Genocidal Rwanda, Danielle Marvin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
From April 7th to July 1st of 1994, one million Rwandan people were brutally murdered by their friends and neighbors in the meticulously planned and government-sponsored Genocide against the Tutsi. Survivors witnessed killings and sexual assault, had their lives threatened, lost multiple family members, and hid under dead bodies to evade the killers. To make matters worse, trust within communities and even within families was destroyed as Hutu perpetrators turned against Tutsis they had, days earlier, been inviting to family events. After the genocide, PTSD rates among adults in Rwanda were estimated at 20.5% for men and 30% for women …
Czech Artivism: The Function Of Activist Art In Czech Political Culture, Kristen Fontaine
Czech Artivism: The Function Of Activist Art In Czech Political Culture, Kristen Fontaine
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research endeavors to explore the ways in which activist art functions within the context of the Czech Republic’s political culture. In a society where art had such a significant influence during the transition to democracy, the activist role of art is emphasized minimally in terms of contemporary culture. The main objective of exploring this function results in a threetiered methodology, utilizing secondary sources, direct observation, and interviews with activist artists themselves. The relevant scholarly literature discusses activist art both in the general sense, as well as within the context of post-communist countries. However, individual interviews with local activist artists …

The Maine Chance: Private-Public Partnership And The Katahdin Woods And Waters National Monument, Char Miller
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
The claim of a federal “land grab” in response to the creation of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine revealed a lack of historical awareness by critics of how two other cherished parks were established there: through private-public partnerships and the donation of land by private citizens.

Composing Focus: Shaping Temporal, Social, Media, Social Media, And Attentional Environments, Jane Fife
English Faculty Publications
Writers must learn to control factors that influence the ability to focus, especially in what some call a culture of distraction. In our efforts to promote metacognition and flexible writing processes, writing teachers need to engage students in study and discussion of factors in our temporal, social, media, social media, and attentional environments that influence focus while composing. This article examines these facets of our contemporary scenes of writing by reviewing recent research in composition studies and psychology about writing and attention, discussing the results of a survey of undergraduate writers’ composing practices, and sharing insights from assignments that help …
Interactions Between United States (Vix) And United Kingdom (Vftse) Market Volatility: A Time Series Study, Jacob Friar
Interactions Between United States (Vix) And United Kingdom (Vftse) Market Volatility: A Time Series Study, Jacob Friar
WCBT Undergraduate Publications
Financial markets have become increasingly more dependent on calculated measures of volatility. Many of the leading economies have developed their own indices that reflect the expectations of market volatility, including the United States (VIX) and the United Kingdom (VFTSE). This study uses these two indices in particular to conduct a time series analysis as a means to identifying potential relationships between the value of the VIX and VFTSE, over time. The analysis concludes that there is a two-way relationship between the indices, and therefore the VAR Model was implemented. Further evaluation of the impulses reveals that while values of each …

Pay For Performance: What Type Of Pay Scheme Is Best For Achieving Business Results?, Fermin Augusto Diez
Pay For Performance: What Type Of Pay Scheme Is Best For Achieving Business Results?, Fermin Augusto Diez
Dissertations and Theses Collection
Much has been written, for and against, about compensation as a driver of performance. Two main theoretical constructs deal with this subject: extrinsic theory, including agency theory, whereby money is a main motivator to performance, and intrinsic theory which proposes that money does not motivate, and in fact may hinder, performance. However, corporations spend considerable effort in designing compensation packages with the objective of linking remuneration to performance. Practitioners have developed a variety of mechanisms to deliver pay packages, but heretofore there has been no attempt to validate which, if any, of these various approaches is better able to drive …

Giving Poems: Motivation And Personality In The Reading And Sharing Of Poetry, Leeann Bartolini
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Most of the psychological work on poetry has investigated the poet (Mason, Mort, Woo, 2015; Jamison, 1989) or the expressive act of writing poetry (Fink & Drake, 2016, Coulehan & Clary, 2005). The National Poetry Foundation commissioned a study in 2006 that examined the general habits of the American public in terms of reading and sharing poetry. This survey found:14% of American population reads poetry.Readers in general and poetry readers in particular tend to be women with higher level of education.Poetry readers are not loners – high amounts of leisure activity and high sociability.Poetry readers tend to have read poetry …

