Emotional Regulation In Online Customer Service : Testing A Model Of Emotional Labor, Vivian A. Woo
Emotional Regulation In Online Customer Service : Testing A Model Of Emotional Labor, Vivian A. Woo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Emotional labor has yet to be studied in online customer service. Aspects of Grandey’s (2000) model of emotion regulation were tested with a survey study on 28 customer service workers for an online gaming company. Antecedents of interaction expectations and individual factors failed to predict emotional labor. For individual long-term consequences, surface acting was linked positively to emotional exhaustion and negatively with well-being. Implications for emotional labor research in computer-mediated communication are discussed.

Toward Innovative, Liveable, And Prosperous Asian Megacities Gawad Kalinga: Innovation In The City (And Beyond), Raymund B. Habaradas, Martin Lorenzo Aquino
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Gawad Kalinga (GK) is an innovative approach that could be the key to solving poverty and homelessness in the Philippines. It is potentially an effective, sustainable, and replicable model that could address the problem of urban housing in the developing world. Its most important innovation is a shift in paradigm of what community development ought to be. Instead of looking at members of the poor communities as passive actors (i.e. as mere recipients of donations or as beneficiaries of support programs), GK considers them as active participants in the development process. Through the help of the caretaker team and the …

"A Good Sized Pot": Early 19th Century Planting Pots From Gore Place, Waltham, Massachusetts, Rita A. Deforest
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis looked at the elite status of cultivating gentlemen at the site of the Gore Place greenhouse through the medium of planting pots. The goal of this thesis was to analyze the planting pot remains and to subsequently answer three questions: what kinds of activities were performed in the greenhouse, who was conducting those activities, and most importantly, how they played in to Christopher Gore's self presentation as having elite status. This project analyzed over 2,000 pot sherds found during the excavation of the 1806 Gore Place greenhouse. The outcome of a minimum vessel count of the planting pots …
The Interaction Of Motivational Climate And Self-Determination In Examining Commitment Level In Female Youth Sport, Kyle Player
The Interaction Of Motivational Climate And Self-Determination In Examining Commitment Level In Female Youth Sport, Kyle Player
All Theses
Research has shown that many benefits can be derived from youth sports. Practitioners need to be equipped with the skills to provide the best youth sport experience and retain participants. This is of particular importance for females because of their tendency to dropout at higher rates than males. The purpose of this research is to describe the effect that coach-created motivational climate has on female youth athletes' self-determination and goal orientation and how these variables affect their commitment level pre to post season. Research has shown that a coach initiated mastery climate will have a positive effect on girls' self …

All Theses
Students play a vital role in the leadership and delivery of campus recreation programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate best practices related to effective student development techniques in high quality campus recreation programs affiliated with NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association). NIRSA , in collaboration with CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards), educates collegiate recreational sports professionals on the importance of providing a rich learning environment for student employees (nirsa.org, 2010). A campus recreation professional can put student development theory to practice and the student employee can gain effective professional development.
Data were collected through a …
Fantasy Football: Analyzing Fantasy Themes In America's Rhetorical Pastime, Frankie Christ
Fantasy Football: Analyzing Fantasy Themes In America's Rhetorical Pastime, Frankie Christ
All Theses
Fantasy football has emerged as a male-bonding experience of our online age. In understanding the formation of a rich rhetorical community, a close examination of how these fantasy football communities represent the larger culture is required. This thesis uses Ernest Bormann's theoretical framework of fantasy theme analysis to examine how the sharing of group fantasies creates a symbolic convergence. Once symbolic convergence has occurred, group members are then able to share rhetorical visions that shape their world's view. In the case of this thesis, Bormann's methods have been modified to better understand the small group dynamics of fantasy football participants. …
The 2010 Campus Climate Survey: Status Characteristics As Predictors Of Campus Climate Perceptions, Kelly Linker
The 2010 Campus Climate Survey: Status Characteristics As Predictors Of Campus Climate Perceptions, Kelly Linker
All Theses
Diversity issues are still real and relevant concerns for organizations; university campuses are no exception. This study surveyed the faculty and staff at Clemson University in South Carolina about their experiences with diversity issues and the campus climate. The research question evaluated what influenced employees to have a negative perception of the campus climate. In addition to status characteristics, a respondent's level of cultural competence and exposure to harassment and discrimination were considered. A respondent's race was found to be the most influential of the status characteristics while experiencing harassment or discrimination was also significant. Cultural competence was significant in …

