Payback: The 1920/1921 Agib Sltu Strike In The Dublin Building Industry, John Hogan Aug 2010

Payback: The 1920/1921 Agib Sltu Strike In The Dublin Building Industry, John Hogan

Articles

In late 1920 a strike began in the building industry in Dublin that was to last until June of the following year. It effectively shut down building sites all across the city. The primary protagonists involved in the dispute were the Ancient Guild of Incorporated Brick and Stonelayers Trade Union (AGIBSLTU) and the building employers association, the Dublin Building Trades Employers’ Association (DBTEA). Both of these bodies had fought a bitterly contested lockout 15 years before, which had almost destroyed the union. In 1920, by dint of wider economic circumstances, and a belligerent determination, the union was to have the …

Social Identity Development: Africans To United States, Claire Halverson Phd, Professor Aug 2010

Social Identity Development: Africans To United States, Claire Halverson Phd, Professor

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

There are a plethora of racial identity development models based on experiences of racial minorities in the United States which Halverson and Ken Williams use in their Social Identity class. None of these models describe the experience of immigrants and long-term residents of color from Asia, So America, and Africa. Halverson and Williams interviewed 25 Black and Arab Africans who have lived in the United States in order to understand if there is a pattern of identity development for this population that could be replicated in a model. Based on these interviews, they developed a model which they named the …

Learning From Homestay Hosts, Alison Swartz Mph Candidate, Program Assistant, Jesse Delaughter Ma, Assistant Program Director Aug 2010

Learning From Homestay Hosts, Alison Swartz Mph Candidate, Program Assistant, Jesse Delaughter Ma, Assistant Program Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

Homestay hosts play a pivotal role in many study abroad programs, including all of ours at IHP. We know that homestays are an important part of the learning experience for our students. We hear it anecdotally from alumni and read generally positive reviews of homestays in student evaluations. We talk about homestays as a program element that contributes to learning and fosters intercultural exchange, but we don’t really know what students are learning from their hosts or what kind of exchange is occurring. We have not typically incorporated hosts into the core of the academic program in the way that …

New Lines Of Inquiry: Arts-Based Research For Bridging Cultures, Sarah Brock Ma, Academic Director Aug 2010

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

This paper explores the implications for arts-based research (ABR) methods in fostering cross-cultural dialogue in international study. It reviews the academic arguments for and against the use of arts-based methodologies in qualitative research where more traditional, methodologies in the social sciences are combined with creative inquiry – narrative, poetic, dance, and visual forms of inquiry, for example – as well as the technical challenges and benefits associated with drawing on the humanities and arts as primary modes of inquiry; it explores the relevance and potential for ABR within the broader context of the study and use of the arts and …

Giving Voice To Our Students And Partners: From Principles To Actions, Ana Rita Diaz-Munoz Ma, Academic Director Aug 2010

Giving Voice To Our Students And Partners: From Principles To Actions, Ana Rita Diaz-Munoz Ma, Academic Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

The principle of reciprocity guides our daily work: the idea that we are giving something back to the community in order to make a difference. We try not only to implement it, but pass it on to our students.

The core of our work as educators is possible thanks to the relationship with the host communities and organizations with which we work. This is the reason why it is crucial to find ways to give back to those organizations that work to improve the community.

Based on a dialog with students, colleagues and partners, we intend to answer a few …

The Anatomy Of Conflict, Lahcen Haddad Phd, Academic Director Aug 2010

The Anatomy Of Conflict, Lahcen Haddad Phd, Academic Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

The need for peace in today’s world has become an existential issue for humanity. Without a sense of shared earth and its resources and a shared humanity governed by universal and local values, the human race seems to be more threatened with a crippling propensity for self-destruction than ever before. Some theories, systems of thought even religious currents like Marxism, fascism, jihadi Islam, crusading Christianity, expansionist Zionism think that conflict is fundamental to History inasmuch as it allows for justification of the self through the use of power. For Marxism, struggle as conflict between classes is the engine that drives …

Where Do We Go From Here: The Intersection Of Culture, Communication, And Technology, Mokhtar Bouba Ma, Med, Instructional Technologist, Sora Friedman Phd, Associate Professor And Degree Chair

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

SIT has long been involved with the nexus between culture and communications. Historically, this has caused us to ask how we can “properly” and “effectively” navigate in cultures that are foreign to us. More recently, however, communication platforms are changing and therefore, we see a rising need for rethinking some of the cross cultural models in use. This session will thus explore the changing nexus between cultures, communication, and technology.

