Standardized Performance Measurement And Reporting In Emergency Departments (Eds), Gw Urgent Matters Learning Network Ii

Health Workforce Research Center Publications

The drive to maximize emergency department (ED) efficiency while also ensuring the quality of care they deliver has been the focus of experts in the United States for decades. Access to patient-centered and equitable emergency care is critical to a community, and EDs are the safety net that must provide that care whenever it is needed, to whomever needs it. Does Cultural Distance Hinder Trade In Goods? A Comparative Study Of Nine Oecd Member Nations, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Apr 2010

Does Cultural Distance Hinder Trade In Goods? A Comparative Study Of Nine Oecd Member Nations, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

We examine the effect of cultural distance, a proxy for the lack of a minimum reservoir of trust necessary to initiate and complete trade deals, on bilateral trade flows. Employing data for 67 countries that span the years 1996– 2001, we estimate a series of modified gravity specifications and find that cultural dissimilarity between nations has an economically significant and consistently negative effect on aggregate and disaggregated trade flows; however, estimated effects vary in magnitude and economic significance across measures of trade and our cohort of OECD reference countries. The consistently negative influence of cultural distance indicates that policymakers may …

Parents Describe Finding Income And Resources For Their Medicaid-Eligible Children With Disabilities, Joanne Riebschleger, Marya Sosulski, Angelique Day

Social Work Faculty Publications

In the U.S. social system, the roles of work and parenthood are often in conflict, and this conflict is especially problematic for parents of children with special needs. This study was designed to give parents an opportunity to describe their experiences in finding income and resources while caring for a Medicaid-eligible child with a chronic illness or disability. Three themes emerged: work and parenting responsibilities constantly intersected; resources for families were often insufficient or unavailable; and when parents received help, the helpers took extraordinary measures. Findings were compared to those of emerging literature; in addition, parents offered many practice and …

Homeless In Boise, Henderson Apr 2010

Homeless In Boise, Henderson

Service-Learning Program

Corpus Christi House offers hospitality and every day necessities to the homeless within the city of Boise. Through my SL experience with CCH I have gained new perspectives on homelessness through generosity, acceptance and trust. I have met some truly amazing individuals who strive to “stay strong.” Understanding and acceptance are key to success at CCH, as they help to lessen the gap between social exclusion and social acceptance. The environment provided by CCH enables the homeless to break down those barriers, create meaningful relationships and trust those around them. CCH is the true meaning of acceptance, compassion and altruism.

After-School Programscommunity Perceptions Influencing Involvement, Shirree Reynolds, Jackie Mosier, Chanel Peisner, Matt Hallowell, Ashley Murphy

Service-Learning Program

We found that participants were in favor of after-school programs and we also found that they think after-school programs were beneficial. Even though we didn’t specifically ask the participant “what part of development do you think after-school programs benefit a child or adolescent,” we think it is safe to infer that the participants view after-school programs and/or activities as beneficial to development in general. Future research is still needed to evaluate future improvements that can be made in after-school programs.

Conscientiousness As A Mediator Of Caffeine Use And Academic Performance, Laura Lussier Apr 2010

Conscientiousness As A Mediator Of Caffeine Use And Academic Performance, Laura Lussier

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

Academic performance (AP) is of primary importance to undergraduate students because it is related to future economic and occupational success. Therefore, it is not surprising that students want to maximize their GPA, a common measure of AP. This study used a survey model to investigate the relationships among caffeine use (CU), conscientiousness (CN), and AP. Specifically, it was hypothesized that there would be a positive correlation between CU and GPA, CU and CN, and CN and GPA. In addition, CN was believed to be a mediating variable in the CU-GPA relationship. Analysis of the results revealed that the only significant …

A Solution Looking For A Problem: Testimony Before The 2010 Maryland General Assembly On Senate Bill 570/House Bill 986: Campaign Materials – Stockholder Approval, Larry S. Gibson Apr 2010

A Solution Looking For A Problem: Testimony Before The 2010 Maryland General Assembly On Senate Bill 570/House Bill 986: Campaign Materials – Stockholder Approval, Larry S. Gibson

Faculty Scholarship

The U.S. Supreme Court in Citizens United v Federal Elections Commission declared unconstitutional under the First Amendment right to freedom of speech federal statutory limitations on corporate political expenditures. Before Citizens United, Maryland was already among the 26 states that permitted corporations to make direct political contributions and to make independent political expenditures. Consequently, Citizens United did not change Maryland election law and practice. The Maryland General Assembly has steadfastly resisted efforts to change the Maryland approach. Over the past several years, the General Assembly has repeatedly rejected bills that would have banned political contributions by business entities. Many in …

Who Moved My Intranet? The Human Side Of Introducing Collaborative Technologies To Library Staff, Keven Jeffery, Ellie Dworak

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the Fall of 2007, the San Diego State University (SDSU) Library changed from an HTML intranet to a Wiki intranet (Dworak & Jeffery, 2009) using the MediaWiki software. This change was carried out by a group of three people (two librarians and an IT staff person who was the intranet webmaster). In doing so, the group shifted the responsibility for content development and maintenance from a single webmaster (with several backups) to all library employees. This change was made in the hopes that this would lead to a more dynamic, relevant, and current intranet. In order for such a …

Reference By Any Other Name, Ellie Dworak

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Librarians have been doing long-distance reference work for a very long time. Libraries have used telephones since sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s and email since before I began my career in 1996. Even chat reference can hardly be called an "emerging reference service"--I first remember hearing about it at a Southern California Online Users Group conference a decade ago. Though reference via machines is not new, we seem to be at a pivotal time. There are currently so many possibilities for reaching out to our patrons that it can be hard to make sense of which options …
