Book Review: Ethics Of Media, Edited By Nick Couldry, Mirca Madianou, And Amit Pinchevski., Sue Burzynski Bullard

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Credible media outlets work to maintain their credibility and that invariably leads them to the ethics of the business. Ethics, if converted to a slogan, could be reduced to “do the right thing.” But exactly what is the right thing? How do you know it is the right thing? What exceptions are allowed, if any? How does the digital age affect ethics?

A “How-To” Introduction On Pursuing Arts-Based Fiction Research And Writing As A Methodology: A Review Of Fiction As Research Practice: Short Stories, Novellas, And Novels, Aniuska M. Luna

The Qualitative Report

Research written as fiction can expand the audience pool and reach of knowledge generated in an accessible, familiar and less convoluted format than its more traditional methodological counterparts. Leavy’s (2013) book demonstrates how this is the case. Sh e eases interested researchers into how to plan and execute fiction - based research, and provides examples, useful tips and resources. An issue that is not explored in detail, however, is the advantages for readers of reading texts produced through this met hodology over those produced by fiction writers. This issue aside, Fiction as a research practice: Short stories, novellas, and novels …

Reference Resilience: Balancing Sustainability With Customized And Effective Research Support, Jennifer Adams, Laura Hibbler Mar 2015

Reference Resilience: Balancing Sustainability With Customized And Effective Research Support, Jennifer Adams, Laura Hibbler

Staff publications

As we see fewer "walk-up" questions at the reference desk, our librarians faced difficult questions about how best to focus research support for Holy Cross students. While so-called 'ready-reference' information is now available online, the expanse of information on the Internet combined with the increasing complexity of tools like research databases, pointed to a need for a different kind of research assistance which is more in-depth and focuses on effective search strategies. For many libraries, including ours, this calls for shifting our priorities and hours from traditional time at the reference desk to other, more-personalized activities such as meeting with …

Beyond Beall’S List: Better Understanding Predatory Publishers, Monica Berger, Jill Cirasella Mar 2015

Beyond Beall’S List: Better Understanding Predatory Publishers, Monica Berger, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

This article discusses the phenomenon of predatory publishing and examines the benefits and limitations of Jeffrey Beall's blacklist of "potential, possible, or probable" predatory open access (OA) publishers. It also describes the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), a whitelist of scholarly OA journals, and other tools for evaluating open access journals. It concludes by discussing the role of librarians, who must help researchers avoid low-quality journals and also need to counteract the misconceptions and alarmism that stymie the acceptance of OA.

Mountain Monitor - 4th Quarter 2014, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

With the national economy gaining steam, the 10 major metro areas of the Mountain West ended 2014 with another quarter of strong economic performance. On the four indicators of economic vitality measured by the Mountain Monitor—employment growth, output growth, changes in unemployment, and house price growth—with only a few exceptions, every metro area registered advances on every indicator. Such widespread progress heretofore eluded the region, where recovery from the Great Recession has been characterized by unevenness.

In aggregate, the 10 Mountain metro areas ended 2014 with their fastest quarter of job growth of the year. Employment increased by 0.8 …

New Mothers And Social Media: The Effects Of Social Media Consumption And Production On Social Support And Parental Stress, Rachel Clawson Nielsen Mar 2015

New Mothers And Social Media: The Effects Of Social Media Consumption And Production On Social Support And Parental Stress, Rachel Clawson Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

The restructuring of roles, responsibilities, and relationships that occurs during the transition to parenthood brings both rewards and challenges to first-time mothers (Bartholomew, Schoppe-Sullivan, Glassman, Dush, & Sullivan, 2012; Horowitz & Damato, 1999) and is often characterized as a time of parental stress (Crnic & Low, 2002; Deater-Deckard, 1998; Leigh & Milgrom, 2008). To effectively manage this stress, first-time mothers must feel a sense of social support (Crnic, Greenberg, Ragozin, Robinson, & Basham, 1983; Cutrona, 1984; Gao, Chan, & Mao, 2009; McDaniel, Coyne, Holmes, 2012; Nakagawa, Teti, & Lamb, 1992). In today's technology-driven era, this essential sense of support may …

International Comovement Of Economic Fluctuations: A Spatial Analysis, Miao Wang, M. C. Sunny Wong, Jim Granato Mar 2015

International Comovement Of Economic Fluctuations: A Spatial Analysis, Miao Wang, M. C. Sunny Wong, Jim Granato

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

We consider the comovement of economic volatility across multiple countries. Using spatial models with data from 187 countries over the period of 1960–2007, we find a strong spatial comovement of economic volatility. More interestingly, the effect of geographical proximity on economic volatility comovement is strongest during the period of international shocks (1973–86), but almost disappears over the globalization era (1987–2007). By way of contrast, the influence of trade relations in determining the comovement of economic volatility is significant over 1987–2007.

Medicaid Expansions For The Working Age Disabled: Revisiting The Crowd-Out Of Private Health Insurance, Kathryn L. Wagner Mar 2015

Medicaid Expansions For The Working Age Disabled: Revisiting The Crowd-Out Of Private Health Insurance, Kathryn L. Wagner

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Disabled individuals under 65 years old account for 15% of Medicaid recipients but half of all Medicaid spending. Despite their large cost, few studies have investigated the effects of Medicaid expansions for disabled individuals on insurance coverage and crowd-out of private insurance. Using an eligibility expansion that allowed states to provide Medicaid to disabled individuals with incomes less than 100% of the federal poverty level, I address these issues. Crowd-out estimates range from 49% using an ordinary least squares procedure to 100% using two-stage least-squares analysis. This potentially large degree of crowd-out could have fiscal implications for the Affordable Care …

The Implementation Duality, Georg Nöldeke, Larry Samuelson Mar 2015

The Implementation Duality, Georg Nöldeke, Larry Samuelson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Conjugate duality relationships are pervasive in matching and implementation problems and provide much of the structure essential for characterizing stable matches and implementable allocations in models with quasilinear (or transferable) utility. In the absence of quasilinearity, a more abstract duality relationship, known as a Galois connection, takes the role of (generalized) conjugate duality. While weaker, this duality relationship still induces substantial structure. We show that this structure can be used to extend existing results for, and gain new insights into, adverse-selection principal-agent problems and two-sided matching problems without quasilinearity.

Moral Injury And The Military Veteran: Depaul's Multi-Faith Veterans Support Project Mar 2015

Moral Injury And The Military Veteran: Depaul's Multi-Faith Veterans Support Project

DePaul Magazine

Moral injury is gaining recognition as a serious psychological problem that affects some combat veterans. Moral injury, a feeling of inner conflict that arises when actions taken during deployment betray a veteran’s moral beliefs, is seen by many behavioral health professionals as both a spiritual and emotional health problem that presents unique symptoms and challenges. It is also at the center of a new program from DePaul’s Egan Office for Urban Education & Community Partnerships at the Steans Center—the Multi-Faith Veterans Support Project.

Funded by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, the initiative aims to improve the quality of life for …
