Fostering Parasocial Relationships With Celebrities On Social Media: Implications For Celebrity Endorsement, Siyoung Chung, Hichang Cho

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

The purpose of this study was to explore the underlying mechanisms through which the use of social media affects endorser effectiveness. Based on theories related to parasocial relationships,self-disclosure, and celebrity endorsement, this study proposed a theoretical research model and empirically tested the model using online survey data collected from 400 Korean Wave fans in Singapore. The results showed that consumers’ parasocial interactions with celebrities though social media have a positive impact on celebrity endorsement. Specifically, we found that: (1) parasocial relationships mediated the relationships between social media interactions and source trustworthiness, (2) social media interactions influenced parasocial relationships via self-disclosure;and …

During our visit in Haiti in January 2017, we conducted basic water quality testing using a YSI meter and an urban water testing kit. We performed multiple tests in a pond that is used for drinking, laundry, bathing, and watering animals in the remote mountain village of Mahotiere, located in the city of Thomazeau.

Further lab analysis of the samples includes:

Atomic absorbance spectroscopy of the Copper content of the plant material found growing along the edge of the pond

X Ray Fluorescence analysis of the sediment from pond using the bench top method (Thermo Niton XL3T), after the sediment …

Social Workers’ Experiences Using Self-Advocacy On The Job, Jessica Labbe Apr 2017

Social Workers’ Experiences Using Self-Advocacy On The Job, Jessica Labbe

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

While many social workers spend the bulk of their days helping their clients learn how to advocate, research shows that social workers often do not advocate for their own rights and well-being at work. The qualitative research that exists focuses primarily on social workers in urban areas who work in child protective services and residential treatment centers. In this study, licensed Master’s-level social workers (either LMSW-CCs or LCSWs) in Maine were asked about their experiences of using self-advocacy on the job.

Investigating Preferences For Patriarchal Values Among Muslim University Students In Southern Thailand, Mahsoom Sateemae, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Suhaimee Sateemae

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Recent research on Muslim populations has offered interesting but limited insights about values preferences. This mixed-methods study examines the prevalence of support for patriarchy among a sample of religious Muslim university students in Southern Thailand using items from the World Values Survey. It also investigates the durability of these preferences by examining correlations between support or opposition to patriarchal values with preferences towards courtship practices, and elements that influence respondents’ views on gender roles, particularly related to the contemporary socioeconomic and political situation facing the Muslim minority of Southern Thailand.

Determinants Of Housing Prices In Micropolitan Areas, Steven Beets Apr 2017

Determinants Of Housing Prices In Micropolitan Areas, Steven Beets

Paper and Posters Presentations

Housing costs are the most significant costs for the average household budget and have significant implications for quality of life and standard of living. Most studies on determinants of housing costs have been on metropolitan ar- eas. Micropolitan areas were first classified in 2003 by the Office of Management and Budget and are defined as having at least one urban cluster with a population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000. Micropolitan areas are therefore a new classification of urban areas and there have not been many studies on the cost of housing in micropolitan areas. This paper examines …

Determinants Of Crime In Micropolitan Areas, Blake Barto Apr 2017

Determinants Of Crime In Micropolitan Areas, Blake Barto

Paper and Posters Presentations

Most cities and populated areas have crime related problems. Crimes have bad social and economic consequences and are very costly for society. This paper analyzes the determinants of crime in micropolitan areas. The Office of Management and Budget first defined micropolitan areas in 2003. Since the classification of micropolitan areas is fairly recent then most studies on the determinants of crime in the economic literature have been on metropolitan areas. There is therefore a wide gap in the knowledge on determinant of crimes between metropolitan areas and micropolitan areas. The contribution of this paper to the economic literature is to …

Transportation Engineering: Traffic Control Simulator, Sarah V. Hernandez, Karla Diaz-Corro, Taslima Akter, Magdalena Asborno, Fu Durandal

Civil Engineering Teaching and Learning

The purpose of these lesson plans is to introduce students to traffic signalization basics. Students will be lead through a series of mini-lectures on traffic control and signalization including a discussion on the limitations and benefits of traffic signalization. The lesson plans compliment a computer simulation “game” in which students act as manual operators for a single up to four by four gridded intersection. Students attempt to control the progression of signals to understand the relationship between signal timing and user delay. Through experimentation with the simulation, students generate a presentation discussing the benefits and drawbacks of signal timing and …

Challenging The Stereotype – Greek Life In The Media, Briana Trifiro

Honors Projects in Communication

Stereotypes are an undeniable aspect of today’s society. As demonstrated through a variety of mass communication theories, stereotypes are often formed as a result of exposure to mass media images. This concept is especially important today, as media messages permeate daily life in a variety of ways. From the news, to social media, to movies and television – media messaging is everywhere and impacts people on a daily basis. The purpose of this study is to produce a documentary video which demonstrates how negative media portrayals of Greek life lead to the formulation of stereotypes about college students affiliated with …

