On Oct. 07, 2015, former President Thomas Kunkel, author of Man in Profile: Joseph Mitchell of the New Yorker (Random House, 2015) and President of St. Norbert College, joined Gay Talese, journalist at Columbia University for an event called “Joseph Mitchell and the City: A Conversation with Thomas Kunkel and Gay Talese.” The two, joined by Steve Coll, staff writer at The New Yorker and Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, discussed Joseph Mitchell and his status as an “icon of New York history”.

UNLABELLED: The visual and haptic perceptual systems are understood to share a common neural representation of object shape. A region thought to be critical for recognizing visual and haptic shape information is the lateral occipital complex (LOC). We investigated whether LOC is essential for haptic shape recognition in humans by studying behavioral responses and brain activation for haptically explored objects in a patient (M.C.) with bilateral lesions of the occipitotemporal cortex, including LOC. Despite severe deficits in recognizing objects using vision, M.C. was able to accurately recognize objects via touch. M.C.'s psychophysical response profile to haptically explored shapes was also …

Drawing on the research presented by contributors to this special issue, this article assesses the analytic opportunities that emerge when the Arab uprisings are conceptualized as moments of transformation rather than as incipient, awed or failed transitions to democracy. The Georgia Knowledge Repository (GKR), an initiative of GALILEO, is a central repository that contains academic and intellectual works produced by Georgia colleges and universities. Established in 2013 and comprised of over 100,000 item records, GKR increases the importance of open access scholarly communication and joins a growing number of academic digital repositories. Colleges and universities are developing research seminars, open access journals, and other scholarly initiatives on campus. Libraries who manage their institutional repository are collaborating with campus departments to preserve the scholarly works of these initiatives. Making A First-Year Experience Course Ipad Intensive: A Cautionary Tale, Ruth L. Baker

This presentation tells the story of an experiment to make a First-Year Experience (FYE) course more engaging and enjoyable through the integration of iPads into the curriculum and the infusion of information-literacy throughout the course. Students analyzed 4 films from classic horror cinema and created cultural-historical documentaries about them. Students worked in groups of 4 or 5 on iPads using the Adobe Voice app and learned how to locate and evaluate sources, incorporate sources into their projects, and cite them properly. An exemplary documentary will be screened for the audience.

The Levin College of Urban Affairs has been the evaluation partner for the Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Prevention Program (CCFPP) since the program was adopted in 2006. This report is an update to the County for 2014. The evaluation provides metrics to track progress and provides feedback about the program that can be used to improve and adapt it to meet the rapidly changing state and national context surrounding foreclosures.

Since consistent tracking began in 2009, the Cuyahoga County foreclosure prevention program has served a total of 23,002 homeowners at the five participating counseling agencies. In 2014 alone, 2,751 households were …

Spatial Interaction Of Renewable Portfolio Standards And Their Effect On Renewable Generation Within Nerc Regions, Eric Dowden, Donald J. Lacombe

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

While several studies have examined the effectiveness of renewable portfolio standard laws on renewable generation in states, previous literature has not assessed the potential for spatial dependence in these policies. Spatial dependence in the electric grid is likely, considering the connectivity of the electric grid across NERC regions. Using recent spatial panel methods, this paper estimates a number of econometric models to examine the impact of RPS policies when spatial autocorrelation is taken into account. Consistent with previous literature, we find that RPS laws do not have a significant impact on renewable generation within a state. However, we find evidence …

Mediated Relationships: An Ethnography Of Family Law Mediation, Elaina Behounek

In my dissertation, I use multi-ethnographic methods to examine how mediators talk about, manage, and process families going through divorce. I show how a dominant narrative about marriage and the cultural expectations of parenthood provide a framework for mediators to manage the discourse of divorcing parties so assets and care giving can be split 50/50. The dominant P.E.A.C.E. narrative (P=parenting plan, E=equitable distribution, A=alimony, C=child support, E=everything else) restricts available discourse in mediation and guides mediators’ behaviors in ways that homogenize families by providing a linear formula for mediators to follow which results in only certain stories being allowed to …
