Presidential Embodiment Of Soft Power: The Missing Element Of The Current Theory Of Soft Power, Ashley Lauer Apr 2010

Presidential Embodiment Of Soft Power: The Missing Element Of The Current Theory Of Soft Power, Ashley Lauer

Theses & Honors Papers

As a sharp contrast to George Bush, Barack Obama, during his campaign and his first months in office, has received international acclaim and acceptance around the world. Even the vast majority of Europeans, who openly opposed and disliked George Bush, have welcomed Obama enthusiastically. He was even awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2009. Within the first year of his presidential tenure, Barack Obama already appears to have gained back more soft power than George Bush ever had.

Dvd Supplements: A Commentary On Commentaries, Jacqueline Reich, Giorgio Bertellini Apr 2010

Dvd Supplements: A Commentary On Commentaries, Jacqueline Reich, Giorgio Bertellini

CMS Faculty Publications

In the last few decades, as graduate seminars have explored the
postmodern heuristics of the “death of the author,” DVD editions
have popularized a range of audio and print supplements that
have, directly or indirectly, expanded films’ authorial halo. The notion
of the commentary is, of course, nothing new to the academy:
consider the multiple annotated editions of literary classics. But its
material extension to the home theater “experience” has had peculiar
cultural and economic consequences. As value-adding paratexts,
audio and printed commentaries can turn film texts into critical or
luxury editions, to be marketed to different levels of cinephilic …

Family Voices On Parental School Choice In Milwaukee: What Can We Learn From Low-Income Families?, Thomas Stewart, Juanita Lucas-Mclean, Laura I. Jensen, Christina Fetzko, Bonnie Ho, Sylvia Segovia

School Choice Demonstration Project

This report, designed as one component of the comprehensive evaluation of the Milwaukee school system being conducted by the School Choice Demonstration Project (SCDP), is based on focus group conversations with low-income families whose children attend Milwaukee public and private schools. The report seeks to elucidate the demand side of school choice from the perspective of the end users. More specifically, it describes the experiences of low-income families and uses their insights to better understand the strengths and limitations of their attempts to exercise parental school choice. Among its distinguishing characteristics, Milwaukee has the first publicly funded means-tested voucher program …

Milwaukee Longitudinal School Choice Evaluation: Annual School Testing Summary Report 2008-09, Jeffery R. Dean, Patrick J. Wolf

School Choice Demonstration Project

With the passage of the 2005 Wisconsin Act 125, private schools participating in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP) have been required to administer annual standardized tests in reading, mathematics, and science to their MPCP students enrolled in the 4th, 8th, and 10th grades. The law further directs Choice schools to submit copies of the scores from those tests to the School Choice Demonstration Project for processing and reporting to the Legislative Audit Bureau. During the 2008-09 school year, MPCP schools administered either nationally normed tests, such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, or the state criterion-referenced Wisconsin Knowledge …

The Comprehensive Longitudinal Evaluation Of The Milwaukee Parental Choice Program: Summary Of Third Year Reports, Patrick J. Wolf

School Choice Demonstration Project

The city of Milwaukee is often called a laboratory for experimentation with parental school choice. Milwaukee is home to the first urban school voucher program, the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP), which has grown over the past 19 years to enroll 19,803 students in 127 different private schools in 2008-09. A total of 59 public charter schools operate within the city’s boundaries, enrolling 17,158 students last year. Even students in the Milwaukee Public School (MPS) system have a variety of magnet, community, open enrollment, and inter-district school choice options available to them, so long as transportation funding holds out. When …

A Multi-Disciplinary Overview Of Chagas In Periurban Peru, Sarah Mccune, Angela M. Bayer, Gabrielle C. Hunter, Natalie M. Bowman, Juan G. Cornejo Del Carpio, Cesar Naquira, Robert H. Gilman, Caryn Bern, Michael Z. Levy Apr 2010

A Multi-Disciplinary Overview Of Chagas In Periurban Peru, Sarah Mccune, Angela M. Bayer, Gabrielle C. Hunter, Natalie M. Bowman, Juan G. Cornejo Del Carpio, Cesar Naquira, Robert H. Gilman, Caryn Bern, Michael Z. Levy

Journal of International and Global Studies

There are between 8 and 11 million cases of America Human Trypanosomiasis, commonly known as Chagas disease, in Latin America. Chagas is endemic in southern Peru, especially the Arequipa region, where it has expanded from poor, rural areas to periurban communities. This paper summarizes the findings of four studies in periurban Arequipa: on determinants of disease-vector infestation; on prevalence, spatial patterns, and risk factors of Chagas; on links between migration, settlement patterns, and disease-vector infestation; and on the relationship between discordant test results and spatially clustered transmission hotspots. These studies identified two risk factors associated with the disease: population dynamics …

Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D. Apr 2010

Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The present study examined how familial and institutional factors interact with the academic experiences of a diverse group of Black males enrolled as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors at one university. Ogbu’s (1998) Cultural-Ecological Theory of Minority School Performance, a theoretical framework, posits that the manner by which a group achieves minority status, coupled with community and family educational values, impacts academic achievement. Immigrants, voluntary minorities, perform better academically than involuntary minorities (nonimmigrants) because they are more accepting of and more likely to adapt to the White middle-class norms upon which schools in the United States are based …

