Cultural Norms Shaping Research Group Interviews With Chinese American Immigrants, Christine Ml Kwan, Kevin M. Chun, Catherine A. Chesla Jan 2011

Cultural Norms Shaping Research Group Interviews With Chinese American Immigrants, Christine Ml Kwan, Kevin M. Chun, Catherine A. Chesla

Psychology

Practical knowledge on how to tailor research methods for Asian Americans is relatively scarce despite the rapid population growth of this ethnic group and the ongoing calls for greater cultural competence among researchers. Based on a 4-year qualitative study of family and cultural issues in diabetes management among Chinese American immigrants, this article presents data-based analyses of culturally nuanced group interview processes, and recommendations for conducting culturally appropriate group interviews. Group interview processes were prominently shaped by 4 cultural norms: sensitivity to social hierarchy, monitoring public display of strong emotions, face concerns, and emphasis on group harmony. Strategies for facilitating …

Types Of Prayer And Depressive Symptoms Among Cancer Patients: The Mediating Role Of Rumination And Social Support, John E. Perez, Amy Rex Smith, Rebecca L. Norris, Katia M. Canenguez, Elizabeth F. Tracey, Susan B. Decristofaro Jan 2011

Types Of Prayer And Depressive Symptoms Among Cancer Patients: The Mediating Role Of Rumination And Social Support, John E. Perez, Amy Rex Smith, Rebecca L. Norris, Katia M. Canenguez, Elizabeth F. Tracey, Susan B. Decristofaro

Psychology

We examined the association between different types of prayer and depressive symptoms—with rumination and social support as potential mediators—in a sample of predominantly White, Christian, and female ambulatory cancer patients. In a cross-sectional design, 179 adult cancer outpatients completed measures of prayer, rumination, social support, depressive symptoms, and demographic variables. Type and stage of cancer were collected from electronic medical charts. Depressive symptoms were negatively correlated with adoration prayer (r = −.15), reception prayer (r = −.17), thanksgiving prayer (r = −.29), and prayer for the well-being of others (r = −.26). In the path analysis, …

Anti-Saccade Performance Predicts Executive Function And Brain Structure In Normal Elders, J. B. Mirsky, H. W. Heuer, A. Jafari, J. H. Kramer, A. K. Schenk, Indre Viskontas, B. L. Miller, A. L. Boxer Jan 2011

Anti-Saccade Performance Predicts Executive Function And Brain Structure In Normal Elders, J. B. Mirsky, H. W. Heuer, A. Jafari, J. H. Kramer, A. K. Schenk, Indre Viskontas, B. L. Miller, A. L. Boxer

Psychology

Objective—To assess the neuropsychological and anatomical correlates of anti-saccade (AS) task performance in normal elders.

Background—The AS task correlates with neuropsychological measures of executive function and frontal lobe volume in neurological diseases, but has not been studied in a well-characterized normal elderly population. Because executive dysfunction can indicate an increased risk for cognitive decline in cognitively normal elders, we hypothesized that AS performance might be a sensitive test of age-related processes that impair cognition.

Method—The percentage of correct AS responses was evaluated in forty-eight normal elderly subjects and compared with neuropsychological test performance using linear regression analysis …

Multimodal Cuing Of Autobiographical Memory In Semantic Dementia, D. L. Greenberg, J. M. Ogar, Indre Viskontas, M. L. Gorno Tempini, B. Miller, B. J. Knowlton Jan 2011

Multimodal Cuing Of Autobiographical Memory In Semantic Dementia, D. L. Greenberg, J. M. Ogar, Indre Viskontas, M. L. Gorno Tempini, B. Miller, B. J. Knowlton

Psychology

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with semantic dementia (SD) have impaired autobiographical memory (AM), but the extent of the impairment has been controversial. According to one report (Westmacott, Leach, Freedman, & Moscovitch, 2001), patient performance was better when visual cues were used instead of verbal cues; however, the visual cues used in that study (family photographs) provided more retrieval support than do the word cues that are typically used in AM studies. In the present study, we sought to disentangle the effects of retrieval support and cue modality.

