The purpose of this study was to examine if anxiety diagnoses were associated with increased risk for suicidality and to examine if comorbid anxiety and depression diagnoses have a synergistic effect on suicidality. In a sub-analysis, we assessed associations between anxiety and/or depression symptoms (versus diagnoses) with suicidality in order to inform a future study. Completed at the Burlingame Center for Psychiatric Research and Education at the Institute of Living (IOL) in Hartford, CT, this quantitative, cross-sectional study involved 20,823 adult inpatients admitted for psychiatric care from 2000-2009. This qualitative study explored the subjective experiences of the transition to college among first generation Latinas as well as their caregiver's subjective understanding of the student's family role and the changes that occurred in the family once the student entered college. This study explored how Latino cultural values influence the Latina students' understanding of their family role and the influence of cultural phenomena on the transition to college. Data for this research were gathered from 12 individual interviews; 6 interviews conducted with alumnae from Mount Holyoke College and 6 selected caregivers. This study explores the role of alcohol in college age women along specific developmental transitions. Alcohol use and abuse is rampant on college campuses nationwide yet most students discontinue such use with the onset of adulthood. Given this high period of use in young adults, this research attempts to clarify which areas of development that alcohol may effect and how. Thirteen women who graduated from a four year college or university within the past 5 years were interviewed regarding their alcohol use and experiences amid specific developmental processes. This study investigated the experiences, motivations, and perceptions of groupies in folk rock music culture. Through qualitatively collected data, it explored the phenomenological impacts of women following male folk rock musicians. It brought to light women's perspectives on their roles as groupies, and what their family backgrounds and earlier experiences in relationships looked like. It also explored how their experiences with folk rock music affected or influenced their emotional states. Females who self-identified as women in folk rock music culture ranging in ages from 18-35 were recruited from the Northampton and Boston area in Massachusetts. Eight women in folk rock …

Youth within the U.S. juvenile justice system are among the most traumatized. There is a need for trauma sensitive treatment in order to address the mental health needs of traumatized, delinquent youth and prevent re-traumatization within the juvenile justice system. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a promising treatment for juvenile delinquents with trauma histories. This thesis posits that DBT for delinquent youth supports rehabilitation through the mechanism of mindfulness by targeting posttraumatic stress reactions, which in turn may reduce anti-social behaviors. The focus of this theoretical study is to examine, classify, and compare different eating disorder prevention/intervention programs used thus far for college-age females using two different theoretical frameworks: the Cognitive Behavioral model and the Sociocultural model. The prevalence and effects of eating disorder behaviors will be addressed. Strengths and weaknesses of each of the already developed programs will be addressed using these two theoretical models. This qualitative study explores the changing experience of family life, acculturation, and preservation of traditional collectivist culture among Somali refugee and immigrant parents raising children in the United States. Resettlement in the U.S. forced many Somali refugees to transition to a new individualistic culture of family values markedly different from their own. Nine Somali refugee and immigrant mothers and fathers residing in Connecticut and western Massachusetts participated in the research. This exploratory study reveals the narratives of long-term, committed same-sex couples living in the Bay area of California, who decided not to marry in 2008 when it was temporarily legal. Thirteen participants were interviewed and their responses were transcribed and analyzed. They were asked to explain personal, social, and political influences on their perspectives on marriage. They were also asked to define commitment and the commitment markers used in their relationships. Lastly, they were questioned about their relationship with the current marriage equality movement. Findings revealed that participants refrained from marrying due to negative associations they have developed toward the …

This study examined correlations and the impact between culture, language barriers, medical adherence, post transplant recovery and quality of life among monolingual Spanish or bilingual English and Spanish female and male pediatric Latino/Hispanic transplant recipients between the ages of 13 to 21 who have undergone either an autologous or allogeneic blood stem cell (bone marrow) transplant and their parent(s)/caretakers. By definition, bone marrow transplant is the treatment of hematopoietic stem cell from bone marrow, cord blood or peripheral blood. Despite the growing body of knowledge regarding psychopathy among adolescent sex offenders, additional research is still necessary. In this study I examine four measures of juvenile psychopathy (Childhood Psychopathy Scale, Antisocial Process Screening Device, Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory, and Inventory of Callous and Unemotional Traits) in a sample of 191 incarcerated adolescent sex offenders located in juvenile detention facilities in a Midwestern state. I examine how the diverse scales relate to characteristics of sexual aggression and non-sexual criminality, and which scale specifically has the best predictive validity for sexual as well as non-sexual crime. This theoretical study explores therapeutic impasse through the dual lens of relational theory and infant research. Particular attention is paid to the role that enactment, rupture and repair, and non-verbal communication play in impasse dynamics. Defined broadly--as any time a therapist and patient feel stuck--impasse is conceptualized as an expectable, even inevitable, component of the treatment relationship. This paper further posits that small moments of impasse hold potential for growth. Finally, the implications for navigating impasse are considered through a clinical vignette.

Little research has been done on the perceptions and experiences of juvenile sex offenders in regards to their treatment, in this case, specifically group treatment. This study looks at a sample of 191 incarcerated juvenile sex offenders in a Midwestern state and measures not only the juvenile sex offender's thoughts, feelings and perceptions of their group treatment but also looks at what, if any iatrogenic affects may have resulted. This qualitative study examines the experiences of veterans and active duty service members who engaged in the current wars termed Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan. The investigation is based on the perspectives of 11 mental health clinicians who work primarily with OEF and OIF veterans in the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) medical facilities and Vet Centers. The purpose of this study was to explore the development of gender identity in children with autism. This research asked "Do people on the autism spectrum acquire gender identity differently than those who are neurotypically developing?" It was hypothesized that those on the autism spectrum did acquire gender identity differently, and that this process may be more influenced by individual cognition than social learning. This study was undertaken to determine therapists' perspectives on the effectiveness of the TF-CBT model to treat complex trauma in children. This qualitative study aims to enhance and expand knowledge in the field about complex trauma and the usefulness of the TF-CBT clinical approach. This qualitative study explores how young children (age 5-11) experience and develop empathy about parents who are suffering from physical and psychological injuries. This study was based on a Sesame Workshop film which depicts five families with a parent returning from war with either a visible (arm or leg amputation) or an invisible (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury) wound. Children of military families (n= 28 children) and children of civilian families (n= 42 children) comprised the study sample. 136 providers of services to infants, toddlers and their families were surveyed in order to gain information concerning assessment and intervention in social/emotional development and parent/child relationships. Programmatic philosophies were examined, as well as participants' direct experience with assessment, intervention, access to mental health resources, and experiences of supervision. Findings revealed an understanding of the importance of social/emotional development in assessing development and revealed that educational strategies were used more often than those that addressed the thoughts and feelings of practitioners and families. A majority of providers received individual supervision to review cases, but fewer received reflective supervision that addressed …

In his 1978 memoirs, President Nixon claimed, “By using diplomatic signals and behind-the-scenes pressures we had been able to save West Pakistan from the imminent threat of Indian aggression and domination. We had also once again avoided a major confrontation with the Soviet Union.”[1] Kissinger’s far more detailed chapter on “the tilt,” in the first volume of his memoirs, White House Years, complements and largely corroborates Nixon’s.
