Voter Perception: Skin Tone Bias And The Electability Of Black American Candidates, Lisa Herndon

Psychology Honors Projects

Skin tone bias is the inclination to perceive or behave towards members of a racial group based on the lightness or darkness of their skin. Previous research has demonstrated that the lightness or darkness of one's skin tone plays an important role in person perception. However, skin tone bias has yet to be fully explored in a political context. This study investigates the relationship between skin tone and the perception of Black political candidates. Eighty eight participants took a skin tone IAT and were asked to evaluate a newspaper article featuring a Black candidate, differing only in skin tone. The …

Beyond Corporatism And Liberalism: State And Civil Society In Cooperation In Nicaragua, Hannah Pallmeyer Jan 2009

Beyond Corporatism And Liberalism: State And Civil Society In Cooperation In Nicaragua, Hannah Pallmeyer

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

The Nicaraguan state has historically attempted to control Nicaraguan civil society using corporatist and liberal-democratic frameworks. This has created a difficult organizing environment for civil society organizations to struggle for social change. In this thesis, I argue that civil society organizations, operating in 2008 in a corporatist or liberal framework, were less effective in achieving national social change than organizations that worked cooperatively with the state, yet maintained some autonomy. This hypothesis is developed using the case study of three water rights organizations, and is further tested using the case of corporatist-structured Citizen Power Councils, created in 2007.

It began with the Fall Convocation, and the announcement that Senator Chuck Hagel, a UNO alum, would be locating his Congressional Archives in the Criss Library. This was followed by the dedication of the newly renovated home for the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, …

Repositioning The Culture Of Power: Advocating For Systemic Change In Public Affairs Education, Richard Greggory Johnson, Cynthia Reyes, Sherwood Smith Jan 2009

Repositioning The Culture Of Power: Advocating For Systemic Change In Public Affairs Education, Richard Greggory Johnson, Cynthia Reyes, Sherwood Smith

Public and Nonprofit Administration

The present study sets out to characterize and analyze difficulties that typically face faculty of color who teach at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Using personal narratives of junior faculty at a PWI, we explore the themes of shifting identity and marginality for faculty of color as these intersect with the presentation of public selves in university settings. This exploration is consistent with development of the themes of intersectionality and multiplicity in the work of Rivera and Ward in their Spring, 2008 Social Equity and Diversity symposium (2008).

We as authors were initially unsure whether the effort to analyze concerns surrounding …

Winning, Running, And Renewing The Outsourcing Contracts, Z Perunovic, M Christoffersen, Robert Mefford

Finance

The paper explores how vendors deploy competences and capabilities across the outsourcing process in order to win, run, and renew outsourcing contracts. The results of a multiple-case study of three contract electronics manufacturers (CEMs) show that different combinations of capabilities are required for a vendor to win, run, and renew outsourcing contracts. Permanent capabilities are constantly present across the process, while temporary capabilities, depending on customer requirements, can be added or removed from the portfolio of capabilities.

Victory Over Terrorism: Essential Services As Counterinsurgency Strategy, Jeffrey Treistman Jan 2009

Victory Over Terrorism: Essential Services As Counterinsurgency Strategy, Jeffrey Treistman

National Security Faculty Publications

The preponderance of postsurge analysis is devoted to military operations and their subsequent efficacy in reducing levels of violence by concentrating on troop deployments, tactics, and intelligence. Such studies are valuable, but only to a certain extent. Any holistic appraisal must also consider noncombat counterinsurgency strategies that addressed social issues—in particular, essential services. Reminiscent of Lebanon’s Hizballah, militias in Baghdad sought ascendency over services as a means to solidify control and influence. Therefore, the most pragmatic remedy for long-term stability in Iraq was not necessarily countering militants with force, but securing the populace’s allegiance to their government through the provision …

Homeland Security And The Police Mission, Stephen A. Morreale, David E. Lambert Jan 2009

Homeland Security And The Police Mission, Stephen A. Morreale, David E. Lambert

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The terrorist attacks on America are seen as a pivotal period for the nation and for policing. They have thrust policing into a new mission that will have a wide ranging impact on the police role, organizational strategies, staffing, training and policy. State, local and tribal police are now at the forefront of Homeland Security activities, yet there remains a great deal of uncertainty about their mission. The ramp-up efforts by federal and state government are reminiscent of the staging for civil defense in the 1960's. As a result of 9/11, there has been an invigoration for cities and towns to …

Hide And Seek With The Birds And The Bees, Farheen Mukri

Social Space

Teenagers today are going behind their parents’ back to explore sexuality – an area perceived as taboo by a majority of Asian parents. While the society adopts a secular approach in its forum-like discussions over the Internet, television and newspapers, parents are continually surprised at the behaviour of their teenage children. Farheen Mukri explores the teenage sexuality situation in Singapore and identifies how social service agencies, schools and parents can collectively address the problem.

An Analysis Of Education Subsidy In The Presence Of Fertility Decisions, Human Capital Accumulation, And Spillovers, Woan Foong Wong Jan 2009

An Analysis Of Education Subsidy In The Presence Of Fertility Decisions, Human Capital Accumulation, And Spillovers, Woan Foong Wong

Honors Papers

The paper hypothesizes that the level of aggregate human capital in an economy affects the overall returns of an individual's human capital accumulation and fertility decision. However, the positive externalities from aggregate human capital are not internalized by households in their investment decisions. Using an overlapping-generations model, specify the household’s optimization problem in a rural developing country where parents have an old-age support motive that underlies the benefits of having and educating children. The optimal decision of parents is then contrasted with that of the social planner. They differ in that the social planner internalizes the externalities of aggregate human …

Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: A Laboratory Paradigm, D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Kara Carola Jan 2009

Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: A Laboratory Paradigm, D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Kara Carola

Title IX Research and Resources

The present study attempted to develop a laboratory analogue for the study of tolerance for sexual harassment by using an online speed-dating paradigm. In that context, the relation between participants’ sexual harassment attitudes, perpetrator attractiveness, perpetrator status, and perceived dating potential of the perpetrator were examined as factors influencing participants’ tolerance of sexually harassing behavior. Participants were 128 female college students from a small northeastern public university. Results indicated that attractiveness, high social status, and attitudinal beliefs about sexual harassment were all predictive of tolerance for sexual harassment, providing preliminary support for the validity of this paradigm. In addition, participants’ …

The Nature Of Contradictions In India: Using An Applied Ethnographic Technique To Further Intercultural Understanding, Melissa Lr Handa

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

India is often noted for the large body of contradictions that exist within it, which has left many observers in a state of bafflement, never really understanding why or how such huge inconsistencies can harmoniously exist. The intent of this thesis is to begin an exploration into India’s mass of contradictions.

The insights of Indian informants were incorporated into this study in an attempt to explain this dilemma. The respondents were interviewed in order to determine whether (1) they are aware that these contradictions exist and (2) whether they attempt to reconcile them and, if so, how. The fascinating interplay …

The Effect Of Multiple Perpetrators On Judgements Of Responsibility, Louise Hamer Jan 2009

The Effect Of Multiple Perpetrators On Judgements Of Responsibility, Louise Hamer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study questioned whether participants feel one person committing a crime alone is more, less, or equally responsible for his or her actions than two people committing a crime together; whether participants react differently to two equally culpable coconspirators than they do to a perpetrator who was coerced by a companion to commit the crime; and whether these factors affect the amount of responsibility attributed to the perpetrator or the length of sentence recommended. The study found that less responsibility was attributed to a coerced perpetrator; however, all perpetrators received sentences of similar lengths. Also, White respondents attributed more responsibility …