METHOD: We cued AMs of 5 patients with SD and 5 controls with words, simple …

The Economic Value Of A Sustainable Supply Chain, Robert Mefford Jan 2011

The Economic Value Of A Sustainable Supply Chain, Robert Mefford

Finance

The economic rationale to operate a global supply chain in a sustainable manner is developed. Arguments are made based on marketing, finance, and production theories that by engaging in socially responsible behavior the firm will increase sales, decrease costs, reduce financial risk, and increase profits which ultimately will increase returns to the firm’s shareholders. A model is developed of the mechanism by which modern production methods such as lean production and quality management result in sustainable corporate behavior which, in the long run, translates into higher stock valuations. The production effects cause marketing and financial risk effects that are complementary, …

Confronting Socially Generated Uncertainty In Adaptive Management, Andrew J. Tyre, Sarah Michaels Jan 2011

Confronting Socially Generated Uncertainty In Adaptive Management, Andrew J. Tyre, Sarah Michaels

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

As more and more organizations with responsibility for natural resource management adopt adaptive management as the rubric in which they wish to operate, it becomes increasingly important to consider the sources of uncertainty inherent in their endeavors. Without recognizing that uncertainty originates both in the natural world and in human undertakings, efforts to manage adaptively at the least will prove frustrating and at the worst will prove damaging to the very natural resources that are the management targets. There will be more surprises and those surprises potentially may prove at the very least unwanted and at the worst devastating. We …

Egyptians' Attitudes Toward Secularism, Nouran Omar, Norhan El-Araby, Sherine Samir Jan 2011

Egyptians' Attitudes Toward Secularism, Nouran Omar, Norhan El-Araby, Sherine Samir

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This research study examined Egyptians' attitudes towards Egypt's possible evolution into a secular state. Our hypotheses were that Christianity, less religiosity in Islam, more religious tolerance, higher Westernization and more liberal thinking would predict more positive attitudes towards Egypt becoming a secular state. In addition, we conducted exploratory research on the demographics including gender and socio-economic status including education, to see whether they have a relationship with secularism attitudes. The convenience sample consisted of 234 individuals who completed a series of questionnaires either at an Internet website or on paper in our local neighborhoods. Our findings confirmed our hypotheses except …

The Egyptian Revolution: How Egyptians Were Freed From Fear Of Death, Alexandra Gazis, Eman Attia, Hamida Stelzer, Mahitab El Ramlawy Jan 2011

The Egyptian Revolution: How Egyptians Were Freed From Fear Of Death, Alexandra Gazis, Eman Attia, Hamida Stelzer, Mahitab El Ramlawy

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

During the 18 days of the Egyptian revolution of 2011, people coexisted each day with death and all the linked fears surrounding it. Though death anxiety is a persistent matter and has a powerful effect on people's minds and psychological well-being, the shift of the Egyptian people's beliefs and feelings towards death and how it compelled them to action during the revolution led us to focus on the following: the comparison of the degree of death anxiety in people who participated at least once in the protests, with that of those who did not go at all. Our hypothesis is …

Personality Traits And Political Participation, Jessica Saleh, Tamima El Kahhal, Carine Abou Seif Jan 2011

Personality Traits And Political Participation, Jessica Saleh, Tamima El Kahhal, Carine Abou Seif

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to examine the Big Five personality traits in relation to political participation and activism at the American University in Cairo. Our hypothesis was that participants high on extraversion and openness to experience, and low on conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism would be the most politically active. Questionnaires used to test this were the Big five Inventory (BFI), the Activism Orientation Scale (AOS), and a political participation questionnaire developed by our team. Convenience sampling was used to administer the questionnaires to our sample of 171 students. Results revealed positive correlations between extraversion and political participation, openness …

Chasing After Huntington's Third Wave Of Democratization: The Middle East Under Change, Reem Awny Abuzaid Jan 2011

Chasing After Huntington's Third Wave Of Democratization: The Middle East Under Change, Reem Awny Abuzaid

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Escaping Huntington's three waves of democracy, the Middle East has become a phenomenon. Ever since, the Middle East scholars attempted extensively to rationalize the prevailing authoritarian regimes over the past four decades; a number of theories were proposed to address such a paradox. Studying authoritarianism has denied the Middle East academic society the chance to predict the current wave of political change that is being witnessed in the region. A draw back that could be believed to have left researchers with limited theoretical explanations for the on going experience, but that could always remain superficial. in fact a number of …

Is Egypt Ready For Democracy?, Nivin Abdel Meguid Jan 2011

Is Egypt Ready For Democracy?, Nivin Abdel Meguid

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

In the early phases, revolutions are expected to be intensely focused on achieving political goals. Over the long term, however, “revolutions cannot be described as such unless they are able to produce deep permanent political transformations” (Bahaa Eldin, 2011). These political conversions can be counted complete according to their ability to go beyond direct political and social gains. I believe that it is time for the January 25 revolution, which has already realized a great part of its political targets, to leverage its grassroots popularity to get the best use of Egypt's social capital in passing the critical period of …

The Economic Causes Of The Egyptian Revolution "January 25, 2011", Nivin Abdel Meguid, Sanaa El Banna, Rana Korayem, Hoda Salah Eldin

