Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paper evaluates the success of programmes of the Federal Government of Nigeria in improving funding of university libraries. The World Bank loan, 10 percent direct allocation, and the Education Trust Fund (ETF) interventions were found to be beneficial to library acquisitions. Interventions like the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and National Universities Commission (NUC) central book purchase scheme as beneficial. Prudent management of funds at Hezekiah Oluwasanmi library has been of help since the stoppage of direct allocation from NUC. It is recommended that the government should involve end users of intervention programmes in planning and execution of future programmes.

Creating A Positive Learning Environment With A Guest Speaker, Hikaru Nakano
Creating A Positive Learning Environment With A Guest Speaker, Hikaru Nakano
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Librarians and teaching faculty can collaborate to create a good learning environment for students. Organizing events with outside speakers can bring lasting benefits to students, faculty, and the community. This article highlights the need for advance preparation when organizing an event. Librarians must clearly define objectives to maximize participation and ensure that events are linked to courses. When real-world events are linked to students' academic experience, they are more actively engaged and can be more involved in their studies. Through administrative contributions, librarians can facilitate such events.

Hope And Worry Among Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder Or Down Syndrome, Paula Ogston
Hope And Worry Among Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder Or Down Syndrome, Paula Ogston
Theses and Dissertations
The present study used quantitative and qualitative methodology to examine mothers’ hope and worry. Participants were recruited via autism and Down syndrome organizations. Two hundred fifty-nine mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders (n = 199) and Down syndrome (n = 60) responded to the online questionnaire. Most mothers were white (n = 230); eighty-seven percent were married and their average age was 39.06 years. Findings support previous research suggesting that hope is a protective factor against psychological distress: mothers with higher hope reported lower dispositional worry. Mothers were asked to describe what they worried about when they woke up …
Looking Good And Taking Care: Consumer Culture, Identity, And Poor, Minority, Urban Tweens, Elizabeth Edgecomb
Looking Good And Taking Care: Consumer Culture, Identity, And Poor, Minority, Urban Tweens, Elizabeth Edgecomb
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Looking Good and Taking Care: Consumer Culture, Identity, and Poor, Minority, Urban Tweens is an ethnographic examination of how poor, minority, urban tweens (age 7-14) use consumer culture to create and perform their personal and social identities. Although portrayed in mass media as selfish and hedonistic, this work finds tweens creating profoundly social, giving, and caring identities and relationships through consumption. Their use of consumer culture is also a form of political resistance that subverts their place in the age, class, and race hierarchy. These tweens use “looking good” (attention to grooming, style, and behaving respectably), and not name brand …

Assessing The Impact Of A Modernized Application Process On Florida’S Food Stamp Caseload, Colleen Heflin, Peter Mueser
Assessing The Impact Of A Modernized Application Process On Florida’S Food Stamp Caseload, Colleen Heflin, Peter Mueser
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
In 2005, Florida implemented an internet-based service delivery system for eligibility determination in public assistance programs, including the Food Stamp, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and the Medicaid programs. At the same time, Florida switched from a caseworker model to a technology-driven model and decreased staffing levels of employees involved in social service delivery. We conduct an evaluative case study of the effects of these policy changes on the Food Stamp caseload. In particular, we consider the impact on applications and the flows onto and off of the program. To answer these questions, we use administrative data from the …

Empathy Conditioned Conservation: “Walking-In-The-Shoes-Of-Others” As A Conservation Farmer, Robert Sheeder, Gary D. Lynne
Cornhusker Economics
Since the destruction and despair caused by the dust bowl of the 1930’s, Americans and their government have taken a keen interest in natural resource conservation policy on agricultural land. The Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act of 1936 was the first farm bill to include provisions that provided payments to farmers willing to employ soil conservation measures (Cain and Lovejoy, 2004). While the main purpose of this bill was to provide financial support to impoverished farmers, the fact remains that natural resource conservation was starting to become an important issue for the American public.

Two And A Half Cheers For The Midwestern Bourgeoisie: Role Of The Virtues In Tempering Business Decisions, Marianna Khachaturyan, Gary D. Lynne
Cornhusker Economics
A recent book (The Bourgeois Virtues: Ethics for an Age of Commerce, D. N. McCloskey), raises the matter of the role of the virtues in business and economic choice, arguing that capitalism can indeed, be virtuous or at least better than the alternative(s). This argument is especially timely in light of the apparent excesses on Wall Street and in some banking/financial institutions. Excessive greed and often the lack of business ethics contributed in substantive ways to the financial crisis and near economic meltdown we have been experiencing. As McCloskey, (2006, pp. 1-2) argues (in setting the stage for …
