The Effect Of Aging Populations On Inflation, Andrew Stone Jan 2009

The Effect Of Aging Populations On Inflation, Andrew Stone

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This research uses panel data of 66 high and middle income countries to examine the inflation effects of demographics. The primary objective of this research is to show that consumer prices change based on the amount of retired persons in a nation. The double log model used in this paper also includes interest rates and uses data from 1991-2007 in order to demonstrate the most recent demographic shifts. The results showing inflationary pressure coming from young retirees compliment the Modigliani life-cycle hypothesis that this age group consists of net consumers, while the deflationary pressures provided by the working aged population …

Effects Of Globalization On Income Inequality In High Income Countries, Craig Bradford Jan 2009

Effects Of Globalization On Income Inequality In High Income Countries, Craig Bradford

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper examines the relationship between technology, trade liberalization, and financial globalization in incomes inequality, focusing on high income countries. We find that technological progress has a smaller effect on income inequality in high income countries than in middle and low income countries. It is also found that increases in the percentage of workers in the services industry decreases Income Inequality by a significant amount. The GINI index is used to measure the level of income inequality, and the Chinn-Ito index is used to measure the level of openness to capital investment.

The Relationship Between Housing Prices And Macroeconomic Factors In Spain, Garrett Fitzgerald Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Housing Prices And Macroeconomic Factors In Spain, Garrett Fitzgerald

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper examines the effects of certain macroeconomic variables (i.e mortgages, inflation, and employment) on the price of houses in Spain. An error correction vector autoregressive (ECVAR) model is used to model the impact of the macroeconomic variables on real housing prices. Variance decompositions will be analyzed to determine the extent to which these variables have an effect on housing prices in Spain.

The Economic Benefits Of Education As A Return To Gdp Per Capita, Jonathan Brown Jan 2009

The Economic Benefits Of Education As A Return To Gdp Per Capita, Jonathan Brown

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper examines many different factors of education, including the levels of education received, the expenditures per student as well as for each level of education, and the measurement of unemployed with said levels of education as to how it affects the levels of GDP per capita. What is consistent across each regression is that in fact, the average years of education received by the population will most closely have a beneficial effect on the levels of GDP per capita. What these regressions also show are tendencies to look more towards the future rather than the past. When considering unemployment, …

Are Educated Women Less Likely To Get Married?, Qian Jiang Jan 2009

Are Educated Women Less Likely To Get Married?, Qian Jiang

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

In the past, there are some research indicate that highly educated women marry less. Because women tend to face the success penalty, however, a new analysis of U.S. census data indicates that--despite cultural messages to the contrary--the success gap, in which better educated women marry less, is actually shrinking. Using 2008 Current Population Survey, this paper utilized Probit regression to analyze how increase of women's educational attainment can influenced marriage and other aspects such as financial well-being. In addition, this study tries to estimate the best levels of education for women to be more likely to married.

The Effect Of Tax-Burdens On Foreign Direct Investment: A Cross-Sectional Look At Developing Economies, Kevin Hauver Jan 2009

The Effect Of Tax-Burdens On Foreign Direct Investment: A Cross-Sectional Look At Developing Economies, Kevin Hauver

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper investigates the effect that certain aspects of the tax burden have on foreign direct investment in developing economies. Using data from 35 select countries, the paper uses an OLS regression model to determine the impact that various taxes, both on individuals and corporations, can have on FDI. The paper concludes that corporate tax rates are not a statistically significant factor for determining FDI inflows into a host country, but that indirect tax rates are. This is likely due to the use of ‘enterprise zones’, which offer favorable indirect tax rates to companies that choose to operate in a …

The Impacts Of Energy Efficiency And Consumption On Gdp In The Euro Area, Justin T. Getts Jan 2009

The Impacts Of Energy Efficiency And Consumption On Gdp In The Euro Area, Justin T. Getts

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper analyzes the aggregate data of the Euro Area to determine how GDP per unit of energy is affected by the use of common energy sources. Time series data from 1980 to 2005 is used to show the change in how energy is used compared to the growth of GDP. It is revealed in this paper that the consumption of efficient forms of energy is highly correlated to GDP growth and the use of inefficient energy sources leads to less growth.

Terror Attacks: Understanding Social Risk Views Between Singaporean Lay And Security Practitioners, Yam Hong Loo, David J. Brooks Jan 2009

Terror Attacks: Understanding Social Risk Views Between Singaporean Lay And Security Practitioners, Yam Hong Loo, David J. Brooks

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

This study investigated the psychometric risk perception between lay people and security practitioners towards terrorist attack against Singaporean educational institutions. Being located in Southeast Asia, Singapore is not immune to terrorist attacks from rebels found in the region. To promote fear and chaos, terrorists have begun to attack private and neutral institutions in order to promote their cause. Mosques, hospitals and other such institutions are no longer immune from terrorist attacks. The psychometric risk paradigm offers a basis for examining empirical views towards potential terrorist attack against such institutions. Survey data in comparing terrorist attack against Singapore’s educational institutions with …

Societal Transformation And Reference Services In The Academic Library: Theoretical Foundations For Re-Envisioning Reference, Pamela N. Martin Jan 2009

Societal Transformation And Reference Services In The Academic Library: Theoretical Foundations For Re-Envisioning Reference, Pamela N. Martin

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

This paper draws on theories of societal transformation, specifically the information society and postmodernism, to pinpoint challenges and offer concrete advice for re-envisioning reference services in the academic library, including traditional reference work and formal library instruction. Rather than acting as experts to whom all patrons should defer, reference librarians should serve as helpful guides and fellow explorers of the information universe.

