Designations Of Poetry In Translations Of Liu Xie's (劉勰) Work On Literary Genres, Ying Liu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Designations of Poetry in Translations of Liu Xie's (劉勰) Work on Literary Genres" Ying Liu discusses how Liu Xie (劉勰 465-521 AD) in his文心雕龍 (Wenxin diaolong) followed the tradition of The Book of Songs (詩經) and synthesized the original concept of sung (genre of classical poetry) in the Book of Songs with some later variations and thus constructed and shaped the notion of the genre sung. Liu analyses translations by selected scholars and explores the subtle nuances between sung and its English counterparts historically including "ode," "panegyric," "eulogy," and "hymn" in …

(Wp 2015-01) Can Ten Do It Better? Impact Of Red Card In The English Premier League, Abdur Chowdhury Mar 2015

(Wp 2015-01) Can Ten Do It Better? Impact Of Red Card In The English Premier League, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

After penalties and goals, red cards are the next most significant event that can impact the outcome of a soccer (football) game. Using data from the English Premier League, this paper statistically analyzes the impact of whether a sending-off of a player actually turns out to be a punishment for the penalized team, or if - as a popular soccer myth states – penalized teams perform better than they would have performed, had they not received a red card. The results show that the sending-offs negatively affect the performance of the penalized team, no matter when the sending-off occurs. Getting …

(Wp 2015-02) Is Unemployment Good For The Environment?, Andrew G. Meyer Mar 2015

(Wp 2015-02) Is Unemployment Good For The Environment?, Andrew G. Meyer

Economics Working Papers

Environmental quality is a public good, potentially impacted by everybody. Individual level pro-environmental behavior affects environmental quality in the aggregate. Therefore, it is important to understand what causes individual’s pro-environmental behaviors to change. We quantify the causal effect of one determinant, unemployment, using an EU-27 population representative Eurobarometer survey. Drawing on results from the theory of the private provision of public goods, and recognizing that unemployment decreases income and the opportunity cost of time, we formulate testable predictions that unemployment will decrease the extent of pro-environmental behaviors that require monetary contributions and increase the extent of pro-environmental behaviors that mainly …

Tasting Life, Fred B. Bryant Mar 2015

Tasting Life, Fred B. Bryant

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In science, as in life, the right moment is of great importance. I started studying social psychology in the mid-1970s. I was dealing with the same topics as my mentors. For example, while preparing my PhD, I studied perceived control and the phenomenon of learned helplessness - these topics were very popular among psychologists at that time. The concept of learned helplessness (which consists in the fact that people become helpless and passive, seeing that they have no control over the effects of their actions) was proposed as a model explaining depression. At the time, I conducted experiments with the …

A Note On Location And The Output Effect Of Ad-Valorem Taxes Under Free Entry Oligopoly, Yeung-Nan Shieh Mar 2015

A Note On Location And The Output Effect Of Ad-Valorem Taxes Under Free Entry Oligopoly, Yeung-Nan Shieh

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the output effect of an ad-valorem tax of undifferentiated oligopolistic firms in the Weber-Moses triangle.  It shows that an increase in the ad-valorem tax will increase each firm’s output but may increase the number of firms and total output of firms if the inverse demand function is linear, concave or not too convex. This result is different from the well-known Tanaka’s result in non-spatial economy. It indicates that oligopolistic firm’s location decision has important influence on the output effect of the ad-valorem tax.

Rethinking An Established Information Literacy Program: How Leveraging Assessment Data Can Improve Teaching And Promote Change, Katie Bishop, Eleanor Johnson Mar 2015

Rethinking An Established Information Literacy Program: How Leveraging Assessment Data Can Improve Teaching And Promote Change, Katie Bishop, Eleanor Johnson

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Over the past two decades academic librarians have been exploring the use of assessment to communicate and demonstrate to campus stakeholders the importance of libraries and librarians when it comes to student learning.1 This has not been an easy road. While faculty and librarians are often in agreement that students need certain information literacy skills, they often disagree as to how students should learn these skills and which ones are most important.2 Some of this disconnect may be due to faculty and librarians not speaking the same language when it comes to information literacy.3 Another difference may be that faculty …

Imagery, Prayer, And Mind Wandering: Kataphatic Prayer, Martha M.O. Duah Mar 2015

Imagery, Prayer, And Mind Wandering: Kataphatic Prayer, Martha M.O. Duah

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

Can having petitioners engage in kataphatic prayer block or at least reduce mind wandering? Mind wandering—reduced attention to external events—during prayer could pose a problem for Christians. However, different types of prayer make different cognitive demands. Kataphatic prayer, a common type of evangelical Christian prayer, makes use of mental imagery in hopes of experiencing God in a richer sense. Because both mind wandering and kataphatic prayer require imagery, tying up imagery resources in kataphatic prayer should block mind wandering thereby improving focus. Participants in this study prayed as they normally do, viewed a visual task, or engaged in kataphatic …

Power Distance In Mormon Culture, Sara Isabel Lee Mar 2015

Power Distance In Mormon Culture, Sara Isabel Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Religion consists of humanity's beliefs, cultural systems, and worldviews of existence (Geertz, 1973). Its function is not merely a system of symbols that people act according to, but also the establishment of powerful, pervasive motivations in the society. This study intends to analyze the connection of religion and culture by using one of Hofstede's cultural dimensions, power distance (the extent of how power is accepted and expected to be distributed in the society). In this analysis, the researcher investigated the PDI (Power Distance Index) within the Utah Mormon culture. Researcher also compared the PDI scoring of Utah Mormon culture to …

