This analysis examines whether state insurance laws require health insurers, as a condition of doing business, to pay the costs associated with the administration of immunizations during declared public health emergencies. As is the case with the current H1N1 emergency, a public health emergency triggers nationwide distribution of free vaccine. But even when vaccine is distributed free of charge, its administration poses costs to private physicians and charges can be significant. As a result, the Institute of Medicine has identified vaccine administration as a potential financial barrier to care. BROADLY speaking,Pakistan’s economic policies in the 1960s and since 1977 have been fairly consistent, although their execution has left much to be desired.

So, considering that the thrust of economic policy has been fairly constant (except for nationalisation in the 1970s) the variations in economic output need to be explained.

Tunneling Through Intercorporate Loans: The China Experience, Guohua Jiang, Charles M. C. Lee, Heng Yue

Research Collection School of Accountancy

This study investigates a particularly brazen form of corporate abuse, in which controlling shareholders use intercorporate loans to siphon billions of RMB from hundreds of Chinese listed companies during the 1996 to 2006 period. We document the nature and extent of these transactions, evaluate their economic consequences, examine factors that affect their cross-sectional severity, and report on the mitigating roles of auditors, institutional investors, and regulators. Collectively, our findings shed light on the severity of the minority shareholder expropriation problem in China, as well as the relative efficacy of various legal and extra-legal governance mechanisms in that country.

Alcohol Use And Gender Effects On Hiv Risk Behaviors In Cocaine-Using Methadone Patients, Carla J. Rash, Nancy M. Petry

Injection drug users engage in behaviors that increase the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases. Although methadone maintenance (MM) is highly effective in decreasing heroin use and the spread of HIV, polydrug use, especially the combined use of cocaine and alcohol, is common in MM patients. Alcohol use is independently associated with HIV risk behaviors, and the effects of alcohol use on risk behaviors may vary by gender. This study evaluated the effects of recent heavy alcohol use and gender with respect to HIV risk behaviors in 118 cocaine-abusing methadone patients. Both lifetime and past month …

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are now paid $11 billion a year and $150 billion over 10 years more than costs in fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare. In the past two years there have been discussions about reducing MA payments to the level of FFS costs and using the savings to offset the costs of new Federal initiatives such as health care reform. These discussions have included a number of options on the specific new approach to pay plans including: average FFS costs in each county; a blend of local county FFS costs and national FFS average costs; and a regional system based …

The purpose of this study was to see if there is a co relational relationship between an individual’s smoking habits and the smoking habits of his/her family. There were hopes of finding a relationship between people’s habits and whether their smoking relative is biologically related or not. The hypothesis seeks to find a relationship between an individual’s smoking habits and the smoking habits of their family. There were seventy-eight undergraduate students from Lindenwood University surveyed and only eight were smokers. Thirty-seven point five percent, or three out of eight, smokers in the study had a mom that smoked, and the …

A random variable X is said to have the skew-Laplace probability distribution if its pdf is given by f(x) = 2g(x)G(λx), where g (.) and G (.), respectively, denote the pdf and the cdf of the Laplace distribution. When the skew Laplace distribution is truncated on the left at 0 it is called it the truncated skew Laplace (TSL) distribution. This article provides a comparison of TSL distribution with twoparameter gamma model and the hypoexponential model, and an application of the subject model in maintenance system is studied.
