Can Liquidity Shifts Explain The Lockup Expiration Effect In Stock Returns?, Chandrasekhar Krishnamurti, Avanidhar Subrahmanyam, Tiong Yang Thong
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Several studies on the expiration of IPO lockups document a strong negative reaction even though the unlock event is devoid of any informational content. The empirical finding has remained a conundrum. In this paper, we find that changes in liquidity can account for the observed stock price reaction around lockup expiration. Specifically, firms which show improvement in liquidity subsequent to the unlock day experience positive abnormal returns in the post-expiration period, and vice versa. Another interesting conclusion that emerges from our research is that liquidity changes can predict future abnormal returns. Our results remain robust to the use of alternate …
Evaluating Oral, Non-Combustible Potential Reduced Exposure Products Marketed To Smokers, Caroline Cobb
Evaluating Oral, Non-Combustible Potential Reduced Exposure Products Marketed To Smokers, Caroline Cobb
Theses and Dissertations
Potential reduced exposure products (PREPs) are marketed to reduce smoking’s harm, despite little information concerning their effects. This study adapts previously reported clinical laboratory methods used to evaluate combustible PREPs to investigate the acute effects of four non-combustible PREPs (Ariva, Camel Snus, Marlboro Snus, Commit nicotine lozenge) relative to own brand cigarettes, sham smoking, and one combustible PREP that delivers no measurable nicotine (Quest). Twenty-eight smokers participated in 7 Latin-squared ordered, 2.5-hr sessions in which each product was administered twice (60-minute inter-administration interval). Sessions differed by product and were separated by > 48 hours. Plasma nicotine, heart rate, expired air carbon …

Recommendations For Obama: V
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
We asked China watchers from a variety of backgrounds to answer the question “What should Obama be reading about China?” While we’ve already run four installments (I, II, III, and IV), new suggestions continue to arrive. For a few of the cinematic variety, read on… Jan Berris is Vice-President of the National Committee on United States-China Relations and has worked with the committee since 1971.
I suggest that President Obama recover from the lousy week he just had by chilling out in his private movie theater and watching the following movies. None will give him a complete, or even, necessarily, …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
In December, the Chinese Communist Party celebrated the 30 years anniversary of reforming and opening up policy that became possible in the now almost legendary 3rd plenum of the 11th Central Committee where Deng Xiaoping defeated his “Whateverist” (read Maoist) rivals in the Party leadership. This coming March, however, we will celebrate another thirty-year anniversary of one of the key policies in reforms. It was then, on March 30, 1979, that Deng Xiaoping announced that the Party would continue to uphold the “four cardinal principles” of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong thought, proletarian dictatorship, party leadership, and socialism. This laid the …

Religious Freedom: Virginia Doesn't Need A New Statute, Ellis M. West
Political Science Faculty Publications
One would think that Virginians would be united and steadfast in their devotion to the Statute for Religious Freedom, written by Thomas Jefferson, adopted by the General Assembly in 1786, and since then praised by liberty-loving persons throughout the world. Currently, however, a group spearheaded by a few professors at Christopher Newport University and by the editor of the Religious Herald, the newspaper of the largest association of Baptists in Virginia, wants to "update" Jefferson's statute so that it guarantees religious people a "right to participate in the public forum, and express their points of view." On Jan. 24, …

From Global Financial Meltdown To Global Economic Crisis, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
Global financial meltdown that started in August 2007 had its origin in the United States. A combination of easy monetary policy, rapid economic growth, rising asset prices, low interest rates and financial innovation created conditions whereby the American dream of a home for everyone became almost a reality. As the creditworthy and deserving borrowers had saturated the mortgage market the lenders took excessive risks by moving down the curve to provide subprime mortgages to otherwise suspect borrowers. The banks themselves originated the loans but did not keep them on their balance sheets as they bundled them and sold them to …

Starbucks In China: A Top Five List
Starbucks In China: A Top Five List
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Starbucks has been a glowing beacon of capitalism-on-Chinese-soil (some might say…) for years now, and many took glee in the opening of a Starbucks outlet at the Forbidden City as quiet proof of communism’s impending demise (though the outlet is now closed). Here, a top five list of articles that together tell the story of Starbucks’ development in China from international interloper to home-grown coffeehouse. Read on for more.
1. China is major potential market for Starbucks: “Starbucks Soars in China” (Asia Times Online, June 15, 2006):
In Starbucks’ headquarters in Seattle, a group of company executives meet regularly, but …
