Historic And Modern Social Movements For Reparations: The National Coalition For Reparations In America (N’Cobra) And Its Antecedents, Adjoa Aiyetoro, Adrienne D. Davis
Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Faculty Research
Most of the legal scholarship on reparations for Blacks in America focuses on its legal or political viability. This literature has considered both procedural obstacles, such as statutes of limitations and sovereign immunity, as well as the substantive conception of a defensible cause of action. Indeed, Congressman John Conyers introduced H.R. 40, a bill to study reparations, in 1989 and every Congressional session since, and there have been three law suits that have received national attention. This Essay takes a different approach, considering reparations as a social movement with a rich and under-explored history. As Robin Kelley explains, such an …

Dissertations
Chapter 3.5 The Credit Lyonnais Application To limit the economic damage of State aid the Commission stated that the “aid should be proportional to the objectives in question and the amount of aid should be limited to the strict minimum needed for restructuring so that the recipient company itself makes a maximum contribution to the recovery plan” This complies with the 1994 R&R Report. The Commission decided in “examining a measure to assist the restructuring of a firm in difficulty, its overall assessment (was) to consider whether the common interest is served by the maintenance of the firm in business, …
From Trial To Triumph: Representations Of African Americans In Museum Exhibits, Derrick Brooms
From Trial To Triumph: Representations Of African Americans In Museum Exhibits, Derrick Brooms
Dissertations (2 year embargo)
In my dissertation, I examine contemporary exhibits about African American history and culture at six museums to explore issues of racial representation, collective identity, and cultural authority. I conduct a systematic two-part investigation of exhibition practices across Black-owned/operated and mainstream museums, one of each in three different cities (Chicago, IL; Milwaukee, WI; and Washington, DC). First, I explore the socio-historic discourses on race as played out in the museum medium and its implications for shaping collective identity. Second, I examine the use of exhibits and other visual mediums located within museums, in the process of representation wherein these visual media …

Selecting Success: Disconnected Youth’S Reading Choices, Eva Raison, Sandra Sajonas
Urban Library Journal
By examining a sample of books chosen by participants in Brooklyn Public Library’s Young Adult Pre-GED program, this article will explore characteristics of reading materials that appeal to out-of-school youth. Authors will share the selection process behind the creation of a special collection targeted to low-literacy young adults (16–24 years old). Using youth participants’ independent reading logs, we will compare what we expected students to enjoy reading with what youth chose to read. A discussion will include lessons learned about collection development for out-of-school youth and how libraries can improve access for struggling adolescent readers.

“I Feel Like I Could Do It Too”: A Paradigm Shift In An Urban Library Internship Program, Daren A. Graves, Doris Ann Sweet, Mary Mcgowan
Urban Library Journal
In the 2007/2008 academic year Simmons College Library put the life experiences of eight Boston high school students at the heart of an already established, IMLS-funded forty-hour library internship. The internship’s long standing goal was to create lifelong library ambassadors and future librarians, by teaching the students information literacy skills, introducing them to how a complex organization (the library) is organized and run, and imparting college and career skills. The learning paradigm conceived of the librarians as reciprocal learning and research partners, positioning the lived experiences and authentic interests of the students as central to the internship. The article describes …
Safety And Security In Urban Academic Libraries: A Risk Assessment Approach To Emergency Preparedness, Thomas Edgar Raffensperger
Safety And Security In Urban Academic Libraries: A Risk Assessment Approach To Emergency Preparedness, Thomas Edgar Raffensperger
Urban Library Journal
Academic libraries have developed a wide range of emergency preparedness policies, procedures, and training programs. Libraries have traditionally focused on the recovery of collections after an emergency. Risk assessment has focused on collections, largely as an outgrowth of valuation for insurance purposes and the core responsibility of libraries to safeguard collections. Risk assessment has rarely been systematically applied to personal safety and security. There is an anecdotal sense that urban academic libraries are subject to higher risk from property and violent crime than other academic libraries. This study examines the level of risk of property and violent crime using Clery …

Information sharing, dissemination, digital libraries, and repositories are not new concepts. Open Access Initiatives make digital information more accessible to users. Confidentiality and integrity of information cannot be ensured without a proper access management mechanism. This paper reviews available informatin on user authentications and authorization, and the authentication of digital materials is illustrated.

Updated Analysis Of Racial Segregation In Pulaski County Charter And Traditional Public Schools, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter
Arkansas Education Reports
In September of 2009, the Office for Education Policy (OEP) released a report titled “An Analysis of Charter Schools on Desegregation Efforts in Little Rock, Arkansas.” In this report, we presented data from the 2005 to 2009 schools years for students who transferred to open-enrollment charter schools in Pulaski County from the Little Rock School District (LRSD). The aim of this report was to show what impacts – if any – these transfers were having on the desegregation efforts of the LRSD. The motivation for this report was an ongoing legal debate about how charter schools impact desegregation, in which …
