Motivations For Camp Staff To Work At Camp, Jessica M. Cresci Mar 2010

Motivations For Camp Staff To Work At Camp, Jessica M. Cresci

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

Camp staff are the heart of summer camps and can affect how the summer runs. The purpose of this study was to identify the motivations for staff to work at residential summer camps with special regard to any differences in motivations between staff who attended camp as a camper and staff who never attended camp as well as between international and national staff. This study used cluster sampling measuring 21 possible motivations. A link to an online survey was sent to eight camps as identified on the American Camp Association website. The top six motivations for staff to work at …

A Study Of The Economic Effects Of Imposing Fair Trade Coffee Consumption In San Francisco, Alexander Preston Magginetti Mar 2010

A Study Of The Economic Effects Of Imposing Fair Trade Coffee Consumption In San Francisco, Alexander Preston Magginetti

Agribusiness

Noting the rising sales of eco-friendly and fairly traded goods in the United States, this study examines the effects of implementing a policy that would limit the supply of non-fair-trade coffee in San Francisco. The goal of this policy would be to increase the sales of the fair-trade coffee market in the United States, and benefit fair-trade coffee growers by mandating the sale of fair-trade coffee in San Francisco. This study focuses on the economic effects of the policy on consumers and producers of fair-trade coffee, regular coffee, tea, and soda.

“Fair trade” began at the end of World War …

A Time Series Analysis Of The Role Of Imports In India's Phenomenal Economic Growth, Peter J. Saunders Mar 2010

A Time Series Analysis Of The Role Of Imports In India's Phenomenal Economic Growth, Peter J. Saunders

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper investigates the role of imports in India's impressive economic growth. Annual data ranging from 1970 to 2005 are used to investigate the impact of imports on economic growth that is measured by the real GDP. Johansen's ( 1988) cointegration tests indicate that these two variables are cointegrated. Therefore, a long run relationship between imports and the real GDP exists. A vector error correction (VEC) testing framework is used in a further data analysis. VEC tests indicate that imports have impacted positively India's economic growth in the short run. Therefore, imports may have played an important role in India's …

Validation Of The Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument: An Application Of The Korean Version, Yun Seok Choi, Minhee Seo, David Scott, Jeffrey J. Martin

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) based on the Competing Values Framework (CVF). More specially, cultural equivalence between the Korean version and the original English version of the OCAI was evaluated using 39 bilingual Koreans. Next, a field test was conducted to examine scale reliability and construct validity of the Korean version of the OCAI using 133 organizational members from the Korean Professional Baseball League (KPBL). The findings indicate that the Korean version was successfully translated, items maintained the same meaning of the original …

Telepresence, Soundscapes And Technological Expectation: Putting The Observer Into The Equation, Gary Pettey, Cheryl C. Bracken, Bridget Rubenking, Michael Buncher

Communication Faculty Publications

In an experiment exploring the impact of sound on sensations of telepresence, 126 participants watched a video clip using either headphones or speakers. The results illustrate that sound is an important factor in stimulating telepresence responses in audiences. Interactions between soundscape and screen size were also revealed. A traverse interaction between aural/visual congruency and soundscapes was evident. A second data set of 102 participants was collected to illuminate the effect of technological expectation that emerged in the first study. Expectations had been mentioned in other studies, and the data support the notion that people have an expectation of the technological …

Alternative Technical Efficiency Measures: Skew, Bias, And Scale, Qu Feng, William C. Horrace Mar 2010

Alternative Technical Efficiency Measures: Skew, Bias, And Scale, Qu Feng, William C. Horrace

Economics - All Scholarship

In the fixed-effects stochastic frontier model an efficiency measure relative to the best firm in the sample is universally employed. This paper considers a new measure relative to the worst firm in the sample. We find that estimates of this measure have smaller bias than those of the traditional measure when the sample consists of many firms near the efficient frontier. Moreover, a two-sided measure relative to both the best and the worst firms is proposed. Simulations suggest that the new measures may be preferred depending on the skewness of the inefficiency distribution and the scale of efficiency differences.

Negative Judgments: Reflections On Teaching Reflective Practice, Steven S. Taylor Mar 2010

Negative Judgments: Reflections On Teaching Reflective Practice, Steven S. Taylor

Organization Management Journal

Teaching reflective practice places difficult demands on the teacher as it seems to inevitably highlight the teacher’s own ability, or lack thereof, to be a reflective practitioner. In this article, I reflect upon a time when I was teaching reflective practice online and a student and I made negative judgments about each other. I found that my negative judgments were primarily based in a tacit assumption that I am right (and the student was wrong) and a fear of failing as a teacher. By being tacit, they are hidden from possible inquiry. An important aspect of my own defensive behavior …

Two To The Power Of Three: An Exploration Of Metaphor For Sense Making In (Women’S) Collaborative Inquiry, Louise Grisoni, Margaret Page Mar 2010

Two To The Power Of Three: An Exploration Of Metaphor For Sense Making In (Women’S) Collaborative Inquiry, Louise Grisoni, Margaret Page

Organization Management Journal

This paper explores how working with metaphors provides a way to explore under the surface dynamics embedded in the practice and processes of collaborative inquiry. We argue that metaphors are a form of presentational knowing and provide a bridge between experiential knowing and propositional knowing. We have surfaced an exploration of horizontal (sibling) and vertical relations using retrospective inquiry. This paper demonstrates the reality, messiness and politics of collaborative research inquiry processes, which tend to be understudied and under-theorized. We are concerned to affirm the value of collaborative inquiry, and at the same time, break some taboos and myths concerning …

Starting With Howard Gardner’S Five Minds, Adding Elliott Jaques’S Responsibility Time Span: Implications For Undergraduate Management Education, Diana Stork, Jill Woodilla, Stephen M. Brown, John Ogilvie, Regina Rutter, Mary Trefry

Organization Management Journal

This article offers a perspective on management education derived from Howard Gardner’s five minds framework and Elliott Jaques’s responsibility time span. We describe the five minds (disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful, and ethical) and discuss some of the criticisms raised about Gardner’s approach. We introduce Jaques’s time span concept and suggest its applicability to the structuring of roles in a school of management. Putting Jacques together with Gardner allows us to explore questions about the five minds that could be addressed by deans, department chairs, and faculty members, each with a different responsibility time span.

‘‘Is The Socially Responsible Corporation A Myth? The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of Corporate Social Responsibility’’ By Timothy M. Devinney In Academy Of Management Perspectives, May 2009, Kathleen R. Johnson Mar 2010

‘‘Is The Socially Responsible Corporation A Myth? The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of Corporate Social Responsibility’’ By Timothy M. Devinney In Academy Of Management Perspectives, May 2009, Kathleen R. Johnson

Organization Management Journal

The following review provides a summary of and comment on Timothy M. Devinney’s article entitled ‘‘Is the Socially Responsible Corporation a Myth? The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Corporate Social Responsibility.’’ I argue that Devinney provides a convincing explanation for the failure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in current predatory, oligopolistic business practices. His exposition provides an initial and necessary first step towards addressing the inequitable systems of organization that contribute to our social and environmental problems.

Changing Po2licy: The Elements For Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, Anne Rossier Markus, Meagan Lyon, Sara J. Rosenbaum Mar 2010

Changing Po2licy: The Elements For Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, Anne Rossier Markus, Meagan Lyon, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Childhood asthma is a serious and chronic health issue that affects one in seven U.S. children and their families, compromising their health and quality of life and placing a heavy financial burden on families as well as an enormous strain on the health care system. Treating, managing, and ultimately preventing and reducing the burden of asthma represents a critical test of the ability of the U.S. health system – health insurers, clinical care providers, and public health agencies – to work together. Our investigation found that, as a country, we already know enough to act and improve life for the …

Medicare Advantage Payment Provisions: Health Care And Education Affordability Reconciliation Act Of 2010 H.R. 4872, Brian Biles, Grace Arnold Mar 2010

Medicare Advantage Payment Provisions: Health Care And Education Affordability Reconciliation Act Of 2010 H.R. 4872, Brian Biles, Grace Arnold

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

The Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010 would make major changes to Medicare Advantage (MA) payment policies. Overall, payments to MA plans would be reduced from the current national average of 113 percent of local fee-for-service (FFS) costs to a new average of 101 percent of FFS costs. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated that the new polices would reduce Medicare spending by $132 billion over 10 years. The new policies would set county payment benchmarks for MA plans at 115 percent, 107.5 percent, 100 percent, and 95 percent of local FFS costs depending of the …

Changing Policy: The Elements For Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, Anne R. Markus, Meagan Lyon, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This report lays out the facts and offers specific policy recommendations for success that could change the face of childhood asthma in America. These recommendations aim to make better use of programs and policies already in place, such as Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), as well as private sector insurance coverage and existing public health programs. The recommendations also underscore the importance of careful research -- scientific, practical, and community-based -- in order to continue to learn what works best and strengthen knowledge for future action. In a reformed health system, these initial efforts are not wasted …

The Logical Structure Of Dreams And Their Relation To Reality, Jeremy Barris Mar 2010

The Logical Structure Of Dreams And Their Relation To Reality, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

The contradictions and non sequiturs often found in dreams (or, equivalently, dream-narratives) are not in fact logical errors, but express and work with a type of logic that characterizes the deepest dimensions of our waking reality. These are the dimensions in which we deal with ourselves as a whole, our lives as a whole, or with the sense of reality as a whole. We do so, for example, in situations of deep personal transformation, or of recognition of deep difference of outlook. The paper argues that the logic of these situations is validly one of contradiction and non sequitur, that …
