Life History Theory And The Sexual Double Standard, Yuliana Zaikman, Amanda Vicary, Faculty Advisor Apr 2012

Life History Theory And The Sexual Double Standard, Yuliana Zaikman, Amanda Vicary, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The present study sought to examine the relationship between the sexual double standard and life history theory. The sexual double standard is the idea that a man is rewarded for sexual behavior, whereas a woman is derogated. Life history theory posits that females who grow up with estranged relationships with their fathers or in divorced households view dating and relationships differently than do other females. To investigate a possible relation between life history theory and the double standard, we had participants report on their interactions with their parents and then rate fictional male or female targets who reported having had …

Factor Analysis Of Intern Effectiveness, Sid T. Womack, Shellie Louise Hannah, Columbus David Bell Apr 2012

Factor Analysis Of Intern Effectiveness, Sid T. Womack, Shellie Louise Hannah, Columbus David Bell

Administrative Issues Journal

Four factors in teaching intern effectiveness, as measured by a Praxis III-similar instrument, were found among observational data of teaching interns during the 2010 spring semester. Those factors were lesson planning, teacher/student reflection, fairness & safe environment, and professionalism/efficacy. This factor analysis was as much of a statement about effective teaching as it is about the technical aspects of an instrument utilized to assess it. Forty-one percent of effective teaching was found to be in the lesson planning.

Binge Eating Disorder Mediates Links Between Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety And Caloric Intake In Obese Women, Roseann E. Peterson, Shawn J. Latendresse, Lindsay T. Bartholome, Cortney S. Warren, Nancy C. Raymond Apr 2012

Binge Eating Disorder Mediates Links Between Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety And Caloric Intake In Obese Women, Roseann E. Peterson, Shawn J. Latendresse, Lindsay T. Bartholome, Cortney S. Warren, Nancy C. Raymond

Psychology Faculty Research

Despite considerable comorbidity between mood disorders, binge eating disorder (BED), and obesity, the underlying mechanisms remain unresolved. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine models by which internalizing behaviors of depression and anxiety influence food intake in overweight/obese women. Thirty-two women (15 BED, 17 controls) participated in a laboratory eating-episode and completed questionnaires assessing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Path analysis was used to test mediation and moderation models to determine the mechanisms by which internalizing symptoms influenced kilocalorie (kcal) intake. The BED group endorsed significantly more symptoms of depression (10.1 versus 4.8, P=0.005 ) and anxiety (8.5 …

Alternative Individual Cartridge Case Identification Techniques, Curtis H. Sedlacek Apr 2012

Alternative Individual Cartridge Case Identification Techniques, Curtis H. Sedlacek

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Individual cartridge case identification is an essential component of historic battlefield archeology. With individual cartridge case identification archeologists are able to track the movement of the combatants as they move across the battlefield, giving a highly detailed view of the past. While useful, current methods of individual cartridge case identification require expensive equipment and extensive training and time to conduct. In this thesis two alternative methods of cartridge case identification are evaluated in order to determine if recent developments in the areas of 3D scanning and statistical analysis can be utilized to develop new methods of individual cartridge case method. …

Alone On A Wide Wide Sea: A National Security Rationale For Joining The Law Of The Sea Convention, James W. Houck Apr 2012

Alone On A Wide Wide Sea: A National Security Rationale For Joining The Law Of The Sea Convention, James W. Houck

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

In the face of twenty-first century challenges to military maritime mobility, the question persists as to whether customary international law will remain a reliable foundation for U.S. maritime security interests in the future. To date, the U.S. has successfully conducted military operations sanctioned by the customary high seas freedoms of free navigation and overflight. However, with technological advances and heightened environmental and defense concerns, countries with coastal state interests may demand greater control over their near-shore waters, requiring the U.S. to reconsider its position outside the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This article addresses pertinent …

Major Difference: An Examination Of Student Writing Performance By Major And Its Implications For Business Communication, Lucia S. Sigmar, Geraldine E. Hynes

Administrative Issues Journal

This study analyzes the writing performance levels of 352 students to determine the extent to which business students are achieving written communication competency and whether differences exist among the business majors. Although most students met or exceeded expectations in format and content on a common writing task, students were weakest in grammar and mechanics, with almost half scoring below expectations across all majors. The findings indicate no statistically significant differences in writing competency among majors. This study also suggests that business communicators can serve as “collegial consultants” in a cross-disciplinary effort to improve student writing.

Copyright Solutions For Institutional Repositories: A Collaboration With Subject Librarians, Heather Leary, Kacy Lundstrom, Pamela Martin

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

This work investigates using subject librarians to conduct copyright clearance in an institutional repository (IR). At Utah State University, the library assures copyright clearance for faculty scholarship, thereby garnering input of faculty scholarship into the IR. Currently, subject librarians are not widely participating in routine IR work; however, the involvement of subject librarians with the IR offers benefits to the subject librarians and the institution as a whole. This article provides a model for institutions needing new solutions for copyright clearance using subject librarians and discusses the rationale, benefits and challenges of adopting this model.

The MSPs must meet the same requirements as other QHPs. As with other QHPs, people enrolled in the plans will be eligible for premium tax credits and cost sharing assistance if their income is less than 400 percent of poverty …