The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil. Apr 2010

The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Through an ethnographic depiction of cultural creolization, this paper will detail the ways in which traditional Filipino values have been successfully mixing with and eventually lodging into the intersubjective landscape of Cagayan Valley, where the Chinese, Ibanag, Ilocano, and Itawes ethnic groups dwell. This cultural creolization process informs the ways in which the imagined social reciprocity between the self and others has been governed by a historically constituted power/knowledge system: the padrino system. This system is mainly composed of the symbiotic codes and social practices of (1) Catholicized ritual kinship and (2) the Tagalog ethics of “debt of gratitude” (utang …

Theorizing Impending Peripheries: Postindustrial Landscapes At The Edge Of Hyper-Modernity’S Collapse, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article discusses the ways in which the predominant economic mechanisms of capitalism, characterized by a hyper-mobility of flows, affect actual places and people. The rationality informing these mechanisms is the quest for a reduction of costs and the increase of potential benefit, and this can only be achieved by jumping from locale to locale searching for a cheaper labor force, new pools of resources, or an absence of environmental regulations. Mobility becomes the fundamental framework through which to understand modernity and its new economic articulations and their associated sovereignties. Anthropology has often discussed and theorized the impact of market …

The Effects Of Returns To Education On The Decision To Stay Or To Leave Secondary School?: An Empirical Study Of Brazil, Rudy Herrera Mármol Apr 2010

The Effects Of Returns To Education On The Decision To Stay Or To Leave Secondary School?: An Empirical Study Of Brazil, Rudy Herrera Mármol

Economics Honors Projects

I use the Mincerian wage equation to estimate the returns to education in Brazil from 2002 to 2008. I then use these estimates as variables that affect the decision made by potential students of whether to stay in school for one additional year. I use annually collected household survey data (PNAD) from the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Results indicate that returns to education have an effect on every student's decision. Although the relationship is positive, my analysis suggests that students make their decision to stay or leave school based on schooling degrees rather than on individual grades.

Resegregation In Minneapolis Public Schools: Tipping Points For Academic Success, Collin Cousins Apr 2010

Resegregation In Minneapolis Public Schools: Tipping Points For Academic Success, Collin Cousins

Sociology Honors Projects

What happens to achievement gaps in middle school test scores when the racial compositions of schools change? Existing research indicates that academic achievement on standardized tests is negatively related to high concentrations of non-white students in schools, and disproportionately affects non-white students. To explore this, I conducted a two-fold approach of analyzing school characteristics and student test scores from Minneapolis public schools between 1988 and 2004, and interviewing administrators from four different Minneapolis schools that used the MBST test between 1998-2004 in order to better understand the context of the processes that occurred to produce the results. I explored how …

State Sponsored Liberal Feminism In Jordan, Andrew Pragacz Apr 2010

State Sponsored Liberal Feminism In Jordan, Andrew Pragacz

Sociology Honors Projects

The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW), established in 1996, is the first expression of a state sponsored liberal feminist organization in Jordan. The JNCW, however, is not a manifestation of a transcendent 'Liberal Feminism,' as some would contend, but is a particular embodiment of it, with its own language, goals, and practical usages. Following this logic, this work contends that the JNCW (1) developed through contingent discursive movements made by the regime and (2) by accepting Jordanian nationalism and development logic as its own the JNCW promotes state desires and goals rather than, necessarily, the 'betterment of Jordanian women.'

Father Absence And Self-Esteem Amongst Economically Disadvantaged Children, Casey Kevorkian Apr 2010

Father Absence And Self-Esteem Amongst Economically Disadvantaged Children, Casey Kevorkian

Social Work Theses

Children begin to build self-esteem in early childhood based on social and emotional development. Previous research has shown that children inhabiting homes where the biological, adoptive, or step father are present have shown to exhibit higher levels of self esteem and social functioning. However, further information regarding the positive male influence, lesbian parenting, or the absence of “paternal absence” stigmas have show to contradict the previous research. This study investigated the self-esteem of economically disadvantaged children using results from the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment as it relates to the levels of father involvement. 115 children ages 3-5 involved in a …

The Advantages Of Single-Sex Vs.Coeducational Environments For High School Girls, Kristen Hartman Apr 2010

The Advantages Of Single-Sex Vs.Coeducational Environments For High School Girls, Kristen Hartman

Social Work Theses

100 female college students attending a small Catholic college in the Northeast were surveyed in order to find the relationship between attending single-sex high school and the females’ level of self esteem, motivation in the academic and career life, and gender role beliefs. Of the 100 female college students surveyed sixty attended coeducational high schools and forty attended single-sex schools. The survey questions were organized in a way which would ultimately help decide whether attending single-sex high school was more beneficial for high school girls than attending coeducational schools. The findings revealed that girls who attended single-sex high school have …