A Leisure Education Program For Postsecondary Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Madalyn Weber
All Theses
For individuals with intellectual disabilities finding and taking part in leisure experiences can be difficult without appropriate knowledge and skills. This study examined the use of a leisure education program with students enrolled in a post-secondary education program located on the campus of a mid-size southeastern university. This postsecondary educational program is designed to teach independent living and job skills to people ages 18-23 who have an intellectual disability. The -Leisure Ability Model is the conceptual framework for this study. Leisure attitude was measured through a revised version of the Leisure Attitude Measure; it assessed three components: cognitive, behavioral, and …
Sustainable Urban Transport: The Issue Of Equity In The Emerging Bric Countries, Tamara Tavares
Sustainable Urban Transport: The Issue Of Equity In The Emerging Bric Countries, Tamara Tavares
All Theses
Although sustainable frameworks for transportation have been widely discussed in the transportation planning field in recent decades, the issue of equity in transportation systems is still relatively unexplored in comparison to the other pillars of sustainability. Globally, the concept of equity gains different nuances in developed and developing countries, and have yet new implications when considering fast emerging nations. The objective of this paper is to investigate how transit policies in fast emerging economies are used to distribute equitable access to benefits and opportunities; and to derive lessons that can orient future cohorts of emerging cities and countries to use …
Who Is Worth What? Judge And Advisor Characteristics In A Paid-Advice Judgment Scenario, Benjamin Slade
Who Is Worth What? Judge And Advisor Characteristics In A Paid-Advice Judgment Scenario, Benjamin Slade
All Theses
When making a decision, people often receive advice before settling on a particular course of action. Decision makers exhibit a spectrum of responses to advice, ranging from total rejection to complete acceptance. The purpose of this study is to examine predictors of advice use within a Judge Advisor System (JAS: Sniezek & Buckley, 1995). Prior research has examined a variety of task characteristics, advisor characteristics, and decision maker characteristics (e.g. Bonaccio, 2007; Gino & Moore, 2007; Yaniv & Kleinberger, 2000). In this study, judge characteristics including confidence, accuracy, prior task knowledge, and other individual differences are examined. Advisor characteristics such …

Examining The Cognitive And Somatic Manifestation Of Competitive State Anxiety In Special Olympics Athletes, Emilia Sue Boeschen
Theses and Dissertations
The experiences of cognitive and somatic competitive state anxiety in Special Olympics athletes and their family members or significant others was explored. This study used a multimethod approach to examining this construct to learn how performance anxiety is best understood in these athletes, who were identified on the basis of their eligibility to participate in the Special Olympics as determined by the inclusion criteria set by the state in which the research was conducted. Two methods were used including: completion of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory by both athletes and parents, coaches, volunteers, or significant others prior to competition: and …
Motion Events In Seri: Applying Talmy's Typologies, April E. Sachs
Motion Events In Seri: Applying Talmy's Typologies, April E. Sachs
Theses and Dissertations
Leonard Talmy's typologies of motion hypothesize that in a language's depiction of Motion events, the semantic components of the event will find characteristic expression in consistent morphosyntactic structures. In the motion-actuating typology, the main verb in an event of Motion will characteristically conflate Motion with either the Path, Figure, or Manner of Motion. In the motion-framing typology, the Path component will characteristically appear in either the verb or the satellite to the verb. These typologies, proposed in their most cited forms in Talmy (1985) and Talmy (1991), have been applied over the years to dozens of languages, with varying degrees …

Portland Public Schools Enrollment Forecasts, 2010-11 To 2020-21, Based On October 2009 Enrollments, Portland State University. Population Research Center
School District Enrollment Forecast Reports
The Portland Public School District (PPS) enrolled 45,592 K-12 students in Fall 2009, an increase of 568 students (1.3 percent) from Fall 2008. This growth breaks the string of 12 consecutive years of enrollment losses and represents the District’s biggest growth since 1992. Growth was concentrated at the elementary level (K-5th grade), which added 577 students (2.6 percent). District-wide secondary levels experienced relatively stable enrollments, with a loss of 55 students (0.6 percent) in middle school grades (6th-8th), and growth of 46 students (0.4 percent) in high school grades (9th-12th). The medium growth scenario forecast prepared last year, based on …
Immigration And Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring The Immigrant Paradox, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson
Immigration And Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring The Immigrant Paradox, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Recent evidence indicates that contrary to some criminological theories, immigrants are less violent than native-born Americans. The relationship between immigrant status and reduced violence appears to hold at both the individual and neighborhood levels of analysis. This phenomenon has been referred to as the immigrant or Latino paradox. It has been suggested, although rarely examined, that cultural differences and strong social networks among immigrants account for their lower violence rates. These factors even appear strong enough to counterbalance the crime-promoting effects of economic disadvantage. This study investigates whether such patterns extend to intimate partner violence. Consistent with research on other …
The Effects Of Chlordiazepoxide On Resurgence In Male Rats: A Preliminary Investigation, Marc Alden Weeden
The Effects Of Chlordiazepoxide On Resurgence In Male Rats: A Preliminary Investigation, Marc Alden Weeden
Dissertations
Resurgence is defined as the recurrence of a previously but no longer reinforced behavior when a more recently reinforced behavior undergoes extinction. The present study investigated the effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP), a member of the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, on the resurgence of lever pressing responses emitted by male Sprague-Dawley rats. The general procedure was as follows: An operant (left lever presses) was reinforced and subsequently extinguished. Then, a second operant (right lever presses) was reinforced. Finally, 0, 1, 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg doses of CDP were administered via intraperitoneal injections to groups of nine animals each …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the aftermath of the economic crisis of 2008, it became evident that Nevada’s economy felt pains greater than that of the rest of the country. With sinking property values, opportunities may exist for the hotel investor. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the risks and benefits of acquiring a hotel property through the instrumentality of a hotel feasibility report. The literature review includes an evaluation of hotel feasibility analysis, its historical context, criticisms, and recommendations for performing effective studies. The case study part of this paper investigates the broader implications of hotel acquisition in the current recessionary …
The Determinants Of U.S. Foreign Aid Allocation To Sub-Saharan Africa In The Pre-Terror And Post-Terror Security Environments, Brendan Mark Morris
The Determinants Of U.S. Foreign Aid Allocation To Sub-Saharan Africa In The Pre-Terror And Post-Terror Security Environments, Brendan Mark Morris
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Foreign aid has become a growing importance of U.S. foreign policy in the last few years. As the U.S. is committing more aid towards the developing world, questions over the purpose of this expansion of aid have emerged. While the traditional perspectives on the purpose of foreign aid of either serving the strategic interests of the donor or the development interest of the recipients are given as potential reasoning behind this allocation of aid, the impact of the U.S.’s involvement in the War on Terror may have more of a significant impact on the U.S.’s current foreign aid allocation. Foreign …

