Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2010 - 2011, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

The past year has been one of transition for SMU. We celebrated the University’s first ten successful years and looked forward to our second. I bade farewell to Professor Howard Hunter our previous president and to Dr Richard Hu our previous chancellor, as I welcomed Professor Arnoud De Meyer and Mr Yong Pung How into these offices. More recently, we held our last Patron’s Day with Singapore’s former President S.R. Nathan as Patron, and I look forward to greeting President Tony Tan as our new Patron. It has also been a year in which we left behind the role of …

The Journey Of Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears Jan 2010

The Journey Of Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

With great joy, I want to commend all our authors in this year's journal. The depth of thought and willingness to enter the crucible of life with an enduring vision of servant leadership have been very inspiring to me. The articles collected in this volume represent many countries, varied points of view, and a vast landscape of human courage. In my own life, I recently decided to take a purposeful voyage of my own through a landscape that has captured my imagination for some years. As the song says, I took a trip on Route 66. The famed American highway …

Servant-Leadership: A Response To Downsizing, Mark Mcvay Jan 2010

Servant-Leadership: A Response To Downsizing, Mark Mcvay

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Downsizing and devaluation of the human asset are traditional responses to difficult economic times. Traditional approaches that support this method, command and control or authoritarian leadership models, do not deliver the benefits promised as a result of downsizing. Of great significance in the current context of complexity and dissonance, servant-leadership is a valid alternative and companies that are supportive of Robert Greenleaf's characteristics of servant-leadership have demonstrated positive results in the marketplace. In this time of economic turmoil, the world cries out for servantleadership. The sad truth is that "many companies treat their people as disposable. At the first sign …

The Principles Of Servant-Leadership = The Principles Of Forgiveness, Paul Nakai Jan 2010

The Principles Of Servant-Leadership = The Principles Of Forgiveness, Paul Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

On an overcast summer day in 1944, Sgt. Jimmy Makino was with his squad on patrol in a field outside of Livorno, Italy. Suddenly, they were under heavy German cannon fire. To Jimmy's right, Pfc. Kiyoto Nakai fell to the ground. Shrapnel had entered Nakai's left eye socket, torn out the bridge of his nose, and continued on through his right eye. Another piece of shrapnel injured his left ear as well as wounding him in a number of other areas of his body. That field in Italy would be the last thing that Nakai would see. Kiyoto Nakai was …

Over the past decade, the Port of Virginia has slipped to third place on the East Coast behind Savannah, Ga. Perhaps we can reverse this by means of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s Heartland Corridor and the recent lease acquisition of the APM Maersk facility in Portsmouth.

Building The Tide hasn’t bankrupted Norfolk because of significant federal funding. Paying to operate The Tide, however, could be quite painful if the experience of other regions provides a clue.

Understanding The M-Form Hypothesis, Matthew J. Holian Jan 2010

Understanding The M-Form Hypothesis, Matthew J. Holian

Faculty Publications

The theory of the firm deserves to play a prominent role in both the undergraduate and graduate industrial organization curriculum, both because of the vast amount of attention that has been paid to this area over the last four decades, as well as its practical relevance for strategy and antitrust. This lecture briefly presents some background on the theory of the firm in general, and the M-form Hypothesis in particular. The M-form Hypothesis is an important theory of firm structure, developed by Chandler (1962) and Williamson (1975). A mathematical model, discussion section and accompanying lecture slides illustrate the concepts necessary …

“Life, It’S Been Said, Is One Big Book…”: One Hundred Years Of Qian Zhongshu, Christopher Rea Jan 2010

“Life, It’S Been Said, Is One Big Book…”: One Hundred Years Of Qian Zhongshu, Christopher Rea

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Headlines about China have been looking the same for some time now. “The China story” always seems to be political: labor riots and their suppression; sabre-rattling over Taiwan and cultural erasure in Tibet; catastrophic earthquakes and official ineptitude; internet censorship and jailed dissidents (the latest being Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo). Even ostensibly good news, such as the Chinese government’s investment in wind power, becomes yet another story about how China is going to eat our lunch.

Musings On A Museum: A Trip To Xibaipo, Kenneth Pomeranz Jan 2010

Musings On A Museum: A Trip To Xibaipo, Kenneth Pomeranz

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A short trip to China earlier this month took me to Beijing to give a talk, to Shijiazhuang for a conference, and, briefly, to the Hebei countryside — my first time in quite a while in rural North China. And it once again proved that every trip teaches you something, but often not on the expected topics. (One little detail that I found telling: most of the Beijing-based academics who were at the Shijiazhuang conference told me it was their first time there. True, Shijiazhuang is not a tourist hot spot, but it is a provincial capital, with over 2 …

Multijurisdictional Adr Practice: Lessons For Litigators, Kristen M. Blankley, Emily E. Root, John Minter Jan 2010

Multijurisdictional Adr Practice: Lessons For Litigators, Kristen M. Blankley, Emily E. Root, John Minter

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

As everything else in life has become more global, so has the practice of law. Lawyers commonly have clients and conduct work in states other than the ones in which they reside and are licensed. Transactional lawyers commonly work for clients in different states or put together deals that close in states other than the ones in which they are licensed. Litigators, too, often have clients in other states, participate in court proceedings in other states, and engage in both formal and informal discovery in other states. The work of the litigator poses even more questions if that litigator is …

Exploring Unmet Needs And Barriers To Phychological And Behavioral Health Services In Rural Appalachia, Sarah Rachel Jarvis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Residents living in rural communities face many challenges, one of which is the need for adequate mental health services. Various factors including accessibility, quality, and social stigma often impact an individual’s decision to seek services, especially when they are related to psychological distress. This project highlights the characteristics of several rural communities within Appalachia to determine if there is an unmet need for psychological services and what barriers may be keeping potential patients from seeking psychological services. Both archival and survey data will be analyzed to determine the perceived need for psychological services and what barriers community leaders feel are …

“Applied” Aspects Of The Drug Resistance Strategies Project, Michael L. Hecht, Michelle Miller-Day Jan 2010

“Applied” Aspects Of The Drug Resistance Strategies Project, Michael L. Hecht, Michelle Miller-Day

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This paper discusses the applied aspects of our Drug Resistance Strategies Project. We argue that a new definitional distinction is needed to expand the notion of “applied” from the traditional notion of utilizing theory, which we call “applied.1”, in order to consider theory-grounded, theory testing and theory developing applied research. We label this new definition “applied.2” research. We then explain that our descriptive work describing the social processes of adolescent substance use, identity and use, and drug norms, as well as the subsequent development and dissemination of our keepin’ it REAL middle school substance use curriculum are examples of “applied.1” …

Weight Gain Among Adults With Intellectual Disabilities Receiving Atypical Antipsychotics, Sherri Lyn Transier Jan 2010

Weight Gain Among Adults With Intellectual Disabilities Receiving Atypical Antipsychotics, Sherri Lyn Transier

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study assessed whether the atypical antipsychotic agents olanzapine, risperidone, and quetiapine are associated with significant weight gain among adults with intellectual disabilities after 6 months of drug treatment. The body weights of 79 participants were retrieved 6 months prior to the initiation of drug treatment, at the start of the atypical antipsychotic agent, and after 6 months of drug therapy. Each individual served as his or her own control by utilizing pretreatment baseline trends in weight change to calculate a dependent measure of adjusted posttreatment weight gain. Doing so allowed for a stringent determination of the liability for …
