Montana Poll: Resident Attitudes Toward Tourism, 1992-2008 , Norma P. Nickerson

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

In each of the past three strategic plans for Montana’s Travel and Tourism Industry, one goal has been to understand and then facilitate improved attitudes toward tourism in the state. Specifically, Montana's 2008-2012 Strategic Plan for Tourism and Recreation, Objective 10.5.c. says: “Continue regular monitoring of Montanans’ opinions about tourism and recreation.” This objective has a high priority designation. The Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research (ITRR) has contributed to the understanding of resident attitudes by polling Montana residents about their attitudes and opinions regarding tourism since 1991.

Factors Affecting Behavioral Changes In Response To Road Fees: Some Analyses Of The Effect Of Attitudes, Transit Access, And Fuel Efficiency On Changes In Miles Driven, Anthony M. Rufolo Feb 2009

Factors Affecting Behavioral Changes In Response To Road Fees: Some Analyses Of The Effect Of Attitudes, Transit Access, And Fuel Efficiency On Changes In Miles Driven, Anthony M. Rufolo

TREC Final Reports

Objective The Oregon Department of Transportation conducted a test of an innovative technology to replace fuel taxes with mileage fees. In the test, some vehicles were charged a flat fee per mile and others were charged differential fees that were higher for travel in the Portland metropolitan area during weekday peak hours and lower for other travel. I was charged with developing the database for the project and analyzing the behavioral responses of the participants. The database is quite extensive, including responses to three surveys as well as information on mileage in various categories. The experiment ended on April 1, …

Evaluation Of The Oregon Dmv Medically At-Risk Driver Program, James G. Strathman, Hongwei Dong, Lois M. Bronfman Feb 2009

Evaluation Of The Oregon Dmv Medically At-Risk Driver Program, James G. Strathman, Hongwei Dong, Lois M. Bronfman

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Oregon is one of six states with requirements for mandatory reporting of drivers with medical impairments. In 2003, the state’s mandatory reporting program, administered by Oregon Driver Motor Vehicles (DMV) Services, was revised to cover an extensive range of cognitive and functional impairments. This report examines the safety risk of persons treated in Oregon’s revised Medically At-Risk Driver program. The incidence of crashes and traffic offense convictions before and after license suspension is documented and compared to crash and conviction incidence of persons treated in the DMV’s voluntary medical reporting program. Comparisons are also made to a representative sample of …

Students Who Are Moms: How Do They Do It?, Rhianna Marie Derscheid Feb 2009

Students Who Are Moms: How Do They Do It?, Rhianna Marie Derscheid

Dissertations and Theses

Women with children are the fastest growing population of students within higher education. Women with children attempt to obtain a college degree for varied reasons, including self-development, social mobility, and to be a good role model for their children. Student moms face several obstacles in their attempts to obtain a college degree including financial constraints, childcare issues, marginalization, time constraints, and isolation. There is a paucity of research on student moms and the factors that contribute to their successful completion of a college degree. More research is needed to understand student moms’ experiences and to develop effective support programs within …

What Proportion Of Children Stay In The Same Location As Adults, And How Does This Vary Across Location And Groups?, Timothy J. Bartik Feb 2009

What Proportion Of Children Stay In The Same Location As Adults, And How Does This Vary Across Location And Groups?, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper provides new information on what proportion of individuals spend their adult work lives in their childhood metropolitan area or state. I also examine how this proportion varies across different demographic groups, and with the size and growth rate of the metropolitan area. I find that the proportion of individuals who spend most of their adulthood in their childhood metropolitan area is surprisingly high. Furthermore, this proportion does not go down as much as one might think for smaller or slower-growing metropolitan areas, or for college-educated persons. These findings imply that state and local investments in children may pay …

Analyzing And Forecasting Business Cycles In A Small Open Economy: A Dynamic Factor Model For Singapore, Hwee Kwan Chow, Keen Meng Choy Feb 2009

Analyzing And Forecasting Business Cycles In A Small Open Economy: A Dynamic Factor Model For Singapore, Hwee Kwan Chow, Keen Meng Choy