Inequality And Human Capital In Appalachia: 1960-2000, Dan Black, Seth Sanders Jan 2009

Inequality And Human Capital In Appalachia: 1960-2000, Dan Black, Seth Sanders

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper examines changes in the earnings distribution of men age 25-64 between 1960 and 2000 in Appalachia and in the remainder of the U.S. Because Appalachia is more rural than the remainder of the U.S. we also examine changes in the earnings distribution in rural vs. urban areas. Our central finding is that there have been large differences in the evolution of the earnings distribution in rural vs. urban areas and this is the principal reason that Appalachia’s earnings distribution differs to some degree from the remainder of the U.S. We find that the bottom of the earnings distribution …

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry Kronenfeld Jan 2009

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry Kronenfeld

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Estimation of tree density from point-tree distances is an attractive option for quick inventory of new sites, but estimators that are unbiased in clustered and dispersed situations have not been found. Noting that bias of an estimator derived from distances to the kth nearest neighbor from a random point tends to decrease with increasing k, a method is proposed for estimating the limit of an asymptotic function through a set of ordered distance estimators. A standard asymptotic model is derived from the limiting case of a clustered distribution. The proposed estimator is evaluated against 13 types of simulated generating processes, …

Gambling Awareness For Youth: An Analysis Of The "Don't Gamble Away Our Future" Program, Lisa M. Taylor

Faculty Research & Creative Activity until 2018 (FCS)

Gambling has become increasingly popular among minors and is easily accessible to them. This is alarming since research has indicated that minors are more susceptible to gambling pathology than adults. Additionally, gambling has devastating effects on minors that gamble as well as their families and communities. The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery (IIAR) developed a gambling awareness prevention program called “Don’t Gamble Away our Future™” to educate minors about gambling and the dangers associated with it. The IIAR started collecting data for the purpose of evaluation in 2005. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the program’s effectiveness …

The Influence Of Viewpoint And Object Detail In Blind People When Matching Pictures To Complex Objects, Morton A. Heller, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Stephanie Guthrie, Crystal Kranz, Patricia Klaus Jan 2009

The Influence Of Viewpoint And Object Detail In Blind People When Matching Pictures To Complex Objects, Morton A. Heller, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Stephanie Guthrie, Crystal Kranz, Patricia Klaus

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

We examined haptic viewpoint effects in blindfolded-sighted (BS) and visually impaired subjects: early blind (EB), late blind (LB), and very low vision (VLV). Participants felt complex objects and matched tangible pictures to them. In experiment 1, the EB and BS subjects had similar overall performance. Experiment 2 showed that the presence of a detail on the target object lowered performance in the BS subjects, and that matching accuracy was lower overall for top views for the blind subjects. In experiments 3 ^ 5, EB, LB, VLV, and BS subjects made judgments about perspective pictures of a model house with more …

Developing Consumer Subjectivity In Ireland: 1900-80, Paddy Dolan Jan 2009

Developing Consumer Subjectivity In Ireland: 1900-80, Paddy Dolan

Articles

The development of consumer subjectivity cannot be solely understood in terms of the intentions, strategies and discursive practices emanating from diverse power centres. Following Elias, and using Ireland as an empirical case, the consumer is presented as undergoing a shift along a continuum of We–I balances towards the latter pole. This occurs within the context of increasing social interdependencies, functional specialization and social integration. Through complex, unplanned social processes over time, the consumer is seen more individualistically. I conclude by suggesting that there are opportunities to synthesize figurational and Foucauldian approaches to consumer subjectivity once long-term social change is prioritized.

Introduction: Approaches To Qualitative Research, John Hogan, Paddy Dolan, Paul Donnelly Jan 2009

Introduction: Approaches To Qualitative Research, John Hogan, Paddy Dolan, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

Undertaking a dissertation can be a daunting prospect, irrespective of whether a student is an undergraduate or a postgraduate. The idea of having to start with a blank sheet of paper and finish with anything between 15,000 words for an undergraduate dissertation, and 100,000 words of a PhD dissertation, is an arresting thought. But, even these coarse figures fail to capture the true extent of the work involved, as a finished dissertation is usually only a distillation of volumes of work and words that far exceed the finished product ultimately presented. The various chapters present examples for dissertation students in …

Estimating The Effectiveness Of A Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax In Reducing Particulate Matter Emissions, Jordan Larsen, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2009

Estimating The Effectiveness Of A Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax In Reducing Particulate Matter Emissions, Jordan Larsen, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This study estimates the effectiveness of a vehicle miles travelled (VMT) tax in controlling mobile-source emissions of particulate matter (PM2.5) in a non-attainment area located in northern Utah. Using a recently updated household-level dataset, the study finds no evidence of an endogenous relationship between choice of vehicle type and VMT. VMT elasticities are also estimated with respect to cost per mile that are in some cases larger in magnitude than those reported in previous studies. Based on vehicle emissions tests performed by the Houston Advanced Research Center, the study estimates the reduction in particulate emissions that would occur with two …

The Shaping Of A Saint-President: Latent Clues From Nelson Mandela's Autobiography, Abdulrazaq Imam Jan 2009

The Shaping Of A Saint-President: Latent Clues From Nelson Mandela's Autobiography, Abdulrazaq Imam

Psychology

Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom provides evidence organized in the form of antecedent-behavior-consequence units, which suggest that a shaping process effected during his many years of incarceration best describes the origins of the outcome represented by the political order in South Africa following his release. The analysis shows that Mandela's radicalism at the start of his imprisonment on Robben Island changed into a saintly presidential aura in the end, through a systematic selection process that actively involved Mandela himself and his political aspirations. The saintly qualities ascribed to Mandela after his release by many around the world are consistent …