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

A growing number of recent studies on the Egyptian revolution attribute its beginning to a set of socio-economic and political factors. On the political side, explanations includes a) the persistent rule by terror for thirty years through the emergency law, b) the prohibition on political rights and civil freedoms and lack of free and fair elections, c) police brutality against activists– namely the case of Khaled Said) the wide spread corruption, e) the spread of virtual-opposition through social networking websites and the Arabic satellite, f) the success of the Tunisian revolution as a bloodless and fast change, the sacrifice of …

The Ethical Motivation In Public Service, Nivin Abdel Meguid Jan 2011

The Ethical Motivation In Public Service, Nivin Abdel Meguid

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This paper discusses the role of ethics in public administration practice, and considers the probability of adding an ethical dimension to the public service motivation (PSM) construct. Several scholars have linked PSM with ethical behavior in government. Together theory and research have shown that public servants, when compared to ordinary citizens, are more concerned about ethical considerations at both the individual (personal honesty and integrity) and collective (social justice and fairness) levels in the United States. It may thus be possible for ethics to play a fundamental role in scholarly efforts to define and measure PSM. This paper considers the …

Plato's Guardians' Educational Program And The Process Of Regaining Security Back In Egypt After The Revolution, Refai Deena

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

A state is like a mosaic piece, in terms of foundation and realization. A mosaic piece is founded or assembled by little glass pieces, and finally realized as a whole piece because of these little other pieces that it contains; the same concept can be applied to a state, as it is formed and founded on multiple bodies and institutions and therefore realized as an entity due to their existence. Additionally, the choice of color and the way the little glass pieces are assembled determine the beauty and value of the mosaic piece, the same case here can also be …

Applying The Swot Analysis On Egyptian Nonprofit Organizations: A Case Study Of Future Protectors For Care And Development Association, Nashwa Ghoneim

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

The civil society has taken a very active role in the quest for democracy that continues to spread across the continents till it reached the Middle East region only recently. This is clear given the successive revolts that have taken place in many of the Arab countries calling for real democracy. Therefore, especially in Egypt, efforts should be directed toward defending civil society organizations and activists who are being threatened by the coercive authoritarian government actions over the past decades (Naidoo, 2007).

Buckeye Battleground, Daniel J. Coffey, John C. Green, David B. Cohen, Stephen C. Brooks

Buckeye Battleground

Buckeye Battleground is the result of a decade’s worth of research at the Bliss Institute on elections in Ohio, with special emphasis on the 2004 and 2008 presidential campaigns, and the 2006 gubernatorial campaign. This book seeks to explain why Ohio is, and has been, at the center of American elections. Using historical analysis, demographic data, and public opinion surveys, the authors demonstrate Ohio’s role as the quintessential “battleground” state in American elections. This title is unique in its approach and coverage.

Regional Science Reconsidered, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, James O. Bukenya Jan 2011

Regional Science Reconsidered, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, James O. Bukenya

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Because disciplines and their cores and boundaries are subject to change, a periodic introspective assessment can be useful in evaluating the relevance of a changing discipline to the equally dynamic and pressing needs of society. Similar examinations of other disciplines, notably economics, have been conducted in part as a means of minimizing the risks of declining credibility, policy relevance, and societal benefit. With the Southern Regional Science Association celebrating recently its 50th meeting, and as regional science itself approaches its 60th year, this paper provides a reexamination of the core of regional science. We consider the theoretical and methodological underpinnings …

Constraints On State-Level Foreign Policy: (Re) Justifying, Refining And Distinguishing The Dormant Foreign Affairs Doctrine, Matthew Schaefer Jan 2011

Constraints On State-Level Foreign Policy: (Re) Justifying, Refining And Distinguishing The Dormant Foreign Affairs Doctrine, Matthew Schaefer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

A reassessment of United States' constitutional constraints on state-level foreign policy is sorely needed. State engagement in foreign policy was rarely significant until the 1960s. Since that time, state involvement has rapidly expanded in both sheer magnitude and the types of activities undertaken. The most prominent and problematic among these state and local activities in the past fifty-plus years has been three waves of state and local sanction initiatives targeting countries ruled by regimes with repugnant human rights policies. In the mid-1980s, over half of the states and at least 100 localities adopted sanctions legislation against South Africa, most often …

The Federal Common Law Of Vicarious Fiduciary Liability Under Erisa, Colleen E. Medill Jan 2011

The Federal Common Law Of Vicarious Fiduciary Liability Under Erisa, Colleen E. Medill

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Absent a federal common law rule of vicarious fiduciary liability, a corporate employer, in its nonfiduciary capacity as the settlor of its ERISA plan, may design the documents that govern the employer's plan as a shield against fiduciary responsibility for the actions of the employer's own internal fiduciary employees. This Article explores the potential for development of another area of federal common law under ERISA - the incorporation of respondeat superior liability principles to impose ERISA fiduciary liability ("vicarious fiduciary liability") upon a corporation for the fiduciary activities of its employees or agents. This claims and remedies system requires that …
