"I Feel Fat" : How Do Therapists Help Recovering Female Anorectic Clients Overcome Body Image Issues?, Holly G. Light
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to explore how therapists help their adult, female anorectic clients (who are post-medical stabilization and have committed to some therapeutic level of treatment and recovery) overcome body image issues related to the pursuit of thinness prescribed by Western culture and the media. Through interviews with ten therapists who had extensive experience working with anorectic women in recovery, this exploratory study examined clinicians' experiences with clients' body image issues and chief complaints, their strategies for treating the body image disturbance in their clients, their perceptions of what factors help someone to fully recover and what the most …
Engaging The Hard To Engage : An Examination Of Sanctioned Tanf Clients' Perceptions Of The Re-Engagement Process : A Project Done In Collaboration With The Contra Costa County Employment And Human Services Department., Sena M. Perrier-Morris
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This mixed methods study examined the experiences and perceptions of welfare recipients who were referred to Contra Costa County's sanctioned client outreach program. Contra Costa County assigned social workers ("Client Engagement Specialists") to provide intensive outreach to this client population that was often regarded as difficult to engage in required employment activities and services. The objective was to better understand how welfare recipients viewed the attempt to re-engage them and what county-offered services they regarded as most helpful to them and their families. The study consisted of a sample of 19 respondents drawn from a larger sample pool of 149 …

Sugar And Spice : The Hidden World Of Pre-Adolescent Female Aggression, Sarah Crofton Winsor
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis proposes that relational theory offers an appropriate and effective framework for both prevention and intervention in situations of covert bullying behavior among pre-adolescent females. After a review of recent literature about the phenomenon of pre-adolescent female bullying, the thesis describes the relational theory advocated by feminist psychology professionals in the last thirty years as an alternative understanding of female social and emotional development that contrasts with the previously dominant male-based paradigm. Following the suggestions of relational theorists, the thesis proposes a new understanding of the specific covert bullying behaviors of young girls that is based on insights into …
Do The Pikler And Rie Methods Promote Infant-Parent Attachment?, Mary Triulzi
Do The Pikler And Rie Methods Promote Infant-Parent Attachment?, Mary Triulzi
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis explores Pikler and Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) methods of parenting enhancement and intervention in an attempt to discover whether they promote attachment in the first three years of a child's life. I report on the Pikler and RIE literature, as well as past and current attachment theory and research. I begin with the work of Bowlby, Ainsworth, and Main and progress to the study of neurobiological, genealogy, adult attachment styles, coping and resiliency, and internal mental states. In the 1946, post-WWII, Emmi Pikler created an orphanage in Budapest, Hungary, The Pikler Institute, beginning a unique approach to …

On Sport and Society
To say that sport is a central institution in American life would be a gross understatement. The obsessive hold that sport has on Americans is obvious to anyone who spends more than five minutes examining the culture. As we approach the mid-winter festival of the Super Bowl such an obsession seems self-evident.

1. Rebecca MacKinnon yesterday posted a marvelous wrap-up of Charter 08, with many links included. We usually use a rather light touch with these recommendations, but this time…head on over. If you read one thing on China today, it should be this.
2. To follow up, there are a few related readings that are worth a jump, early writings by some of the figures MacKinnon mentions in her piece: “That Holy Word, ‘Revolution’” by Liu Xiaobo, and “Thirsty Dragon at the Olympics” by Dai Qing. For another take on Charter 08, check out the piece we ran at China Beat …

Legendary sinologist, linguist and educator John DeFrancis passed away on January 2, 2009 at the age of 97.
For any student of the Chinese language and writing system working in the latter part of the twentieth century, DeFrancis was simply a titan. Prior to his arrival on the scene, major China scholars researching the Chinese script, such as Bernard Karlgren, Arthur Waley and Herbert Giles, tended to communicate mainly with other experts, while the popular press, under the spell of figures such as Ezra Pound and Ernest Fenollosa, reinforced notions of the Chinese script as exotic, ineffable, mystical or even …

The Anchor: 2009
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

There are many people just now wondering what Barack Obama’s China policy will look like, and many eager to advise him. For instance, the National Bureau of Asian Research’s journal, Asia Policy, has published a lengthy roundtable that does just that. I was curious too—what would a learned group of distinguished China watchers, including academics, journalists, and public intellectuals, propose as the new President’s information sources? Here was the note I sent out:
The United States has a new President who seems intellectually curious, will definitely have to deal with many issues relating to China, and is likely to take …

The observable traits of wild populations are continually shaped and reshaped by the environment and numerous agents of natural selection, including predators. In stark contrast with most predators, humans now typically exploit high proportions of prey populations and target large, reproductive-aged adults. Consequently, organisms subject to consistent and strong ‘harvest selection’ by fishers, hunters, and plant harvesters may be expected to show particularly rapid and dramatic changes in phenotype. However, a comparison of the rate at which phenotypic changes in exploited taxa occurs relative to other systems has never been undertaken. Here, we show that average phenotypic changes in 40 …

On 20 January 2009 while de-miner [the Victim] was working in his clearance lane excavating a detected signal, his bayonet stroked the top of a PMN mine and caused it to explode. According to the investigation report the de-miner has not maintained and considered the default clearance depth during the excavation and used his bayonet carelessly, therefore, caused the accident. Unfortunately the victim was not fully dressed with PPE and his visor was up during the accident. Thus he has got several injuries on his face, legs and different parts of his body.
