One way in which humans are set apart from other animals is by our impressive intellectual capacities. Humans are commonly considered to be true masters of rational, conscious control over our actions. However, that feeling of control may be mostly illusory. Accumulating evidence suggests that unconscious cognitive processes can account for much of human behavior. Homeostasis is a clear example of the evolutionary benefit of automation, allowing valuable energy and limited attention to be diverted elsewhere. I instead want to focus on the automaticity of more complicated behaviors, ones that are typically thought to require a large amount of cognitive …
Stigma And Therapy Completion For Latent Tuberculosis Among Haitian-Origin Patients, Jeannine Coreil, Michael Lauzardo, Heather Clayton
Stigma And Therapy Completion For Latent Tuberculosis Among Haitian-Origin Patients, Jeannine Coreil, Michael Lauzardo, Heather Clayton
Florida Public Health Review
A prospective cohort study of LTBI treatment conducted within the Haitian population of South Florida investigated the predictive association between illness-related stigma among patients near the beginning of treatment and completion of preventive therapy. Factors associated with perceived stigma were also investigated. Ninety patients from Broward and Palm Beach counties were administered a questionnaire that included items related to illness history, perceptions and understanding of latent tuberculosis, and a 25-item stigma scale adapted from previously developed measures of tuberculosis-related stigma. Therapy completion was determined through a follow-up chart review. Data analyses compared patients who completed therapy with those who defaulted …
The Recent Migration Slowdown And America's Changing Regional Demographics, William H. Frey
The Recent Migration Slowdown And America's Changing Regional Demographics, William H. Frey
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
America's regional demographics have been strongly influenced by persistent migration flows from the sunbelt to snowbelt, inward from the coasts, and immigration from abroad. Fast growing metropolitan areas like Las Vegas have ridden the waves of these flows. This presentation will discuss how past migration patterns has created sharp regional distinctions, and how the recent migration slowdown has affected them.

Diagnosing Decisions: An Examination Of Medical Career Choices And Their Effects On The Health Care System, Nicole Craker '10
Honor Scholar Theses
With the passage of the new health care bill in March of this year, President Obama was able to promise health care coverage to millions of Americans (Health Reform, 2010). While this was a major step towards increasing the health of our nation, promise of coverage does not automatically equate with the promise of better health. Rather, the expanded coverage may more significantly correlate with expanded physician wait lists. As newly insured Americans attempt to make appointments, they may have a difficult time finding a physician who has the time to take them due to a shortage of available doctors. …

Managing The Data Deluge: Understanding Scientists' Need For Data Curation Services, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino, Marisa Ramirez, Karen Mcgaughey
Library Scholarship
While library research on data curation is active and ongoing in the humanities and social sciences, the research regarding data curation within the sciences is in its infancy. The lack of knowledge about data creation, management, and reuse has a direct impact on librarianship, library services, and library users, as libraries are now being asked to provide services to archive data created at their universities. What are the data curation needs on campus, and what services are libraries and librarians willing and able to provide to meet these needs? Information gathered from a survey distributed to Cal Poly State University …

Faculty Publications
This paper provides a broad review of the extant literature involving the treatment of sleeplessness in older adults with insomnia. First, background information (including information regarding key issues in late-life insomnia and epidemiology of late-life insomnia) pertinent to achieving a general understanding of insomnia in the elderly is presented. Next, theories of insomnia in older adults are examined and discussed in relation to treatment of insomnia in late-life. With a general knowledge base provided, empirical evidence for both pharmacological (briefly) and psychological treatment options for insomnia in late-life are summarized. Recent advances in the psychological treatment of insomnia are provided …
Staff Users And Overdue Fines In Nigerian Polytechnic Libraries, Nelson Edewor
Staff Users And Overdue Fines In Nigerian Polytechnic Libraries, Nelson Edewor
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study investigates the attitudes of staff users toward the payment of overdue fines in Nigerian Polytechnic libraries. A survey was applied to staff users of the libraries of the Delta State Polytechnic Oghara-Otefe, and Delta State Polytechnic. A total of 87 staff participated in the study. A questionnaire and oral interview were used in data collection. Findings reveal that staff users rarely pay overdue fines and would like the system discontinued. The study affirmed the fact that fines are a means of generating funds for the library and a measure to compel users to return books on time. The …

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Migrant Workers Remittances: Building Futures And Forging Leadership Back Home, Mohamed Abdinur
Migrant Workers Remittances: Building Futures And Forging Leadership Back Home, Mohamed Abdinur
Theses and Graduate Projects
For many developing countries, remittances from migrant workers are larger, more stable and outpace foreign direct investments and overseas development aid as a source of development funds. In many developing countries, external sources of finance, particularly remittances, are imperative to carry out poverty alleviation strategies as well as local economic development, given the low rate of domestic savings and high government expenditures. Remittances appear to be very promising as developing countries continue the search for additional sources of income to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. With the benefits of the remittances that migrant workers send back home, overseas …

He was able to help his family back in México by working in the cotton fields everyday. His payment was based on the amount of cotton he would pick up. He worked 6 years as a bracero for the same person. Mr. Ruíz didn’t know English during his time working as a bracero. After having a family in Mexico, Mr. Ruíz stayed there working as a brick-maker. Then, he became a politician, …
Constructing And Disrupting Ireland's Industrial Development Authority, Paul Donnelly
Constructing And Disrupting Ireland's Industrial Development Authority, Paul Donnelly

Actor-network theory is considered to have great potential for broadening and deepening our grasp of institutional work (LAWRENCE; SUDDABY, 2006). Given its focus on process, ANT offers a means to breathe life into the practices associated with institutionalization. With Callon’s (1986) four moments of translation as analytical lens, and with Ireland’s Industrial Development Authority as empirical example, I seek to address the concerns of Clegg and Machado da Silva (2009) by reconsidering “the role of agency, power, persistence and change in the process of institutionalization”.

Differences In Peer Perception Of Alcohol Use, Personal Alcohol Use, And Levels Of Intoxication Among Students At Virginia Commonwealth University From 2002 To 2004., William Evans
Theses and Dissertations
This study involves the examination of National Collegiate Health Assessment (NCHA) data collected by the VCU Wellness Resource Center. This study will compare trends in college student health behavior perceptions and personal activity regarding alcohol use, as self-reported via the NCHA data, with a particular focus on a comparison between 2002, which is the year that the Wellness Resource Center (then known as the Office of Health Promotion) first implemented an alcohol education campaign based upon a “social norms” theoretical framework, and 2004, after 18 months of intensive campaigning. Thus, the aim of the project is to examine the changes …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Though China Beat contributors come from around the globe, the blog’s editorial team is based at UC Irvine. For that reason, we take special pride in announcing that at last month’s Association for Asian Studies annual meeting, UCI Professor of Anthropology Susan Greenhalgh won the Joseph Levenson Prize for Best Book on China Post-1900. Professor Greenhalgh’s book, Just One Child: Science and Policy in Deng’s China, was published by the University of California Press in 2008, and attempts to answer several questions that have permeated her work as a population specialist during the era of the one-child policy:
