Farm Fragmentation: Mapping The Status And Trends Of Agricultural Lands In Colorado, Gabrielle Friedman Jun 2011

Farm Fragmentation: Mapping The Status And Trends Of Agricultural Lands In Colorado, Gabrielle Friedman

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Statistical spatial analysis was used in this research to assess the factors contributing to the downsizing of farms as well as overall farm size choice in Colorado. The areas of research focus will be the spatial effects and the economic landscape. This work will challenge the common belief that large, corporate farms are swallowing up small farms in a consolidation effort. Further, the analysis will quantify and visualize the status of agricultural lands in Colorado. The research will help to inform the theoretical understanding of agricultural decision processes within the context of economic and spatial factors.

High School Graduation And Dropout Rates In The Pikes Peak Region Of Colorado: A Spatial Analysis Of School Proximity To Military Installations, Rachel Orlicky Jun 2011

High School Graduation And Dropout Rates In The Pikes Peak Region Of Colorado: A Spatial Analysis Of School Proximity To Military Installations, Rachel Orlicky

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

The purpose of this project was to examine graduation and dropout rates for high school students to determine if a correlation could be found with respect to the relative school distance from a military installation in the Pikes Peak region. Spatial analysis and Ordinary Least Squares analysis were used to build a linear regression model to predict student graduation and dropout rates. The results for the total student population for graduation rates and for dropout rates showed no statistically significant correlation with respect to the relative proximity to a military installation. Detailed analysis revealed that several minority and gender subgroups …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of The Hope Vi Program In Revitalizing Conventional Public Housing Sites: A Multiple Case Study In St. Louis, Uchechukwu Anthony Oluku Jun 2011

A Comparative Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of The Hope Vi Program In Revitalizing Conventional Public Housing Sites: A Multiple Case Study In St. Louis, Uchechukwu Anthony Oluku

Dissertations

The study examines two groups of housing developments to ascertain to what extent HOPE VI policy objectives have been achieved in St. Louis. HOPE VI (King Louis, Blumeyer and Cochran) and HOPE VI-like (Murphy Park) interventions at these four mixed-income sites involved the demolition and redevelopment of severely distressed (high-rise) public housing developments. The other group includes three conventional public housing developments: Clinton Peabody and Carr Square underwent substantial rehabilitation involving limited demolition and the reconfiguration of existing units, while only more routine renovation of existing units occurred at LaSalle. Two broad categories of indicators were used to compare both …

Teaching Vocabulary Through Data-Driven Learning, Erin Margaret Shaw Jun 2011

Teaching Vocabulary Through Data-Driven Learning, Erin Margaret Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this master's project was to write a resource book that demonstrates how teachers can use data-driven learning methods to teach vocabulary. First, a brief overview of corpus linguistics, data-driven learning, and the corpus used in this book (COCA) is given. Then, the book presents different aspects of vocabulary learning in the context of a corpus. Topics included are frequency knowledge, part of speech knowledge, morphological knowledge, synonym knowledge, collocational knowledge, and register knowledge with a chapter on each topic. For each aspect of vocabulary learning there is a section that introduces the topic to the teacher, followed …

A Study Of The Correlation Between Working Memory And Second Language Ei Test Scores, Eve Kiyomi Okura Jun 2011

A Study Of The Correlation Between Working Memory And Second Language Ei Test Scores, Eve Kiyomi Okura

Theses and Dissertations

A principal argument against the use of elicited imitation (EI) to measure L2 oral proficiency is that performance does not require linguistic knowledge, but requires only rote memorization. This study addressed the issue by administering two tests to the same group of students studying English as a second language: (1) a working memory test, and (2) an English oral proficiency EI test. Participants came from a range of English language proficiency levels. A Pearson correlation was performed on the test results for each participant. The hypothesis was that English EI scores and working memory scores would not correlate significantly. This …

A Geographical Perspective Of The Statistical Data Of And About Greeley, Colorado, And Its Off-Premise Liquor Stores: Location, Number, And Possible Saturation, Scott Jones Jun 2011

A Geographical Perspective Of The Statistical Data Of And About Greeley, Colorado, And Its Off-Premise Liquor Stores: Location, Number, And Possible Saturation, Scott Jones

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

This document, with the use of Geographical Information Systems, will verify that statistically Greeley, Colorado does not contain more than an adequate number of liquor stores within its city limits. This document is intended to give the reader a nonbiased geographical perspective of the statistical data of Greeley, Colorado and its off-premise liquor stores: location, number, and if it should be considered over-saturated.

The definition and allotments of a liquor store licenses vary. The three licenses available are Special Event, On Premise, and Off-Premise. These can commingle. This study was concerned with the license used for sale of full-strength products …

The Influence Of Religion On Immigrant Structural Assimilation In The Greater Los Angeles Area, Jason D. Simons Jun 2011

The Influence Of Religion On Immigrant Structural Assimilation In The Greater Los Angeles Area, Jason D. Simons

Theses and Dissertations

By operationalizing Gordon's definition of structural assimilation, I examine occupational prestige, income, and educational attainment across four immigrant groups: 1.5 generation, 2nd generation, 3rd generation, and 4th generation. Additionally, I analyze the effect of religious affiliation, frequency of attendance, religious conversion, context of reception, and selective acculturation on each of the three measures of structural assimilation. Ethnic origin, gender, and age are implemented as control variables. Results provide evidence that religion does affect measures of structural assimilation. While impacts on occupational prestige and income seem minimal to non-existent, the effect of religion on educational attainment is more substantial. Religion indirectly …

Biculturalism Among Indigenous College Students, Colton Duane Miller Jun 2011

Biculturalism Among Indigenous College Students, Colton Duane Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Indigenous* college students in both Canada and the United States have the lowest rates of obtaining postsecondary degrees, and their postsecondary dropout rates are higher than for any other minority (Freeman & Fox, 2005; Mendelson, 2004; Reddy, 1993). There has been very little research done to uncover possible reasons for such low academic achievement and high dropout rates for Indigenous students. Some of the research that has been done indicates that one challenge for Indigenous students is the difficulty in navigating the cultural differences between higher education and their Indigenous cultures. Biculturalism is the ability of an individual to …
