A Comparison Of Maine’S Per Capita Spending, 1996-2006 To The Us And Other States, Ryan Boyd

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

The Great Recession of 2008-2010 is showing that the states and national government have spent too much. We need the vision of Thomas Friedman to move beyond our spending and planning habits of the past.1

In 2016, expenditures compared to 2006 will look very different, unlike the previous similarities of 1996 to 2006. This retraction, due to the recession and our government’s embracement of concerns about debt from policy wonks such as former US Comptroller David Walker, debt will have a significant affect on many populations of our society. Maine has been noted as being a state that looks after …

Evidence Of The Boyer Model Of Scholarship In Counselor Education, David J. Tobin, Jessica L. Bordonaro, Melissa M. Schmidt, Diana Hulse Jul 2010

Evidence Of The Boyer Model Of Scholarship In Counselor Education, David J. Tobin, Jessica L. Bordonaro, Melissa M. Schmidt, Diana Hulse

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

This study delineated how the Boyer (1990) model of scholarship has been implemented in counselor education. The taxonomy of scholarship was delineated: Scholarship of Discovery, Scholarship of Teaching, Scholarship of Application, and Scholarship of Integration. The Journal of Counseling and Development and Counselor Education and Supervision were examined from 2000 to 2008. Examples of scholarship from each journal were identified. Evidence of the Boyer model in premier counseling journals suggests a consistency of approach between this model and scholarly activities in counselor education. An expanded view of scholarship may have positive implications for scholarly activity in graduate education and pretenured …

Encouraging Student Wellness: An Expanded Role For Counselor Educators, Thomas Foster Jul 2010

Encouraging Student Wellness: An Expanded Role For Counselor Educators, Thomas Foster

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Graduate school can present as a time of both self-fulfillment and stress for students; students who lack psychosocial resources and must fulfill other life roles (e.g. employee, spouse, caregiver) during graduate school can experience significant stress levels that can interfere with their academic and personal life. However, students can make healthy choices about how to live, and over time, these choices can develop into a wellness lifestyle. The Wellness Cube Model (WCM) serves as an academic intervention with the purposes to: (a) infuse wellness content and experiences into a counseling program, (b) expose students to wellness, and (c) help both …

The authors introduce a pedagogical paradigm for international graduate students studying community counseling in the United States. The paradigm is based on previous research conducted by the authors on the educational experience of four international graduate students in a master‟s level community counseling program. The paradigm includes five phases and is in the form of a path with an emphasis on respecting the world cultures of students from other countries and addressing the special needs of international students studying in the United States. The paradigm contributes to the ongoing dialog related to the pedagogy of counselor education.

Race Obsession-Avoidance Paradox: A Model For Multicultural Training In Counselor Education, Rebecca A. Willow Jul 2010

Race Obsession-Avoidance Paradox: A Model For Multicultural Training In Counselor Education, Rebecca A. Willow

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The ability to discuss race-related issues is critical to multicultural competence. Counselor educators who address race-related issues in the classroom cite student resistance as a challenge to competency development. The Race Obsession-Avoidance Paradox (ROAParadox) identifies juxtaposed obsession and avoidance about race as a cultural phenomenon. The ROAParadox model was applied in a multicultural counseling course as a strategy for educating counseling students. Teaching scenarios illustrate the use of this model as a strategy to facilitate discussions on race relations and racism. Student responses and implications for teaching applications are provided along with recommendations for future research.

Perceptions Of Counseling Integration: A Survey Of Counselor Educators, Andre Marquis, Deborah Hudson, Mike Tursi

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Counselor educators were surveyed in order to assess their knowledge of integrative counseling approaches, their views regarding the importance of such approaches, and how much emphasis on integrative counseling is given in their counseling courses. A large majority of participants reported that integration in counseling is very important and that they emphasize it in their teaching of counseling theories and/or methods courses. Implications of these findings are discussed, including suggestions for counselor educators and counseling journals.