Parental Communication Of Responsiveness And Control As Predictors Of Adolescents' Emotional And Behavioral Resilience In Families With Alcoholic Versus Nonalcoholic Parents, Marie Haverfield, Jennifer Theiss
Parental Communication Of Responsiveness And Control As Predictors Of Adolescents' Emotional And Behavioral Resilience In Families With Alcoholic Versus Nonalcoholic Parents, Marie Haverfield, Jennifer Theiss
Faculty Publications
Interactions between parents and children establish norms for managing emotions and behavior, which are markers of resilience. This study examines how features of interpersonal communication between parents and children facilitate the resilience of children of alcoholic parents versus nonalcoholic parents. Parent–adolescent dyads (30 families of alcoholics, 30 families of nonalcoholics) were invited to participate in two videotaped interactions, which were then rated for parental responsiveness and control and adolescent emotion regulation and behavioral impulsivity. Parental responsiveness was positively associated with emotion regulation, and parental control was negatively associated with emotion regulation and positively associated with impulsivity. Moderation analyses point to …

Forest Inventory Data, Izaya Numata, Mark Cochrane, Jeppe Kjaersgaard, Sonaira Souza Da Silva
Drought in Amazonia Data Sets
Forest inventory was conducted in Acre, the southwestern Amazon, in July-August in 2014. Field data was collected in four fragmented forest areas. In addition, this forest inventory includes data in forest areas burned in 2005 and 2010 and unburned forest areas. Forest inventory includes information on vegetation species and stem diameter at breast height (DBH) at each plot of 25m x 25m. All trees with DBH ≥ 10cm were measured at 25m x 25m plots and those with DBH< 10cm and lianas were measured at 10m x 10m and 5m x 5m subplots within each 25m x 25m plot.

Looking For Answers: A Usability Study Of Online Finding Aid Navigation, Rachel Walton
Faculty Publications
In a practical and user-centered model for online archival description, what navigational features are effective, efficient, and user-valued components for an academic archives’ online finding aid? Using Princeton University’s finding aid website as a prototype, this research study collected quantitative as well as qualitative data from 10 relatively inexperienced online finding aid users as they interacted with and reacted to the finding aid interface. Major navigational difficulties experienced by users included ambiguous and/or unintuitive labeling, unclear relationships between tabs, and insufficient visual cues for certain navigational features. In contrast, user-valued navigational aids included centralized hyperlinked content, nested and hierarchical content …

Speaking As (Significant) Othered, Amy Arellano, Christina L. Ivey
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
Amy and Christina sat together in their living room. Amy held her phone, scrolling through notes she had typed a few minutes before their meeting. Christina’s laptop lay open in front of her.
“How do we start this?” Amy asks. “Do we need an abstract?”
Christina smirks, “I don’t know if we need it right now. Even if we do, I never start by writing the abstract.”
“Then how do we start?” Amy asks again, anxiously.
“I think we can begin with what we bring to the table for this conversation about queer autoethnography: We are a queer couple in …

Images Of Europeans: Transnational Trust And Support For European Integration, Gaspare Genna
Selected Works Temporary Series
Prior research on citizen support for European integration does not consider the influenceof individuals’ evaluations of European nationalities. The model developed in this articleargues that individuals harbour images regarding other European nationalities. Theseimages, which are tied to the economic development of the nationalities’ country, influencetransnational trust (the general trust that individuals put in another nationality).Transnational trust explains support for integration, for it facilitates cooperation amongdiverse groups. As a result, the overall transnational trust is important in explaining supportfor integration. In addition, trust in nationalities from poorer countries has a strongerimpact on support than trust in nationalities from wealthier countries. This …

46 Who Uses Social Networking Sites? Exploring Associations among Personality and the Relationship with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram Chantal Martinez: McNair Scholar Dr. Kim Hardy and Dr. Charles Honts: Mentors Psychology Abstract Social network sites are attracting the attention of numerous researchers. Recently, several studies have examined how people are forming identities on social networking sites. Therefore, greater levels of variable specification are required to further the research on this topic. Testing the relationships among key variables is important when trying to understand these online social forums. Although there has been a rapid growth in the use of Facebook, Twitter, …

Presenting complex data to an audience which is unfamiliar with the intricacies of data acquisition and management is a challenge for many professionals. Education faculty and staff are no different. Staff at Bucknell University library were approached in 2015 by a faculty member from the economics department for assistance with a class on economic history. The syllabus called for the class to analyze and map the development of the 2016 presidential campaign. Through the course of this project data was gathered from multiple sources, including the American Community Survey. Tools such as ArcGIS, R, and the American FactFinder were integrated …