Research Collection School Of Economics

A dynamic factor model is applied to a large panel dataset of Singapore’s macroeconomic variables and global economic indicators with the initial objective of analyzing business cycles in a small open economy. The empirical results suggest that four common factors are present in the quarterly time series, which can broadly be interpreted as world, regional, electronics and domestic economic cycles. The estimated factor model explains well the observed fluctuations in real economic activity and price inflation, leading us to use it in forecasting Singapore’s business cycles. We find that the forecasts generated by the factors are generally more accurate than …

The Impact Of Authentic Leadership And Ethical Organizational Culture On Auditor Behavior, Janice Taylor Morris Phd Feb 2009

The Impact Of Authentic Leadership And Ethical Organizational Culture On Auditor Behavior, Janice Taylor Morris Phd

Dissertations

Recently, unprofessional behavior resulted in several high-profile financial scandals and business failures. Many blamed external auditors of these companies' financial statements for failing to detect and/or report errors and fraud that led to the failures. Leaders within major audit firms have been urged to foster more ethical firm environments as a means of inhibiting dysfunctional auditor behavior (DAB) such as premature sign-off, gathering insufficient audit evidence, and the underreporting of time spent conducting an audit. This advice is based on two assumptions: (1) auditor behavior is one element of audit quality and (2) the behavior of employees is influenced by …

Alcohol Use Among Rural Middle School Students: Adolescents, Parents, Teachers, And Community Leaders' Perceptions, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac Feb 2009

Alcohol Use Among Rural Middle School Students: Adolescents, Parents, Teachers, And Community Leaders' Perceptions, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

BACKGROUND: Although rural adolescents use of alcohol is at some of the highest rates nationally, rural adolescent alcohol use has not been studied extensively. This study examines how community attitudes and behaviors are related to adolescent drinking in rural environments. METHODS: Data were gathered in 22 rural communities in the Upper Midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming). Surveys were collected from 1424 rural sixth- to eighth-grade adolescents and 790 adults, including parents, teachers, and community leaders. Census data were also collected. RESULTS: Drinkers differed from nondrinkers by the following factors: higher perceptions of peer, parental, and overall community …

The Dark Triad: Facilitating A Short-Term Mating Strategy In Men, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, Gregory D. Webster, David P. Schmitt Feb 2009

The Dark Triad: Facilitating A Short-Term Mating Strategy In Men, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, Gregory D. Webster, David P. Schmitt

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This survey (N=224) found that characteristics collectively known as the Dark Triad (i.e. narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism) were correlated with various dimensions of short-term mating but not long-term mating. The link between the Dark Triad and short-term mating was stronger for men than for women. The Dark Triad partially mediated the sex difference in short-term mating behaviour. Findings are consistent with a view that the Dark Triad facilitates an exploitative, short-term mating strategy in men. Possible implications, including that Dark Triad traits represent a bundle of individual differences that promote a reproductively adaptive strategy are discussed. Findings are discussed in …

A Town Hall Meeting On Our Bicycle Safety Crisis, Mineta Transportation Institute Feb 2009

A Town Hall Meeting On Our Bicycle Safety Crisis, Mineta Transportation Institute

Mineta Transportation Institute

There is no doubt that due to rising fuel costs, more people have turned to their bicycles as an economical and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation. The increased bicycle traffic on our roads and streets has brought an unfortunate rise in accidents between cyclists and motor vehicles. One of the most effective ways to address this problem is to increase awareness in motorists and cyclists. With that awareness comes action and possible solutions. One of the best ways to increase awareness is to create an open forum in the “town hall” format. This forum, “A Town Hall Meeting on Our Bicycle …

The Talent Of Shu: Qiao Ami And The Intellectual World Of Early Medieval Sichuan, Alan Kam Leung Chan Feb 2009

The Talent Of Shu: Qiao Ami And The Intellectual World Of Early Medieval Sichuan, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Portrayals of the intellectual scene of the early medieval Chinese “Sanguo” or “Three States” period (220–280) generally privilege major figures associated with the state of Wei, such as He Yan and Wang Bi, over those who made their mark in Shu (modern Sichuan) and Wu, the other two states contending for the right to rule “all under Heaven” after the demise of the Han dynasty. Michael Farmer sets out to redress this imbalance through a study of the Shu statesman and historian Qiao Zhou (c. 200–270). The book thus harbors a dual purpose, reflected in its title, for in presenting …