Challenges Of Cheap Resource Creation For Morphological Tagging, Jirka Hana, Anna Feldman Jul 2010

Challenges Of Cheap Resource Creation For Morphological Tagging, Jirka Hana, Anna Feldman

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We describe the challenges of resource creation for a resource-light system for morphological tagging of fusional languages (Feldman and Hana, 2010). The constraints on resources (time, expertise, and money) introduce challenges that are not present in development of morphological tools and corpora in the usual, resource intensive way.

Effect Of Teammates On Changes In Physical Activity In A Statewide Campaign, Tricia M. Leahey, Melissa M. Crane, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Brad A. Weinberg, Rajiv Kumar, Rena R. Wing Jul 2010

Effect Of Teammates On Changes In Physical Activity In A Statewide Campaign, Tricia M. Leahey, Melissa M. Crane, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Brad A. Weinberg, Rajiv Kumar, Rena R. Wing

Publications and Research

Objective—Most Americans do not meet physical activity recommendations. Statewide campaigns can effectively increase activity levels. Reported herein are physical activity outcomes from Shape Up Rhode Island (SURI) 2007, a statewide campaign to increase steps through team-based competition. Given the importance of social networks in behavior change, this paper focused on the effects of team and team characteristics on activity outcomes. Method—For 16-weeks, 5333 adults comprising 652 teams wore pedometers and reported their steps online. Results—Participants’ daily steps increased from 7029(3915) at baseline to 9393(5976) at SURI end (p<.001). There was a significant intraclass correlation for step change among team members (ICC=.09); thus, an individual’s change in steps was influenced by what team they were on. Moreover, baseline team characteristics predicted individual step change; being on a more active team was associated with greater increases in activity for individual members (p<.001), whereas being on a team with a broad range of steps was associated with smaller changes in activity for individual members (p=.02). Conclusion—These findings are the first to suggest that team members influence individual activity outcomes in team-based statewide campaigns. Future research should explore ways to use social network factors to enhance team-based physical activity programs.

Why Some Vocational Rehabilitation Clients Leave The System Early, Bethany Rigles, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Jul 2010

Why Some Vocational Rehabilitation Clients Leave The System Early, Bethany Rigles, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

Almost half of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) clients leave the system before completing services. This situation, called “premature exit,” includes cases when clients refuse to continue services or fail to cooperate, as well as when VR loses touch with clients because of inaccurate contact information. Premature exits are a problem for both clients and agencies. Clients who prematurely exit the system experience worse economic outcomes than clients who stay and become employed (Hayward & Schmidt-Davis, 2003). For agencies, premature exits translate into significant costs without positive employment outcomes. In 2006 alone, VR spent more than $207.5 million on cases closed as …

Exploring Online Sexually Explicit Material: What Is The Relationship To Sexual Coercion?, Valerie Gonsalves

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

With the popularity of the Internet, it is easy to access sexually explicit material. Past research has demonstrated that exposure to sexually explicit material in traditional formats (i.e. magazines and videos) may have an influence on male attitudes and behaviors towards females, but these effects appear to be minimal and dissipate over the long term. Though the body of literature examining Internet sexually explicit material is smaller, researchers have found little to no effects on attitudes or aggressive behaviors immediately after exposure. However, research regarding exposure to online sexually explicit material has not included forensically relevant variables.

Previous research has …

High-Frequency Electrically Stimulated Skeletal Muscle Contractions Increase P70S6k Phosphorylation Independent Of Known Igf-I Sensitive Signaling Pathways, Sarah Witkowski, Richard M. Lovering, Espen E. Spangenburg Jul 2010

High-Frequency Electrically Stimulated Skeletal Muscle Contractions Increase P70S6k Phosphorylation Independent Of Known Igf-I Sensitive Signaling Pathways, Sarah Witkowski, Richard M. Lovering, Espen E. Spangenburg

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) is hypothesized to be a critical upstream regulator of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-regulated protein synthesis with muscle contraction. We utilized a mouse model that expresses a skeletal muscle specific dominant-negative IGF-I receptor to investigate the role of IGF-I signaling of protein synthesis in response to unilateral lengthening contractions (10 sets, 6 repetitions, 100. Hz) at 0 and 3. h following the stimulus. Our results indicate that one session of high frequency muscle contractions can activate mTOR signaling independent of signaling components directly downstream of the receptor.

