Achieving Middle-Income Status By 2030: Is This The Most Appropriate Objective For Zambia?, Venkatesh Seshamani

Zambia Social Science Journal

On the backdrop of three important quotes and based on a wealth of underlying research, this article presents a systematic review of growth and development measurement in general and specifically in relation to Zambia’s prospects of achieving middle income status by 2030. It highlights what it takes to achieve middle income status and what the limitations of such ambitions are. In commenting about Zambia’s prospects, the article presents detailed cross-country comparisons with selected African economies. Attention is paid to aspects of economic (income) growth, human development and true human progress, using a range of international indicators in the analysis. Ultimately …

Boise State University librarians Erin Passehl and Amy Vecchione were invited by the 2010 Idaho Library Association Conference Planning Committee to present on the topic of "creating digital archives." Idaho is a state that currently lacks a centralized digital repository or consortium and, as a result, there are libraries and historical societies around the state without the training or skills to create digital collections. Yet these organizations have rich collections pertinent to the history of Idaho, ranging from original manuscripts to historic photos.

Attendees will have an opportunity to learn and discuss with two librarians from California State University System about the challenges and issues experienced in implementing bilingual services in reference and instructional sessions to bilingual speaking students on their campuses. In addition, attendees will be able to learn about a strong partnership developed between both librarians as well as empowering a curriculum relationship with faculty in Foreign and Romance Languages Departments. Presenters will also address how to create an ambiance of support to first generation students who often experience a lack of confidence necessary to be academically successful.

Achieving academic success requires diligence among all concerned – doctoral students, academic advisors, and institutions. This paper presents interviews of five outstanding scholars who have dedicated their lives to research productivity, academic advising, and scholarly service. The work/life balance and output they achieved is the result of purposeful planning, tenacity, and passion for the field and students. The paper first introduces the topic of academic success, then initial thoughts from the authors are presented. Brief biographies of the scholars are shared to demonstrate academic contributions. An Empirical Investigation Of Group Acceptance Using The Big Five Personality Domains, Arpita Joardar, Linda M. Matthews

In this paper, we examine task-based and relationship-based group acceptances of a newcomer from the perspective of personality theory. We used policy-capturing with an MBA student sample for our study. As predicted, our findings indicated that task-based group acceptance was affected by a newcomer’s perceived conscientiousness, openness, neuroticism, and extraversion, while relationship-based group acceptance was influenced by his/her perceived openness, neuroticism, and agreeableness. However, we failed to find support for the effect of perceived extraversion on relationship-based group acceptance. The implications for groups and suggestions for future research directions are discussed.

Executive Search Relationships – Contacts Between Executives And Search Firm Professionals: Scale Development And Validation, Thomas A. Clerkin, Jeong-Yeon Lee

This exploratory study investigates the nature of contacts between executives and search firm professionals, which together encompass the executive search relationship. An initial scale was developed, reviewed by experts and tested. Factor analysis led to a revised scale for further testing, which based on multiple samples identified three types of executive search contacts: (1) search firminitiated contacts; (2) executive-initiated contacts; and (3) contacts for mutual benefit. Correlational studies among these types as well as related concepts in networking behavior are presented, showing executive search relationships to be a unique and distinct measure. This study discusses the relationship between social and formal working conditions and employees’ propensity to attribute charisma to their leaders in normative and professional organizations. Several studies have argued that crises, organic structures, and social conditions, such as group and organizational belonging, are positively correlated with charisma, while formal conditions such as rules and routines are negatively correlated with charisma. However, this study hypothesized that employees attribute charisma to their leader if they are provided with conditions that help them succeed in performing their work, and if such conditions can be related directly to their leader, such as rules and …

Danisi offers an analysis of Sibley’s time as assistant factor at Fort Bellefontaine under factor Rodolphe Tillier, a man of strong political connections and elastic ethics. Tillier fired Sibley, Danisi argues, because he discovered and revealed Tillier’s shady business dealings while a government official; ultimately, Sibley was exonerated and even promoted to factor of the newly formed Fort Osage.

Electronic course reserves serve a vital function in university instruction, enabling students to easily access important published literature in their discipline. While electronic systems have greatly improved the functionality of course reserves and have led to their ubiquitous use on campus, publishers have become more litigious and threaten to erode educational exceptions to copyright law under fair use. This paper reviews recent relevant case law with a view to providing recommendations for best practices for electronic reserves in university libraries that preserve traditional legal exceptions to copyright protections in education. This report is the fifth in a series of reports examining agriculture’s economic contribution to the Arkansas economy. Utilizing data from the United States Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), USDA Economics Research Service (ERS), USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), and Minnesota IMPLAN Group, Inc. (MIG), the economic contribution of agriculture on the Arkansas economy was estimated for the most recent year available, 2008. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by State information for Arkansas was compared with those of other states in the southeast U.S. to give a measure of the relative importance of agriculture in Arkansas.2 The total economic contribution …

Generalized Variances Ratio Test For Comparing K Covariance Matrices From Dependent Normal Populations, Marcelo Angelo Cirillo, Daniel Furtado Ferreira, Thelma Sáfadi, Eric Batista Ferreira

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

New tests based on the ratio of generalized variances are presented to compare covariance matrices from dependent normal populations. Monte Carlo simulation concluded that the tests considered controlled the Type I error, providing empirical probabilities that were consistent with the nominal level stipulated.

A Ga-Based Sales Forecasting Model Incorporating Promotion Factors, Li-Chih Wang, Chin-Lien Wang

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Because promotions are critical factors highly related to product sales of consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies, predictors concerning sales forecast of CPG products must take promotions into consideration. Decomposition regression incorporating contextual factors offers a method for exploiting both reliability of statistical forecasting and flexibility of judgmental forecasting employing domain knowledge. However, it suffers from collinearity causing poor performance in variable identification and parameter estimation with traditional ordinary least square (OLS). Empirical research evidence shows that - in the case of collinearity - in variable identification, parameter estimation, and out of sample forecasting, genetic algorithms (GA) as an estimator outperform …