Our context will consider questions such as how students’ experiences are different because of increased use of technology, how social media affects cross cultural experiences, and the degree to which …

Collaborate To Succeed: Implementing New Reference Services With Splat, Memo Cordova, Amy Vecchione

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Libraries face shrinking budgets, increased use, and user demand for trending resources. This makes it difficult for librarians to find the time to keep up with innovative technological tools and social media (SM) developments. SPLAT (Special Projects Library Action Team) offers up a new model for enhancing library reference services. SPLAT is supported by the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL), the state agency responsible for assisting libraries. The members of SPLAT are innovation representatives, comprised of library staff who search and experiment with SM trends and online tools, learn, and share the best ways to integrate them into the reference …

The Design Of Specifications For The Development Of Broadcast English Materials In Academic Listening/Speaking Courses, Amy Barlow Aug 2010

The Design Of Specifications For The Development Of Broadcast English Materials In Academic Listening/Speaking Courses, Amy Barlow

Theses and Dissertations

ESL students in academic listening/speaking courses often listen to long audio recordings similar to a lecture or other academic passages. When listening to these passages, students can lose their interest which impedes their learning of new strategies for understanding academic language. Students in the Level Four Listening/Speaking classes at Brigham Young University's English Language Center (ELC), under the previous curriculum, would experience this challenge. All of the passages were available only in audio and were long in duration. The students would lose interest and improve little in their listening skills. Under the new curriculum at the ELC, students in Academic …

Improving Undergraduate Education In Psychology Using An End-Of-Major Standardized Assessment And A Teaching Resources Wiki, David L. Mason Aug 2010

Improving Undergraduate Education In Psychology Using An End-Of-Major Standardized Assessment And A Teaching Resources Wiki, David L. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, appeals for improving the teaching of psychology at the post-secondary level have focused on increasing teacher training and motivation. However, wide-scale success may be limited because both approaches involve significant demands on teachers' time. I describe two recommendations that may improve teaching while requiring minimal time investment from individual teachers. The first is the development of an end-of-major assessment taken by undergraduate psychology majors that would provide valuable feedback to teachers on which areas of the curriculum need improvement. The second recommendation is to create a new database of research on teaching and learning that focuses on streamlining relevant …

Demand-Side Programs To Stimulate Adoption Of Broadband: What Works?, James Prieger, Janice A. Hauge Aug 2010

Demand-Side Programs To Stimulate Adoption Of Broadband: What Works?, James Prieger, Janice A. Hauge

School of Public Policy Working Papers

We examine the evidence available on the efficacy of demand-side programs intended to stimulate broadband adoption. We review studies that attempt to measure results. Our suggestions for future program evaluations are to include cost-benefit analysis as a standard part of program review and to make clear that the purpose of evaluation is to assess progress made toward the ultimate policy goals rather than the program’s proximate implementation goals. Appropriate data must be collected to draw conclusions, and appropriate statistical methods must be used to determine the causal impacts of a program. This has rarely been done to date.

