Jennifer Thomson, assistant professor of History at Bucknell University, interviews Dave Sprout of the Lewisburg Prison Project. Thomson and Sprout follow up on their March 2015 discussion about the use of force in the Special Management Unit (SMU) of the United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg. Sprout discusses the futility of the program, which involves the lock down of men without any activities or opportunities to engage with the world around them. He describes conditions and raises concern about the psychological impact of punitive social control.

Librarians across library types and departments frequently provide training materials to each other, library technicians, and student workers. For these materials to be effective, they must contain accurate information and should also follow guidelines for usable document design. Good design makes documents easier to use, helps documents stand out from other pieces of information, and lends credibility to document creators. A few simple tips, such as following Gestalt principles and using plain language, can improve document usability. Last night as a couple of my friends scrambled to find a classroom to do work in, they came across a poster that has been plastered all around campus for weeks now. This poster, however, was different. This poster was vandalized. The face of this year’s 10th Annual Derrick K. Gondwe Memorial Lecture, Opal Tometi, had been ripped off and the word “Black” was crossed out and replaced with the word “All.” This changed the quote from “Black Lives Matter” to “All Lives Matter.” [excerpt]

Estimating the causal effects of complex, multi-component health interventions is a task with many challenges in measurement and methodology. This presentation profiles the methods being used as part of the PCORI-funded Project Achieve, a national study to estimate the comparative effectiveness of heterogeneous care transition programs designed to help hospitalized patients and their caregivers navigate care delivery systems effectively and return back to the community with optimal health and wellbeing.

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

This article presents the results of a project to develop a process whereby the sermon would be enhanced for listeners at the North Street Church of Christ in Nacogdoches, Texas, so that preaching would be more effective in leading to transformation. The theology and methodology of John Wesley were utilized as a lens by which to think about and implement this practice.

Natural scenes provide important affective cues for observers to avoid danger. From an adaptationist perspective, such cues affect the behavior of the observer and shape the evolution of the observer’s response. It is evolutionarily significant for individuals to extract affective information from the environment as quickly and as efficiently as possible. However, the nearly endless variations in physical appearance of natural scenes present a fundamental challenge for perceiving significant visual information. How image-level properties, such as contrast and color, influence the extraction of affective information leading to subjective emotional perception is unclear. This paper looks at the effectiveness of the messages distributed by Anti-Human Trafficking Non-Profit Organizations, from the perspective of the individual Non-Profit Organizations themselves. Anti-Human Trafficking messages are disseminated to the public by non-profit organizations on a daily basis, but are constantly ignored. This paper tries to determine why. Research suggests that Non-Profit Organizations use either fear appeal or a call-to-action when creating and distributing their messages, and the goal of the study conducted was to determine the effectiveness of those messages from the perspectives of those who create the messages. Using tax abatements, financial incentives, and public investments to attract (or retain) firms is the primary economic development tool for many local governments. Often local job creation policies focus on increasing capital through grants, low-interest financing, and other economic development incentives. Theory predicts that capital subsidies induce firm behaviors that limit their job creation effects. This paper employs the Incentives Environment Index, constructed from state constitutional provisions that limit and structure the ability of state and local governmental entities to aid private enterprises, and five-year county panels to test theoretical predictions on county capital expenditure and input mixes as well …

In all 7916 papers were identified on “Facebook Research” from Scopus database covering 10 years period 2005-14. The study analyzed growth of publication data and its distribution by documents type, country of publication, authors, their organizations, and subjects. The study identified most productive countries, organization, authors in Facebook research and determined their global publication share, average productivity and comparative citation impact.
