Estado Del Arte, Y Perspectiva Actual Del Concepto De Bienestar Psicológico En Psicología Del Deporte, Alicia E. Romero-Carrasco, Alexandre Garcia-Mas, Robert J. Brustad

School of Sport & Exercise Science Faculty Publications

Well-being psychology theory (Ryff, 1989) is one of the essential links of positive psychology, which has been mainly framed between two perspectives that explain a model of world and a model of person (Díaz, 2006). Ryff (1989) states her model baptized as “Integrated Model of Personal Development”. Considering that sport, and life cycle sport are activities that demand to be strong, to have superior volitive skills, autonomy, be challenging, set up objectives, meet aims, grow as person, adapt to different environments and changes, and for that purpose, establish positive relationship with the others, be healthy and maintain self control, is …

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton Jan 2009

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton

Western Libraries Publications

This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.

Information Literacy And Research-Intensive Graduate Students: Enhancing The Role Of Research Librarians, Marni R. Harrington Jan 2009

Information Literacy And Research-Intensive Graduate Students: Enhancing The Role Of Research Librarians, Marni R. Harrington

Western Libraries Publications

This article investigates how psychology graduate students find information for coursework and research, who teaches them how to find it, and whether differences emerge over the course of their graduate careers. Findings indicate that these graduate students are comfortable using campus libraries, prefer electronic resources, ask supervisors when they need assistance locating information, and have some interest in furthering their information literacy knowledge. Finally, the master’s students use different information management skills than do the PhD students, as evidenced by the use of bibliographic management software. Suggestions for furthering the role of research librarians focus on being more proactive, rather …

Measuring Quality In Chat Reference Consortia: A Comparative Analysis Of Responses To Users’ Queries, Deborah L. Meert, Lisa M. Given Jan 2009

Measuring Quality In Chat Reference Consortia: A Comparative Analysis Of Responses To Users’ Queries, Deborah L. Meert, Lisa M. Given

Western Libraries Publications

Academic libraries have experienced growing demand for 24/7 access
to resources and services. Despite the challenges and costs of chat
reference service and consortia, many libraries are finding the demand
for these services worth the cost. One key challenge is providing and
measuring quality of service, particularly in a consortia setting. This study
explores the quality of service provided in one academic library participating
in a 24/7 chat reference consortium, by assessing transcripts of
chat sessions using in-house reference quality standards. Findings point
to both similarities and differences between chat interactions of local
librarians versus consortia staff.

A Dissociation Between Perception And Action In The Material‐Weight Illusion, Gavin Buckingham, Jonathan S. Cant, Kai-Ling C. Kao, Melvyn A. Goodale Jan 2009

A Dissociation Between Perception And Action In The Material‐Weight Illusion, Gavin Buckingham, Jonathan S. Cant, Kai-Ling C. Kao, Melvyn A. Goodale

Psychology Presentations

We examined what forces are applied to objects that elicit this illusion when they are lifted. We predicted that:

(1) Forces on early trials will scale to each participant’s expectations of how much a particular block will weigh ‐ excessive force will be applied to the metal block and insufficient force applied to the polystyrene block.

(2) Forces on later trials will scale to the real weight of each block ‐ identical levels of force applied to all the blocks.

(3) MWI will persist throughout ‐ polystyrene block will feel the heaviest, metal block will feel the lightest.

Grasping And Lifting Different Materials, Gavin Buckingham, Jonathan S. Cant, Melvyn A. Goodale Jan 2009

Grasping And Lifting Different Materials, Gavin Buckingham, Jonathan S. Cant, Melvyn A. Goodale

Psychology Presentations

The material from which an object is made can determine how heavy it feels (Seashore, 1899). Interestingly, a metal block that has been adjusted to have the same size and mass as a polystyrene block will feel lighter than the polystyrene block. We recently showed that participants experiencing this material-weight illusion’ (MWI) do not apply forces that match their perceptual experience of heaviness ‐ just like in the size‐weight illusion ( Flanagan & Beltzner, 2000).

Our previous study showed that forces on early trials were scaled to each participant’s expectations of how much a particular block should weigh ‐ excessive …

Ruminative Thought Style And Depressed Mood., Jay K Brinker, David J A Dozois Jan 2009

Ruminative Thought Style And Depressed Mood., Jay K Brinker, David J A Dozois

Psychology Publications

Recent research has suggested that the measure most commonly used to assess rumination, the Response Style Questionnaire (RSQ; L. D. Butler & S. Nolen-Hoeksema, 1994), may be heavily biased by depressive symptoms, thereby restricting the scope of research exploring this construct. This article offers a broader conceptualization of rumination, which includes positive, negative, and neutral thoughts as well as past and future-oriented thoughts. The first two studies describe the development and evaluation of the Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (RTS), a psychometrically sound measure of the general tendency to ruminate. Further, the scale is comprised of a single factor and shows …

An Overall Assessment Of The Ontario Municipalities Benchmarking Initiative (Ombi), Feven Gebremicael Jan 2009

An Overall Assessment Of The Ontario Municipalities Benchmarking Initiative (Ombi), Feven Gebremicael

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the success of the Ontario Municipal Benchmarking Initiative (OMBI) based on the performance measurement data reported in its annual publications of 2006, 2007, and 2008. The findings reveal that, although the program is important for municipalities in principle, the OMBI’s objectives are barely met and issues related to accountability and standard measures, which are at the heart of the initiative, have failed to ensure service excellence and the sharing of good practices.

Keyword Enhanced Web Structure Mining For Business Intelligence, L. Vaughan, J. You Jan 2009

Keyword Enhanced Web Structure Mining For Business Intelligence, L. Vaughan, J. You

FIMS Publications

The study proposed the method of keyword enhanced Web structure mining which combines the ideas of Web content mining with Web structure mining. The method was used to mine data on business competition among a group of DSLAM companies. Specifically, the keyword DSLAM was incorporated into queries that searched for co-links between pairs of company Websites. The resulting co-link matrix was analyzed using multidimensional scaling (MDS) to map business competition positions. The study shows that the proposed method improves upon the previous method of Web structure mining alone by producing a more accurate map of business competition in the DSLAM …

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer Jan 2009

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer

FIMS Publications

Situated in a review of rural, cultural, and youth geographies, this article reports on a qualitative study of the role of reading and libraries in the lives of older rural teenagers. The primary method of data collection was the use of in‐depth, flexibly structured interviews with twenty‐seven youth between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years, supplemented with data from unobtrusive observation and environmental scanning in a specific geographic locale. Four themes are discussed: the habitual, quotidian reading of teenagers; the shifting visibility of the public library; the Internet and the World Wide Web as a default reading site; and …

Common Insights, Differing Methodologies: Towards A Fusion Of Indigenous Methodologies, Participatory Action Research, And White Studies In An Urban Aboriginal Research Agenda, Mike Evans, Rachelle Hole, Lawrence D. Berg, Peter Hutchinson, Dixon Sookraj

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

In this paper we discuss three broad research approaches: Indigenous Methodologies, Participatory Action Research, and White Studies. We suggest that a fusion of these three approaches can be useful, especially in terms of collaborative work with Indigenous communities. More specifically, we argue that using Indigenous Methodologies and Participatory Action Research, but refocusing the object of inquiry directly and specifically on the institutions and structures that Indigenous peoples face, can be a particularly effective way of transforming Indigenous peoples from the objects of inquiry to its authors. A case study focused on the development of appropriate research methods for a collaborative …