Self-Presentation Of Male And Female Athletes On Instagram: A Continuation Of Gender Roles Found In Advertisements?, Kelsey Gainor

Honors Projects in Communication

Social media has brought with it a closing of the relational distance between players and fans; athletes have an important decision to make about the way they want to be viewed, not only as athletes, but also in the many other facets of their lives, such as being a parent, friend or role model. By applying the differing gender expectations for males versus females to an athletic context, this research study aims to gain a better understanding of how these gender expectations for male versus female professional athletes are exhibited through self-presentation on social media, specifically Instagram. The athletes’ own …

Weak-Kneed Media And Festering Corruption In Nigeria, Musibau Olabamiji Oyebode Ph.D. Apr 2017

Weak-Kneed Media And Festering Corruption In Nigeria, Musibau Olabamiji Oyebode Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Characteristic greed, kleptomaniac behavior, and the impunity of Nigerian elites have become enemies of democratic growth in Nigeria. Corruption in Nigeria has become an issue of concern to scholarship. All domestic and international institutions, as well as legal frameworks put in place to check corruption continue to fail to yield measurable results. Festering corruption brings to the forefront the roles of the media in combating the menace. Using Down’s ‘issue-attention cycle’ as the theoretical lens, this paper undertakes an examination of critical discourse of Nigerian media handling of corruption cases. This discourse analysis is backed up with the scholarly interpretation …

On Pathways That Changed Myanmar: A Précis, Matthew Mullen Ph.D. Apr 2017

On Pathways That Changed Myanmar: A Précis, Matthew Mullen Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Change in Myanmar came from above, below, within, abroad, and the fore. This précis of Pathways That Changed Myanmar explains how a multidimensional understanding of change in Myanmar can help to explain the military junta’s decision to move towards a pacted transition. Subversion and creation at the grassroots level transformed the distribution of opportunities, leverage, power, incentives, and influences, as did the global effort to name, shame, and sanction the regime. Decades of contention from the National League for Democracy and many ethnic political groups, in combination with the impact of the Third Force, a network that sought to engage …

Deconstructing Internationalization: Advocating Glocalization In International Higher Education, Fay Patel Ph.D. Apr 2017

Deconstructing Internationalization: Advocating Glocalization In International Higher Education, Fay Patel Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Internationalization has become more than a buzz word in recent years. It has become a leading investment, generating substantial revenues, and is regarded as an imperative in its kinship to branding and rankings in international higher education. The author deconstructs internationalization as a western hegemonic perspective and advocates instead glocalization in international higher education. Glocalization focuses on enhancing the quality of learning for local and global learner cohorts through mutual understanding and shared values at a deep level of academic and social engagement. Following a literature review, the romanticized notion of internationalization is deconstructed to expose the inherent development communication …

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

As we endeavor to make The Journal a forum of information and ideas for the conventional weapons destruction community, we look at the threat improvised explosive devices (IED) pose in countries around the world. Increasingly, humanitarian organizations are widening their scope to account for the prevalence of IEDs. The need for clear communication across humanitarian mine action and counter-IED (C-IED) operational lines is evident.

Improvised Explosive Devices (Ied): A Humanitarian Mine Action Perspective, Robert Keeley Apr 2017

Improvised Explosive Devices (Ied): A Humanitarian Mine Action Perspective, Robert Keeley

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Readers of this Journal need no schooling in the acceleration of the use of improvised explosive devices (IED) over the last 20 years. However, what has become obvious in the last few years is the degree to which the spheres of counter-IED (C-IED) and humanitarian mine action (HMA) now overlap. Danish Demining Group (DDG), for example, recently calculated that an estimated 67 percent of the countries where DDG is present also have an IED problem. In countries such as Afghanistan, IEDs are now the major cause of explosive-related casualties among the general population, the very constituents nongovernment organizations (NGO) and …

Mag: Clearing Improvised Landmines In Iraq, Chris Loughran, Sean Sutton

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

MAG’s recent experience in the Middle East has shown that clearing improvised landmines can be achieved even in the most complex humanitarian contexts. It is imperative that detail and specificity is given to discussions on improvised devices if we are to avoid negative repercussions for the safety of beneficiaries and humanitarian workers.

Public, Private, And Civil Sector Partnerships Bolster Humanitarian Demining Efforts, Bob Ebberson, Wendy Hart Apr 2017

Public, Private, And Civil Sector Partnerships Bolster Humanitarian Demining Efforts, Bob Ebberson, Wendy Hart

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Schonstedt Instrument Company is a small manufacturing company located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, about 70 miles (112 km) from Washington, D.C. Schonstedt makes instruments that locate underground objects. These include pipe, cable, and magnetic locators that find and trace underground utilities and ferrous metals such as boundary markers used by surveyors. Magnetic locators have proven to be successful in locating unexploded ordnance (UXO) and other explosive remnants of war (ERW). In looking for ways to grow this market, Schonstedt recognized an opportunity to support humanitarian demining throughout the world. Determining that the sale of a pipe and …