Gender Specific Disruptions In Emotion Processing In Younger Adults With Depression, Sara L. Wright, Scott Aaron Langenecker, Patricia J. Deldin, Lisa J. Rapport, Kristy A. Nielson, Allison M. Kade, Lawrence S. Own, Huda Akil, Elizabeth A. Young, Jon-Kar Zubieta Feb 2009

Gender Specific Disruptions In Emotion Processing In Younger Adults With Depression, Sara L. Wright, Scott Aaron Langenecker, Patricia J. Deldin, Lisa J. Rapport, Kristy A. Nielson, Allison M. Kade, Lawrence S. Own, Huda Akil, Elizabeth A. Young, Jon-Kar Zubieta

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Background: One of the principal theories regarding the biological basis of major depressive disorder (MDD) implicates a dysregulation of emotion-processing circuitry. Gender differences in how emotions are processed and relative experience with emotion processing might help to explain some of the disparities in the prevalence of MDD between women and men. This study sought to explore how gender and depression status relate to emotion processing. Methods: This study employed a 2 (MDD status) × 2 (gender) factorial design to explore differences in classifications of posed facial emotional expressions (N=151). Results: For errors, there was an …

Semantic Knowledge For Famous Names In Mild Cognitive Impairment, Michael Seidenberg, Leslie Guidotti, Kristy A. Nielson, John L. Woodard, Sally Durgerian, Qi Zhang, Amelia Gander, Piero Antuono, Stephen M. Rao Feb 2009

Semantic Knowledge For Famous Names In Mild Cognitive Impairment, Michael Seidenberg, Leslie Guidotti, Kristy A. Nielson, John L. Woodard, Sally Durgerian, Qi Zhang, Amelia Gander, Piero Antuono, Stephen M. Rao

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Person identification represents a unique category of semantic knowledge that is commonly impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but has received relatively little investigation in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The current study examined the retrieval of semantic knowledge for famous names from three time epochs (recent, remote, and enduring) in two participant groups: 23 amnestic MCI (aMCI) patients and 23 healthy elderly controls. The aMCI group was less accurate and produced less semantic knowledge than controls for famous names. Names from the enduring period were recognized faster than both recent and remote names in both groups, and remote names …

Marketing Research As A Tool For Finding Library Users' Needs And Demands: Application Of Three Party Theory, Farzana Shafique

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries are under pressure to justify their existence and funding through customer- or market-oriented services. This requires a shift from product or service orientation to customer or need orientation. This paper explores users' needs and their opinion about an LIS departmental library, using the “Three Party Theory” of LIS marketing. Students, library service provider, and administrators were included in data collection. Suggestions for new library services are included, based on the results of the survey, focus groups, and interviews.

Multiple Independent Genetic Factors At Nos1ap Modulate The Qt Interval In A Multi-Ethnic Population, Dan E. Arking, Amit Khera, Chao Xing, W H Linda Kao, Wendy Post, Eric Boerwinkle, Aravinda Chakravarti Jan 2009

Multiple Independent Genetic Factors At Nos1ap Modulate The Qt Interval In A Multi-Ethnic Population, Dan E. Arking, Amit Khera, Chao Xing, W H Linda Kao, Wendy Post, Eric Boerwinkle, Aravinda Chakravarti

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Extremes of electrocardiographic QT interval are associated with increased risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD); thus, identification and characterization of genetic variants that modulate QT interval may elucidate the underlying etiology of SCD. Previous studies have revealed an association between a common genetic variant in NOS1AP and QT interval in populations of European ancestry, but this finding has not been extended to other ethnic populations. We sought to characterize the effects of NOS1AP genetic variants on QT interval in the multi-ethnic population-based Dallas Heart Study (DHS, n = 3,072). The SNP most strongly associated with QT interval in previous samples …

A Bible For Beijing, Pierre Fuller Jan 2009

A Bible For Beijing, Pierre Fuller

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A few weeks ago my mother learned at her Greenwich, Conn., church that, beyond church grounds, Bibles cannot be purchased in the People’s Republic. Her informant was a man from the Bible Society of Singapore who gave an evening talk on the state of Christianity in China at my parents’ mainstream Protestant parish. My mother soon asked her son in Beijing, me, about this fact over the phone and I couldn’t say either way: a Chinese-language Bible was not something I’d been actively looking for yet I could have sworn I’d spotted one in a shop a while back when …
