Addams And Dewey: Pragmatism, Expression, And Community, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Chicago in the 1890s was home to two remarkable institutions, started by two remarkable activist-philosophers, experimenting with ideas and with social change. The first was Hull House, a social settlement, founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. The second was the Laboratory School, an experimental school opened in 1896 by John Dewey, along with teachers Katherine Camp Mayhew and Anna Camp Edwards. Interaction was constant between the residents of Hull House and the teachers of the Laboratory School, as the participants learned from and taught each other. Through Hull House and the Laboratory School, Addams and Dewey …

Occupational Health And Safety Status Of Indigenous And Latino Farmworkers In Oregon, Stephanie Farquhar, Nancy M. Goff, Nargess Shadbeh, Julie Samples, Santiago Ventura, Valentin Sanchez, Pamela Rao, Shelley Davis

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Exposure to pesticides poses great risk to agricultural workers and their families. Of the approximately 174,000 agricultural workers in Oregon, studies estimate that up to 40% of the workers in Oregon are indigenous and may be particularly vulnerable to the health risks of working in pesticide treated areas. Surveys conducted with Oregon farmworkers suggest that Latino and indigenous farmworkers differ demographically and may have diverse occupational and health needs. All Latino workers reported Spanish as their native language, while indigenous workers spoke several different native languages. Latino workers were employed mostly in orchards (28%) and nurseries (24%), while indigenous workers …

Lessons From Fdr, Robert A. Slayton Jan 2009

Lessons From Fdr, Robert A. Slayton

History Faculty Articles and Research

"President Barack Obama has made it clear that FDR is one of his key role models. The appeal is understandable. Both men assumed the presidency during a major economic crisis. Both men were also the first of their respective minorities to gain the White House. Thus, it might help to consider what Obama could learn from studying his predecessor's life: Roosevelt, in dealing with his disability, learned the importance of working with others and bringing them into his decision-making loop. He also learned to draw on personal strengths as well. For FDR, the private became political."

Is Personality Related To The Music I Like? A Study Of Music Preferences And Sensation Seeking, Anna Coker Rhodes, Randy Carden Jan 2009

Is Personality Related To The Music I Like? A Study Of Music Preferences And Sensation Seeking, Anna Coker Rhodes, Randy Carden

Modern Psychological Studies

Past research supports the idea that music preferences are significantly predicted by sensation seeking. The current study explored whether disinhibition, thrill and adventure seeking, and openness to experience predict preference for music genre? The data were analyzed using a multivariate linear regression approach. Participants were 103 (27 men, 76 women) undergraduate students at a small, private university in the southeast. The participants listened to fourteen genres of music for twenty seconds each and Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale was administered. The results supported previous research in that high sensation seekers preferred rock or heavy metal music and those lower on the …

Luciano Bianciardi’S Aprire Il Fuoco: On The Function Of Literature In Society, Stefano Giannini Jan 2009

Luciano Bianciardi’S Aprire Il Fuoco: On The Function Of Literature In Society, Stefano Giannini

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

This is the first article to assess the importance of Luciano Bianciardi’s last novel, Aprire il fuoco [Open Fire!](1969), a work often overlooked, that offers crucial insights into Bianciardi’s commitments to social causes. A so-called “irregular” of 20th-century Italian literary panorama, Luciano Bianciardi (1922-1971) in his Aprire il fuoco discusses his idea of literature as an activity that must aim at assuming the role of ethical guide in societies. In my article, I gloss the often obscure historical and literary references of the novel, and provide a critical assessment of its impact.

Reassessing Velocity Generation In Hammer Throwing, Andreas Maheras

Track and Field Faculty Publications

In the hammer throw, the exertion of the force necessary to increase the horizontal velocity of the implement is thought to take place mainly when both the thrower's feet are in contact with the ground during the double support phases of the turns. Coaches have therefore sought to maximize the duration and the effectiveness of the double-support phases while minimizing the length of the single-support phases, when it is ass1.1med that the thrower is preparing for the next double- support. However. as scientific Understanding of the event has developed things have become less clear. It is now known that the …

The Influence Of Emotional Stimuli On Cognitive Performance In Relation To Delusion Intensity In Schizophrenia, Diana Orem Jan 2009

The Influence Of Emotional Stimuli On Cognitive Performance In Relation To Delusion Intensity In Schizophrenia, Diana Orem