Initial Development Of A Healthy Living Curriculum Within Family Behavior Therapy For Substance Abuse, Holly B. Lapota
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A mother referred for child maltreatment and substance abuse treatment after her son tested positive for methamphetamines at birth participated in an in-home Family Behavior Therapy-Healthy Lifestyle intervention to eliminate substance use, improve parenting behaviors, lose weight, and develop better exercise habits. Twenty sessions were completed in 6 months that targeted familial communication, self-control, goal setting with contingency management, job getting skills, and stimulus control techniques. Upon termination from treatment, the participant’s self-report and urine testing was consistent with substance cessation, and she evidenced substantial improvements in her level of stress, family communication and relationships, and child maltreatment potential. She …
Cascading Simulation: A Critical Perspective On Barack Obama‘S Foreign Policy During The 2008 Presidential Election, Ian P. Beier
Cascading Simulation: A Critical Perspective On Barack Obama‘S Foreign Policy During The 2008 Presidential Election, Ian P. Beier
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Entering the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama had little to no foreign policy experience. On face, this would seem to make Obama an unlikely choice for President. Yet, he was able to defeat Hilary Clinton and John McCain, the two candidates with significant foreign policy experience. My thesis examines Barack Obama's speech "A World That Stands as One" as a case study for understanding how simulation operates in the context of presidential campaigns. Using Robert Entman's theory of "cascading activation," I develop a theory of "cascading simulation," arguing that image construction descends downward from the president through the media. In …

Objectives: This study examined the relationship between substance use disorder (SUD) and intimate partner violence screening (IPV) and management practices in the emergency department (ED). Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of adult ED patients presenting to an urban, tertiary care teaching hospital over a 4-month period. An automated electronic data abstraction process identified consecutive patients and retrieved visit characteristics, including results of three violence screening questions, demographic data, triage acuity, time of visit, and ICD-9 diagnosis codes. Data on management were collected using a standardized abstraction tool by two reviewers masked to the study question. Multivariate logistic regression …
An Analysis Of The Equity Of Utah’S Public School Funding System, Garrick Peterson
An Analysis Of The Equity Of Utah’S Public School Funding System, Garrick Peterson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
There has not been an equity study of the public school funding allocation system, in the state of Utah, since 1990. The purpose of the study was to conduct an analysis of the equity of the Utah state funding allocation system for K-12 education including a trend analysis for the decade 2000-2009. The conceptual framework for the analysis applies four broad concepts of equity framed by Kern Alexander; (1) communitative equity, (2) distributive equity, (3) restitutive equity, and (4) positivism. The analysis of the Utah State funding system used Berne and Stiefel's methodology and included commonly used statistical measures of …
High School Student Interests In Architecture, Construction, And Engineering Education, Krishna P. Kisi
High School Student Interests In Architecture, Construction, And Engineering Education, Krishna P. Kisi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It is a common and widely held belief that the greatest influencing factor for high school students to enter an architecture-, construction-, or engineering-education program is because either their parents, relatives or friends work or have worked in the industry. However, there is little research that supports this belief. The focus of this research was to analyze characteristics and academic interests of Clark County School District (CCSD) Career and Technical Academies (CATA) students enrolled in architecture, construction and engineering (ACE) curricula.
This research analyzed data collected from a survey conducted by CCSD of their students enrolled in ACE courses. Comprehensive …

The Experience Of Feelings In Depression, Noelle L. Lefforge
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Emotions, such as sadness, guilt, and irritability, are at the core of depressive symptoms and suggest a need for an in-depth understanding of feelings, the experiential component of emotion, during depression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the experience of emotion in depressed participants and find out if these experiences are similar to those of nondepressed participants. Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) was used to sample five depressed and four nondepressed participants for four days and then in a controlled setting while watching positive, negative, and neutral film clips. Due to the limited sample size, this study was …
