The people of the Cathlapotle town played a significant role in the fur trade era history of the Lower Columbia River, including Lewis and Clark’s visit on March 29th, 1806. Archaeologists and others have sought the town’s location for years. Long-term research has established that archaeological site 45CL1 on the US Fish and Wildlife Refuge near Ridgefield, Washington is Cathlapotle. This determination is based on the close match between site details with various ethnohistoric accounts of Cathlapotle. The site was occupied by ca. AD 1450 and probably moved there from another nearby location. It was abandoned sometime in the 1830s …

The article reports on the opening of the Library Technology Center at North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega to crowds of students, faculty, staff and community members on August 19, 2008. A brief overview is given on the history, graduate programs, and student population of the university. The college library needed more and better seating and public computing, library instruction spaces and collection space. These factors, combined with limited Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility and inadequate electrical, lighting and life-safety systems, created a compelling case for a library building project.

The article presents information on academic libraries that can create a user-centered learning space for library users with limited resources. It notes that students desire user-centered facilities that encourage learner participation and social engagement. It reveals the findings of an online open-ended survey which investigated the needs of library users. Information is given on some of the ways accomplished at minimum cost including, reuse furniture, reuse more furniture, rearranging furniture, and adding some color to the facility.

Gwinnett County Library System Begins Construction Of First 'Green' Facility

The article reports on the ground breaking ceremony held by Gwinnett County and Gwinnett County Public Library officials in Lawrenceville, Georgia on October 21, 2008 to start the construction of the Hamilton Mill branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library System. The library building will be designed by Precision Planning Inc. to meet the Silver LEED energy efficiency and sustainability standards. Garrard Construction Group is constructing the facility, which will be open in the winter of 2010.

Conyers-Rockdale Library Celebrates Start Of Construction

Augusta-Richmond County Breaks Ground On New Hq

Many repositories at American colleges and universities hold the official records of their institutions as well as the personal papers of individuals. Archivists appraise these different materials—institutional records and personal papers—using separate theoretical perspectives. They tend to bring a records-management view of evidential value to the appraisal of institutional records and a curator’s eye for informational and intrinsic values to personal manuscripts. There is one collecting category common to university repositories, however, that requires a hybrid approach. Falling between the two broad categories of university records and personal manuscripts are the papers of university faculty members. Studies of the holdings …

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Documentation of an endangered language may be a short project that is carried out with urgency and with primarily academic benefits because the speakers are not passing on the language to others. This paper presents historical perspective on a quite different kind of situation. The documentation of the Seri language has taken place over a considerable period of time and with goals that were primarily community-focused. It documents some of the challenges that have been present during those years and also the benefits of that documentation that are just now beginning to be felt by the speakers of that language.

How do attitudes and social affiliations co-evolve? A long stream of research has focused on the relationship between attitudes and social affiliations. However, in most of this research the causal relationship between views and affiliations is difficult to discern definitively: Do people influence each other’s views so that they converge over time or do they primarily affiliate (by choice or happenstance) with those of similar views? Here we use longitudinal attitudinal and whole network data collected at critical times (notably, at the inception of the system) to identify robustly the determinants of attitudes and affiliations. Many scholars address the indirect effects presidents have on midterm election results by examining the “midterm loss” phenomenon, presidential coattails, negative voting, and the “referendum” thesis. However, very little research investigates the direct effect that presidential campaigning has on congressional candidates prospects for victory. This study adds to this growing literature by exploring presidential campaigning in the 2002 and 2006 U.S. Senate midterm elections. Our investigation makes two important contributions to previous research. First, we explicitly model the strategic decisions presidents make in visiting states in order to get a better estimate of presidential impact that accounts for selection bias. …

The Hungarians in Romania and Slovakia are not just ethnic minorities but also linguistic minorities whose language has almost no linguistic similarity to their host nations’ language. One aspect of life in which linguistic minority issues arise most frequently is that of education. Should minority linguistic groups be forced to learn the national language in order to attend school or participate in official functions or should the government provide or allow for education in their native language?