The Chosen One: A Q-Method Analysis Of The “€œHarry Potter”€ Phenomenon, Cindy Phippen Mar 2015

The Chosen One: A Q-Method Analysis Of The “€œHarry Potter”€ Phenomenon, Cindy Phippen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how pop culture fandoms are formed, based on five communications theories: Escapism, Mood Management, Parasocial Relationships, Identification, and Social Capital. The researcher examined the Harry Potter fandom specifically because of its global pervasiveness. Using Q Methodology, 47 respondents fell into one of four categories: Relationship Experts, Happy Introverts, Identifying Isolationists, and Isolated Self-regulators. Relationship Experts like Harry Potter because of parasocial relationships with the characters as well as the story's capacity for escapism, and Happy Introverts focus on liking Harry Potter for their own enjoyment (not that of others) and mood management. Identifying Isolationists like Harry Potter …

A Motivational, Online Guide To Help English Language Learners With The Development,Implementation, And Evaluation Of Their Individual Pronunciation Improvement Plans, Sofia Laura Carreno Galdame Mar 2015

A Motivational, Online Guide To Help English Language Learners With The Development,Implementation, And Evaluation Of Their Individual Pronunciation Improvement Plans, Sofia Laura Carreno Galdame

Theses and Dissertations

Intelligibility is one of the major concerns among ESL learners due to its impact on their ability to communicate with native speakers of English (Derwing & Munro, 2005). Even though pronunciation is often addressed in classrooms, it is difficult to tackle all intelligibility issues relevant for each student. Therefore, it is crucial for ESL learners to spend some extra time outside of class improving their pronunciation. Faced with a daunting task of regulating and taking charge of their own learning, they often have questions with respect to what exactly they need to work on, what activities will help them achieve …

Whither The Future Of Internet Streaming And Time-Shifting? Revisiting The Rights Of Reproduction And Communication To The Public In Copyright Law After Aereo, Cheng Lim Saw, Warren B. Chik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

New forms of communication technology often pose challenges to the copyright regime and have necessitated the rewriting of the scope of the exclusive rights and exceptions by the legislature, and, in some cases, by the courts in common law countries (as well as the Court of Justice of the European Union). These issues have arisen in different categories of digital technology, albeit with the same objective of streamlining and simplifying the delivery of copyright works to consumers. These categories include file storage and transfer operations offered by Peer-to-Peer technology, the space- and time-shifting functions of the early video and audio …

Case Comment: Golden Season Pte Ltd And Others V Kairos Singapore Holdings Pte Ltd And Another [2015] Sghc 38, Gary Kok Yew Chan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This 111-page judgement has highlighted a number of significant points of law relating to the treatment of Facebook postings, emails and SMS texts in the tort of defamation. They relate primarily to the legal requirements of establishing defamatory meaning, reference to the plaintiff and defences. In addition, the case examines the awards of general and special damages as well as the viability of awarding aggravated damages to corporate plaintiffs. Apart from the plaintiff’s actions in defamation and malicious falsehood, the defendant successfully counterclaimed for copyright infringement but failed in the action based on passing off. This brief case comment focuses …

Political Connections And Firm Value: Evidence From The Regression Discontinuity Design Of Close Gubernatorial Elections, Quoc-Anh Do, Yen Teik Lee, Bang D. Nguyen Mar 2015

Political Connections And Firm Value: Evidence From The Regression Discontinuity Design Of Close Gubernatorial Elections, Quoc-Anh Do, Yen Teik Lee, Bang D. Nguyen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using the regression discontinuity design of close gubernatorial elections in the U.S., we identify a significant and positive impact of the social networks of corporate directors and politicians on firm value. Firms connected to elected governors increase their value by 3.89%. Political connections are more valuable for firms connected to winning challengers, for smaller and financially dependent firms, in more corrupt states, in states of connected firms’ headquarters and operations, and in closer, smaller, and active networks. Post-election, firms connected to the winner receive significantly more state procurement contracts and invest more than do firms connected to the loser.

Bisphenol-A Exposure During Adolescence Leads To Enduring Alterations In Cognition And Dendritic Spine Density In Adult Male And Female Rats, Rachel E. Bowman, Victoria N. Luine, Samantha Diaz Weinstein, Hameda Khandaker, Sarah Dewolf, Maya Frankfurt Mar 2015

Bisphenol-A Exposure During Adolescence Leads To Enduring Alterations In Cognition And Dendritic Spine Density In Adult Male And Female Rats, Rachel E. Bowman, Victoria N. Luine, Samantha Diaz Weinstein, Hameda Khandaker, Sarah Dewolf, Maya Frankfurt

Psychology Faculty Publications

We have previously demonstrated that adolescent exposure of rats to bisphenol-A (BPA), an environmental endocrine disrupter, increases anxiety, impairs spatial memory, and decreases dendritic spine density in the CA1 region of the hippocampus (CA1) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) when measured in adolescence in both sexes. The present study examined whether the behavioral and morphological alterations following BPA exposure during adolescent development are maintained into adulthood. Male and female, adolescent rats received BPA, 40 μg/kg/bodyweight, or control treatments for one week. In adulthood, subjects were tested for anxiety and locomotor activity, spatial memory, non-spatial visual memory, and sucrose preference. Additionally, …