Tales From The Field: The Right Mix Of Theory, Practice, And Soft Skills For Educating Digital Library Leaders, Cory K. Lampert, Krystyna Matusiak Aug 2010

Tales From The Field: The Right Mix Of Theory, Practice, And Soft Skills For Educating Digital Library Leaders, Cory K. Lampert, Krystyna Matusiak

Library Faculty Presentations

Technology skills have entered the LIS curriculum, but an overlooked variable in employability is often the perception of graduates’ soft skills. Communication skills, consensus-building and strategic thinking are critical to employers and by integrating coursework, internship experience, and networking opportunities as part of the core educational experience new graduates can set themselves apart as they enter the workforce. Research shows that programs that most effectively prepare future digital librarians are those that complement theory with interdisciplinary practice by developing partnerships and offer mentoring opportunities. This paper presents two perspectives identifying strategies to help develop leadership skills for the digital library …

The Freshest Kids In China, George Zhi Zhao

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

R16 at the Shanghai World Expo

June 19, 2010 I hear the voice of the late James Brown shouting over the booming speakers, and I watch a crowd of dancers move and contort to every minute rhythm and sound that is being controlled and manipulated by the DJ. The energy in the air is tense, as different b-boys (breakdancers) take turns stepping inside a circle of bodies, all asserting themselves in back-to-back solo performances of gravity-defying sequences of dance movements. The competitive performance of breakdancing happens all over the world, in metropolises ranging from New York City to Tokyo, from …

City Of Las Vegas, Department Of Building And Safety: Valuation Based Fee Schedule Analysis, Darcy Adelbai-Hurd, Vicki L. Brown, Josh Turley, Mary Ann Weidner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The City of Las Vegas Building and Safety Department (B & S) is being forced to make a number of difficult decisions regarding the structure of fees charged for the various services it provides. Like many building departments nationwide, B & S is experiencing the financial impact of the current economic decline affecting the construction industry. These fees directly affect B & S’ ability to staff the department in a manner that enables them to deliver an adequate level of service. With construction permits issued by B & S plummeting from an all-time high of 19,147 in 2004 to 5,093 …

The Case For Increased Cross-Agency Data Sharing In The State Of Nevada, Richard Entringer, Tina Jara, Alysia Peters, Steve Price

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

According to a July 2010 survey conducted by CNBC Nevada ranks 34th in its quality of life. Contributing to this low ranking are remarkable statistics that rank Nevada as the highest state in the nation regarding the percentage of 18 to 24 years olds who are not high school graduates and for 16 to 19 year olds who are not in school and not working. In addition, Nevada currently has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 14%. Recognizing the need to increase the education and work skill levels for Nevada’s youth, and in an effort to remediate unacceptable …

Coping And Assumptive World Views: Comparing Parents Of Murdered Children And Parents Of Missing/Returned Children In The Management Of Their Grief, Miriam Joy Anderson Aug 2010

Coping And Assumptive World Views: Comparing Parents Of Murdered Children And Parents Of Missing/Returned Children In The Management Of Their Grief, Miriam Joy Anderson

Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship between psychological coping, religious coping, and assumptive world views of parents of murdered children and parents of missing/returned children. The latter group refers to parents who had a missing child who was returned prior to participating in the study. A sample of 82 parents of murdered children and 14 parents of missing/returned children completed a series of self-report measures assessing grief, coping, and assumptive world views. Due to statistical power limitations in the missing/returned group, proposed hypotheses were examined using only data from parents of murdered children. The hypothesis that longer time since the event …

Emotional Response Patterns And Emotional Numbing In Adult Female Victims Of Sexual Assault With Ptsd, Tristan A. Robinson Aug 2010

Emotional Response Patterns And Emotional Numbing In Adult Female Victims Of Sexual Assault With Ptsd, Tristan A. Robinson

Dissertations

DSM symptoms of emotional numbing appear to have a major impact on the course and outcome of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet the construct definition of emotional numbing itself has not been clearly established. Two opposing conceptualizations of this construct have been proposed in the traumatic stress literature. One holds numbing to be a form of non-effortful emotional avoidance, akin to dissociation, that results in diminished responsiveness to emotional stimuli in general (Foa, Zinbarg, & Rothbaum, 1992; Foa & Hearst-Ikeda, 1996). The other suggests that numbing entails a deficit in responsiveness to positive emotional stimuli but not to negative emotional …
