The Three C’S Of Servant-Leadership, Mohan Nair Jan 2009

The Three C’S Of Servant-Leadership, Mohan Nair

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Recently, my contemplation has resulted in only one phrase: Choose yourself correctly. Leadership is sometimes viewed as an endless journey, a state of mind, or a method. Servant-leadership is about mission, practice and persuasion. To me, it is all these frameworks and more. The "more" is that it is a journey of endless choices - not merely of decisions, but of choices about who you want to become. The meantime between deciding who you choose to be is between every breath taken in some ways. Because only between breaths do we actually think and feel our choices. You see, the …

Storm Warnings: The Obvious And Latent Disorder Approaching From Changes In The Environment, Addiction, And Family Structure, Charles W. Kinman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does. And when the south wind blows you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is." Luke 12:54-55 As the crowd looks to the expanding global horizon, they see complex social change approaching like brewing storms. These storms threaten to introduce powerful winds of disconnection, disorder, and chaos that will generate great challenges for leaders in the next decade. The first storm is the environment's irreparable changes in nature and population. The second storm is society's …

Linking Highway Improvements To Changes In Land Use With Quasi-Experimental Research Design: A Better Forecasting Tool For Transportation Decision-Making, R. G. Funderburg, Hilary Nixon, M. G. Boarnet Jan 2009

Linking Highway Improvements To Changes In Land Use With Quasi-Experimental Research Design: A Better Forecasting Tool For Transportation Decision-Making, R. G. Funderburg, Hilary Nixon, M. G. Boarnet

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

An important issue for future improvement and extensions of highways will be the ability of projects to sustain challenges to Environmental Impact Statements based upon forecasts of regional growth. A legal precedent for such challenges was established in 1997 when a U.S. District Court judge ruled that the EIS for a proposed Illinois toll road was deficient because the growth projections were the same in the build and no-build scenarios. This paper incorporates popular regional growth forecasting models into a quasi-experimental research design that directly relates new highway investments in three California counties to changes in population and employment location, …

Thoughts On Lb 36: Problems With The Proposed Bill To Institute Lethal Injection In Nebraska, Eric Berger Jan 2009

Thoughts On Lb 36: Problems With The Proposed Bill To Institute Lethal Injection In Nebraska, Eric Berger

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In February 2008, the Nebraska Supreme Court held in State v. Mata that Nebraska’s electrocution procedure violated the Nebraska constitution’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. Mata left Nebraska in the curious position of having the death penalty on the books without a constitutional method of executing death sentences. In December 2008, Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning submitted a report to the Governor recommending that Nebraska adopt lethal injection as a new means to carry out a sentence of death. General Bruning’s report included LB 36, a proposed statute that would institute lethal injection in Nebraska.

On January 29, 2009, …

Victim And Witness Intimidation, Elsa Y. Chen Jan 2009

Victim And Witness Intimidation, Elsa Y. Chen

Political Science

Victim or witness intimidation is the practice of threatening, harming, or otherwise instilling fear in a victim of, or witness to, a crime, in an effort to prevent him or her from reporting a crime or testifying in court. It may also be used to convince a victim or witness to recant testimony that has already been made. The intimidation may involve physical violence, explicit threats of physical violence, implicit threats, and/or property damage. Threats may be made by the defendant or by his or her friends, family, fellow gang members, or other associates. Most victim and witness intimidation takes …

Cyberbullying, Phyllis I. Schoenholz, Deborah J. Weitzenkamp, Jennifer S. Nixon Jan 2009

Cyberbullying, Phyllis I. Schoenholz, Deborah J. Weitzenkamp, Jennifer S. Nixon

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Faculty and Staff Publications

Technology now allows people — often children — to bully online. Social messaging sites can open up the user to a variety of bullying techniques outside of the playground. How parents and other adults can help reduce bullying over the Internet is examined in this NebGuide. ...

What can a parent do about cyberbullying? First, it’s important that parents and youth not reply or respond in any way to cyberbullies. Research indicates that being responsive may, in fact, escalate the activity. Instead, parents will need to think like a detective or lawyer. Document the activity with dates and times and …

Children’S Insensitivity To Information From The Target Of Agreement: The Case Of Xhosa, Sandile Gxilishe, Mantoa Rose Smouse, Thabisa Xhalisa, Jill De Villiers Jan 2009

Children’S Insensitivity To Information From The Target Of Agreement: The Case Of Xhosa, Sandile Gxilishe, Mantoa Rose Smouse, Thabisa Xhalisa, Jill De Villiers

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

The paper presents an account of number agreement phenomena arguing that the target of agreement may be bleached of number information. This would explain why English-speaking children have difficulty relying on the target alone as a clue to number, despite producing it correctly. Xhosa has a very rich subject-verb agreement system and pro-drop, and there is theoretical dispute over its properties. An experiment with Xhosa-speaking children revealed that they, too, are unable to use the morpheme on the verb as a cue to subject number. It is argued that this may be further evidence that the morpheme is agreement rather …

Head Direction Cell Activity In Mice: Robust Directional Signal Depends On Intact Otolith Organs, Ryan M. Yoder, J.S. Taube Jan 2009