Balancing, Generic Polls And Midterm Congressional Elections, Joseph Bafumi, Robert S. Erikson, Christopher Wlezien Jul 2010

Balancing, Generic Polls And Midterm Congressional Elections, Joseph Bafumi, Robert S. Erikson, Christopher Wlezien

Dartmouth Scholarship

One mystery of U.S. politics is why the president’s party regularly loses congressional seats at midterm. Although presidential coattails and their withdrawal provide a partial explanation, coattails cannot account for the fact that the presidential party typically performs worse than normal at midterm. This paper addresses the midterm vote separate from the presidential year vote, with evidence from generic congressional polls conducted during midterm election years. Polls early in the midterm year project a normal vote result in November. But as the campaign progresses, vote preferences almost always move toward the out party. This shift is not a negative referendum …

Deconstructing The Time-Out: What Do Mothers Understand About A Common Disciplinary Procedure?, Amy K. Drayton Jul 2010

Deconstructing The Time-Out: What Do Mothers Understand About A Common Disciplinary Procedure?, Amy K. Drayton

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Problem behavior is extremely common throughout childhood, and time-out (TO) is one of the most common disciplinary tactics used by parents to address problem behavior. However, despite the prevalence of use and five decades of research demonstrating the efficacy of time-out, parents rate time-out as one of the least useful behavior modification techniques. This discrepancy between parental opinion and empirical data may be due to the fact that all research conducted thus far has used adults highly trained in empirically-supported time-out procedures. No research has examined the degree of similarity between time-out conducted by untrained parents to empirically-supported time-out procedures. …

Emotional Intimacy, Coparenting, And Family Work: A Latent Class Growth Analysis, Adam Michael Galovan Jul 2010

Emotional Intimacy, Coparenting, And Family Work: A Latent Class Growth Analysis, Adam Michael Galovan

Theses and Dissertations

From a family systems theoretical view, this paper uses both variable-oriented and person-oriented research approaches to examine parental marriage as a dynamic, interdependent system, and extends the literature by examining parental marriage across a 15 year time span. Employing latent growth curve analysis of 490 mother-father dyads from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, this study considers multiple aspects of the relationship husbands and wives have together as spouses (emotional intimacy), parents (ideas about discipline and a child-centered vs. adult-centered orientation to childrearing), coparents (agreement regarding parenting beliefs and discipline), and household managers (agreement on the …

Return To Unfinished Business: Re-Energizing U.S. Nuclear Arms Policy, William T. Eliason Jul 2010

Return To Unfinished Business: Re-Energizing U.S. Nuclear Arms Policy, William T. Eliason

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Today's international environment characterized in nuclear threat terms as having increasing concerns about the potential for terrorist or non-state use of nuclear devices and a decline in the likelihood of the original nuclear weapon states engaging each other in a nuclear war remains in search of a path away from the fear of nuclear attack some twenty years after the end of the Cold War. This research dissertation will seek to answer the question of how best to reestablish a nuclear arms control regime. This dissertation argues that the international environment has fundamentally changed since the end of the Cold …

(Wp 2010-03) Subsidizing Religious Participation Through Groups: A Model Of The "Megachurch" Strategy For Growth, Marc Von Der Ruhr, Joseph P. Daniels

Economics Working Papers

Either despite or because of their non-traditional approach, megachurches have grown significantly in the United States since 1980. This paper models religious participation as an imperfect public good which, absent intervention, yields suboptimal participation by members from the church’s perspective. Megachurches address this problem by employing secular based group activities to subsidize religious participation in an effort to increase attendees’ religious investment. This strategy not only allows megachurches to attract and retain new members when many traditional churches are losing members, but also results in higher levels of individual satisfaction thereby allowing the megachurch to raise levels of commitment and …
