Economic Development, Religion, And The Conditions For Domestic Terrorism, Brandon M. Boylan
Economic Development, Religion, And The Conditions For Domestic Terrorism, Brandon M. Boylan
Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies
This study examines the conditions that facilitate domestic terrorism. Research on domestic terrorism has been sparse in comparison to studies that examine terrorism as a general phenomenon and transnational terrorism in particular. Most researchers find that a country’s level of economic development and religious composition do not help explain its experience with terrorism. I examine if these claims apply to terrorist activity at the domestic level to explore the extent to which domestic terrorism differs from other forms of terrorism. Specifically, I employ a negative binomial regression model with time-series, cross-sectional (TSCS) data in order to observe if economic development …

The Importance Of Ecological Security For Protective Security: A Case Study Of Northern China And The Impact Of Water Scarcity On Food Security, Molly A. Walton
Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies
China’s surging growth rate of nearly 10% over the past 20 years has accelerated the nation to the forefront of the global economy. However, this growth has been predicated upon the destruction and depletion of the natural environment. Consequently, China is beginning to experience the deterioration of its ecological capital, particularly in regards to its water supply. This paper seeks to evaluate the impact of water scarcity in Northern China on the Chinese Communist Party’s policy of food self-sufficiency by utilizing the protective security component of Amartya Sen’s development as freedom framework. It is argued that ecological security is a …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Among Online Social Network Usage, Intimacy, Social Comparison Tendencies, And Relationship Satisfaction, Matthew Hand
Doctoral Dissertations
The popularity of online social networks prompts an examination of the effects these websites have on intimate relationships. While these networks have received a considerable amount of attention in mainstream media, peer-reviewed research examining the effects these websites have on users is sparse. By their very nature, online social networks involve the creation and maintenance of interpersonal relationships. As such, the effect of these networks on relationships may be profound and with the paucity of research on the topic, the relationship between online social networks and interpersonal relationships is an important area of study. The present study sought to examine …

The team started operations on 05:30 at the morning, everyone received briefing from the team leader. MU-07 was implementing a regime of 30 minutes work and 10 minutes break in this area, as it is a difficult and steep sloping task. It was 08:15 that the deminer [Victim No.2] detected a signal in his clearance lane and then identified that it was a POMZ mine after discovering a part of it. He called his team leader that he has found a POMZ mine and partially discovered it. During the investigation, he initiated the mine, causing it to detonate and the …

Tryin' To Get My Mojo Workin', Emily Ford
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
The article discusses the reasons why librarians in the U.S. get burned out in their jobs and lose their librarian mojo. It states that librarians are dependent on systems which make them prone to systems failure while most libraries rely on tools and technologies instead of their skills and subsequently lose their mojo. It suggests to attend the American Library Association's (ALA) annual meeting and meet other librarians and get inspired about librarianship.
Philadelphia Fed Forecasting Surveys: Their Value For Research, Dean D. Croushore
Philadelphia Fed Forecasting Surveys: Their Value For Research, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia has conducted both the Survey of Professional Forecasters and the Livingston Survey for 20 years. Both surveys of private-sector forecasters provide researchers, central bankers, news media, and the public with detailed forecasts of major macroeconomic variables. The surveys have proved helpful for people who are planning for the future, and they have also provided useful input into the decisions of policymakers at the Federal Reserve and elsewhere. In this article, Dean Croushore provides an overview of the surveys and discusses the ways in which researchers have used the surveys.

We argue that the transition to Chinese authority has not undermined democratic governance in Hong Kong and that voice and accountability have improved since the handover. We seek to explain this surprising result and conclude with a discussion of the implications of our findings for China, Taiwan, and cross-strait relations.

How Yoopers See The Future Of Their Communities: Why Residents Leave Or Stay In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Jessica D. Ulrich
Carsey Publications
According to a Community and Environment in Rural America survey, Michigan's Upper Peninsula residents, often called "Yoopers," said that ties to community and the area's natural beauty were significant factors for those who planned on staying in this rural area, which comprises about a third of Michigan's land mass but only 4 percent of its population. Those planning on leaving cited employment opportunities and energy costs as the most important factors in their decision.

Cornerstone 3 Reports : Interdisciplinary Informatics
The purpose of this grant is to develop an interdisciplinary course in Informatics and Natural Computation that would service undergraduate computer, natural, and physical science majors. Informatics is the science of information, the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems. Informatics studies the structure, algorithms, behavior, and interactions of natural and artificial systems that store, process, access and communicate information. Natural computing refers to a collection of disciplines that unite nature with computing in three distinct ways:
1. Nature serves as a source of inspiration for the development of computational tools or systems that are used for …