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has suggested that there are multiple psychological processes underlying delusional thought. While it appears that cognitive biases in certain reasoning and attention processes are related to delusion-proneness, the influence of emotion on these processes is not well understood. The overall objective of this study was to investigate the effect of emotional content on performance on tasks thought to measure attentional bias, preferential recall, and probabilistic reasoning in individuals with schizophrenia and demographically matched controls. In order to account for level of delusion-proneness, participants also completed a multidimensional measure of delusional thought. It was hypothesized that individuals with schizophrenia …

Los Immigrantes: In-Depth Reporting And Anonymous Source Analysis, Ashley Belcher

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This Capstone Experience/Thesis is an in-depth reporting project on Hispanic immigration in Bowling Green, Kentucky. With a journalistic approach, this project identifies key issues in the immigrant community, including issues concerning illegal immigrants. The purpose of this project is to identify and document the stories of these immigrants. Because some sources interviewed were illegal, anonymity was upheld throughout the project. This CE/T also analyzes the use of anonymous sources in journalism. Specifically, this project analyzes the balance of the field of journalism’s requirement to inform its public and the requirement to not harm any source.

Pilot Community-Based Intervention To Address The Needs Of Elderly Caregivers In The Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, Priscilla Reddy, Shegs James, H. Mutumba Bilay-Boon, Eka Esu-Williams, Hena Khan

HIV and AIDS

The HIV epidemic in South Africa has placed a substantial burden on elderly caregivers, mainly women, who are often tasked with caring for their grandchildren who are orphaned and rendered vulnerable by the death or illness of their parents. The Medical Research Council (MRC), Age-in-Action, and the Horizons Program conducted formative research, as described in this research summary, to assess the needs of elderly caregivers in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in 2005. The investigations revealed that elderly caregivers faced a number of challenges including difficulty communicating with youth, fears and a sense of hopelessness around matters regarding …

Distance Learning Librarians: Their Shared Vision, Anne M. Casey Jan 2009

Distance Learning Librarians: Their Shared Vision, Anne M. Casey

Staff Works - Hunt Library

Shared vision is a component of leadership that fosters innovation through buy-in at all levels of the organization. It is often evident in circumstances people see a need for innovation but do not have the power to make changes on their own. Many librarians in academic institutions that were early adopters of distance learning envisioned a need for new services that were tailored to off-campus students. This study examines shared vision among librarians through a content analysis of planning documents from early distance learning library programs. It offers a shared vision model relevant to the study and application of leadership.

Pavlovian Drug Discrimination With Bupropion As A Feature Positive Occasion Setter: Substitution By Methamphetamine And Nicotine, But Not Cocaine, Jamie L. Wilkinson, Chia Li, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2009

Pavlovian Drug Discrimination With Bupropion As A Feature Positive Occasion Setter: Substitution By Methamphetamine And Nicotine, But Not Cocaine, Jamie L. Wilkinson, Chia Li, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Bupropion can serve as a discriminative stimulus (SD) in an operant drug discrimination task, and a variety of stimulants substitute for the bupropion SD. There are no reports, however, of bupropion functioning as a Pavlovian occasion setter (i.e., feature positive modulator). The present experiment seeks to fill this gap in the literature by training bupropion in rats as a feature positive modulator that disambiguates when a light will be paired with sucrose. Specifically, on bupropion (10 mg/kg IP) sessions, offset of 15-sec cue lights were followed by brief delivery of liquid sucrose; saline sessions were similar …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Current smokers express the desire to quit. However, the majority find it difficult to remain abstinent. As such, research efforts continually seek to develop more effective treatment. One such area of research involves the interoceptive stimulus effects of nicotine as either a discriminative stimulus in an operant drug discrimination task, or more recently as a conditional stimulus (CS) in a discriminated goal-tracking task. The present work investigated the potential role nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the CS effects of nicotine (0.4 mg/kg) using antagonists with differential selectivity for β2*, α7*, α6β2*, and α3β4* receptors. Methyllycaconitine (MLA) had no effect on nicotine-evoked …

The Effect Of Online Chapter Quizzes On Exam Performance In An Undergraduate Social Psychology Course, Bethany C. Johnson, Marc T. Kiviniemi Jan 2009

The Effect Of Online Chapter Quizzes On Exam Performance In An Undergraduate Social Psychology Course, Bethany C. Johnson, Marc T. Kiviniemi

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Assigned textbook readings are a common requirement in undergraduate courses, but students often do not complete reading assignments or do not do so until immediately before an exam. This may have detrimental effects on learning and course performance. Regularly scheduled quizzes on reading material may increase completion of reading assignments and therefore course performance. This study examined the effectiveness of compulsory, mastery-based, weekly reading quizzes as a means of improving exam and course performance. Completion of reading quizzes was related to both better exam and course performance. The discussion includes recommendations for the use of quizzes in undergraduate courses.