Head Direction Cell Activity In Mice: Robust Directional Signal Depends On Intact Otolith Organs, Ryan M. Yoder, J.S. Taube

Psychology

The head direction (HD) cell signal is a representation of an animal's perceived directional heading with respect to its environment. This signal appears to originate in the vestibular system, which includes the semicircular canals and otolith organs. Preliminary studies indicate the semicircular canals provide a necessary component of the HD signal, but involvement of otolithic information in the HD signal has not been tested. The present study was designed to determine the otolithic contribution to the HD signal, as well as to compare HD cell activity of mice with that of rats. HD cell activity in the anterodorsal thalamus was …

The Relationship Between Parental Sense Of Competence And Parental Descriptions Of Behavior And Treatment, Rebecca Denning Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Parental Sense Of Competence And Parental Descriptions Of Behavior And Treatment, Rebecca Denning

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Although the literature has paid significant attention to treatments addressing externalizing behavior disorders, it has given less attention to the role of parental factors on treatment outcomes. This study used a qualitative methodology consisting of thirty semi-structured interviews with parents whose children had been in treatment for externalizing behavior problems for at least a month to examine how variations in parental sense of competence and self-efficacy are related to the ways in which parents describe their child’s behaviors, their response to behaviors, their investment in treatment, and their attribution of treatment outcomes. Thematic differences between participants with high parental sense …

Eye-Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing: Implementation And Utilization Of Emdr As A Treatment For Trauma, Kelly Medeiros Jan 2009

Eye-Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing: Implementation And Utilization Of Emdr As A Treatment For Trauma, Kelly Medeiros

Undergraduate Review

Trauma is a pervasive global issue that affects both children and adults. It is officially defined in the most recent Diagnostic Manual as an event that threatens death or serious injury, and that elicits a response of fear, helplessness, or horror (American Psychiatric Association, 2002). Other respected definitions include a “sudden, unexpected, overwhelmingly intense emotional blow....[that] quickly becomes incorporated into the mind” (Terr, 1992, p. 8), and something that makes “both internal and external resources...inadequate to cope with external threat” (Van der Kolk, 1989, p. 393). Literature suggests that people who have experienced trauma may present with symptoms including depression, …

Exploring The Nature Of Anti-Federalist Thought: Republicanism And Liberalism In The Political Thought Of Cato, Christopher Hallenbrook Jan 2009

Exploring The Nature Of Anti-Federalist Thought: Republicanism And Liberalism In The Political Thought Of Cato, Christopher Hallenbrook

Undergraduate Review

Scholarship of the American founding remains divided as to the nature of Anti-Federalist political philosophy. One school of thought contends that the Anti-Federalists were the heirs of the republican tradition, while the other maintains that the Anti-Federalists operated from a liberal worldview. Thus in what manner and to what extent Anti-Federalists draw upon the republican and/or liberal political traditions remains unclear. In answering this question I examine the writings of the Anti-Federalist Cato, analyzing what conceptualizations characterize Anti-Federalist thought and from what traditions of political philosophy these ideas arose. I also analyze texts of the major traditions that my have …

A Bridge Between The Mind And Body: The Effects Of Massage On Body Image State, Bonnie Fletcher Jan 2009

A Bridge Between The Mind And Body: The Effects Of Massage On Body Image State, Bonnie Fletcher

Undergraduate Review

While research suggests positive effects of massage on psychological health, little is known about the effects of massage on body image. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of massage on body image and to examine relationships between body image and attitudes toward massage. Twenty-one female college students aged 18 to 67 (M=25.2, SD=13.20) were randomly assigned to either a massage or control condition. Participants completed questionnaires measuring body image state and trait, attitudes toward massage, and demographics. It was hypothesized that the experimental group would show greater body image change than the control group. Results showed …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2008-2009, Bruce B. Johnson, Ryan Lukassen Jan 2009

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2008-2009, Bruce B. Johnson, Ryan Lukassen

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Following strong value advances over the past several years, Nebraska farmland values throttled down and stabilized across most of the state during the 12-month period ending February 1, 2009. According the 2009 UNL Nebraska Farm Real Estate Survey, the average all-land value rose just over 1% for the year. Some modest decreases in value were reported for some classes of land, but relative to recent trends for residential and commercial property across the U.S., stable values for agricultural land speaks to its relative strength in the current recession.

Regional differences in value shifts were rather significant over the time period. …

Primary And Preventive Healthcare: A Critical Path To Healthcare Reform For Florida: The Role Of Florida's Fqhcs, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin, Brad Finnegan, Ramona Whittington

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Florida's health care system faces numerous challenges: a high proportion of residents without health insurance, a declining supply of primary care physicians at the same time that the state faces a growing need for high quality and cost efficient care for uninsured persons, and a growing emphasis on medical homes, especially for culturally diverse patients with complex chronic conditions. Nearly 3.8 million Florida residents lack health insurance, while more than 8 million lack access to a regular source of primary health care.

Assuring access to timely and high quality primary health care is a key dimension of any health reform …
